We are moving and my friend's next door neighbour is a removals man, she is good friends with him and she asked him if he could do my move for me for a good price.
He came round yesterday and seemed like a nice bloke, he gave me a quote which I thought to be very expensive and after chatting to my dh we decided to use someone else. There is a website that he found where removal companies bid for the work and we found someone on there. The price we got it for was 1/2 what this other bloke quoted me.

I sent him a text this morning saying thank you for your time but we have found someone else that is cheaper.
He text back saying "good luck with cheap"

yeah that's professional...

Am I being unreasonable to be pissed off by this?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie Wed 26-Jun-13 09:15:38

Yes,....get on with your packing and move on.

Yes, YABabitU, you decided not to use him, now just move on. and let us know how you get on wink

pictish Wed 26-Jun-13 09:36:22

No yanbu - he's a chippy fucker.
Ignore it and get on with your move though.

gallifrey Wed 26-Jun-13 09:36:26

But surely it's my right to use whoever I want without being insulted!

mrsjay Wed 26-Jun-13 09:37:35

yanbu to be pissed off now get packing I guess it was because it was a friend referral blah blah he felt he could be cheeky

sagfold Wed 26-Jun-13 09:38:59

He didn't insult you. Maybe he didn't give the most professional response ever but it wasn't that bad.

MagicBaguette Wed 26-Jun-13 09:39:01

He didn't insult you. YABU

Yes, he has been a bit unprofessional by sending that text but move on, it ain't no biggie. Of course you are entitled to use whomever you want and you are. I probably would have got another quote just to see whose was unrealistic...cheapest isn't always better and sometimes if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Forget about it now and good luck with the move smile

loveliesbleeding1 Wed 26-Jun-13 09:39:31

Well you obv won't be recommending him to anyone anytime soon! dont have any further contact , good luck with the move x

He hasn't insulted you, he has replied in an unprofessional manner.

If he had of replied "ok, you cheapskate fucker!" that would be insulting you.

EeyoreIsh Wed 26-Jun-13 09:41:35

Well....I went for cheap removals and ended up having several items broken and they didn't have their own insurance so I lost out. Probably not to the tune of the £1k I saved, but I'm not sure I'd go cheap next time I moved.

But, it was still unprofessional of this chap to respond like that.

sagfold Wed 26-Jun-13 09:47:23

We are in a recession, times are hard, maybe he's under pressure, maybe he really needed the work and is very disappointed not to get it. Maybe his football team lost last night, maybe he had a row with his wife. Whatever, his response is more to do with him and his own shit than with you. Move on and move house.

DoJo Wed 26-Jun-13 11:42:03

YABU - he didn't insult you, and although he was rude there's no need to let it get to you. Just move on. (Do you see what I did there - priceless!).

gallifrey Wed 26-Jun-13 12:48:52

thank you I do feel better now, it's worse I guess because he's a friend of a friend.

Viviennemary Wed 26-Jun-13 12:54:32

I'd be thinking maybe he has got a point. Cheap isn't always better value for money.

TalkativeJim Wed 26-Jun-13 12:56:27

Your reply:

'Sorry, I don't quite understand your reply - that sounds a very unprofessional response, so I'm sure that I've just read it wrong! Thanks again for the quote'

Feminine Wed 26-Jun-13 13:01:25

I think...that he sounded disappointed.

silly of him, as its unlikely that you will use him or suggest him to others!

but...did you tell him you have found someone cheaper? in that case it would have been a chirpier response!

good luck with your move smile

mumofthemonsters808 Wed 26-Jun-13 13:06:37

I think he was implying that there are removal firms who provide a quality service (providing boxes, providing guarantees and insurance, taking items to designated rooms, providing assistance putting furniture back together again etc, etc) naturally they charge for this service. There are also basic removal firms who literally load and unload boxes they charge a lot less for this basic service.

Personally I was that impressed with the service Brittania Removals provided I would never use anyone else. Yes we paid through the nose but nothing was too much trouble for the blokes and everything went very smoothly.

I hope everything goes well, forget about him.

ImNotBloody14 Wed 26-Jun-13 13:08:50

I think i must be odd. A response like that wouldnt piss me off at all. I'd probably laugh at it and think " what an idiot- doesnt he know i'll tell potential customers about his attitude" but pissed off? No. Why would i be?

FruminousBandersnatch Wed 26-Jun-13 13:20:08

Just reply 'thanks smile'.

I would be a bit annoyed too but wouldn't dwell on it.

Bejeena Wed 26-Jun-13 13:22:36

I wouldn't always go for cheap either, if there was someone who I knew I could trust that would do the job I'd always go for them.

I have read some absolute horror stories about removal companies so make sure you read the small print. I have heard of many people who had their stuff packed up, van got to new house and the removal men said that because it was more stuff than anticipated they had to pay more and until they paid their stuff would not be unloaded - what do you do when all your stuff is in the van?

MrsLyman Wed 26-Jun-13 13:23:32

YABU to be very pissed off, but moving is stressful and I can see how innocous things like this build up, but it really isn't a big deal. Time to move on.

MrsLyman Wed 26-Jun-13 13:24:20

innocuous even.

Reply - 'Thanks Dear'

ArthurSixpence Wed 26-Jun-13 13:27:57

You're pissed off about that?

I guess that's because you're worried that the people you are using are too cheap, and he's made those worries worse?

Look at it from his perspective - imagine you're self-employed and your entire income is dependant on selling a service - you're very good at it, but you know some people are cheaper, and generally the cheaper ones are not so good.

Do you not think you'd be a bit put out if someone told you they'd employed someone cheaper?

sparkle12mar08 Wed 26-Jun-13 13:28:35

Reply "Very professional. Not" and then block his number. Also tell your friend how disappointed in his attitude you were, and that she might want to reconsider promoting his business for him...

diddl Wed 26-Jun-13 13:32:18

Do they both include the same things?

Eg packing & wrapping everything?

Is it a bigger firm-sometimes they are cheaper.

Perhaps he was confident that you'd use him.

Silly reply, but I think as others have said, no biggee in the long run.

Hope it all goes OK.

parttimer79 Wed 26-Jun-13 13:35:33

I guess expensive doesn't always guarantee a professional attitude...
This would piss me off but not excessively, shrug and move on.

SazzleDazzle01 Wed 26-Jun-13 13:38:32

Why let it bother you? He isn't a direct friend. He didn't offend you personally and simply implied that going for the cheaper option doesn't always provide the best service. If he doesn't appreciate your money situation then that's his choice.

Shitsinger Wed 26-Jun-13 13:42:43

I would have said you have found someone who gave you a more competitive quote would he be able to match it ?
if not -Thank you for your time and move on.

gallifrey Wed 26-Jun-13 17:11:43

My dh found a site where you put in your requirements and then companies bid for the work at lower and lower prices, he was having a great time as in real life he would never barter over the price like that!
In the end he found someone who has had 197 good reviews from customers and it was less than half the price of our so called "mate"

The woman that recommended him is more of a frenemy than a friend so I expect they are sitting there now slagging me off!

SomethingProfound Wed 26-Jun-13 17:21:52

Get over it it's such a non issue! His text was a little off but no reason to get so worked up!

gallifrey Wed 26-Jun-13 17:40:08

I'm not worked up now, but I was earlier then by the time I'd posted on here I was fine, I just had to tell someone!!
