to think there is no place for raw onions in sandwiches

I've just picked up some lunch from a popular sandwich venue and, as usual, have had to pull out the best part of a raw red onion before eating it. AIBU to think that there is no sensible justification for having raw onions in sarnies? Surely the vast majority of people who buy lunch in these places are office workers who don't want to spend the rest of the day breathing onion stink all over their colleagues? (And yes, I know I could bring lunch from home instead of wasting my money blah di blah but I can't be arsed really don't have time to make lunch every day.)

WilsonFrickett Thu 22-Aug-13 13:22:03

There's no place for raw onion anywhere imo. Pet hate is when diced red onion comes scattered all over a salad, bleugh!

Pootles2010 Thu 22-Aug-13 13:22:40

Yak! The place for raw onions is a frying pan.

DangoDays Thu 22-Aug-13 13:22:44

Ooooo raw onion sliced finely with mature cheddar. Love it. Oh so stinky, oh so good.

halcyondays Thu 22-Aug-13 13:23:05

I like onion in sandwiches, red onion is milder than other onions. cant you just ask for no onions?

Lottapianos Thu 22-Aug-13 13:23:21

YANBU. Gross. If you're using raw onions, you need to soak them in lime juice for at least 10 minutes first - that takes the nasty sting out of them and stop you stinking after you've eaten them.

Sirzy Thu 22-Aug-13 13:24:03

Red onion in a tuna butty is lovely!

Safyre Thu 22-Aug-13 13:24:30

YANBU. There is no place for raw onions anywhere.

StuntGirl Thu 22-Aug-13 13:25:39

Onions don't belong anywhere imo. Vile things.

gaggiagirl Thu 22-Aug-13 13:27:02

YABU I love a bit of raw onion in a sandwich or salad. I eat lots of come here a gimme a big onion snog!

Sanctimummy Thu 22-Aug-13 13:27:22

Raw red onion in tuna sarnie- fab
Raw red onion on beef sarnie- fab

If you don't like it.... get a sarnie without onion...

lagertops Thu 22-Aug-13 13:28:09

I buy bags of chopped onions from Asda that you buy to put in soups and eat them straight out of the bag.

ViviPru Thu 22-Aug-13 13:29:08

Traditionally, onions available in Britain were sharp and unpleasant, so I think that's why many people can't abide them. I've been brought up (in the UK) on raw onions in everything as it was very much the norm for my South Austrian mother who was accustomed to the sweet north Italian onions her mother would use.

Sweet raw onions in sandwiches is HEAVEN!

VenusRising Thu 22-Aug-13 13:31:17

Onions are delicious in a salad and a sandwich, UABVU! smile

I have a friend who eats onions like apples, and I agree that's going a little bit ott.

Vickibee Thu 22-Aug-13 13:31:20

Love red onion too, Cheese & Onion sarnies are yummy!

Mmm cheese & onion sandwiches grin yabu

Crowler Thu 22-Aug-13 13:32:16

I LOVE red onion on a sandwich!

This is why you keep a toothbrush at work.

BitOutOfPractice Thu 22-Aug-13 13:32:32

YABTU Sandwiches are a PERFECT pace for raw onions.

QOD Thu 22-Aug-13 13:33:48

I have a bag of red onions on the go always! Raw red onion in sandwiches, on toast with cheese, on salad, on anything YUM!!!

SelectAUserName Thu 22-Aug-13 13:34:07

YANBU. Our staff canteen does the same - great honking chunks of raw onion mixed in with just about everything. Same with salad garnishes in restaurants. Even red onion leaves you with onion breath and as I spend lots of my time in small meeting rooms I don't want to breathe it over my poor colleagues.

ShakeAndVac Thu 22-Aug-13 13:34:59

Ooh, I love a bit of raw onion in a nice ham salad sarnie or whatever. The trick is to ask for 'just a few onions' so they know not to try putting what seems like a whole onion in there grin
Just say no to the onions if you don't want them or pull them out if they're already in!

MiaowTheCat Thu 22-Aug-13 13:35:22

YABU - I LOVE raw onion!

nightowlmostly Thu 22-Aug-13 13:41:21

YABU, there's nothing quite as nice as a cheese and onion toastie, yum!

mycatlikestwiglets Thu 22-Aug-13 13:41:32

I'm talking about Pret and the like here where you can't choose a no-onions option - it's such a pain having to pull them all out and there's always an oniony aftertaste. The toothbrush thing doesn't work ime - something about raw onions seems to keep the taste and smell returning throughout the day.

You stinky onion-lovers are mad I tell you.

Scholes34 Thu 22-Aug-13 13:50:25

YABU - but the addition of the onion should be subtle. You can't beat a cheese and (subtle) onion sandwich.

SirChenjin Thu 22-Aug-13 13:51:52

Horrible and unnecessary - I spend the whole time picking them out of sandwiches or avoiding the breath of someone who's eaten them <boak>

signet Thu 22-Aug-13 13:52:17

Mmmmmm corned beef and onion sandwiches. Yummy!

bellablot Thu 22-Aug-13 13:56:34

YABVU. Delicious!

BlingBang Thu 22-Aug-13 14:05:00

YAB ridiculously U. Raw onions are da bomb - in everything!

Ugh, I go through life picking raw onion out of things - when did it become expected that Every Bluddy Thing gets garnished with red onion?

I'm always having to remember when ordering sandwiches or burgers to request No Raw Onion! But it still appears where it has no business being (in a Caesar Salad, frinstance, in sandwiches at a bring-along supper, or sprinkled on a bowl of soup)

IloveJudgeJudy Thu 22-Aug-13 14:14:34

YAsoNBU. I hate raw onions. I love them cooked. I hate raw onions. I love them cooked. I hate raw onions. I love them cooked. I hate raw onions. I love them cooked.

Can you tell what my problem with raw onions is? They repeat on me smile. Love them cooked in a hamburger, sauce, curry, etc, but bleurgh, raw.

Aw damn, I've just taken some toasties out of the Breville, wish I'd put onions in them now sad

HoneyDragon Thu 22-Aug-13 14:18:41

I love raw onions. But I don't think UABU in your complaint. Raw onions hate my MiL. Yet they smuggle the fuckers in everything.

Once she ordered a prawn cocktail, and it was riddled with the fuckers. The waiter plonked it down with a flourish and her face was heartbreaking. She was crestfallen. sad

Raw onion is pure foulness. Vom.

HoneyDragon Thu 22-Aug-13 14:19:04

July grin

HoneyDragon Thu 22-Aug-13 14:19:31

hmm autocorrect

YABU, as I love raw onion, especially in a cheese sandwich, or thinly sliced with fresh crab, but YANBU as it's difficult to get the onion stench out of my breath for days.

<Sits on fence, munching a spring onion, dipped in salt>

The onion's dipped in salt, not me - that would be weird.

ohN0Whatnext Thu 22-Aug-13 14:26:53

I love raw onions, raw garlic and raw capsicum peppers all together whether in a sandwich or a salad. You sound like a wimp grin not liking these fine foods.

BrokenSunglasses Thu 22-Aug-13 14:29:37

I have been complaining about the same thing for years.

The only saving grace with Pret food is that they leave the onions quite big, so they are easy to pick out.

Spikeytree Thu 22-Aug-13 14:32:17

Oh dear, just read this after enjoying a cheese and onion sandwich for lunch. I only do this if I have access to my toothbrush and toothpaste though.

When I was training to be a teacher my mentor told me a good way to stop children trailing you around the classroom was to eat onions and drink coffee just before lesson time...

Snazzyenjoyingsummer Thu 22-Aug-13 14:33:15

YANBU. I sometimes like raw onion in a salad but it's definitely an occasional choice not an everyday thing. And I don't want it on my workday sandwich. It has to be a cost thing, surely? It's cheaper than posh salad and they want something to ring the changes from bog standard Iceberg lettuce.

FatherHankTree mmm, spring onion dipped in salt sounds lovely, actually!

HoneyDragon raw onion in a prawn cocktail? That's just mean. And so very wrong.

HoneyDragon Thu 22-Aug-13 14:35:00

Yup, actually in the Rose marie sauce, stealth onioning is cruel.

Snazzyenjoyingsummer it's heavenly, especially with a large hunk of cheddar.

CocacolaMum Thu 22-Aug-13 15:04:41

YABVU raw onion in sarnies is the way forward

MummyPig24 Thu 22-Aug-13 15:06:01

Yanbu raw onions are vile. It took me a long time to accept cooked onions.

Sleepathon Thu 22-Aug-13 15:07:22

Love raw onions in anything!

openerofjars Thu 22-Aug-13 15:07:50

There is no place for raw onions in a civilised society. That is all.

mycatlikestwiglets Thu 22-Aug-13 16:02:35

Lol at stealth onioning. The very worst kind of raw onion torture.

FixItUpChappie Thu 22-Aug-13 16:05:16

Aw, well I like a wee bit of raw red onion on my sandwich but you'd best have some gum on hand no doubt.

Shutupanddrive Thu 22-Aug-13 16:22:00

YABU, I love raw onions on my sandwiches. Especially red onions with egg mayo - luckily I don't work in an office/that sort of environment

Yabu. I absolutely love raw onion in sandwiches or anything!

MildDrPepperAddiction Thu 22-Aug-13 16:24:17

YABVVVU! I love onion!

gintastic Thu 22-Aug-13 16:24:37

I love raw onions, but I do stay away from them at work - not fair to my colleagues IMO. But our sandwich man does chicken curry with onion bhaji and mango chutney in a baguette. Bad bad bad bad but oh so good.....

Raw red onions...there is nothing better.

My fav sandwich ever is tuna mayo with pickle and raw onion....seriously handsome smile

dontsqueezetheteabag Thu 22-Aug-13 16:25:48

YANBU - horrible! They give me a headache and they make your breath STINK

ThursdayLast Thu 22-Aug-13 16:29:50

YES. Stealth onioning is beyond the pale. Ruins my life as I'm v anti onion, especially raw red onion.

It's just not on.

GrimmaTheNome Thu 22-Aug-13 16:36:20

YANBU. Raw onion is antisocial - worse than raw garlic. Its fine to have it in the privacy of your own home if you're not going to be seeing anyone for a day or so but otherwise, horrible.

Raw onion should not be hidden in sandwiches, nor added to salads by default.

Cooked onions, or pickled are fine. Onion marmalade in a sandwich is lovely.

Alisvolatpropiis Thu 22-Aug-13 16:37:28

That and the mayonnaise in every shop bought sandwich ever is why I don't buy them.

Beastofburden Thu 22-Aug-13 16:41:46

Impressed by those thoughtful souls who brush their fangs after raw onions. That is nice, I thank you smile I had a colleague who ate a lot of garlic and she always smelt horrible. I often used to wonder if she didn't know, or didn't care. She was quite difficult in other ways, so not someone you could raise it with, however carefully.

strokey Thu 22-Aug-13 16:47:08

I like raw red onion too. But probably not for lunch in an office.

How can grown-ups not like onion full stop? How weirdly immature! They cant always be tasted you know, when cooked in a stew they just add a background flavour

mycatlikestwiglets Thu 22-Aug-13 16:49:35

Yes to the over-mayonnaising too. And don't even get me started on the unnecessary use of dijon mustard.

GrimmaTheNome Thu 22-Aug-13 16:49:47

>How can grown-ups not like onion full stop?

My father always avoided onions, even cooked. He would say, 'I like onions but they don't like me'. They really do have a bad effect on some people. In which case, mature and considerate to avoid them!

GrimmaTheNome Thu 22-Aug-13 16:50:29

>That and the mayonnaise in every shop bought sandwich ever

not all - some of the M&S ones are marked as 'no mayo'

Sirzy Thu 22-Aug-13 16:51:31

I don't like tomatos but I have to accept that when I buy a butty with salad on then it will have it on. Its the problem with pre packed sandwiches.

SPBisResisting Thu 22-Aug-13 16:52:05

I love onion in sandwich. But only a tiny bit - enough to taste but not crunch! Its like the salt and pepper really I agree op, bougbt sandwiches always have far too much in

TheOneAndOnlyFell Thu 22-Aug-13 16:52:34

YABU. But they must be not too strong and not cut too thickly.

strokey Thu 22-Aug-13 16:53:14

'I like onions but they don't like me'.

Ive heard this said a few times about mussles and cucumber. I asked my husband what he thought it meant, he didn't know.

Is it indigestion? Stomach cramps?

What does it mean?

FrankSpenser Thu 22-Aug-13 16:55:04

I love red onions, but hate the inevitable Repeat therefore avoid. Which is a shame.

FrankSpenser Thu 22-Aug-13 16:56:04

I think it refers to the constant repeats it triggers.

HoneyDragon Thu 22-Aug-13 16:57:05

My MiL gets awful awful heartburn.

WeAreEternal Thu 22-Aug-13 16:58:55

I love a (soya) cheese and onion sandwich. Yabu.

FrankSpenser Thu 22-Aug-13 17:06:09

Do you chew gum after an onion sarnie? No matter how much i brush my teeth, the smell of onions is so present.

It must come from the stomach.

GrimmaTheNome Thu 22-Aug-13 17:06:38

sirzy - yes, but tomatoes don't give you bad breath (or wind/heartburn I'd have thought).

With onions, its not really a matter of whether you like them or not - its the passive inhalation by bystanders that makes them antisocial. grin

Xiaoxiong Thu 22-Aug-13 17:07:48

strokey I've always assumed it meant heartburn or the like. Someone eats onions and loves the taste and regrets it half an hour later.

I LOVE onions on certain types of sandwiches. Spring onions finely chopped in a tuna melt. Smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers and a paper-thin scattering of red onions. Roast beef, horseradish and sweet onions (Vidalia, Walla Walla Sweet or similar). Roast duck, hoisin sauce, cucumber and thinly sliced white onion.

But the common theme is how thinly the onion needs to be sliced, and I think that's why shop bought ones fall down - they don't take the time and care to get the onion really really thin.

urmydarlings Thu 22-Aug-13 17:10:53

another onion lover here, I'm known to thinly slice an onion and sprinkle salt on top then crunch at dinner time!!grin It goes great with a curry and rice.
of course I brush my teeth vigorously afterwards and chew some strong gum. so yes yabvvvu!!

Sirzy Thu 22-Aug-13 17:12:36

But tomatos leak and make the whole sandwich taste horrible!

DiaryOfAWimpyMum Thu 22-Aug-13 17:14:05

YABVVU I love red onions in sandwiches

Red onion is the best onion especially with that orange cheddar in a sandwich. Yum.

I used to eat onion sandwiches when I was younger. Loved them

SirChenjin Fri 23-Aug-13 12:06:15

You raw onion eaters all have stinky breath you know - even if you think you don't <boak>

GoblinQueen Fri 23-Aug-13 12:14:03

There's nothing worse than taking a big bite of grated cheese sandwich and finding its filled with sneaky chopped onions (and then having to swallow the fucker). I love cooked onions, onion relish (even cheese & onion crisps) but raw onion is just WRONG!! Bleugh

NoComet Fri 23-Aug-13 12:20:00

Totally agree the only place for raw onion is in a pan of hot oil/butter.

Bogeyface Fri 23-Aug-13 12:21:45

Raw onion triggers my IBS, which a handy excuse as I hate them anyway! If I go to Maccies I order my QP without onion or pickle because a) both are vile and b) it guarantees my burger is fresh and hasnt been sat there for half an hour.

I hate the fact that most meals come with oniony side salad too regadless of the type of meal, a burger and chips doesnt need a 50p sized piece of lettuce and a handful of onion on the plate, neither does lasagne! If I want a salad I will order it thank you!

sherbetpips Fri 23-Aug-13 12:22:53

raw red onion is a guilty pleasure that I always, always regret in indulging in at lunchtime. Lovely on tuna.

DidoTheDodo Fri 23-Aug-13 12:23:36

YANBU. I just agree. The end.

Runningchick123 Fri 23-Aug-13 12:25:33

I love red onions, but will only eat them away from home if I have chewing gum/ tic tacs.
Cucumber on the other hand should be banned from sandwiches as the human body cannot digest the skin of cucumbers and it all comes out as it went in (as well as the fact that they taste vile).

Floggingmolly Fri 23-Aug-13 12:28:46

Onions are the one foodstuff that enhances any dish, hot or cold. Curries, stews, roasts, salads, sandwiches, everything. I love onions...

phantomnamechanger Fri 23-Aug-13 12:32:42

red onion and tuna mayo sandwiches are delish

kali110 Fri 23-Aug-13 12:42:00

Yabu! Love onions esp red! Sandwiches salads stirfrys. I cant have a curry with some raw onions on top!!
Used to hate them as a child though

mycatlikestwiglets Fri 23-Aug-13 12:44:59

I can't believe some of you are still trying to justify yourselves and your foul smelling raw onion habits! Not sure why I posted this thread because I am clearly NBU <fresh smelling non-onionified grin due to careful selection of today's sandwich>

GrimmaTheNome Fri 23-Aug-13 13:03:22

>Totally agree the only place for raw onion is in a pan of hot oil/butter

Or tucked in with a roasting joint of beef. Mmmm ... who needs Bisto?

Why do I read these delicious threads when I have no fucking food in the house? angry

YABU. All sandwiches are enhanced by a smattering of onion, fresh cut raw or pickled raw.

Actually, my last post isn't true is it? Jam, peanut butter or chocolate spread can do without an onion garnish but hopefully that is obvious. grin

GrimmaTheNome Fri 23-Aug-13 13:32:20

No, no, no - if you've enough other tasty stuff in your sandwich, you don't need bloody stinky raw onions.

Cheese and chutney - raw onions superfluous if you've got good pickle.
Mozarella, basil and tomato, with black pepper. Onion would kill the lovely balance of flavours.
Roast beef and horseradish.

PunkHedgehog Fri 23-Aug-13 14:39:43

Raw onion is foul, and completely overpowers the taste of many of the things it's added to - why take a delicately flavoured egg mayo, or a subtle salad, and drown it out with brash, stinky onion?

However - with a large sample of both lovers and haters - this is the perfect place to test my theory. Are people who like raw onion on salad all smokers?

slapandpickle Fri 23-Aug-13 14:42:09

am I grim for liking a nice peanut butter and onion roll? works perfectly, the stickiness of the pb stops the onion falling out grin

Longdistance Fri 23-Aug-13 14:48:34

Onion, onion, onion, raw, raw, raw

<puts Pom poms down>

mycatlikestwiglets Fri 23-Aug-13 14:54:24

massive <boak> at peanut butter and onion roll.

Interesting theory PunkHedgehog!

PunkHedgehog Fri 23-Aug-13 15:02:37

Well, give me some data, people.

Do you
a) like onion
b) smoke (or used to smoke)

I'll start off: yuk and never.

PunkHedgehog Fri 23-Aug-13 15:02:58

* raw onion

Runningchick123 Fri 23-Aug-13 15:12:32

No, I like raw onion and I'm not a smoker - I have never smoked. Why wold a love of raw onion = being a smoker?
Some people have quite dull or developed taste buds and therefore like strong tasting foods such as onion or hot curry or jalapeños etc. some people have much less developed taste buds and so don't like anything pungent or bitter. Children generally don't like raw onions, hot curry, bitter vegetables or very spicy foods as their taste buds are not developed enough to deal with those flavours. There are exceptions to the rule though.
That's my theory anyway.

Crinkle77 Fri 23-Aug-13 15:15:19

I have to agree. I love them but just had a cheese and spring onion sandwich and can't get rid of the taste or the smell. Had loads of chewies and still won't go

GrimmaTheNome Fri 23-Aug-13 15:21:32

Its not a question of 'developed taste buds'. Its down to whether you have (a) a properly functioning sense of smell and (b) any consideration for other people.

By all means eat raw onions if you're e.g., a single handed round the world yatchswoman or a hermit, but if you live among others, its as bad as untreated halitosis or failure to use antiperspirant/deodorant.

thebody Fri 23-Aug-13 15:23:44

ha ha love love raw onions and stinky Stilton.

just brush teeth.

PearlyWhites Fri 23-Aug-13 15:28:09

Yabvu red onion and cheddar cheese sandwiches are the best smile

Runningchick123 Fri 23-Aug-13 16:32:08

I would rather smell onions that some of the other really vile smells that people have; BO, rotting teeth, unwashed lady bits, unwashed hair. To people that can't stand the smell of raw onions do you never eat garlic bread or curry or garlicky pasta or drink coffee? All these things also make the breath smell but that doesn't mean it's selfish to consume them.
Toothpaste and tic tacs or gum go a long way to lessening the linger of onion breath. People who like onions are usually aware of the pungent smell and do something about it unlike smokers who often (some smokers) don't realise that their breath stinks because they are so used to it.
As for the small of onions in the air whilst somebody is actually eating the sandwich, I personally think egg mayo is worse as it smells like fart.

SirChenjin Fri 23-Aug-13 16:45:40

Mmmm....raw onion and artificial mint breath <double boak>

mycatlikestwiglets Fri 23-Aug-13 16:58:25

Well, yes RunningChick, those things that you mention smell vile too. But the thread is about the unnecessary addition of raw onions to pre-packed sandwiches, which tend to be consumed at lunchtime and mainly by people who then have to mingle with other people in the workplace. The smell and taste doesn't go away all day, despite use of mints etc. That is why imho raw onions have no place in sandwiches!

Runningchick123 Fri 23-Aug-13 17:11:34

I don't have a workplace so I guess I'm exempt from being adorned with the title of selfish onion breath employee grin

phantomnamechanger Fri 23-Aug-13 17:37:00

I love raw onion
have never smoked

would rather someone's breath smelled of onion than stale smoke - would not even think of mentioning or inwardly moaning about someone else's food/smells - where do you draw the line - some of us don't like fish but others are free to eat it, likewise curries, garlicky food etc

I had a colleague who used to take a daily "odourless" garlic capsule (odourless my foot but I would never have mentioned it) and plenty of people smell of what they eat if they have a lot of spice/curry in their diet. It would never occur to me to pass judgement or comment.

Crowler Fri 23-Aug-13 17:39:56

I think garlic breath is pretty much unbearable. I don't think it's about passing judgement; it just is! I would be really unhappy to think that people found my breath unpleasant.

Toomuch2young Fri 23-Aug-13 17:54:32

Raw onion is fab, tasty, healthy and speeds up metabolism. What's not to love?!

SirChenjin Fri 23-Aug-13 17:54:52

I would never pass judgement - but I would be thinking that your breath was rank. I would hate for anyone to think that about my breath, so I stay away from stinky food when I know I'm going to be in a social environment, be it work or out with friends. A bit of consideration goes a long way...

miffybun73 Fri 23-Aug-13 18:46:17

YANBU, raw onion is an evil and stinky thing.
