..to think Game of Thrones is Coronation Street with tits and pelts?

I am only on episode six of series 1 but I have to say I am finding it interminably dull. Am I missing something here? The acting is shit; there's the ubiquitous (and puffy-faced) Sean Bean spouting forth in his Sheffield timbre; the fat bloke from The Syndicate sweating and bellowing all over the place; and I'm sure I've spotted Eric pollard in there somewhere, too. There are lots of whores, bathing and doggy-style sex (not to mention some rather unnecessary schlurping during the fellatio scenes) but very little else to capture the imagination.

What the actual fuck is going on? Where is it going? How come no-one's heard of the missionary position? What's beyond The Wall? Why is there a woman breastfeeding a twelve year-old? <shudders> I'm so frigging bored of it all <yawn> I'm only continuing to watch in the hope that Tyrone and Fiz turn up and get down to some bumming in Ye Olde Rovers Return.

Someone help me to see the light?

It does get better.

It got better for me when a few key things happened, but I agree with you, the first season was dire.

CajaDeLaMemoria Sun 28-Apr-13 11:37:21

Hmm..

Series one was good! Series two is more violent, so if you prefer that, it might be worth hanging on?

You've only got four episodes left of series one, so it's only four hours, but it may not be worth it if you don't like it. It seems to be something people either love or hate. Never heard it get compared to corrie, though!

Euphemia Sun 28-Apr-13 11:38:16

I gave up after twenty minutes - I didn't care what might happen to make it better!

mrsjay Sun 28-Apr-13 11:41:28

I hated it I dont get it at all I normally like stuff like that but I think it is pretentious twaddle I watched 2 episodes

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 11:45:29

I can't believe I've hung on this long, euphemia. I've read so much praise for it on mumsnet and there were little frissons of excitement in anticipation of series 3 so, naturally, I was thrilled when we got SKY last week. I'm gutted that it's turned out to be a pile of steaming horse shit sad

Caja, my Corrie reference is down to all t'Northern accents. Seriously, if I close my eyes it's like being at my sewing machine at Underworld grin

YANBU, it's utter shite.

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 11:55:28

grin

catgirl1976 Sun 28-Apr-13 12:04:22

I love it

I'm northern so I don't mind the accent

Winter is Coming

<runs away>

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 12:08:08

Ah. I have just seen all the other threads discussing GoT. Sorry to be a bore blush

Trill Sun 28-Apr-13 12:18:27

YABVU

The stories and the writing are very different to Coronation Street (or at least to how it was the last time I saw it - has Corrie got a shitload better in recent years?).

mrsjay Sun 28-Apr-13 12:19:42

my friends love it I am confused when they comment about how good it is, DD bought her boyfriend the leather bound book for his christmas he clapped like a demented seal when he opened it grin

saintmerryweather Sun 28-Apr-13 12:20:54

Yanbu its a pile of pretentious wank and the books are no better!

mrsjay Sun 28-Apr-13 12:22:07

DD tried to get into the books she is going to the exhibition with her boyfriend I dont think she really likes it either

Trill Sun 28-Apr-13 12:23:23

YANBU to not like it or for it to not be to your taste.

YABU to say it is like Coronation Street, unless by that you mean contains people with Northern accents.

mrsjay Sun 28-Apr-13 12:27:34

TBH i have never see doggy style in corrie is there a corrie late night somewhere that I have missed grin

catgirl1976 Sun 28-Apr-13 12:39:06

It's had a few dragons over the years though mrsjay grin

WrenNatsworthy Sun 28-Apr-13 12:42:23

Coronation Street is a story about people.
Game of Thrones is also a story about people.

The way the people fuck one another over in Game of Thrones is a bit more bloody.

I much prefer Game of Thrones. grin

I don't get why it's being called pretentious though? Most odd.

Me neither Wren, it's not trying to pretend to be anything or copy any age from history, it's came from someone's imagination confused

mamapants Sun 28-Apr-13 12:47:57

What a ridiculous comparison.

You are free not to enjoy it but your critique could do with some work ;-)

OrangeFootedScrubfowl Sun 28-Apr-13 12:57:53

People kept telling me it'd get better but I didn't have it in me to persevere. I thought it was rubbish.

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 12:59:54

Trill, I think you'll find I said this further upthread: ..my Corrie reference is down to all t'Northern accents. Seriously, if I close my eyes it's like being at my sewing machine at Underworld

Mama, go and buy yourself a sense of humour <rolls eyes>

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 13:02:36

To be fair, I enjoyed the horse having its head cut off and whatsername eating a horse's heart. Crumbs. You'd think I was equinaphobic grin

Trill Sun 28-Apr-13 13:08:45

So when Christopher Eccleston was the Doctor, was Doctor Who "Corrie with more aliens"?

(lots of planets have a North)

stopgap Sun 28-Apr-13 13:12:56

Is it all the "John Snooooo" pronunciation? grin

I must admit, the thought never crossed my mind, but I always said Downton Abbey was Corrie with tails and pinnies.

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 13:19:11

If you're waiting for me to apologise for the Corrie reference.. thy'll be waitin' a fookin' long time.

Trill Sun 28-Apr-13 13:25:25

I'm just finding it amusing that the only thing you can think of whenever you hear a northern accent is "this is like Corrie".

catgirl1976 Sun 28-Apr-13 13:34:15

Out of interest OP, do you think the North is 'like Corrie'?

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 13:42:08

Yes, the whole of the North is like Corrie. I know 'cos I live 'ere.

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 13:43:05

..I also believe the whole of the South is like Eastenders.

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 13:43:31

...and no doubt every woman in Wales is called Stacey and every bloke, Gavin.

Morloth Sun 28-Apr-13 13:44:17

I went with Days of Our Lives with swords, but yes - it is pretty much the same. wink

catgirl1976 Sun 28-Apr-13 13:46:01

Ahh..it's just my Southern MIL thought it was smile

On her first visit here she asked where all the mills and factorys were confused

out back with my whippets obvs

HobKnob Sun 28-Apr-13 13:51:06

OP, I like you.

EmpressMaud Sun 28-Apr-13 13:54:21

I haven't seen CS for decades, but it was rather pantomimic if I recall correctly. Game of Thrones is trashy, soft porn fantasy. The books grow progressively worse after the first one.

lol Jon Snooooo

mamapants Sun 28-Apr-13 14:06:13

Jewcy+ where does one go to buy a sense of humour?

And for what its worth I've never enjoyed the missionary position so find a bit of the much more enjoyable doggy much more representative.

Trill Sun 28-Apr-13 14:38:01

And all of the countryside is like Emmerdale smile

Apart from the bits that are like The Archers.

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 14:40:45

Hobknob, what a super nice thing to say smile

Mama, you can buy a sense of humour at any good Northern joke shops. You know, where they sell plastic turds and that..

Speaking of turds, have you tried the wheelbarrow position, mama?

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 14:42:26

Trill, I can't watch Emmerdale and it's all down to Chas's fringe. It fucks me right off, it does <irrational>

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 14:44:40

Catgirl, I hackchewally live about 300 yards from an owd fabric mill <troo fact>

catgirl1976 Sun 28-Apr-13 14:47:17

Can I send my MIL for a tour when she next visits smile

I would pay good money for someone to keep her away for hours entertain her grin

Jewcy Sun 28-Apr-13 14:53:55

I would be honoured to show royalty a mumsnet MIL around here, catgirl. Let me know when she's coming and I'll defrost a pie grin

catgirl1976 Sun 28-Apr-13 15:52:19

grin you have No idea what you'd be letting yourself in for

I would send lots of wine you'll need it smile
