justsosweatyandsmelly Sun 07-Jul-13 18:24:42

Was very sweaty and hot today when went out for lunch and I noticed I had whiffy body odour from armpits despite showering this morning and deodorant etc so quickly washed my armpits in the toilets and two women came in and said it was disgusting? wibu? I didn't think it was that bad really.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty Sun 07-Jul-13 18:29:02

I think stinking would be more disgusting grin

squoosh Sun 07-Jul-13 18:29:32

Well it is a washroom, people normally wash invisible particles of piss and shit off their hands at the sink, why is it so offensive that you washed your armpits?

peggyblackett Sun 07-Jul-13 18:29:41

Stinking would be far worse!

I can't see how it's any worse than men holding their penis to urinate then washing their hands in the sink.

LadyBeagleEyes Sun 07-Jul-13 18:30:18

Interesting username Op.
Is that your usual one?

peppapigmustdie Sun 07-Jul-13 18:30:51

I have done this before in a similar situation. Yanbu.

Is this for real? Not the washing the armpits bit I've done it, but what the women said to you? How rude.

It also doesn't make any sense. 'For sure, wipe your fanny but don't you dare get a paper towel and dap at your armpits in this room, thankyouverymuch.'

BadLad Sun 07-Jul-13 18:32:42

Next time wash them in the basins.

YANBU

BadLad grin

phantomnamechanger Sun 07-Jul-13 18:36:37

more detail needed - was this a full strip wash?

justsosweatyandsmelly Sun 07-Jul-13 18:37:02

of course it isn't my usual one as you knew full well, I namechanged as I was telling my friends about it and didn't want them linking my name to other posts should one of them come on here.

thanks for replying, I just quickly washed the sweaty smell away then rinsed the soap off so not offending anyone! should have said that about wiping particles of shit and piss grin

WorraLiberty Sun 07-Jul-13 18:37:12

Where are all these rude people who walk up to others to say things about really average/normal things, that most people wouldn't bat an eyelid at?

I just never seem to encounter them? confused

Perhaps I've got a fuck off face grin

WandaDoff Sun 07-Jul-13 18:38:57

I'd much rather be seen washing my armpits in public than stink.

LadyBeagleEyes Sun 07-Jul-13 18:39:04

No, Worra, I've never encountered them either.
Until I came on to MN that is wink.

McNewPants2013 Sun 07-Jul-13 18:39:11

Isn't that what what WC are for.

Chivetalking Sun 07-Jul-13 18:40:20

Did you blow dry them under the dryer à la Madge in 'Desperately Seeking Susan' too? grin

justsosweatyandsmelly Sun 07-Jul-13 18:40:52

thanks worra, really helpful post, that.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango Sun 07-Jul-13 18:43:16

Did you forget to mention in your OP that you removed your dress and bra first so they wouldn't get wet?

If not, then no, I don't think it's unreasonable to wash your armpits in the bathroom!

Were you hoping for some handholding, OP? confused

justsosweatyandsmelly Sun 07-Jul-13 18:46:23

not, not hand holding, i'm just stunned anyone would think I'd make such a stupid post up confused unless I misread the tone and the implication is I'm an argumentative bastard who shouts at random women when armpit washing thus goading them into response.

Charlie haha no sleeveless top so a quick wash grin

Letticetheslug Sun 07-Jul-13 18:48:29

of course YANBU, wish more peoplevdid a quick wash!

hugoagogo Sun 07-Jul-13 18:48:34

Damn chive you beat me to it. grin

Fakebook Sun 07-Jul-13 18:52:18

How did you wash your armpits without wetting your front? Why didn't you just wet some tissue and use that? Why weren't you carrying deoderant with you?

TimeofChange Sun 07-Jul-13 18:54:46

Fakebook: do you have deodorant in your handbag?

justsosweatyandsmelly Sun 07-Jul-13 18:55:50

fakebook, I wet my hands then wiped each armpit, then lathered my hands with soap put a bit on each armpit then rinsed my hands and wiped damp hands on each armpit until the soap had gone. then dried with a bit of tissue. didn't have deodorant with me because I guess i'm just not that organised ...

SisterMatic Sun 07-Jul-13 18:56:07

I have done it, I would rather that then stink.

Saying that I have walked into a pub toilet to be greeted by a woman peeing in the sink.

Wash away, OP..you have my support!

BellaVita Sun 07-Jul-13 18:59:21

I would have and have done it.

Lj8893 Sun 07-Jul-13 19:00:02

I don't get why people think this is so odd!

Have they not experienced the heat we have had today?! And would they rather the OP (or anyone else) went round smelling than having a quick unobtrusive wash?!

Maybe I have missed something....

ZolaBuddleia Sun 07-Jul-13 19:00:24

Was it a bar of soap, or a pump dispenser? One is much less minging than the other for slooshing round an armpit in a communal situation. grin

justsosweatyandsmelly Sun 07-Jul-13 19:03:54

hehe I didn't use the bar ON my armpit anyway - I lathered my hands and transferred to mingy sweaty armpit, but anyway it was a pump, nice soap too that bayliss & harding stuff grin

burberryqueen Sun 07-Jul-13 19:04:15

yanbu

I wouldn't have batted an eyelid at that!

Fakebook Sun 07-Jul-13 20:37:30

Yes, I do carry a roll on with me especially if I'm going to stay out longer than expected.

You sound like an expert at washing armpits in the sink OP. good job grin

sweetsummerlove Sun 07-Jul-13 20:45:07

this thread just made me LOL.

tbf, two young teens caught me barfing in a restaurant loo following a hot day + awful sickness during pregnancy. She tried hard to whisper (in that way teens do) about the 'fat woman barfing in the loo'
I was 38 weeks pregnant and had been barfing hourly for a week. I could have throttled her.

sweetsummerlove Sun 07-Jul-13 20:45:31

^ my point is, people are just stupid.

WafflyVersatile Sun 07-Jul-13 21:05:35

For future ref I find using an anti-bacterial (tea tree oil) wash under my pits in summer helps with this.

The smell is the excretia of the bacteria that noms on your sweat. Reducing the number of bacteria reduces the smell.

Also using oxy action or just dipping the underarms of your tops in boiling water will help if they tend to get smelly after repeated wears.

The women were being a bit silly.

LouiseSmith Sun 07-Jul-13 21:40:11

Since I have put on extra weight I seem to suffer with BO despite how many times I shower or spray so I have started keeping a small one in my handbag.

Hopasholic Sun 07-Jul-13 22:49:31

That's nothing. I once witnessed a shitfaced young lady do a hand stand under the hand dryer to dry her fanjo as there wasn't any loo roll grin

Nobody told <her> she was disgusting, just admired her balancing skills after a day on the Stella.

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper Sun 07-Jul-13 23:12:01

I feel like a right oddball now because my first thought was GROSS followed by how rude those ladies were to say anything. I would have thought you were disgusting too but wouldn't have said anything smile

HotCrossPun Sun 07-Jul-13 23:19:43

Carrying deodorant wouldn't really have helped in this situation.

If you have BO the only thing that is going to get rid of the smell is washing, spraying on top of it is going to do SFA.

iago Sun 07-Jul-13 23:25:01

Anti-perspirant stops sweating. Deodorant masks smell.

WafflyVersatile Sun 07-Jul-13 23:54:32

Anti-perspirant has never stopped me sweating. Reduced it maybe.

mylovelymonster Mon 08-Jul-13 00:05:22

Ridiculous attitude. People can be so prissy. Much rather you were comfortable - why not?????

squoosh Mon 08-Jul-13 00:32:17

Sweat is the least offensive of the bodily emissions most commonly found in bathrooms.

Wbdn28 Mon 08-Jul-13 00:44:17

Carry some wet wipes with you and a spray deodorant, then you can freshen up quickly in the cubicle (unless there's a queue) without having to be at the sink.

Tee2072 Mon 08-Jul-13 06:51:12

Sounds like you did it with finesse OP!

Lavenderloves Mon 08-Jul-13 07:04:29

If i do this i usually soap my hands and then go into a cubical so that if anyone comes in they can't see me. Then clear off with loo roll.

That's the crazy british way isn't it? I'm always sweaty it's rubbish. Wipes are a god send.

ClartyCarol Mon 08-Jul-13 07:12:34

Botox for the armpits, that's the way to go. My pits aren't excessively sweaty I must add do get chub rub though, but I have heard about the Botox treatment.

Also I agree with Worra - I read so many threads on here about pathologically outspoken members of the public, but I've never come across one myself <deprived>.

Selks Mon 08-Jul-13 07:31:07

Can't understand why anyone would find what the OP did disgusting at all. Uncommon to see, yes, but disgusting.... Why??

DiamondDoris Mon 08-Jul-13 07:42:18

That's not disgusting. The snipped pubic hair I once found on the toilet seat was. This was a supermarket loo.

Chivetalking Mon 08-Jul-13 10:11:58

Oh Doris. That's gross. Puts me in mind of the time I went into the loos at work and found the secretary shaving her legs on the bench under the coats. She left the clippings there too <barf>

WTF anyone would trim any part of their pelt in public really is beyond me.

Lweji Mon 08-Jul-13 11:15:36

Not gross at all. grin

You should have told them "At least I won't be smelling.

However, note that without deodorant, your smell would have returned soon after.

my brother once saw a man use the urinal and then turn round and walk with his penis still out to the sinks and he then washed his penis in the sink.

mind you, this was in the loo at the tesco in elephant and castle, so it probably wasn't the weirdest thing that had happened in there that day.
