for BlackBerry is actually two overlapping Bs and not the cluster of dots I've assumed it to be for the past five years of BlackBerry ownership?!

What blindingly obvious things have you failed to notice?

CuppaSarah Sun 30-Jun-13 11:55:01

I thought it was a cluster of berries. shock

Bowlersarm Sun 30-Jun-13 12:00:00

I knew that!

What I didn't know until yesterday after years of driving, is that the roundabout road sign isn't a closed circle-there is a gap in it.

OwlinaTree Sun 30-Jun-13 12:03:29

I thought sprouts grew individually like cabbages in rows. My dad pointed out a sprout bush in the garden and i was...oh.

picnicbasketcase Sun 30-Jun-13 12:11:31

It blew my mind when I saw pictures of pineapples growing, and then I felt very silly that I didn't know before that they don't grow on trees like coconuts.

CrowsLanding Sun 30-Jun-13 12:15:05

Pineapples don't grow on trees? shock

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts Sun 30-Jun-13 12:15:51

Where do pineapples grow then?! confused

catgirl1976 Sun 30-Jun-13 12:17:55

Totally gobsmacked about the pineapples

"What I didn't know until yesterday after years of driving, is that the roundabout road sign isn't a closed circle-there is a gap in it."

Sometimes, sometimes not. They mean different things.

Alibabaandthe40nappies Sun 30-Jun-13 12:19:53

Pineapples grow in the ground.

I know this from Bob the Builder hmm

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 12:23:17

eh what I thougt pineapples grew on pineapple trees do they not , shock

DowntonTrout Sun 30-Jun-13 12:25:35

That a dual carriageway is defined by a road that has a physical barrier separating the two opposing flows of traffic, be this a grass verge, railings, a kerbed pavement down the centre etc. thereby meaning two separated carriageways and not just two lanes of traffic in each direction.

picnicbasketcase Sun 30-Jun-13 12:26:01

Google images of growing pineapples, they don't look how you'd imagine at all.

Auntlinny Sun 30-Jun-13 12:26:42

Pineapples grow like cabbages. Have seen fields and fields of them in Queensland. I always thought that the kiwi (bird) was the same size as a kiwifruit. Really surprised when i saw one - big fluffy thing.

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 12:27:59

I thought A kiwi bird was named after the fruit apparently it is a mowri word blush

RinkyDinkyDoo Sun 30-Jun-13 12:28:56

Omg,just googled pineapples. Wow,we'll that's something myself and DH have learned today, they don't grow on trees.

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 12:28:58

I didnt know the Nile went all through a lot of Africa I assumed it was just in Egypt

Auntlinny Sun 30-Jun-13 12:30:52

Yep - the kiwi fruit was named as some sort of marketing ploy by the growers/ exporters. Used to be called Chinese gooseberries apparently.

MorrisZapp Sun 30-Jun-13 12:31:45

It's not that obvious I suppose but here goes. Martin Short the American actor is the cousin of Claire Short the UK politician.

I still cannot see the b's

Nerfmother Sun 30-Jun-13 12:32:40

I knew about pineapples from being obsessed with Elvis and Blue Hawaii when I was little.

LongGoneBeforeDaylight Sun 30-Jun-13 12:35:55

I thought the batman logo was a yellow mouth with big teeth. Only realised it was a bat last year. confused

workhouse Sun 30-Jun-13 12:41:33

Iv'e just recently found out, from a thread on Mumsnet, that a fortnight is a shortened version of fourteen nights. How did I get to fifty five without realising this!

DowntonTrout Sun 30-Jun-13 12:45:31

Most things we call nuts are not nuts. They are either legumes or drupes.

So peanuts, walnuts, cashew, brazil nuts etc are not nuts.

Hazelnuts, Acorns and chestnuts are nuts.

Does nobody watch QI?! smile

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 12:47:39

. Used to be called Chinese gooseberries apparently.

is chinese goosberries not those little orange things you get at the side of ice creams or cake in restaurants ?

daisychain01 Sun 30-Jun-13 12:47:48

Oooerr that's clever! The blackberry Logo is 2 x B's!! Its a Capital B and a small b. plus its a blackberry fruit

Whoever designed that is awesome.

Best sketch ever is The one Ronnie With Corbett and Harry Enfield as the shopkeeper - wont spoli it incase you want to youtube it but his blackberry was frozen smile ..... memories of the 2 Ronnies sketch all about O's (hoes) 4 candles (fork 'andles) and bull' ooks (I'll leave that to your imagination)

daisychain01 Sun 30-Jun-13 12:48:31

Just looked it up on my DHs Blackberry Playbook cover!

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 12:48:55

Does nobody watch QI?!

that is where i got my NIle Knowledge in fact most of my general knowlege comes from QI grin

ShellyBoobs Sun 30-Jun-13 12:54:37

Is it not 4 B's?

DowntonTrout Sun 30-Jun-13 12:58:01

I luffs QI!

cocolepew Sun 30-Jun-13 13:12:11

I never realised that about a fortnight either hmm
Proper loling at a kiwi birds being the same size as the fruit

Awizardsstaffhasaknobontheend Sun 30-Jun-13 13:23:06

Baked beans are cooked in the can.... Not a huge vat stirred by chefs!

jellybrain Sun 30-Jun-13 13:27:25

Downton did you attend a speed awareness course this week? Just I learnt exactly the same thing about dual carriage ways at one on Tuesday grin

Why are there 4 Bs in the BlackBerry logo? That doesn't make sense.

squoosh Sun 30-Jun-13 13:36:46

God I would never have noticed that about the Blackberry logo. It's like one of those pictures of dots you're supposed to stare at until you see Jesus standing on a dolphin or something. Never worked for me.

And as for pineapples - MIND BLOWN!

lachrymavitis Sun 30-Jun-13 13:38:15

After having three children, all of whom are now out of babygrows, I have finally discovered that the envelope neckline means you can remove them by pulling them down rather than over their heads.

My babies all had very pooey heads...

terrible mother.

Thanks to another MN thread

furbaby Sun 30-Jun-13 13:42:29

Did, nt realize blackberry logo either .
Until I was about 20 I thought that moles were the same size as badgers smile
I blame wind in the willows !
Lucky they are a lot smaller as we have a mole living in the garden and he makes enough mess even though he, s small .

furbaby Sun 30-Jun-13 13:43:22

smile at pooey head ....

Ha ha. I too have subjected my children to a good smearing when removing their soiled vests.

'p's and q's' is short for pleases and thank yous. I never knew, although it was blindingly obvious to my 5yo.

Elderflowergranita Sun 30-Jun-13 13:46:18

Mrsjay, you are thinking of cape gooseberries or physallis.

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 13:47:29

Mrsjay, you are thinking of cape gooseberries or physallis.

ah ok am I blush

PoppyAmex Sun 30-Jun-13 13:53:14

DH also thought pineapples and... watermelons grew on trees.

I'm from a country that's a big producer of both and it always amused me to imagine being hit by a pineapple or a watermelon dropped from a tree. It would kill you! grin

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 13:55:07

OH i knew water melons grew in the ground

elQuintoConyo Sun 30-Jun-13 13:55:13

I knew about pineapples - shocked at how something so simple is so unknown, are the government hiding things?
DH only realised recently that ironing boards are so-shaped as to ease the ironing of shirts! Doh!

squoosh Sun 30-Jun-13 14:08:35

furbaby me too!

I always thought moles were huge big chaps, saw a picture of one recently and they are teeny! I blame Wind in the Willows, Moley was quite big in that.

SilverOldie Sun 30-Jun-13 14:35:28

I still call chinese gooseberries (kiwi fruits) chinese gooseberries. That's what they were called when I first tried one.

Re pineapples, as long as the middle leaves haven't been removed (which some shops do to make them last longer), you cut the leaves off with about an inch of the fruit. Then dry it for a few days. You can then plant it and it will grow new leaves; not sure how long you would have to wait for a fruit to appear. Check this link out if you want to try it www.rickswoodshopcreations.com/pineapple/pineapple.htm

furbaby Sun 30-Jun-13 14:36:11

Glad its not just me squoosh smile

Mind you I did tell my daughter that I had thought moles were badger sized when she was about 20 and she said she always thought the same as me that they were badger sized ........ bloody wind in the willows has a lot to answer to Lol smile

QueenStromba Sun 30-Jun-13 14:39:43

Ooh. Turns out that watermelons are in the same subfamily as cucumbers, pumpkins and loofahs.

fluffyraggies Sun 30-Jun-13 14:46:19

Monkey nuts grow underground.

Found that out about a year ago. I thought they grew on trees blush

I can't believe no one had mentioned the Disney "D" yet. When I realised that was a D it blew my mind grin

cardibach Sun 30-Jun-13 15:01:54

What Disney D, SomeDizzy?

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 15:02:03

Ooh. Turns out that watermelons are in the same subfamily as cucumbers, pumpkins and loofahs.

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 15:02:48

CrowsLanding Sun 30-Jun-13 15:07:21

Are we supposed to see Mickey Mouse in the Disney D??

I can't see anything!

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 15:10:40

I have just been staring at the Disney D i cant see anything

WeAreSix Sun 30-Jun-13 15:12:58

What's special about the Disney D?

CrowsLanding Sun 30-Jun-13 15:15:13

I just googled Disney D. Apparently people get confused thinking the D is a G and the Y is a P hmm
I see the D as a D and a Y as a Y confused

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 15:18:58

Ujjayi Sun 30-Jun-13 16:12:56

Just googled the Disney logo issue: apparently it contains the satanic message 666..... I can see it now but personally not convinced it is deliberate.

cocolepew Sun 30-Jun-13 16:15:39

Do all melons grow on the ground then? I just presumed they grew on trees too.

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 16:36:51

so it is true Disney really is the devil grin

mrsjay Sun 30-Jun-13 16:38:13

Melons grow on bushes apart from water melon ( i think)

answers Sun 30-Jun-13 16:42:21

Fair trade logo ... thought it was like a pacman figure and then finally saw the man waving!!!

It took me ages to realise that the arrow in the Amazon logo is going from the A to the Z and is not a smiling mouth. Sad.

milewalker Sun 30-Jun-13 17:02:59

melons grow like pumpkins, on a long stalk. some of the flowers are male, some female. the bees come along do their bit and the female flower turns into a melon. I grow them most years in my greenhouse.

OwlinaTree Sun 30-Jun-13 17:04:27

Have you seen the arrow in the fed ex logo?

I hadn't noticed the FedEx arrow, which is more by accident than design...but in Arabic it goes from right to left!

fluckered Sun 30-Jun-13 17:56:57

took me ages that the DELL logo is not just as lop sided E but is a floppy disk

fluckered Sun 30-Jun-13 17:59:17
OwlinaTree Sun 30-Jun-13 18:04:59

Very interesting fluckered Liked the bronx zoo one the best

Kiwi fruit aren't supposed to be called kiwi fruit any more. They are called zespri. Apparently countries with a big export in them, like Argentina, objected to the name...
And hooray that everyone here are calling them kiwi fruit! Hate when they are called kiwis. I am a kiwi. Am I brown and hairy and green in the middle??
Don't answer that... grin

fluckered Sun 30-Jun-13 18:07:37

I like the toblerone one ... have eaten loads of them over the years and never copped the bear in the mountain.

gremlindolphin Sun 30-Jun-13 18:17:59

I got to the age of 43 without knowing that the days of the week come from names of gods thors day, wodins day etc can't remember the others but it blew my mind! I was very cross with dh for not telling me!

Adam Ant. Never understood why he called himself that, the man looks nothing like an ant nor did he dress as one.

ADAMANT. Ohhhh.

The amazon thibg is meant to be a smile as well isnt it? I have looked at the disney d and cannot see how it cannpossibly be a g

FariesDoExist Sun 30-Jun-13 21:35:03

adamant!Oh my god! I feel so stupid

CalamityJ Sun 30-Jun-13 21:43:34

Another one who thought pineapples and watermelons grew on trees. Lol at the idea of them falling out of the trees!

GinOnTwoWheels Sun 30-Jun-13 21:53:10

I hate threads like these because when you google Blackberry/Disney etc you get adverts for these items for days on end afterwards. I did have the adblocker thing but it disappered and I haven't got round to setting it up again. (I still don't get all the Bs in the logo, I just see something that looks sort of like a blackberry (fruit).

I've learnt quite a few things from this thread, but already knew that moles were a lot smaller than I'd imagined as I'd seen one that had been run over sad and indeed it was more like rat sized than badger sized. Respect to them though with the size of molehills for such a little creature grin.

I also learnt that courgettes were in the same family as squash when I tried to cut up what I thought was a funny cucumber that I'd grown but it turned out to have a much harder skin than I expected.

However, I dispute QI as the font of all knowledge as I read something in their book that I know is wrong.

But I must tell DSis, mother of 5 so she ought to know better, that she was wrong when I asked her why babies vests have those funny envelope shoulders and she replied 'so it is easier to get their arms in'.

I did not know that Frost was played by the same actor as dell boy in only fools and horses...
And that Liam was short for William. Duh.

QueenStromba Sun 30-Jun-13 22:10:53

Liam is also a name in it's own right (Irish) but can be a shortening of William.

The blackberry thing is white capital Bs on a while background with their interior bits black

TinaSurrey Sun 30-Jun-13 22:18:58

God - are moles not badger size? The things I learn on MS :-)

TinaSurrey Sun 30-Jun-13 22:19:41

I am shocked that pineapples don't grow on trees. I thought they grew on palm trees shock I want to waken dh up to see if he knows this!!

Some of those logos are brilliant! Don't get the D in Disney though. It's just a D? It doesn't look like a G.

I only found out last week through a mn thread what the fold down bits on vests are for! Poor dd wink

Speaking of fruit growing on trees I believed about the spaghetti for years......... blush

harverina Mon 01-Jul-13 00:14:35

We had the discussion about pineapples a few weeks ago on a girls holiday abroad.

They said they had never seen a pineapple tree.

I said " they don't grow on trees, they grow close to the ground," whereby they all laughed at me and said don't be silly.

I saw it on QI and so had to google it for them and show them the pictures of pineapple fields. They were shock

Many years ago I worked part time next door to a pie shop. On the days I was working I'd nip in and have the same thing all the time.

Years later long after I'd quit the job and gone back to Uni my DH came home with one of my favourite pies. As I sat enjoying it I said to him "I've never understood why its called that you know, there is no lettuce in it" DH then pointed out through his tears of laughter it was a Vegetable LATTICE.

Can't believe I spent all those years asking for a Veg Lettuce. blush

IwishIwasmoreorganised Mon 01-Jul-13 12:09:16

Well, I had no idea about pineapples, the blackberry logo or the baby vest necks (have 2 ds's so should have known that!).

Time to start watching QI I think blush

RiffyWammal Mon 01-Jul-13 14:49:45

I don't think that's what the envelope neck is designed for. It's just to make it easier to get their heads through, surely? And if mine ever got poo on their vests, I would just kind of roll the vest up and open the envelope neck wide as I pulled it over and the poo wouldn't go on their heads anyway.

Apileofballyhoo Mon 01-Jul-13 14:56:16

What Riffy said. Also Liam is the Irish for William, not a separate name in its own right, afaik.

squoosh Mon 01-Jul-13 15:19:05

No it is a separate name in it's own right.

I think Liam and William were originally both versions of Wilhelm.

Well it wouldn't look like beef. Beef would be much too dark. It would probably look like pork though. IIRC the cannibal word for human is 'Long Pig'.
Not sure why knowing that people are made of meat puts you off eating pig. Surely it should shove you towards eating people? ;)

I asked my husband about where pineapples grow last night and probed him a bit. He came out with this description of a pineapple tree:
"they're really tall trees like palm trees and are normally near the sea. They grow in bunches".

So I asked him how people get the pineapples down: "They normally fall down when ripe, but locals climb up to chop down non ripe ones to sell".

So then I asked him again if the trees are really tall: "yes they're palm trees. pineapple palm trees"

That's when I burst out laughing and showed him a picture of a pineapple growing from the ground and told him pineapples don't grow on trees. He was dumbfounded! Duh!
