... to expect DDs to wear ACTUAL pants?

Maybe I am just seriously out of touch, but all three of my DDs (18, 15 and 12) wear leggings like they are pants!!!

Now I think leggings are lovely when worn under a long top or a dress, but DDs (and the majority of girls I see on the street) seem to think they are a substitute for actual trousers. They wear them with normal length tops and jackets, which only go to their waists, leaving their bottoms and legs totally exposed in these leggings. Luckily DDs' leggings are thick enough that you can't see their underwear, but there have been soooo many times when I've been tempted to grab a teenage girl in the street, frogmarch her into a shop and supervise her buying a pair of jeans!

Whenever I question my DDs about the 'leggings as pants' craze, I get the whole 'Oh mum, you don't understand', reply!

So, do your DDs do the same? And AIBU to expect girls to wear ACTUAL pants?!

DribbleWiper Mon 06-May-13 15:36:09

You mean as trousers? I initially thought they wore them as underwear!

Agree this seems to be increasingly common, but they'll go out of fashion again soon enough and your DDs will be wearing giant, baggy culottes instead!

My DD does wear leggings alone, but then she's 3 months, so can get away with it! grin

phantomnamechanger Mon 06-May-13 15:36:14

are you American OP - only I thought this was going to be about knickers, not trousers!

leggings as trousers is nothing new, I thought I was going to learn of a new trend for no knickers under leggings (please tell me this is not so, aside from anything else it would be uncomfortable, no?)

dd isnt allowed past the front door in leggings and short top combo. She has a lovely figure but has sadly inherited my backside, and no way am I having my dd sporting the camels hoof look. They look fine with a dress or long vest top tho. Also makes sure she buys a size up so they don't look too thin.

Annunziata Mon 06-May-13 15:39:25

As long as there are knickers underneath I really don't care grin

DD2 is wearing her black disco pants today. She really appreciated DH and I singing 'You're the One that I Want' to her <evil>

I cannot tell you how NU you are being. I don't care if you have an arse like Pippa Middletom shagged Brad Pitt, cover it up. I hate it.

StabInTheDark Mon 06-May-13 15:40:02

Oh dear- didn't mean to cause confusion!! I'm not American, just northern, and we refer to trousers as pants blush

Ugh, fortunately so far I haven't come across no knickers under leggings, touch wood!!

DribbleWiper ahh I long for the day baggy culottes replace this skin tight leggings phase!

jacks365 Mon 06-May-13 15:43:45

I've not come across no knickers under leggings either but i have seen some interesting patterns on knickers due to some leggings being so see through. My dds would only wear leggings under longer tops as they've seen a few sights too.

BenjaminButton172 Mon 06-May-13 15:52:42

My 8 yr old will wear leggings with a top that goes to her waist. She looks beautiful in them. It is not like her bum is hanging out.

StabInTheDark Mon 06-May-13 16:01:27

Benjamin Cute on little girls but my eldest DD is 18!! A lot of teens aren't straight up and down, but curvy, and these skin tight leggings show everything!!

MrsTerryPratchett What does NU mean? blush

sunlightonthegrass Mon 06-May-13 16:04:21

In the North of England 'pants' are regularly referred to as a substitute for trousers. I wear leggings, sometimes with a tunic, sometimes with just a top and long cardi. To my knowledge, no one has ever averted their eyes in horror but they are free to do so if they wish smile

NU = Not Unreasonable. And I agree smile

MrsMook Mon 06-May-13 16:08:55

Isn't that a 90s revival?
On the right person it's better than the oversized t-shirt look.

As long as it's not replaced by shell suits...

Hahaha internal I love it!! I am printing it off as I speak!

StabInTheDark Mon 06-May-13 16:17:04

sunlight I love it when my DDs wear leggings and tunics, it's when their bottoms are out for the world to see that I start to get irritated/confused!

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 16:18:04

oht hey are young leave them alone they will be on forums like this in years to come saying god did i really wear them and they will get pages of replies of yes but so did I grin I saw loads of girls yesterday when out and about with leggings and short tops and they didn't have camel toe no t that I was staring but they seemed to have leggings adjusted to fit, 1 girl had a short at front long at back top on I thought genuis

MrsDeVere Mon 06-May-13 16:26:09

The very worse ones are the skin tone ones!
Oh my Lord.

People look neekid in them shock

They are truly a crime against fashion and should be banned.

SoniaGluck Mon 06-May-13 16:27:21

mrsjay I was just about to post something similar.

I used to think that if I could get hold of all my mother's photos of me in the late 70s / early 80s I would destroy them. But I didn't she wouldn't let me and now I'm glad they are still around.

If for no other reason that it gave my DDs hours of mirth when they saw what their mother used to wear. It also made me more tolerant of what they wore when I remembered how daft I used to look. blush grin

sunlightonthegrass Mon 06-May-13 16:27:55

I sometimes wear leggings like that, as I said - I wear them because they are comfy! I don't think my bum is any more 'out' than it would be if I was wearing skinny jeans or a tight skirt but as I said, I don't really care if it offends people!

2rebecca Mon 06-May-13 16:27:55

If you're going to wear your leggings without a top that covers your bum then surely they look better without knickers to avoid a vpl?
I think they look daft worn like that, they're really just glorified footless tights.

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 16:28:22

god I was walking to the bus stop a few weeks ago and with my failing aged eyesight I thought a girl had no trousers on she had those nude leggings on I was trying not to stare but I really couldn't work out if she had forgot to put them on or not grin

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 16:29:17

MRSDV yes they should be banned

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 16:30:21

sonia dd posted a picture of me on facebook with big hair and big shoulder pads all her friends did the same of their 80s mums blush

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 16:31:21

when leggings were out the first time I am sure I wore them with a short teeshirt the second time they were out I wore them with long tops havnt worn them th e 3rd time

MrsDeVere Mon 06-May-13 16:32:10

I see it a lot round here.

I live in a very diverse area. They make those leggings in every skin tone imaginable.

They ALL look horrible and weird.

I love legging. I have loads. I only wear them with frocks or mini skirts.
Tight are impractical for work as are dresses without something underneath.

Leggings are thick tights. They are not thin trousers.

Startail Mon 06-May-13 16:32:47

We all wore leggings as pants/trousers in the 1980's it wasn't a problem.

The problem is the totally shit quality of the leggings, DD2 has thicker footless tights.

ALittleBitOfMagic Mon 06-May-13 16:32:55

YABU .

I'm at the other side .

Legging are NOT TIGHTS gringrin

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 16:33:26

oh so they make all colour nude tones not a good look hmm I have 1 pair i wear for work but they are more jeggings that leggings

MrsDeVere Mon 06-May-13 16:34:16

In the 80s they made leggings with high waists from really thick lycra.
They were worn with beaded bra tops.

It was different in the 80s....

SoniaGluck Mon 06-May-13 16:34:43

mrsjay At least I have been spared that. So far.

They just wet themselves laughing. sad

sunlightonthegrass Mon 06-May-13 16:34:59

Mine are all right. I'm sitting here in leggings, vest top and longish cardi (it ends around my bum - boyfriend cardi according to New Look grin) Just been and checked and you can't see my knickers and while I clearly have a bottom, it's no more obvious than when I wear jeans.

I wouldn't wear them to work but they are great for slobbing round the house in. My other 'bottoms' of choice are tracksuit bottoms; leggings are a posh day for me !

FarBetterNow Mon 06-May-13 16:36:07

Rebecca: If you leave your knickers off everyone can see EVERYTHING.

2rebecca Mon 06-May-13 16:38:59

Surely if your leggings are that thin then if you wear knickers people can see your knickers through them?

StabInTheDark Mon 06-May-13 16:42:51

Yes, I quite often see the patterns of knickers!! Preferable to seeing everything else I suppose...

And oh God, don't even get me started on nude coloured leggings!! An absolute crime, they really are!

It's sad because I really love leggings on the whole!

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 16:48:30

Honestly, OP, just laugh and pick your battles.

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 16:52:24

I had purple hair and i WAS gorgeous grin

Annunziata Mon 06-May-13 16:55:29

Really mrsj? grin Brilliant!

MrsDeVere Mon 06-May-13 16:55:47

I had black and orange deadlocks that came down to my knees.
I was about 6 stone.

I was just walking hair...

NoelHeadbands Mon 06-May-13 16:58:32

My daughter wears black and white stripy leggings with a cropped jumper

<cries>

Annunziata Mon 06-May-13 16:59:14

Your knees?! Wow.

I had Madonna-80s hair (blush) but I think MrsD might win!

bugsyburge Mon 06-May-13 17:00:05

OP are you from manchester? I use 'pants' to refer to trousers too.... causes much confusion with non mancunians!!!

back to the question though.... drives me mad when people do this- where I live there is also a craze of large ladies wearing leggings as pants....not a good look envy

mrsjay Mon 06-May-13 17:01:30

yep grin i also had red never blue though I think mrsdv was the coolest 80s teen

threesypeesy Mon 06-May-13 17:03:44

Im 28 and wear leggings as trousers but mine are very thick ones so no underwear on show. I love my leggings and think my bum looks great in them, no different to wearing my super skinnys imo

Oldraver Mon 06-May-13 17:07:59

Sunny park yesterday, young woman with see through leggings and white with what looked like a multi coloured flag patterned pants on, I didnt want to get any closer to see. She did keep trying to pull down her t-shirt to cover her bum but it pinged up whenever she bent over.

Another woman, thicker leggings and she did have big pants the same colour underneath..but her top only just met the top of the leggings. I was mesmerized by her bum, it looked like two ballons filled with water

toffeelolly Mon 06-May-13 17:13:36

Hate legging's that are so thin you can see your knicker's, so cheap looking.

StabInTheDark Mon 06-May-13 17:14:51

bugsy no, I'm even further North haha, I'm from Cumbria! grin

ahh NoelHeadbands I can sympathise. sad DD2 has an awful pair of USA flag ones. I am considering accidentally losing/burning them!!

CockyFox Mon 06-May-13 17:31:49

YABU.

Proper leggings are definitely trousers not tights. As was mentioned like in the 80s.

Leggings are not tights and for gods sake if you need to wear them under your shorts then it isn't warm enough for shorts and you look bloody ridiculous even if you are 18 6 foot and a size 6.

StabInTheDark Mon 06-May-13 17:59:22

Yes but my issue is that proper leggings are so rare to come by!! These cheap, transparent things that girls wear are the ones you find in every shop!

Also... I quite like it when my DDs wear leggings and shorts blush

WakeyCakey Mon 06-May-13 18:06:56

My DSD (12) wears leggings all the time, in fact she no longer has any jeans. She finds them uncomfortable and unflattering.
She looks fab!!
The only problem I have is that I am short with VERY short legs! And she has legs that just keep on going and with the leggings they look even longer. envy
dont be so hard on them, every decade has its own fashion that cannot be understood past the teenage years

loofet Mon 06-May-13 18:10:17

YADNBU. Argh! I hate this 'trend' too. It just looks like they forgot their skirt. The worst thing is (aside from it looking ridiculous and being very unflattering regardless of your figure!) is the fact you can see their underwear or lack of in some cases! Eurgh. Hope it dies out soon...

Fraggle3112 Mon 06-May-13 19:00:21

I wore leggings and a longish but not so long it covered my bum top and a cardi all the time when I was pregnant! No tops were long enough dilue to the bump and leggings were the only comfortable thing that fit! Maternity clothes never fit properly as u stayed pretty much the same shape but with a huggggeee bump! I probably looked a right state but I really couldn't care less! Haha!

Jestrin Mon 06-May-13 19:08:16

I think the thicker material leggings are fine with a tunic top or a skirt. The leggings made of thinner material just look like tights and look awful, as if they've forgotten to wear a skirt!

PiratePanda Mon 06-May-13 19:13:35

When leggings were round the first time (late 80s) we definitely wore massive t-shirts over them. It was the era of the massive t-shirt. I NEVER saw leggings with short shirts then; only now <shudder><bleaches eyes>

PearlyWhites Mon 06-May-13 19:13:48

We call trousers pants am not American, as for leggings they are pants are they not?

BenjaminButton172 Mon 06-May-13 22:39:18

Can i take back what i said.

Some people suit leggings while others dont. Saw a girl today wearing leggings and a short tshirt. She bent over and her bum was on full show. I dont need to see that when i am eating.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Mon 06-May-13 23:30:54

The only 'leggings' I wear with a short top are M+S jeggings, but I thought they were skinny jeans when I bought them they have a proper button and fly, and are very trouser like. Any others are worn with a bum-covering top or tunic.

Oh no, I tell a lie. I do have one pair that I sometimes wear with a t-shirt or leotard, but they're for dancing. I think if I went out in them, you'd probably realise it wasn't as a fashion statement... they're lycra and stirruped grin

ThatVikRinA22 Mon 06-May-13 23:36:58

im northern and i hate the term pants for trousers. im from York. i had never heard trousers called "pants" before i moved a few miles away. i still fucking hate it. pants are underwear. end of !

dd wears leggings as trousers. she is 5ft 7, weiggs 7st 10 and is a size 8. she can get away with them as trousers so why the hell not....i do wear leggings but i wear them with tunic tops and boots. im shorter and fatter.

OxfordBags Mon 06-May-13 23:42:39

I've seen plenty of girls wearing TIGHTS as leggings, with the whole crop top thing going on. You can tell they are tights, because they wear them with ballet pumps and can see the toes continuing, and on some, the tights-esque stitching around the crotch area. It's... nasty.

(All that detail sounds like I have been watching them from my window with night vision goggles and feverishly noting each wearer in a sinister journal, but I honestly haven't.)

Each to own. I had big hair in the 80s and looked daft.

chattychattyboomba Mon 06-May-13 23:56:18

To anyone who wears leggings as trousers... Did you know that they are often see through in the sun? Unless you buy some really heavy duty ones ( like wetsuit fabric). I have seen more g- bangers this weekend than i care to recall... Also bare in mind they are unforgiving on any lumps and bumps you might rather not have the world see. I agree OP.

chattychattyboomba Mon 06-May-13 23:57:52

Sorry X post

Morloth Tue 07-May-13 00:06:21

Parachute pants are next aren't they?

MoominmammasHandbag Tue 07-May-13 00:12:33

DD1 aged 17 wears leggings as pants. She is 17, goes to the gym about 4 times a week and has a Beyonce type bum.
I feel like I should be shadowing her around college and shooting all the horrid youths who drool over her.
She is utterly oblivious and thinks she's a bit fat.

rainbowslollipops Tue 07-May-13 07:27:31

I agree leggings should be worn as tights. You wouldn't wear tights with a t-shirt would you? Leggings are a similar material. I've seen many girls wearing them with shirts. Dd (6) noticed one on the way to the shops last week and shouted "mum! I can see her white knickers!!" I wasn't shameful. I felt sorry for her. You really could see everything.

ellajayne Tue 07-May-13 07:50:41

Insane. There are many twenty something's who do this too but my rule is if the top doesn't cover the crotch and bum, trousers it is.

BlackholesAndRevelations Tue 07-May-13 07:55:35

I agree, it looks hideous, even on skinny teens. I was out for the day yesterday and saw an enormous woman (not teenaged) wearing leggings and a tight vest top which didn't quite meet the top of the leggings. Each to their own and all that, but......... I do think her skinny friend (who looked lovely in a summer dress) might have gently said something?
