To think every person should know not to kiss a dog on the cheeks?

Well, I'm sure I am it would be unreasonable to expect that, but now that I have got your attention I just want to mention this, feel free to pass it on in order to prevent more accidents:

From the human perspective, a kiss on the cheek is a harmless expression of friendlyness, from a dog perspective it's a different thing:

If dogs were still running wild, the way they would kill their prey would be by grabing it by the neck and giving it a good shake. This is still embeded in dogs' nature, you have seen them playing with toys this way.

In the same way, when 2 dogs fight, the one that grabs the other's neck is the one who wins the fight, with a good likelyhood of the less lucky one dying in the process.

It is therefore that when a dog sees another mouth going straight in the direction of its neck, the ancient instict of survival just kicks in and they bite back.

It may be that you kiss your dogs' cheeks without problem, but then your dogs trust YOU enough not to react, but this might not be the case with visits, other people, or even other members of your family.

So please teach your children that it is not safe to kiss even friendly dogs on the cheeks and, do not let anyone try to kiss your dog on the cheeks either. If this was general knowledge, many accidents coukd be avoided, many people wouldn't have been hurt and many friendly dogs wouldn't have been put to sleep.

Thank you,

I don't think dogs have cheeks hmm

hiddenhome Sun 30-Jun-13 16:41:16

I kissed my cat's tummy and he got a shock and thought I was trying to disembowel him so he attacked my hair confused

MultumInParvo Sun 30-Jun-13 16:43:03

My dogs don't have cheeks. They have faces that go straight to necks.

TheDetective Sun 30-Jun-13 16:43:11

YABU. I kiss mine on the nose. She kisses me anywhere she can get to. Soppy bugger.

charitygirl Sun 30-Jun-13 16:43:11

Am imagining someone air-kissing a dog now. Ha!

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 16:43:37

my dog doesnt have cheeks he has a long nose/moth and face I will inspect when he comes back but not kiss him obviously grin

People try to kiss dogs on their cheeks? Really? How bizarre. confused

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 16:45:08

My dog tries to put his bum cheeks in my face so it is sort of kissing his cheeks confused

Why would anyone try to kiss a dog on the cheek!?
I've always had a dog and never come across anyone that would think this was a good idea. confused

Littleballofhate Sun 30-Jun-13 16:45:45

I was always taught never to put my face next to a dogs face. When did all this canine cheek snogging start?

maras2 Sun 30-Jun-13 16:46:40

Who the heck would want to kiss a dog anywhere ?

Mrsrobertduvall Sun 30-Jun-13 16:47:00

I wouldn't kiss a dog anywhere, let alone his cheeks, be they face or arse.

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 16:47:24

I never kiss my dog on the face my dds dont either why would people kiss dogs faces cheeks or otherwise, my dogs face is always in his bits or up his bum <heave> id rather not

my dog just loves a good cuddle, head to head. But then she is possibly the laziest dog in the world, too lazy for walks and certainly too lazy to be aggressive.

ITCouldBeWorse Sun 30-Jun-13 16:48:28

I'm pretty sure people should not kiss dogs at all.

I don't think other people should be expected to know about different breeds bizzare variations.

Like whatever breed it is that feels pain if you push it's 'shoulders', so when someone's unsupervised hound of the baskervilles jumps up at you, you are supposed to stand still terrified while it drools on you so it does not savage you.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee Sun 30-Jun-13 16:51:36

Yanbu, everyone knows the best place to kiss a dog is its cool wet nose mmmmmmm

Gonnabmummy Sun 30-Jun-13 16:55:56

My dogs give kisses well licks all the time. They jump on the bed when in the morning and do this. They don't try to kill me. it is not aggresive behaviour If you observe dogs in the wild or wolves you will notice that if one approaches the other right away no aggression shown they will lick around the other dogs mouths this is a sign of respect/ submission. All packs show this behaviour.
Yabu it's one thing to not allow small children to approach a dogs face but an adult can choose to kiss their dog if hey want.

SkinnybitchWannabe Sun 30-Jun-13 16:56:06

The thought of kissing a dog anywhere makes me want to vomit.

Chandras Sun 30-Jun-13 16:57:37

I love my dogs, they are like my children and I know where the limits are, but it has struck me to see that everytime you read in the news some one has been mauled by a dog on the face, it almost always say something about the victim just wanting to give a dog a kiss and the owner being totally in shock about the dog reacting like that.

So no need to agree or disagree with me, kiss your dogs as much as you want but bear this in mind :-)

SisterMatic Sun 30-Jun-13 16:57:58

I would, but then I know a dog that eats his own doggy face kisses are off the menu.

I can do pats, strokes, cuddles and bellyrubs though.

Corygal Sun 30-Jun-13 17:03:05

I smother Mr Cory, the fat tabby, in belly kisses and smackers on the cheek. He tolerates it graciously as just another weird human thang from his daft fat servant.

hugoagogo Sun 30-Jun-13 17:11:55

You shouldn't kiss dogs full stop.

It is icky.

BellEndTent Sun 30-Jun-13 17:15:25

Thanks for the info - will put it away for later. Isn't there something about putting your head on top of your dog's head or letting them do it to you that can be dangerous too? Is it a sign of dominance or have I had a (very odd and boring) dream?

I didn't know this but wouldn't do it IYSWIM? Grim!

maja00 Sun 30-Jun-13 17:20:09

I have never heard of anyone trying to kiss a dog's cheeks, and have never read that coming up in newspaper reports of dog attacks confused

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS Sun 30-Jun-13 17:22:42

Yanbu. Dogs are dirty little fuckers. Why on earth would you snog one on the face?!

Feenie Sun 30-Jun-13 17:30:41

Have you read this story from last Friday?

Stupid, stupid teacher and poor, poor dog sad

crashdoll Sun 30-Jun-13 17:34:36

LOL at snogging a dog's 'cheeks'!

DramaAlpaca Sun 30-Jun-13 17:35:27

YANBU. Kissing a dog anywhere is utterly disgusting.

Disclaimer: I love dogs, but I wouldn't kiss one (or allow my children to do so).

digerd Sun 30-Jun-13 17:38:49

I kissed my dachshund on the cheek from the back as she was getting fed up with me not finding her ball she had deliberately plonked behind the sofa and the wall - she whipped her head round and snapped with frustration, not knowing my nose was in reach of her teeth.
My nose swelled up and had to have a tetanus jabs at GPs. DH didn't tell me off, just laughed at my silliness. grin

Latara Sun 30-Jun-13 17:52:01

YANBU I wouldn't kiss a dog on the cheeks; i daren't even kiss my cat on the face (i kiss her on the tummy but only if i'm holding her paws first which irritates her no end so i have to make a quick getaway!)

Mappa Sun 30-Jun-13 18:02:04

YANBU, I give my dog full on snogs grin but I suppose I would be surprised if someone else did

ThirdTimesABrokenFanjo Sun 30-Jun-13 18:02:33

MarianneEnjolras Sun 30-Jun-13 18:04:52

I kiss my cat on the head and she head bops me in return.

Would never want to kiss a dog though.

Leverette Sun 30-Jun-13 18:07:26

I kiss my gorgeous dog everywhere above the waist because she's my big hairy baby grin

Samu2 Sun 30-Jun-13 18:10:17

I would also kiss my dogs cheeks. He loves it.

I wouldn't kiss a dog that wasn't my own, ever.

SugarPasteGreyhound Sun 30-Jun-13 18:34:12

I kiss the top of their heads. Small dog isn't a kissy boy, but big dog loves trying to dish out full on snogs. However sadly he also has an unattractive habit of scarfing random poo <boak>, so the kissing is strictly one way in this house.

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee Sun 30-Jun-13 18:36:25

Was the gin good?

EleanorFarjeon Sun 30-Jun-13 18:36:50

I have just looked at my dog. He has no cheeks.

I kiss the top of his head.

Bowlersarm Sun 30-Jun-13 18:38:53

Thank you for the information OP. I am always kissing and cuddling my dogs, I can't seem to stop myself, but it's useful to know it's not ok to do it to dogs you don't know well.

HoneyDragon Sun 30-Jun-13 18:38:59

Never, ever hug an Armadillo. I don't think most people know this.

Used to love kissing all over my beloved dog's face, as a child and even as a grown up, not ashamed to admit it! He was the soppiest lab in the whole world, such a lovely boy.

I do get where you're coming from though OP.

IneedAyoniNickname Sun 30-Jun-13 18:40:54

I'd love to hug an armadillo HD they are so.cute! Why can't I?

I never knew about.kissing a dogs cheeks, but then.I wouldn't kiss a dog at all! Yuck!

everlong Sun 30-Jun-13 18:42:42

Tops of dogs heads are the place to kiss.

littlewhitebag Sun 30-Jun-13 18:45:34

I kiss my dog on her cheek/jowls all the time. Just did it a moment ago. She just gave me her long suffering look. No way did she look like she was going to maul me.

HoneyDragon Sun 30-Jun-13 18:46:36

See. Masses of people totally uneducated in the way of the Armadillo.

IneedAyoniNickname Sun 30-Jun-13 18:47:51

But why can't I hug an armadillo? Other than the obvious that I wouldn't know where to find one.

Onetwo34 Sun 30-Jun-13 18:48:51

I don't think you ought to try to kiss a dog on the cheek because you'll probably end up with a dog tongue in your mouth. Bleugh.

HoneyDragon Sun 30-Jun-13 18:52:54

Because if you hug and armadillo your skin drops off - true Fact

IneedAyoniNickname Sun 30-Jun-13 18:57:50

Oh! sad

hahathatsme Sun 30-Jun-13 19:03:32

maybe these dogs attack because they just didn't want a randomer coming up and kissing them, regardless of where it was? hmm I second the person who said licking the mouth area is a sign of submission. But I would never encourage my child to kiss a dog anywhere, they are disgusting things with foul habits that human mouths should not go near!

HoneyDragon Sun 30-Jun-13 19:04:27

Tbh. Being a couple of foot away from the wrong Armadillo could also result in bits dropping off you too.

Dogs are safer. There's only so much a Pomeranian can chew off before you escape.

Hug and Armadillo, all your bits drop of then you die.

HoneyDragon Sun 30-Jun-13 19:05:48

But you should only hug people not dogs really unless you are 100% certain you dog likes it. And children should NEVER hug dogs.

Does this apply to French dogs as well?

LST Sun 30-Jun-13 19:18:10

YABU. We all kiss our dog on the cheek.

BabyMakesMyEyesGoSleepy Sun 30-Jun-13 21:07:06

I can kiss and hug my dog. He is the laziest dog ever and he wouldn't be bothered to make the effort to lift his head, never mind growl. I hoovered around him today. Even when I was pushing his bum he wouldn't move.

melika Sun 30-Jun-13 21:12:52

My mongrel has a marking on each cheek and that's where I always kiss him, my 2 ds do it too. Never thought it was dangerous, he has never shown any agression.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie Sun 30-Jun-13 21:14:07

I like kissing dogs on the bit where their whiskers grow. It's sort of plump and cute. blush

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie Sun 30-Jun-13 21:14:28

I don't do it to randomers though...only dogs who love me and know me.

Rahahaharubbish Sun 30-Jun-13 21:15:00

I just roused my stupid Border Collie to test this theory and proper nom nom nomed his neck while he looked at me a tad bemused and did a token ear lick, I think to make me feel a bit better about the whole love in. He's back under the table now looking at me and I just know he's wondering what the jeff that spontaneous display of affection was all about blush

ShowOfHands Sun 30-Jun-13 21:21:34

I've never read a report about a dog attack where anybody said they wanted to kiss the dog. People who want to kiss random dogs are a whole heap of wrong anyway.

I do know you shouldn't dry hump a porcupine though.

HoneyDragon Sun 30-Jun-13 21:24:22

Because of course it's so much better with lube Showy

CatInWellies Sun 30-Jun-13 21:36:33

I know from first hand experience you should never give a llama a high five <<shakes head gravely>>

HoneyDragon Sun 30-Jun-13 22:21:41

You guys do know I'm telling the truth about Armadillos don't you? grin

Armadillos can give you Leprosy.

Never do bumsex with an ostrich, even if it is a Friday and you're at Center Parcs.

digerd Mon 01-Jul-13 12:01:18

How on earth did this thread go from kissing your dog on the cheek to having bumsex with an ostrich on a Friday at Center Parcs grin

Fakebook Mon 01-Jul-13 12:08:18

How about not kissing dogs full stop. It's disgusting. Just keep your children away from dog spit and slime.

HoneyDragon Mon 01-Jul-13 13:02:40

And leprosy. Don't forgot Armadillo Leprosy.

I want to google armadillo leprosy but I'm worried what I might find wink.

This thread made me dream that I had an enormous dog - as big as a donkey. I checked, he didn't have cheeks.

HoneyDragon Mon 01-Jul-13 18:28:07

In the interests of this thread, I feel it is important to highlight that dogs do have cheeks.

As we can see demonstrated by HullyGully in some fetching rouge

So for those who kiss dogs, that is where they kiss them.

Iwantmybed Mon 01-Jul-13 21:20:30

My dogs breath smells of death to be avoided at all costs
