This is sort of about Jeremy Forrest but could a judge make an order that means they can't marry.

eurozammo Sun 23-Jun-13 17:04:07

Only for bigamy, as far as I know.

superbagpuss Sun 23-Jun-13 17:04:50

there are three reasons you cannot legally get married

1 you are married already
2 you are too young
3 you are related

thats all

gordyslovesheep Sun 23-Jun-13 17:05:40

or for the purpose of 'immigration'

once she is an adult she can marry who she pleases - sadly

fedupofnamechanging Sun 23-Jun-13 17:06:15

Maybe if someone is deemed not to be sane or in full possession of all their faculties?

McNewPants2013 Sun 23-Jun-13 17:06:17

So if his wife divorced him, then it is possible for them to marry in 2 years.

noisytoys Sun 23-Jun-13 17:06:35

I've always wanted to be at a wedding where someone dramatically declared a reason why the couple couldn't get married grin

There are forced marriage protection orders but obviously they only apply where one or both individuals haven't actually consented.

RiotsNotDiets Sun 23-Jun-13 17:06:57

She can't marry him til she's 18 anyway, before that she'd need her parents' consent and they hate the prick

hiddenhome Sun 23-Jun-13 17:08:01

Even if they do, he'll be trading her in once she hits her 20s hmm

ImTooHecsyForYourParty Sun 23-Jun-13 17:09:19

they can be stopped if one or both lacks capacity to understand what they are doing. If one or both are already married. If it is believed that it is a sham marriage, etc.

Mind if I ask why you're asking? [nosy]

hiddenhome Sun 23-Jun-13 17:09:30

Oh, and he won't have anything to offer her as he'll probably never work again and her family will probably disown her too.

What a bright future sad

Portofino Sun 23-Jun-13 17:10:00

He won't actually WANT to marry her when he gets out of course. I would lay money on it.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty Sun 23-Jun-13 17:10:30

oh, sorry, my question wasn't clear. I know you said it was 'sort of' about the case, but I was being nosy wondering if there was a rl reason that it relates to.

Here's where you tell me to piss off with my nebbyness. grin

ImTooHecsyForYourParty Sun 23-Jun-13 17:10:56

ARGH. RL to you, I mean.

Good god.

BridgetBidet Sun 23-Jun-13 17:11:06

She won't be able to do it until she's 18 unless she has her parents permission. I assume that she would have to get it from both parents and her mother is unlikely to give it.

But if she is 18 and she decides this is what she wants to do when she is an adult I don't think it's right she should be stopped. Once she's an adult she's free to do what she likes.

hiddenhome Sun 23-Jun-13 17:11:18

No, she'll be knocking on by the time he gets out. Positively old.

TheRealFellatio Sun 23-Jun-13 17:11:45

A teacher at my senior school married one of the female pupils as soon as she hit 16 and then left school. He seemed to me to be about 40 back then, but I was only 11 so he could have been younger - everyone looked old to me. grin

McNewPants2013 Sun 23-Jun-13 17:12:11

It has just got me thinking.

I'd put money on it never happening too.

hiddenhome Sun 23-Jun-13 17:13:58

According to MIL's DM, he's pursued other teens. She isn't the first. He's predatory, just like Savile sad

Portofino Sun 23-Jun-13 17:14:44

I would think now the trial is over he will have no further use for the poor girl. sad and it's not like they will be able to write to,each other/visit either. I hope she has some good real life support / counselling.

hiddenhome Sun 23-Jun-13 17:15:45

Yes, I hope she moves on with her life and that his dick rots and he ends up sleeping in gutters with rats pissing on him.

TimeofChange Sun 23-Jun-13 17:16:09

I know a 12 year old girl who was in a relationship with a bloke who must have been 35 - 40.
They are now married and have children.

SS were involved, but the bloke & girl just said she was a lodger and had a seperate bedroom (she moved in with him when she was 14).
His wife obviously left so did the son.

All very wierd.

Portofino Sun 23-Jun-13 17:16:21

Everyone still seems be buying in to the "tragic romance" of this case, rather than this being a predatory paedophile who committed a crime.

McNewPants2013 Sun 23-Jun-13 17:16:32

I said sort of because in RL if anyone suspect there is domestic abuse or there is a SN which meant that they didnt know what a marriage is could the wedding be stopped.

TidyDancer Sun 23-Jun-13 17:17:40

She is being allowed to visit and her father supports the marriage idea. It's all very strange for various reasons.

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 23-Jun-13 17:18:22

I wouldn't be surprised if they did marry.

Happened with a girl a few years older than me at school and the music teacher. He got caught, served a custodial sentence, they married when he got out. Have two kids now. She was 14 when it started (there was no evidence but she was). He slept with two of her friends, though only one of them came forward and confirmed this after it all came out when they were 18. He'd been told to leave the school he'd been a prior to mine because his unhealthy interest in the young girls had been noticed. That school allowed him to leave and act on it rather than deal with him themselves. Vile on so many levels.

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 23-Jun-13 17:19:15

*18 but still pupils at the school.

Portofino Sun 23-Jun-13 17:20:56

She allowed to visit him? shock would not SS be involved?

edam Sun 23-Jun-13 17:21:00

I know SS have stepped in to stop weddings where they believe one party lacks capacity (via a court order).

Doubt anything can be done for this girl once she's 18 though, but as everyone says, he'll probably have lost interest by then. Poor kid.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty Sun 23-Jun-13 17:22:08

Yes, a wedding can be stopped if it is shown that one or both lack capacity.

MikeLitoris Sun 23-Jun-13 17:24:41

Alis iirc you are in S Wales? Similar story with my music teacher. Were his initials DJ?

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 23-Jun-13 17:25:35

Yes they were

McNewPants2013 Sun 23-Jun-13 17:27:18

It's a shame nothing can be done to stop the wedding.

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 23-Jun-13 17:27:30

Small world isn't it Mike!

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 23-Jun-13 17:28:27

McNew hopefully in a couple of years this girl will be beyond not interested. I find it utterly shocking her father supports the idea. Not a normal parental attitude.

MikeLitoris Sun 23-Jun-13 17:36:00

! I never liked him. Always came across as a odd ball.

There was rumours of some inappropriate phone calls with a girl in my year. He used to sing songs.to jer in class.

Nothing was done about though. Very glad he was caught eventually.

littlewhitebag Sun 23-Jun-13 17:36:09

In Scotland they can get married when she is 16. No parental consent required. He will, however be in prison which may be a bit of a stumbling block.
