To think that Dino Ferranti was a manipulative ass?

Just re-reading Riders and its struck me that he was being a complete ass to Fen - telling her that he wasn't going to wait around for her and if she wouldn't sleep with him he'd just go elsewhere. hmm

Crinkle77 Tue 30-Jul-13 16:21:33

Read Riders, Polo etc... years ago and loved them but can't remember much about the story lines I'm afraid but your post has inspired me to read them again. I used to skim read the pages looking for all the juicy sex scenes.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards Tue 30-Jul-13 16:29:03

Yes, but Rupert is such an arse in Riders that Dino looks like the perfect gent in comparison!

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 16:36:44

smile Crinkle. I love them for summer reading. Nice and light and I know then so well that I don't mind the million interruptions from the boys!

Very true bunchofbastards - your name is very appropriate! Except for Billy...he was quite sweet. Janey was a total bitch to him.

anonacfr Tue 30-Jul-13 16:37:42

Shut up! Dino was lovely... grin

Pollydon Tue 30-Jul-13 16:38:44

YANBU at all, he dyed his hair grey, ffs !!!!!

Most of the blokes in JC are total gits. Even the ones we are supposed to think are lovely have affairs etc.

MrsYamada Tue 30-Jul-13 17:34:48

:D I'm just reading this again too. YANBU - but I was more shock @ supposedly lovely Jake shagging the groom after his win.

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 18:07:07

Yes MrsYamada! He did go off with Helen too...hmmm. Are there any faithful husbands in JC at all?

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 18:08:10

Maybe dear old Crispin. Although, Hilary was cheating on him.

MrsYamada Tue 30-Jul-13 18:12:08

Shhh bumble, I've not got to that bit yet grin.

MrsYamada Tue 30-Jul-13 18:13:00

I'm a sucker for Billy, but even he broke Fen's heart. Bunch of bastards.

RedHelenB Tue 30-Jul-13 18:13:19

Sounds honest to me!

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 18:16:16

Oops! Didn't mean to spoil it for you wink

I know. I hated that Billy went back to Janey.

Bowlersarm Tue 30-Jul-13 18:22:01

They all have the morals of alley cats.

I have just been re-reading 'Jump' but finding it really hard going shock

I used to love Jilly but am struggling at the moment with her books.

How do I get back on track??

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 18:57:35

Go back to Riders, Rivals and Polo - they're the best IMO. I didn't think Jump! was that great tbh. I think she has a new one coming out this year.

Alconleigh Tue 30-Jul-13 19:09:26

I am re-reading Rivals, and loving it. I realised with horror today though that when I first read it I was Taggie's age, and now I am Rupert's. Yikes.

pointythings Tue 30-Jul-13 19:11:22

Malise Gordon was an OK kind of guy.

Can't think of any others that were though.

JerseySpud Tue 30-Jul-13 19:11:42

Aaaahhhh Jilly Cooper books.

I just started reading Jump! again

Alconleigh Tue 30-Jul-13 19:14:43

Even the nice men are pretty horrendous. Billy basically rapes Helen in the Kenya foursome. Declan sleeps with Cameron in Ireland. I do love them though; well, up to about Apassionata, they go downhill from there.

Bowlersarm Tue 30-Jul-13 19:15:27

bumbley am bit worried by her new book.

1) because it's her newer ones I struggle with
2) because in any interviews she always says something along the lines of Rupert being such a wanderer that he can't possibly stay faithful to Taggie. Nooo. I couldn't bear it.

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 19:21:43

pointy, true, Malise was nice.

Bowlersarm - Noooooooooooooooooooo! She better not!

weblette Tue 30-Jul-13 19:24:38

It all went wobbly after Appassionata and even that was iffy in places. Reading TMWMHJ atm, excellent stuff!

BeautifulBlondePineapple Tue 30-Jul-13 19:32:19

I'm re-reading Rivals at the mo. It is my absolute favourite JC book and has a fair share of cad free men e.g Declan &, Patrick O'Hara.

But I'd go for Rupert every time.

AudrinaAdare Tue 30-Jul-13 19:32:44

grin at all of us re-reading Jump. I just skimmed it the first time and reading am it properly now. It isn't great but I did cry yesterday at Billy / Amber / Rupert in the hospital sad

There was also that terrible scene in the hotel with the teenager and the foursome and it was just as horrible as the Helen, Janey, Billy and Rupert one. I was amazed that it wasn't seen for what it was all these years later and the aggressors ending up in prison!

AudrinaAdare Tue 30-Jul-13 19:37:20

Oh I remember her name now. Trixie. All of fifteen years old hmm

Manchesterhistorygirl Tue 30-Jul-13 19:39:59

I'm retreading riders right now too! Billy should never have gone back to Janey. Poor fen.

If rupert cheats on taggie I'll be furious!

StickyProblem Tue 30-Jul-13 19:52:24

Billy had to go back to Janey though, because in Jilly marriage is sacred. Very few marriages break up - even Jake went back to Tory although Helen stayed away from Rupert....
David Hawkley was nice....although he did shag married Georgie, while he was single himself...
I got the impression from Jump that Jilly can't be bothered to write about sex any more, so when she does its that awful bad sex she thinks teenagers have. Look at whatBilly and Janey got up to in Riders compared to poor Amber, who has a few bonks but no fun.
I liked Dino but I agree OP he could have been kinder to Fen, seeing as she was his future wife!
I think, sadly, much of Jilly just doesnt translate to modern times - all the men who hit women, never mind the serial shaggers....

Tell you who I can't stand....Viking. He comes across as a complete tit.

StickyProblem Tue 30-Jul-13 19:54:15

Talking of bad fictional characters, heal thyself AudrinaAdare ! I do hope you escaped your drippy husband and Whitefern!

MrsCampbellBlack Tue 30-Jul-13 19:55:31

I read Riders again recently and polo but Rivals still my favourite.

I never really liked Dino that much, loved Billy though and of course Rupert.

AudrinaAdare Tue 30-Jul-13 20:05:48

Stickyproblem are you saying that my family and upbringing were a tad dysfunctional? shock

AudrinaAdare Tue 30-Jul-13 20:07:14

I think you're right about sex in J.C. And totally agree about Viking. Twat.

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 20:46:27

I haven't read Appasionata in years... Or TMWMHJ - will have to dig out my old copies so we can compare them properly.

Another one here agreeing about the sex... How old was Jilly when she was writing her early books?

WMittens Tue 30-Jul-13 20:57:31

I misread the title, I thought it was about Dino Ferrari...

thispunderfullife Tue 30-Jul-13 21:07:40

I love this thread. I love Jilly cooper. And I totally agree with all comments posted here. wicked was extra awful I thought thought. Something about describing a kid with k watermelon smile....

Patrick ohara isn't horrible I don't think

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 21:09:12

Oh yes! I'd forgotten about Patrick! I did think that he was wasted on Cameron though. Why would you want to go out with someone who was still besotted with someone else?

I didn't like Wicked either...

thispunderfullife Tue 30-Jul-13 21:21:51

Wasted absolutely. Love Patrick but how hot are the Carlisle twins?! Lysanderevery time though

Lysander is also lovely, the way he adores Kitty...

TheDeadlyDonkey Tue 30-Jul-13 21:53:14

Although doesn't JC describe Kitty as huge (and Tory) and said they were around 11 stone?
I'd give my left buttock to be 11 stone!

Plomino Tue 30-Jul-13 21:53:54

Now Lysander got right on my nerves, being so feckless . But Ricky France Lynch , I SO would . Although I would probably settle for Bas as a occasional treat ..... Janey was bloody vile though , self absorbed cow .

YoureAllABunchOfBastards Tue 30-Jul-13 21:54:57

Lysander is lovely but dim.

Alizarin Belvedon is faithful, isn't he? And rather nice.

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 21:56:12

Alizarin belvwd

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 21:56:42

Alizarin belvedon? Have I missed a JC book?! I f

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 21:57:18

I don't remember him!

Stupid iPhone!

Bowlersarm Tue 30-Jul-13 21:58:10

AudrinaAdare Tue 30-Jul-13 21:58:47

"Pandora", OP.

It's next on my list.

Plomino Tue 30-Jul-13 21:58:51

Alizarin from Pandora ? With the god awful David and rosemary who runs away with the arms dealer .

bumbleymummy Tue 30-Jul-13 21:59:52

Ah. I only read it once. Will have to dig it out too. I don't even remember it!

AudrinaAdare Tue 30-Jul-13 22:01:43

Rosemary runs away with the arms dealer? shock

I definitely skimmed that one as well!

Alconleigh Tue 30-Jul-13 22:02:36

I STILL want to go to Patrick O'Hara's 21st. Dreadful selfish old lush that she is, Maud could throw a cracking party.

Plomino Tue 30-Jul-13 22:05:17

Yes , she does a runner after the painting is auctioned , with Zac's stepdad (seb ? Seth? ) and leaves Horrid David as the High and Dry Sheriff .

YoureAllABunchOfBastards Tue 30-Jul-13 22:07:15

Me too, Alconleigh. It would be a fab night out.

I like Rosemary.

Plomino Tue 30-Jul-13 22:07:23

Oh Maud ! The trampy one with a jewelled comb in her hair , drinking whiskey out of tea cups , whom everyone let get away with murder .

I always wanted to be her .

I've read them all except Score but I didn't finish Pandora or Appasionata (or if I did I can't remember the end)

There's all the earlier JC books too (Emily, Harriet, Lisa and Co....) my favourite was Octavia.
DH bought me Lisa and Co for Christmas when we were students (before he was DH) ,
Sweet smile

Alconleigh Tue 30-Jul-13 22:30:29

Did Caitlin Moran really rename herself after Caitlin O'Hara?
I really wanted to be Caitlin O'Hara, with the Honourable Archie.

Andro Tue 30-Jul-13 23:01:24

Rivals is Awesome BBP, I have to agree that it's the best book. Dino in Riders? He didn't exactly cover himself in glory...but he was far from the worst man in that book!

A really enjoyed Score as well, but I really lost track for who was having sex with whom.

StickyProblem Tue 30-Jul-13 23:13:43

Lol Audrina! Sorry to hijack away from Jilly but there were some top shits in My Sweet Audrina! Damian Adare and his "horny toenails", and his penchant for smacking people and shagging absolutely every woman he ever saw. What was the drippy husbands name, why am I thinking Lance, I'm sure it wasnt Lance....

I guess no-one fancied Rannaldini then... Perhaps Jilly overdid the 4 foot tall aspect. Its got to be Rupert for me, if you are going to fancy a fictional shit you might as well go all the way. I could see the attraction in Ricky F-L but he's a drunk driver FFS. Daisy also got on my nerves with all that blubbering, just empty the fucking dishwasher it ain't that hard.

washing up machine sticky Washing up machine wink

AudrinaAdare Wed 31-Jul-13 01:13:57

Sticky my DH is called "Arden". He has amber eyes and floppy hair, watched me being violated as a child, lied to me all my life, then we got married and expected to live happily ever after, as you do. He shagged my sister along the way and yes that was my Dad with the horny toenails. He was a very successful thief stockbroker but very charming.

You might be thinking of "Logan" who was the twat my author's creation "Heaven" stupidly fell in love with.

I love Rannaldini's dialogue. I always remember this line and can well imagine the bitchy and sinister tones with orchestra quaking:

"I 'ear tape of radio programme where you abort "The Creation". Poor Beethoven. I 'ope they didn't restore 'is hearing in heaven" - genius!

bumbleymummy Wed 31-Jul-13 10:28:28

I'm intrigued Audrina. I may have to try out those books next smile

bumbleymummy Wed 31-Jul-13 10:30:48

Should also say that I realise that Dino is not the biggest ass in the book but I had just got to that part and thought "what a jerk!' and had to share smile I think when I've read them before I had kind of glanced over his behaviour a bit but now I'm a bit annoyed that Fen actually ends up with him despite him treating her like that! Even though I do like the idea of them as a couple.... confused

AugustaProdworthy Wed 31-Jul-13 10:31:12

I'm halfway through 'Score!' for the millionth time. Thought JUmp and Wicked were awful though. Loved the earlier RCB books.

LadyBeagleEyes Wed 31-Jul-13 10:47:35

I've just re read Jilly Cooper's books, I loved the earlier ones - Harriet, Bella, Imogen etc,, there was a sweetness about them.
But I've just had a week in hospital reading Polo, and she really is a snob and appallingly sexist.
And I loathed Perdita, her most horrible ever character.

LadyBryan Wed 31-Jul-13 10:54:12

I LOVE Score - my absolute favourite.

I cannot bear Maud O'Hara and Georgie Maguire, awful mutton!

I rather like Alizarin Belvedon. Although did find Hengist rather attractive but an absolute sod.

bumbleymummy Wed 31-Jul-13 12:14:39

Yes, Perdita was a complete bitch to Luke. She didn't deserve him.

HatieKokpins Wed 31-Jul-13 12:33:15

Declan did NOT shag Cameron!

Bowlersarm Wed 31-Jul-13 12:38:26

I thought Declan definitely shagged Cameron in Ireland? That was one of the reasons Maude had a thing with Tony B.

bumbleymummy Wed 31-Jul-13 12:42:56

I thought they left it a bit open. I think someone accused him of sleeping with Cameron and said that was why he hadn't gotten his flight back on time and had missed her opening night at the play but I don't think it was confirmed or denied. I'd like to think that he hadn't sad He was very nice up to that point.

bumbleymummy Wed 31-Jul-13 12:43:42

As in, he was too guilty to make it to the play...Cameron had gone on ahead while he stayed to interview someone iirc.

Potteresque97 Wed 31-Jul-13 12:56:35

Rivals is my favourite. Agree perdita is vile but love polo for daisy and Luke.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards Wed 31-Jul-13 13:11:35

Cameron admits to Patrick that she slept with Declan, doesn't she?

HatieKokpins Wed 31-Jul-13 14:04:20

Nope, they're about to when Declan gets the phonecall about the play from thingummy. That's why Cameron is in such a filthy temper when she gets back to the theatre without Declan. The play is the last straw for Maude, and is why she finally leaves Declan. She'd been having the affair with TonyB for a while beforehand.

Patrick assumes Cameron and Declan slept together, and doesn't listen when Cameron denies it.

I re-read the book recently, I don't actually have it committed to memory. (much)

sallycinnamum Wed 31-Jul-13 14:14:25

This thread is well timed because I'm halfway through Pandora and can't work out if there is incest going on between Sienna and Jonathan? Surely even Jilly wouldn't sink that low?!!

anonacfr Wed 31-Jul-13 14:20:15

So Dino made a bitchy comment.

You do know that Rupert is an emotional and physical abuser and a rapist too?
Then he falls in love with a girl who's a dim and young enough to be his daughter (but she's ever so kind hmm and all of a sudden he's wonderful...

anonacfr Wed 31-Jul-13 14:22:05

Speaking of low which is the one with the GCSE students shagging their teachers/ friends' parents?

Bowlersarm Wed 31-Jul-13 14:23:10

Of course we know what Rupert is like.......

anonacfr Wed 31-Jul-13 14:29:22

But everyone still fancies him!!!

HatieKokpins Wed 31-Jul-13 14:31:25

I always preferred Billy. And Dino. And Luke. And Declan. And the Carlisle twins. Rupert is an arse, and I say that as someone who read Rivals first, so didn't know how bad Rupert was until I caught up with Riders a few years later, and was SHOCKED AND APPALLED AND THRILLED

Bowlersarm Wed 31-Jul-13 14:38:54

Well he is thrilling. And exciting. And the handsomest man in England. Why wouldn't you be enthralled? And you've been rude about Taggie which is more unforgivable angry.

Luke's the one for me smile

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit Wed 31-Jul-13 14:45:47

I've only ever read Polo. Am I going to have to read Riders and Rivals now? (They're on offer as a package on the kindle store...)

anonacfr Wed 31-Jul-13 15:08:34

I wasn't rude about Taggie, I think she's lovely in the books. I find it rather uncomfortable that throughout Rivals everyone keeps talking about how 'dim' she is.
Her siblings, her father.... They constantly go on about 'poor Taggie' on and on while taking advantage of her kindness.

Aside from the age difference and the sexual history I thought it added a layer of ick to the Rupert/Taggie relationship.

Ultimately the only thing she brings to the table (according to Jilly) are her looks and her innocence/sweetness/virginity.
I wished she could have fucked off with someone her age and broken Rupert's heart. He would have deserved it.

And yes, you HAVE to read Riders and Rivals. The unholy trilogy. grin

StickyProblem Wed 31-Jul-13 17:31:49

Funny isn't it how some of Jilly's characters are so perfect, and others don't quite come off?

I think Taggie is great as a kind, domestic, submissive character, because you see when she does all the canvassing for Venturer that she's actually very competent and determined - and also a few times she does actually shout at her awful exploiting family. Whereas Daisy on the other hand is meant to be so sweet but all that boozing and shagging doesn't go with it! Perhaps I shouldn't compare them, bearing in mind Daisy's difficulties with the washing up machine (thanks 70 smile ) I guess washing up machines were what the posh had, before cheap ones called dishwashers were invented...

Rupert is great as a difficult character who's awful to everyone, but Perdita is vile (although it probably works better on a man). Also Perdita is still a child at home whereas we first meet Rupert when he's living independently, so she comes across as a spoilt brat whereas he is more of an adult making his own way. Although Luke is great, he's pretty crap to all those women he strings along while he's waiting for Perdita to make her mind up....

Janey is a great character in Riders, I think Jilly was trying to show a woman with a strong sex drive and challenging career, but in later books she couldn't sustain it. In fact all the characters in Riders are real people, and in Rivals too pretty much, it's only when you get to the ones with millions of characters some of them go a bit cardboard.

I would say read them in order: Riders, Rivals, Polo, then TMWMHJ which I love, Appassionata, and after that probably don't bother. Saying that I have Score in my Amazon basket even though I know it's crap! (read it before and lost it)

Audrina thanks, of course it was Arden, the drip. Do you think we need a Virginia Andrews thread? or can we just say "slept with her uncle" and leave it at that, seeing as about 4 of her characters did?! Not in Jilly's league, and I would be embarrassed if someone read them now, but I would love to chew them all over with someone else who read them first time round!

bumbleymummy Wed 31-Jul-13 17:56:30

Was Virginia Andrews Flowers in the Attic?

StickyProblem Wed 31-Jul-13 18:00:31

bumbley yes, and My Sweet Audrina, which due to it only being one book rather than about 6 is relatively sensible (although still bonkers). She also did a series about Heaven but that was a bit crap IMHO.
I loved Flowers in the Attic! Read the second one first though. My friend in secondary school lent them all out from her mum, it took ages for Flowers in the Attic to go round!

AudrinaAdare Wed 31-Jul-13 18:03:50

My mum kept Flowers in the Attic and Audrina hidden in a cupboard. I read them in forbidden installments aged eleven shock

StickyProblem Wed 31-Jul-13 18:05:12

I read them in what would now be year 12. Internet porn, whatever - I would be horrified if DD read them at that age!

StickyProblem Wed 31-Jul-13 18:09:58

Sorry, not year 12, age 12. Year 8.

AudrinaAdare Wed 31-Jul-13 18:21:18

I think I only managed to comprehend half of it hence re-reading every couple of years and many light-bulb moments grin

My name is from a Viginia Andrews in Chat last year which has reminded me - if it's been that long I really need a new one. I gabble on about far too much stuff here!

bumbleymummy Wed 31-Jul-13 18:26:33

Haven't read the Audrina one...might see if I can get it on my iPhone! I"m curious now.

anonacfr Wed 31-Jul-13 22:59:48

Just bought Riders, Rivals and TMWMHJ on my Kindle. grin

bumbleymummy Wed 31-Jul-13 23:58:04

I bought the Audrina book off amazon. More trashy summer reading! smile

AudrinaAdare Thu 01-Aug-13 00:07:57

Hope you enjoy it bumbleymummy. It is bonkers but very entertaining.

Alconleigh Thu 01-Aug-13 00:19:34

Cameron tells Patrick that she slept with Declan; right at the end of the book. Sorry, but true.

Sparklysilversequins Thu 01-Aug-13 00:22:04

Declan definitely DOES sleep with Cameron in Ireland. It's left hanging at the time but later Patrick tells Cameron he knows that's why his Dad didn't make it back from Ireland.

StickyProblem Thu 01-Aug-13 00:24:16

I think Cameron and Declan did it too. After years of Maud bonking all and sundry, it was Declan's turn...

HatieKokpins Thu 01-Aug-13 16:26:49

they really, really don't, you know.

Bowlersarm Thu 01-Aug-13 16:47:37

......we need to re-read then supply a few quotes to prove one way or the other.....

Bowlersarm Thu 01-Aug-13 16:59:30

A ha - I have the proof - Declan and Cameron DID sleep together.....

'Yes, we will, I love you.' <Patrick>
'You can't any more. I've been such a bitch,' said Cameron, going very pale. 'Anyway, I love Rupert.'
'No you don't, or you wouldn't have gone to bed with my father in Ireland.'
'I didn't,' stammered Cameron.
'Yes, you did on the last night, and he felt so guilty about it afterwards, that's why he didn't get back for Mum's play.'
'Don't you mind?' said Cameron, appalled. 'It's practically incest.'

Tra la!!

PomBearArmy Thu 01-Aug-13 17:41:43

Jilly Cooper said Rupert was based on Andrew Parker-Bowles, who in my opinion, is far from being the handsomest man in England.

It does make me wonder what secret talents Camilla has, bagging the real life Rupert Campbell-Black and then the future King! wink

LittleBearPad Thu 01-Aug-13 18:04:42

I loved Rivals and Polo when I was young - still do really.

The remainder were never so good and I hated Wicked.

I love JC's belief that polo players exploits etc are front page news and a Uk/US polo match would naturally be shown in prime time grin.

Bowlersarm Thu 01-Aug-13 18:08:48

PomBearArmy I think it's generally acknowledged that jilly has terrible ideas about what makes someone handsome so you just have to ignore anything she says in RL and think of the images you have made up in your own head. My Rupert is absolutely nothing like Andrew Parker Bowles.

Sparklysilversequins Thu 01-Aug-13 18:17:17

I knew they had bowlersarm and was planning to quote that passage from the book if anyone continued to disagree today grin.

Bowlersarm Thu 01-Aug-13 18:22:02

Sparkly it took me ages to type all that out.....grin.

bumbleymummy Thu 01-Aug-13 19:28:56

Was anyone else incredibly disappointed by the TV version of riders?

Bowlersarm Thu 01-Aug-13 20:16:43

Yes, couldn't watch it.

no one on RL could possibly match up to the glamorous images of the characters we have in our heads.

Alconleigh Thu 01-Aug-13 20:24:51

Thanks for that bowlersarm, I was finding my Jilly knowledge being doubted quite distressing!

bumbleymummy Thu 01-Aug-13 20:46:14

Very true Bowlers! Rupert in particular just did not live up to expectations.

I'm at the part with Enrico 'salami cock' Mancini. He's yucky.

bumbleymummy Fri 02-Aug-13 10:08:32

My Sweet Audrina arrived in this morning's post! smile

CorrineFoxworth Fri 02-Aug-13 10:13:54

Prepare to go confused at the time-scales. Don't try to work out why the sister died aged nine seven or nine years before the seven year old was born yet her mother is in her mid-thirties. It's like in Jilly Cooper when polo and horse-racing are regularly featured in the tabloids. You have to suspend disbelief!
