to ask for your HONEST opinions, should i get the side of my head shaved?

MoodyDidIt Tue 25-Jun-13 14:54:58

i have a short choppy hairstyle and am going for a trim tomorrow and am thinking of asking my hairdresser to shave the side of my head, can't really describe it but its a bit like rihanna here

am 33, if it looks shit, it will grow back right? its only hair

i will also put a pic of myself on here, how my hair looks now - for a VERY short time, so people can judge advise

again, please be honest, i promise i won't be offended grin

AnyFucker Tue 25-Jun-13 14:57:06

can't see your pic

Ragwort Tue 25-Jun-13 14:58:16

Tee2072 Tue 25-Jun-13 14:58:25

You have no pictures.

I've been getting my head shaved for about 20 years. I'm 44.

If you want it shaved, get it shaved.

Madlizzy Tue 25-Jun-13 14:58:33

My honest opinion is that if you like it and want it done, then do it. grin

MerryOnMerlot Tue 25-Jun-13 14:58:53

I wouldn't, but it's not my hair grin.

Sorry, not helpful I know, but I think you're just a bit long in the tooth for that sort of cut. And before anyone shoots me down in flames I'm a LOT older and had some pretty mental hair do's in my youth!

Do Not Do This.

1. The trend has passed

2. Unless you are a regular user of hair extensions or weave you will have an 'inbetween' period, that means it won't be shaved but it won't be the same length as you own hair, you will have tufts. If you don't have long hair that you can flip over, it will look even worse.

3. I have seen this soooo often with DCs friends and even some of my friends, it was very popular here when Rihanna and Cassie did it, a few (maybe 3?) years ago. Most of them have said to me that they wish they hadn't done it as it has been a right pain, looses its novelty factor very quickly, and often that they had ended up having to use weave or extensions to cover it.

LemonPeculiarJones Tue 25-Jun-13 15:04:57

Can't see any pics on your profile.

But do it if you fancy it, it's just hair, it'll grow back. I don't think age matters. It can look gorgeous if it suits your face shape.

FeckOffCup Tue 25-Jun-13 15:05:51

I wouldn't have that hair style personally as I think it would be a right faff and look good for all of 5 minutes before needing redone by a stylist but if you want to try it then go for it, it's only hair and will grow back and if you are fed up of it in a few months you can wear hats over winter while it grows out.

I used to have a Salt and Pepa in the 80s. Many happy memories of being stopped in the street and complimented. That was a few decades ago, of course. Growing it out WAS a pain.

What is your hair like?

Teeb Tue 25-Jun-13 15:07:57

Don't do it, it already looks dated and a bit daft to be honest. Unless you are the kind of person who would have experimented with hair and maybe are a bit alternative, then you'll just look like a rather behind trend follower.

mrssprout Tue 25-Jun-13 15:08:00

My only word of warning would be that although it does grow back when you have one side shaved it takes forever to get it evened up with the rest if you want to change the style. I had one side of mine shaved (surgery not choice) & the rest turned into a large dreadlock in hospital so was cut short. It has been 12 months & I am still trying to grow out the shaved bit to a length that will let me do something with it other than look like a bad toupe grin
On the other hand you are a lot younger & undoubtedly more stylish than me so if you want to do it go for it .

WilsonFrickett Tue 25-Jun-13 15:08:14

Och do it, I got an undercut like that for my 40th birthday and it looked great. It's just hair. (Although I would concur that growing it was a total faff and took ages...)

FrenchRuby Tue 25-Jun-13 15:09:28

Don't do it! I had my hair like that last year and I liked it for about 2 says then it starts to grow out and it looks awful.

FrenchRuby Tue 25-Jun-13 15:10:13

2 days even haha. I had mine dyed into a leopard print as well, looked awesome short, awful growing out.

Elquota Tue 25-Jun-13 15:10:32

Personally I don't think it looks good, but it's your hair and your choice of course!

ExasperatedSigh Tue 25-Jun-13 15:10:35

Do it! I have an undercut on one side of my shoulder length hair, it makes a nice change from just everyday long.

It's only hair. And if you hate it, it's just a good excuse to try something else new grin Do it!

NatashaBee Tue 25-Jun-13 15:11:58

I think it's a cool look, but if your hair is blonde people will just assume you're trying to look like Kerry Katona grin I can't see your pic so don't know what colour your hair is.

SybilRamkin Tue 25-Jun-13 15:12:23

Nooooooo, don't do it! It looks bizarre rather than quirky beyond the age of about 21 unless you look as amazing as (and are as famous as!) Rihanna, and as others have said, it takes flipping AGES to grow out.

IfYouCanMoveItItsNotBroken Tue 25-Jun-13 15:14:58

My hair has been undercut since 2008 as it is so thick I suffered headaches from the weight of it even at shoulder length. Most people ddon't even notice it, as its purely practical and not an obvious fashion statement type hairstyle. I would say it needs regularly shaved or gets really itchy. I dread ever growing it out, as it looks really shit when I leave it too long, I will have to eventually cut all my (arse length) hair off if I want ridof it so it grows evenly. Luckily if iI wear my hair down it looks like a normal head of hair. If you have short hair anyway and can tolerate having an awful hairstyle for 3 months while growing it out then go for it, I think it looks awesome on short hair! Sorry for typing, toddler on lap.

garlicnutty Tue 25-Jun-13 15:15:15

Meh. Hair grows and, for when you really can't stand it, wigs are only about £25 these days.

I think people divide into two distinct camps where hair's concerned: the Hair Is Your Pride and must always be top-notch bunch, and the It's Only Hair sector. I'm in the latter. The only important thing is to know which side you're on, OP, and make your choice based on that!

Rihanna looks great in that picture.

livinginwonderland Tue 25-Jun-13 15:15:50

Please don't! It doesn't really look good on anyone and you have to go through an awful "growing out" stage to get rid of it, or keep the hairstyle and I'm not sure which is worse.

I have an irrational hatred towards this hairstyle.

TeWiSavesTheDay Tue 25-Jun-13 15:16:48

If it looks shit it will grow back.

But I wouldn't, 'cos I think it looks awful. Sorry.

TSSDNCOP Tue 25-Jun-13 15:17:55

Depends on the shape of your head.

If you've got a little head and gamine face like Rihanna, go for it.

If you've got a head like Charlie Brown, maybe not.

garlicnutty Tue 25-Jun-13 15:18:29

Re: all dire growing-out warnings; how different is this from an inverted bob, which looks incredibly stylish thanks to the scalp-length layers underneath?

Looks like you could answer that one, IYCMIINB!

mummymeister Tue 25-Jun-13 15:20:34

teenager experimenting with hairstyles - hmm sort of OK. 33 yr old not a good look sorry. it will look awful growing out as well. I stand accused of being ageist that's fine. I just think there are certain things that look crap on older people and this is one of them (boot strap tee shirts with no bra on on a 60+ yr old is another of them!)

MushiMushi Tue 25-Jun-13 15:23:12

I did something like that. I had a side parting so could have the shaved bit exposed when I wanted, and if I wanted to look a bit more respectable I moved the parting to the middle and it was totally concealed. Got a bit bored of it after about a year so now I just have my parting in the middle. It's still growing out but it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

So I say go for it, but in such a way that you're able to hide it if you want.

Don't do it.

It's dated and naff and, to be honest, I'd struggle to take a 33 year old woman who modelled themself on Rihanna (in ANY aspect of their life) seriously.

MoodyDidIt Tue 25-Jun-13 15:31:05

oh just realised my pics didnt upload angry

should be on there now

although suspect won't alter general consensus grin

garlicnutty Tue 25-Jun-13 15:32:01

I stand accused of being ageist that's fine.

Just make a mental note never to bump into me grin

Age: 58
Hair: Lilac & dusty pink
Next month will be: Blue & grey

<offers smelling salts>

QueenoftheHolly Tue 25-Jun-13 15:32:52

garlicnutty Tue 25-Jun-13 15:34:10

OP, I know you on Facebook! smile smile smile

You are well gamine and stylish enough to carry off a highly-defined style like this!

Trust me, other readers, she's gorgeous!

No, your hair is gorgeous as it is. I'd kill for shiny hair like yours envy

Babbadie Tue 25-Jun-13 15:38:25

Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it!

Your hair is the only accessory you carry around with you ever single day. Make a statement with it.

I think it looks fantastic and I'm getting mine done like it in a few weeks grin

MoodyDidIt Tue 25-Jun-13 15:39:04

oooh who are you on FB garlic!! give me a clue as i have a few mners on there

and thank you lol x

thanks for all the opinions so far, and thank you for the honesty. if it helps i am a bit alternative. ie rocky type

Oh god no. That style is dated anyway and certainly not ok on anyone over 21. It's embarrassing when older people (I mean older than very young, I'm 33 too) copy trends that start with teens/early twenties. Not cool.

You won't look alternative you will look try hard.

Pinkflipflop Tue 25-Jun-13 15:42:18

Sorry but it will look hideous.

Doubtfuldaphne Tue 25-Jun-13 15:42:32

I saw your photos so they're definitely there!
I'd say the trend has gone now - but if you like it still then why not give it a go! You only live once and all that!

TheCatIsUpTheDuff Tue 25-Jun-13 15:45:31

I was working with a lady last week who had a similar style. She's mid-30s and looked ultra-professional in her suit but the hair added a stylish, quirky twist. It'd look shit on me, but really suited her. If you think you can carry it off, go for it, it'll grow back if you hate it.

diddl Tue 25-Jun-13 15:48:52

I think that it looks ridiculous.

OP-you have a lovely hairstyle.

The only thing that would annoy me would be the long floppy bit.

Shorter all over?

AnyFucker Tue 25-Jun-13 15:54:01

Have seen your pic now. You have the small, pretty features that could carry it off

I say give it a go, if the rest of your demeanour/style/makeup suits something unusual

I know it wouldn't suit me as I am rather boring and conventional (jeans, t-shirt and converse girl)

and yes, it will re grow very quickly which helps if you don't take to it, but will add time to the upkeep of course

I had a look at your pics, I think it would suit you. But I also think you should do something different with the floppy bit.

MoodyDidIt Tue 25-Jun-13 16:08:36

yeah i have been thinking that bullet. i have been thinking of bleaching it blonde but as my hair is dyed red am worried it would go a terrible colour grin

and thank you anyfucker thats very kind smile

garlicnutty Tue 25-Jun-13 16:13:14

When you bleach out red, it goes apricot (I knew this experience would come in useful one day!) It can go canary yellow, too, but that can be fixed with a toner.

A painted / dip-dyed effect on your longer side might look good ...

MerryOnMerlot Tue 25-Jun-13 16:17:03

Have seen the pics now Moody but it's still a no from me.

Samu2 Tue 25-Jun-13 16:19:43

I don't like the style. I have one side of my hair shorter than the other and love it, but do not like the shaved look.

However, I think you have the face to pull it off if you want to. It will be a nightmare to grow back but if you like it go for it!

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee Tue 25-Jun-13 16:23:46

I was trying to say what Bullet said, without offending grin

I don't know it needs another colour, just a slightly different shape.

<you'd laugh if you could see the state of my hair and I'm handing out hair advice grin>

I agree that you have the 'face' for it (pixie & pretty) but the cut is very dated now. Slightly less so if you don't colour it, but have it a single, natural, colour.

Nerfmother Tue 25-Jun-13 16:25:58

I have an undercut on one side and a parting so I can have either longer hair over it or have it showing. I love mine but I think tight undercut not shaved.

MoodyDidIt Tue 25-Jun-13 16:58:20

that sounds nice nerfmother

yeah agree its quite dated now, i remember seeing alice dellall with it a few years ago, probably like 5 years ago tbh, and thinking shock

i should have done it then!!

still tempted though, if i do i might put pics up so you can all laugh at me grin

chillynose Tue 25-Jun-13 17:32:37

Go for it if thats what u want u can keep shaving it to stop it growing and looking silly

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper Tue 25-Jun-13 17:36:03

I think you should do it! I was all ready to say no but you have the perfect face for it. I'm jealous! I love miley Cyrus' hair atm but can't do it because I have a fat mans face (I'm like my brothers twin sad )

SugarPasteGreyhound Tue 25-Jun-13 18:06:24

Do it, do it, do it!

I am very tempted by it but I have a round face and it would look shit on me.

If you like the style then go for it. I don't subscribe to whether it's fashionable or not; who gives a fuck how old you are - go for it!

carolthesecretary Tue 25-Jun-13 18:14:06

No, women with shaved heads make me think of the 80s...

Nerfmother Tue 25-Jun-13 18:17:50

Thing is, hair grows. Decent hairdresser can do wonders at the I between stage. It will look good! Don't dye it unless that fits your look. I can add you to my mumsnet mates if you want to look at my picture?

MoodyDidIt Tue 25-Jun-13 18:31:13

yes add me nerf so i can be nosey

EatingAllTheCrumpets Tue 25-Jun-13 18:38:43

I've had mine like it for about 2 years now, I've had it long and mid-length on the long bits and have the shaved bit shaved on a number 1. Currently the rest of my hair is pink/purple shoulder length however I've had it brown and blonde so more "normal" colours!

I was worried about having it done as I'm overweight, not an 18 year old trendy yoof and have a normal office job. But I bit the bullet and shaved it off!

I love it and since I've had it so long it just feels normal now!

It's only hair at the end of the day, it will grow back!!

MorrisZapp Tue 25-Jun-13 18:43:41

Naw man. Dinny dae it.

Do it, I think it'll really suit you. Even if you decide you don't like it, it'll grow back. It's better to regret something you did than something you didn't do.

cassgate Tue 25-Jun-13 18:51:25

Not sure if this link will work properly but this is what my hair is like. Its not shaved just very scissor short on one side and the back with a long fringe. I have just had my fringe cut so its about nose level as it was getting on my nerves but maybe an option for you. My hair is also rihanna red. I am 42 and have always had very short hair its nothing to do with age its whether it suits you of not.

BeKindToYourKnees Tue 25-Jun-13 18:54:11

Absolutely do it!! My DD has exactly the same hair and features as you and has had the side shaved, it look stunning. Definitely not passé.

VerySmallSqueak Tue 25-Jun-13 19:07:10

Yep.Do it.

It'll really suit you.You have a lovely well defined profile which I think will really work.

You can always do the upkeep yourself (or even the shaving off bit) if you have some clippers.

It is only hair, and it's really not that bad to grow back.

Sugar I think it actually suits a round face - especially if you go two sided.

Mehrida Tue 25-Jun-13 19:39:47

You like it and if you have the confidence to do it then you'll suit it.

Worst comes to the worst, you don't like it and have a few weeks of it being 'in between' while it grows back.

Don't do it and you'll always be wondering...

Shutupanddrive Tue 25-Jun-13 19:44:27

Yes do it smile
Have you decided yet?

sweettooth99 Tue 25-Jun-13 19:52:32

I think it would look great

GobblersKnob Tue 25-Jun-13 19:52:54

Ah do it, you'll look great, who gives a toss what anyone else thinks it's your hair.

VitoCorleone Tue 25-Jun-13 19:56:45

I think you'd suit it

DramaAlpaca Tue 25-Jun-13 19:58:28

I think it will really suit you. If you like it, do it. And make sure you post another photo!

cocolepew Tue 25-Jun-13 20:10:35

I've seen your pictures before, was it when you were getting your haircut before? I still think you nerd to chop into your floppy bit or shorten it. But that's only my opinion grin.

It would look fine shaved, it grows back in no time. I accidentally shaved part of my head completely bald (don't ask) and within two weeks it was fine to stop wearing scarves wrapped around my head grin

Seenitall Tue 25-Jun-13 20:24:24

Do it, I think it will look fab - if you do, please share new pics

Onesleeptillwembley Tue 25-Jun-13 20:29:39

Don't. The trend has gone and it wasn't a particularly attractive one anyway. If you have the right bone structure, a fully shaved head can look fantastic.

raffegiraffe Tue 25-Jun-13 20:38:09

Hi OP,
I say do it!
I have a similar hair cut but cut very short on the short side rather than shaved.
It looks great and I have had so many compliments.
My long side is to my jaw's easy to style and I don't ever have the situation that used to happen with my bob, where one side of my hair dried ok and the other stuck out!

MoodyDidIt Wed 26-Jun-13 10:17:02

oh that sounds nice raffegiraffe, i think i have seen similar cuts

and yes cocolepew that was me too blush and since that pic was taken i have gone a little bit shorter, but dont have any very recent pics that show it properly

thanks again for all the advice even the harsher comments thanks

got my hair appt this afternoon and will also chat to my hairdresser, i have been going to her for years and she is very honest and lovely as well as being a brilliant stylist so i think if she says go for it am gonna just do it! (and vice versa)

squeakytoy Wed 26-Jun-13 11:18:27

I did it last year (I am 43) and I loved the style... but growing it out is an absolute nightmare..

I had both sides done, but the top was long enough so that I could look "sensible" with a bob style if it was down.

I would think you will suit it, but it is a bit "last year" now as well..

WildlingPrincess Wed 26-Jun-13 11:22:20

I did. Looked awesome but was a pain in the arse to grow back.

Fenton Wed 26-Jun-13 11:24:36

Yes, do it, and more colour too - you can totally pull it off, you are very pretty.

I'd say DO IT!!! But then I'm massively biased grin

I'm nearly 30 and have a massive side/undercut (pics on profile - including new and current hair). I can't quite do it now as it's too big but, but when it was smaller (and even then it was still bigger than the one in your OP) I could easily part if on the other side to hide it when it was growing out. I have about two-thirds of my head shaved now I think. It's definitely more than half anyway.

If you like it - invest in some clippers and maintain it yourself. I had mine cut by a hairdresser but my DH keeps it short for me (it's a number one at the minute)

Some people think it's dated now, but so are mo-hawks etc and they still look awesome. I don't think I look stupid or try-hard though I'm sure there are people who will disagree...but luckily I don't cut my hair to please them.

LifeofPo Wed 26-Jun-13 11:43:33

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

LittleNoona Wed 26-Jun-13 16:50:12

Seen your pic on FB op - you look fab!!

It totally suits you as you have a petite and very pretty face and no WAY look 33!

MoodyDidIt Wed 26-Jun-13 17:35:12

WOW scarletlady i LOVE your hair

and you are absolutely beautiful envy

i did it, will put some pics on in a sec if anyone wants to see grin

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper Wed 26-Jun-13 18:56:57

Aaaah it looks ace! So jealous right now! <grumbles> envy

AnyFucker Wed 26-Jun-13 18:59:31

Not my style but it suits you. Are you happy with it ?

AnyFucker Wed 26-Jun-13 19:01:06

MoodyDidIt Wed 26-Jun-13 19:03:50

McBalls Wed 26-Jun-13 19:04:30

IneedAyoniNickname Wed 26-Jun-13 19:09:10

ScarletLady, you are also gorgeous :envy

LittleNoona Wed 26-Jun-13 19:14:03

Moody you have lovely skin, what products do you use?

raffegiraffe Wed 26-Jun-13 22:07:54

Yay!! We'll done! It looks ace.

Samu2 Wed 26-Jun-13 22:15:22

OP you look awesome!!!!

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper Wed 26-Jun-13 22:24:02

Oooh I want to pinch scarlet lady and Moody's hair. So envy right now!

Dawndonna Wed 26-Jun-13 22:25:14

I think it looks great, you're really pretty and carry it well.
I don't think the moment has passed, my ds (18) and his gf (17) both have one side of their heads shaved. He has green streaks in the long bit, she has pink and purple.

Fenton Wed 26-Jun-13 22:37:43

I love it !

At 40<cough> I fear I am too jowly now, - i've left it too late sad

I did have very short sides and curiously dark hair, age 14 at grammar school - so I guess I had my time.

OP it looks fucking awesome. Shaved ladies rule grin

Thanks for all the comments

WilsonFrickett Wed 26-Jun-13 22:55:44

Love it op. acers.

HerrenaHarridan Wed 26-Jun-13 23:03:20

Some people will not vote for any style that is not traditional.

If you want it go for it, if you hate it crop the lot off.
If you want to grow it out wait till winter as wear a hat

Although tbh when growing my hair out from shaved I have always coasted the in betweens with a little bit if leave in conditioner to make it lay down OR sit up and it's looked fan.

I fucking love really short hair on women and I think it would look hot on you wink

HerrenaHarridan Wed 26-Jun-13 23:05:08

So behind the times, should have posts yesterday instead of watching.

It does look hot!

I love the feel if shaved hair smile

DramaAlpaca Wed 26-Jun-13 23:08:47

Suits you OP!

ToysRLuv Wed 26-Jun-13 23:11:48

Go for it, OP. I've got it, and really liked it. Since Kerry Katona cut hers, I'm a bit less in love with it. I am a bit alternative anyway and definitely in the "it's only hair" camp, so suits me. Thinking now of taking the clippers to my whole head like I did around 9 years ago. Hair is such a bother. All the washing an styling - never looks quite right. Or does for a bit, then a a strong gust of wind or drizzle fucks it up instantly.

ToysRLuv Wed 26-Jun-13 23:12:34

Oh, you did it already! Serves me right to not read the whole thread! Well done.

ToysRLuv Wed 26-Jun-13 23:16:07

That's very close to the style I have. You should buy yourself a pair of (cheapish) clippers and get someone to do your shaved bit every week or two, so it doesn't get tufty, but also, so that you don't need to pay the hairdresser to do it while the long side is till fine. My DH does it, and he is no born hairdresser, but he does a good job.

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper Wed 26-Jun-13 23:25:43

Aww I want to do it now! Is it too risky if I have a fat manly face though? sad

WhiteBirdBlueSky Wed 26-Jun-13 23:32:32

Yes. Don't do it if you have a fat manly face. Unless you want to. In which case, do it.

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper Wed 26-Jun-13 23:41:45

I just don't want to look even more like my brother <cries> but I want it!

cocolepew Wed 26-Jun-13 23:49:30

It's looks fabulous!! Agree with getting clippers, I used to do my own hair with them when I had it short.

MoodyDidIt Thu 27-Jun-13 10:00:29

awwww am blush at all the lovely comments. thank you x

i think you should just go for it amyfarrah - its only hair. and it might look amazing. and if not who cares, at least you have tried it

for the person who asked what i put on my skin i do OCM and use coconut oil. i dont agree i have great skin though, more like a shit phone camera that doesnt show it properly grin

diddl Thu 27-Jun-13 10:38:36

I think it would look great if it was all like that tbh.

melika Thu 27-Jun-13 10:58:07

Dillydollydaydream Thu 27-Jun-13 11:06:01

I love your hairstyle!

ToysRLuv Thu 27-Jun-13 11:27:45

I agree with diddl about the whole head, as well.

It looks great!
On a different note, I'm very jealous of your eyebrows...

Have you been having fun stroking your head OP? I love stroking my shaved bits grin

And I mean on my head....minds out of the gutter ladies!

MoodyDidIt Thu 27-Jun-13 15:27:53

ha yes i have scarlett grin it feels so lovely and fuzzy! although that bit of my head has felt cold today

and bullet - my eyebrows are not even real, they are tattoo'ed on - they are AMAZING

shock that's awesome!

everlong Thu 27-Jun-13 17:53:56

Love it. You have a lovely look smile

I love the feel of the air on my head. Because I'm currently wearing dreads, it's so cool to the back of my neck etc all clear of hair smile

MoodyDidIt Thu 27-Jun-13 21:17:52

aww thanks everlong smile

i must take the pics down now before i get outed!!!
