to ask the MNers who say "methinks" to desist?

(127 Posts)
MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:06:07

It makes you sound prattish. Just saying. grin

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:06:27

And please don't offer me any grips either.

I agree.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:09:06

Phew. One person agrees with me.

But if others want to flame me, go ahead. I know I have the moral high ground.

Although sometimes it can be used in a funny way and also I'm not going to go on about other people's writing (as my English is bad enough!)

LadyBeagleEyes Fri 03-May-13 18:09:34

Methinks you need to get a grip grin

DearPrudence Fri 03-May-13 18:10:15

And LadyBeagleEyes has it grin

ShatnersBassoon Fri 03-May-13 18:10:29

Is prattish a proper word? Methinks not.

Tee2072 Fri 03-May-13 18:10:39

Methinks you are being unreasonable.

Someone had to say it...

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:13:14

biscuit biscuit biscuit biscuit biscuit biscuit biscuit s

for all of you.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:14:01

"sometimes it can be used in a funny way"

Sorry, haven't seen any examples of that. Certainly not on this thread.

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

starfishmummy Fri 03-May-13 18:15:32

Forsooth, YABU.

navada Fri 03-May-13 18:16:17

I agree.
Very annoying.

NotInMyDay Fri 03-May-13 18:17:09

Methinks yourself needs to get a grip. People having an opinion make me stabby and my teeth itch.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:18:15

It's a bit Alan Partridge.

Methinks posters who type desist, protest too much grin

DearPrudence Fri 03-May-13 18:19:40

Only cream faced loons say methinks.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:19:49

Don't get me started on the estate agent/call centre/Apprentice candidates' use of "myself" NotIn.

"Who was responsible for this mess?"
"It was myself, Lord Sugar".

No. No. No. "It was ME, Lord Sugar".

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:20:11

Well not actually me.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:21:42

<blows raspberry at KatieS>
(You know I love you really).

Cailinsalach Fri 03-May-13 18:24:40

I get a pain in my rectum from people stating certain words or phrases are irritating.

The pain is far worse than the one I get from people using irritating words or phrases.

The vocabulary police are all fascists. Or tools of a totalitarian dictatorship.

Salbertina Fri 03-May-13 18:24:47

Not as annoying as all those antenatal threads titled "brooking no argument.." It may have been witty the first time, just.

HintofBream Fri 03-May-13 18:24:56

Methinks starting a thread with ' So,' is also pretty annoying.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:26:26

You can all keep your "stabby"s and itchy teeth too.

I've never even seen me thinks but me thinks i will use it now!

ChewingOnLifesGristle Fri 03-May-13 18:28:50

Oh agree with all of this. And adding 'Twas..'.

Nobody says Twas.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:29:41

What about putting "light-hearted" in the thread title? It's somewhat annoying, but at least it (hopefully) avoids accusations of fascism.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:30:19

I keep seeing it recently SPs (please don't start).

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:30:48

Unless it's the night before Christmas Chewing.

Methinks twas amazeballs.

^ best sentence ever? grin

zoobaby Fri 03-May-13 18:33:04

So youthinks people should desist? Unreasonable methinks grin

ChewingOnLifesGristle Fri 03-May-13 18:33:39

grin I'll make an allowance for Christmas. That's one Twas a year.

ShatnersBassoon Fri 03-May-13 18:34:53

The only time I've been genuinely annoyed by a turn of phrase, or what was actually an unforgivable splicing of two of my least favourites, was when a call centre person said "Bear with myself please". My eyes rolled so much I saw my cerebellum.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:36:13

Bloody hell Shatners.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:36:54

I saw "doggy dog world" on a thread earlier. That made me grin.

ShatnersBassoon Fri 03-May-13 18:38:21

I love doggy dog world! I wonder what they thought it meant grin

RooneyMara Fri 03-May-13 18:40:36

Oh it is horrible. I am so glad you said this though I'll have to hide the thread as I can't bear to see the word.

It reminds me of being about 16 and thinking we were cool

I think we stopped saying it by the time we were 17

any other Shakespearean weirdness you can have back as well.

RooneyMara Fri 03-May-13 18:41:41

OH and can people please stop saying the thing about being sick in their mouth, or a little bit of wee and all that. It makes me want to be sick, actually.

thanking you

Tee2072 Fri 03-May-13 18:42:24

Invoking Tee's Rules of Mumsnet, Number 2,000, Section 15a, Subsection QQ, SP must leave MN immediately and never return for using the word "amazeballs".

Thank you

::marks spreadsheet::

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:43:59

I completely agree Rooney. And, no, some of you are not actually spitting on your keyboards.

SoniaGluck Fri 03-May-13 18:44:45

Nobody says Twas.

I do. I find it frightfully amusing. But then, I also say "frightfully". Sometimes I even say methinks in actual RL conversations.

People quite often give me a hmm look.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:45:42

Are you actually Alan Partridge, Sonia?

ChewingOnLifesGristle Fri 03-May-13 18:46:18

No-one ever gives a Hey Nonny Nonny though. I think it's high time it made a reappearance (whatever it meansconfused)

I'm not a big fan of indeedy.

But methinks is okak, just an extension of meths, which is all good, fir some people, non?

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:47:47

And as for this business of finishing a sentence in "non". What's that all about?

MrsBungle Fri 03-May-13 18:48:36

Yanbu. I think it's a really twee word. That and t'was. I do like the word twattish.

BIWI Fri 03-May-13 18:49:07

Personally I think we should resort to this a little more often thou frothy flap mouthed harpy.

ChewingOnLifesGristle Fri 03-May-13 18:49:23

Oh god 'non' is tooth grindingly annoying.

FoundAChopinLizt Fri 03-May-13 18:49:29

So youthinks tis mispeaking to say methinks?

Infactly, you are indubidobedoobidly correctidge.

SoniaGluck Fri 03-May-13 18:50:15

Are you actually Alan Partridge, Sonia?

I don't think so. <checks>

No, definitely not. grin

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:51:30

Oh, I like that link, BIWI.

Forsooth, verily, thou art a ruttish elf-skinned maggot-pie, methinks.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 18:52:32

Only joking.

ChewingOnLifesGristle Fri 03-May-13 18:52:53

That list is brilliantgrin. I can't wait for dh to get home to try some of those out.

Back of the net!
(Channels Alan Partridge)
(Remembers that DH says this and a little part of my soul dies, every time)

BIWI Fri 03-May-13 18:59:03

D'you reckon MNHQ would recognise any of those as Personal Attacks?! wink

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 19:00:01

Are you going to report me then BIWI?

pointythings Fri 03-May-13 19:03:35

Methinks I would like to point out to all you fair ladies (and any gents who mought be among you) that there is only one letter's difference between 'twas' and 'twat'.

<Exit, pursued by bear>

BIWI Fri 03-May-13 19:04:12

Oooh no!

pointythings Fri 03-May-13 19:04:24

And MNHQ are a most erudite assembly of wise women who will arrive at their judgement in the fullness of time. Verily and forsooth.

BIWI Fri 03-May-13 19:05:34

... thou villainous tardy-gaited strumpet

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 19:08:02

And thou art a lumpish unchin-snouted foot-licker.

BIWI Fri 03-May-13 19:11:38

It's done

Tis funny, cos actually, have only started to do this kinda thing since I started MNing a hundred years ago
Things I say in type (email or online) now, I would NEVER have done before MN, innit.

Tee shock you cant just kick me out! That's like totes uncool

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 19:14:39

Olivia, she's calling me names.

MadBusLady Fri 03-May-13 19:15:29

Why do I always post things like that seconds before someone from HQ appears?

<looks at shoes>

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 19:21:51

You've killed it MadBusLady.

MadBusLady Fri 03-May-13 19:24:09

I'll go away and think about what I've done.

Salbertina Fri 03-May-13 19:25:25

Get thee to the naughty step

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 03-May-13 19:28:01

I'll go away and think about what I've done.

Well, quite grin

francesdrake Fri 03-May-13 19:39:46

The 't'is'-ers can do one as well. This isn't Blackadder.

MadBusLady Fri 03-May-13 19:41:51

And will be again, Salbertina, I should think.

Salbertina Fri 03-May-13 19:47:03

Why?! Am stamping foot now.. Just when we'd all been playing so nicely..

dogsandcats Fri 03-May-13 19:48:19

op, you are the first MNettter I have seen write "methinks", methinks obviously. smile

MadBusLady Fri 03-May-13 19:49:02

No, it's fair enough. It could have been a jokey fuck off but TBH it wasn't really, threads like this get on my tits. I'm not sure I do say "methinks", but I hate random judgey rules people make up in a "jokey" way, it reminds me of bullying at school

Salbertina Fri 03-May-13 19:50:22

Fair enough. This is in AIBU though

BIWI Fri 03-May-13 19:51:23

Trigger-happy MNHQ ...

MadBusLady Fri 03-May-13 19:51:24

It seems I am too U even for AIBU. grin

Tee2072 Fri 03-May-13 19:59:06

SP I was going to let you come back. And then you said 'totes'.

::marks spreadsheet again::

BIWI Fri 03-May-13 19:59:50

totes amazeballs, surely?

LaQueen Fri 03-May-13 20:01:27

Are we okay with forsooth and foreasmuch hmm

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:03:31

grin. And there was me thinking you were ironically telling me to fuck off (or whatever it was).

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Fri 03-May-13 20:03:35

Missed the boat as usual.
I really hate "hence".
But the other day I saw "hubsybobs" which I thought was so pukeworthy I actually liked it.

LaQueen Fri 03-May-13 20:04:10

I'm not averse to the occasional Prithee either...but, then I can waffle on for hours in pure Chaucer-ese, if so required...

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:05:21

No we're not ok with forsooth. My autocorrect wants it to read for Sooty. confused

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Fri 03-May-13 20:05:28

Love that list BIWI.

LadyBeagleEyes Fri 03-May-13 20:06:16

Just shock at hubsybobs.
That is classic, I wish I had one as I would use it all the time grin

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:06:56

For the record, I'm not really being judgey MadBus - just trying to stir a little controversy.

FlightyAphrodite Fri 03-May-13 20:07:38

I don't get the brooking no argument thing. They keep popping up on active convos and annoying me because I don't understand!

MadBusLady Fri 03-May-13 20:08:12

I probably just need to have a wine Mardy.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Fri 03-May-13 20:08:22

Fab isn't it LBE?

LaQueen Fri 03-May-13 20:08:58

Thou shouldst be right vexed, with poxy autocorrect Mardy - but dost though not spare nary a sweet utterance, for those of us with a kind fondness for more gentle speech...?

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:09:57

Just hide the conception topic Flighty. Unless, you're -er- trying of course.

pointythings Fri 03-May-13 20:12:53

MadBusLady Permit me to soothe thy fevered brow with a libation wine thus.

cecinestpasunepipe Fri 03-May-13 20:12:56

And why do some MNers post on t'internet? What's wrong with the internet?

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:13:12

This is how AIBU should be:

Fuck off?
Ha ha.
No I meant it.
Oh well, what the fuck. Let's have wine.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:15:46

LaQueen I have no problem with sweet utterances in their rightful place. Like in text that was composed a few centuries ago.

Can you imagine Mners in the next century trying to sound twee by filling their posts with strange utterances like "totes amazeballs".

FlightyAphrodite Fri 03-May-13 20:16:18

Nope not trying, have never hidden a topic before but I think I might have to!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Fri 03-May-13 20:16:19

Love that LaQ do some more wine

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:16:41

Totally agree cecinestpas.

And I love your user name.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Fri 03-May-13 20:17:12

I meant do some more of it, and have some wine

starfishmummy Fri 03-May-13 20:17:19

Gadzooks. I think a flagon of wine is exactly what I need.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:18:37

Hiding topics is imperative to my MNing experience. Unless some bugger pops one in the wrong topic, I am no longer bothered by pushchairs, breastfeeding/FF or camping.

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:19:57

I'm on the [gin]. I think that's a bit more Victorian.

LaQueen Fri 03-May-13 20:21:23

Bewithced Verily, shall it pleaseth me to delight thine ears with more fulsome outpourings of decourous words and fanciful utterings... wink

HollyBerryBush Fri 03-May-13 20:22:48

me'thinks twats who gotten all over the place should be shot at dawn reprimanded and the other twats who say "oooh it's middle English" should join them realise language moves on. Innit?.

Maryz Fri 03-May-13 20:25:11

'tisn't t'internet, 'tis t'interweb anyways.

I'm saving my righteous wrath for those who:

1) Put threads in the wrong topics so they appear on my Active even though I have hidden the topic, thus necessitating the hiding of said thread

2) Make said threads so active they appear in Most Active so they appear back on my screen

Tee2072 Fri 03-May-13 20:27:22

Is gin Victorian?

::puts BIWI on list for 'totes amazeballs'::

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 03-May-13 20:31:28

Evening all
I prithee to pay heed to our guidelines
Thanking you kindly

pointythings Fri 03-May-13 20:34:02

Halloo her name to the reverberate hills - Olivia!

MardyBra Fri 03-May-13 20:35:41

Oh FFS. I've just seen "twixt" on a thread now. Some of you are just tormenting me.

Tee2072 Fri 03-May-13 20:42:09

A fair fine evening to you, Lady Olivia. I hope you are faring well.

[sucketh upeth emoticoneth]

pointythings Fri 03-May-13 20:46:34

Lady Mardy, prithee partake of this posset brew, 'twill calm thy ire.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Fri 03-May-13 20:56:11

Ooooh swoon, thanks LaQ smile wine

Gin was Victorian Mother's Ruin n'est ce pas (sorry)

mrsjay Fri 03-May-13 20:58:17

methinks desist is a pratty word grin

Salbertina Fri 03-May-13 20:59:32

Even back to Georgian times, think Hogarth

LaQueen Fri 03-May-13 21:02:48

A goblet of hippocras twill soothest thou furrowed brow Mardy - and bestow an air of plentious merriment, this eventide...

MardyBra Sat 04-May-13 00:07:40

'Twasn't just you cheryl. (Did you see what i did there?) It's a trend. Enjoy your naughty juice.

(I love your user name btw).

LittleMissLucy Sat 04-May-13 01:56:48

I find the use of "desist" on a talk website a bit overly precious, unless its quoting a legal situation, which in these circumstances, it isn't.
