To be pissed off at the abuse of the exclamation mark?

Why end every sodding sentence in an exclamation mark instead of a full stop? It hurts my eyes and makes posts look silly.

The exclamation mark is a punctuation mark usually used after an interjection or exclamation to indicate strong feelings or high volume (shouting), and often marks the end of a sentence. Example: “Watch out!”

You don't bloody well need it when talking about boring shit. I keep seeing this kind of thing.

Hi! I went to the shops today! I bought a gorgeous dress!

Totally, totally wrong.

Even worse is the need to use !!!!!!!!! Why? What's wrong with one !?

Hi!!!! I went to the shops!!!!!! I bought a dress!!!! Someone was mean to me in the changing room as I sounded just so damned excited all the time!!!!!!!

WorraLiberty Mon 22-Apr-13 12:39:08

What?????????????????????????????????????????????

That's outrageous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes!!!!! YABU!!!!

Snoopingforsoup Mon 22-Apr-13 12:40:34

Text speak is worse, much worse. Be pleased people can still be bothered with the !

Gerrof Mon 22-Apr-13 12:41:18

It's because they're fick.

It's not as annoying as multiple question marks????? Especially on the end of something that isn't a question?????

podgymumma Mon 22-Apr-13 12:43:50

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
grin
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YABU!!!! What's wrong with using punctuation in an informal setting to indicate emotion???

Get a grip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

grin

NumTumDeDum Mon 22-Apr-13 12:45:46

What about the following usage:

What?!

WRT to multiple question marks for some reason it always makes me think of the sentence in an Australian question intonation. I could possibly phrase that better but I've had two hours sleep. So there.

nenevomito Mon 22-Apr-13 13:04:34

I'm all for using ! to express emotion, but when it's because someone seems incapable of using a full stop, it looks silly.

I saw something amazing today! OK

I saw something amazing today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <cries>

I did something not very interesting today. < - - - See the full stop works just fine.

nenevomito Mon 22-Apr-13 13:06:42

I wouldn't say they're necessarily thick. Maybe just a bit over excited?

CuntAlors Mon 22-Apr-13 13:13:29

I've had to hide people from my FB feed for this.

"Just walked the dogs in the rain!!!!!!!! Lol"

Why? Just why?

I know someone on facebook who uses question marks INSTEAD of exclamation marks. Like this;

'Had a lovely day with the kids????? They're my world?????? xxxx'

GAH.

Pobblewhohasnotoes Mon 22-Apr-13 13:17:05

THAT'S JUST TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! AND TO MAKE MY POINT IM GOING TO SHOUT!!!!!!! ALOT????????

Samu2 Mon 22-Apr-13 13:17:52

I abuse them often!!!!

And the worse thing is, I do actually use four of them often blush

Samu2 Mon 22-Apr-13 13:19:19

I am not fick, I just like them!!

Used two to tone it down a bit ;)

WhitesandsofLuskentyre Mon 22-Apr-13 13:46:16

I translate/revise from a couple of European languages that sprinkle them all over the shop. I inwardly weep when I'm revising a text where the translator has decided it's a good idea to adopt the same usage in English. (See also multiple question marks.)

FuckThisShit Mon 22-Apr-13 14:00:15

The exclamation and question marks in their masses do rather annoy me in an irrational way, so YADNBU.

I would also like to add ect that seems to be littered all over the place. It's ETC FFS, as in an abbreviation for ETCetera. I have seen it on so many threads over the past weekend.

Which leads me nicely on to past and passed.

I walked PAST the tree. Or I passed by the tree. NOT I walked passed the fucking tree.

Get it right please.

Startail Mon 22-Apr-13 14:06:17

I like ?!? or !?!

Since you can't alway write WTF! or what planet are they on?

MyDarlingClementine Mon 22-Apr-13 14:14:39

You are being OTT!

nenevomito Mon 22-Apr-13 14:17:53

I can bare (just about) the occasional ?!?

e.g. You did what?!? is perfectly acceptable when someone tells you they've just done a sponsored armpit licking event or something.

People who use ? instead of ! want a kick in the shins.

People who use ????? instead of ! and follow it up with lol have their own special place in hell.

Buzzardbird Mon 22-Apr-13 14:20:44

Could not agree more, attention seeking twots!

Tee2072 Mon 22-Apr-13 14:26:08

OMG! How can you not like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nenevomito Mon 22-Apr-13 15:11:09

Merrylegs Mon 22-Apr-13 15:19:30

Gruffalo - surely 'there my world?????'

<judges>

What?!?!?!?! Omg!!!!! That's sooooooo mean!! Why does it even bother you??? I dont get it!!!!!!

grin

DystopianReality Mon 22-Apr-13 15:25:08

How I loathe the exclamation mark....I think this is much more effective.

Merrylegs Mon 22-Apr-13 15:28:23

Actually OP, if you haven't already, don't Twitter. The updates will drive you bonkers.

'Soandso has replied to your tweet!'

'You have a new follower on Twitter!'

Why the exclamation mark? To me, the subtext there is - 'I know, what are the chances eh?!'

?! is definitely useful for expressing strong quizzical feelings (or the state that most of us enter on reading many of the bizarre posts on AIBU).

Sallyingforth Mon 22-Apr-13 15:34:05

I'm much more upset about too many apostrophe's.
smile

ElizabethB1978 Mon 22-Apr-13 15:35:32

Really bad grammar that's what it is..do these people not have a education?

TheChimpParadox Mon 22-Apr-13 15:38:20

OMG ! WTF ?!

LOL OP !!!

SoupDragon Mon 22-Apr-13 15:39:44

Shouldn't it be "pissed off with the abuse of the exclamation mark" ?

[ponders]

nenevomito Mon 22-Apr-13 15:51:35

Possibly SoupDragon, but my beef isn't with poor grammar today, it's with bloody exclamation marks! lol.

TheChimpParadox Mon 22-Apr-13 15:53:10

We need this !!
The Question Mark ???

StoicButStressed Mon 22-Apr-13 15:55:32

Soup <nods sagely>

Suspect it should be 'pissed of with the abuse of the exclamation mark';

ORgrin

'to be pissed off at the mis-use of the exclamation mark'

But WTF would I know? Am simple Journo who ensures my work is correctly 'exclaimed', but also a Mamma who LOVES MN and can FRQUENTLY see - and feel/desire - the need for MAHOOSIVE us of said exclaimation mark on here... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think OP should be more concerned with fact that our education system is appalling and some many people can't even spell or use even the most basic grammer correctly (IMHO)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

StoicButStressed Mon 22-Apr-13 15:56:45

use (obv) - not us

< awaits OP wrath at touchscreen typogrin >

andubelievedthat Mon 22-Apr-13 15:58:59

Do try to get out more, nightschool/debating group?????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, perhaps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

StoicButStressed Mon 22-Apr-13 16:01:30

And grin

valiumredhead Mon 22-Apr-13 16:01:48

I would take your point on board if you were my English teacher and this was an English exam but it's not so eff off

drjohnsonscat Mon 22-Apr-13 16:02:41

YABU. It's much better than LOL.

MrsDeVere Mon 22-Apr-13 16:02:54

Ahem...
Ok, yes, it is annoying, as is the over use of the comma. [lulz]

But I can see why it is being overused. Its the internet innit? People are trying to express themselves using text only and it can be hard.

Hence all our emoticons and !!!! and SHOUTING. I am over fond of the italic function.

If someone does it on a debate type thread it does make me think ODFOD.

Everyone is having a nice enough, reasoned yet frank discussion and someone does this;

'I DONT BELIEVE some people!!!!!! Is this all you have to think about ??????!!!'

Don't do that, its very annoying.

LegoAcupuncture Mon 22-Apr-13 16:05:46

YANBU!!!!!!!!!!

I have a friend on FB who uses it all the time, in everything she puts. I think it's to make her life seem more exciting.

FuckThisShit Mon 22-Apr-13 16:36:30

Stoic

Should it not be pissed OFF with.....?

<runs>

SamuelWestsMistress Mon 22-Apr-13 16:39:23

I'm an exclamation harlot! I can't help it! I'm very conscious of it and I do try to contain my overuse but so often I'm just so bloody excited!

digerd Mon 22-Apr-13 16:47:14

I use it to express laughter, wow, shock, indignation, animation, wonder etc.

It or they must be taken in context.

I have used captal letters to accent/stress a word with no emotion inmlied by me. But received a reply from a man that he found it rude!! i.e shock

digerd Mon 22-Apr-13 16:48:43

!! , annoyed with my typo implied.

Buzzardbird Mon 22-Apr-13 16:51:20

Stoic Don't you mean grammar Ha, ha,ha! <runs>

Buzzardbird Mon 22-Apr-13 16:51:56

Ah bollocks, forgot the ? blush

SomethingOnce Mon 22-Apr-13 16:53:17

Ellipsis abuse pisses me off, too.

It's three dots...

Wishing to indicate a long pause, or generate suspense, does not justify......................

And people who use..

Don't get me started.

Buzzardbird Mon 22-Apr-13 16:54:58

And why...use so many... ellipsis in a...paragraph?

SomethingOnce Mon 22-Apr-13 16:55:40

[meltdown]

nenevomito Mon 22-Apr-13 16:59:26

Yes ellipsis being used insetad of full stops gets to me as well.

I mean, what's so wrong with a full stop? Is it because people are getting americanised and calling it a period and they're concerned that its become shorthand for your, well, period?

Poor full stop. sad I am very sad at your demise.

Buzzardbird Mon 22-Apr-13 17:01:28

Poor Aunty Flo stop...

WhitesandsofLuskentyre Mon 22-Apr-13 17:03:46

I use an ellipsis when I want it to imply that my thoughts are trailing off, because I don't have a thought bubble punctuation mark e.g. I wonder...

GaryBarlowsPants Mon 22-Apr-13 17:05:16

Oh. I am an abuser of the exclamation mark.
<Resists the urge to add 5 exclamation marks to that sentence>.
I will stop. Immediately.

WildThongIWannaKnowForSure Mon 22-Apr-13 17:07:50

I will nevah stop........!!!!

Ha......!!!

reelingintheyears Mon 22-Apr-13 17:13:20

Ahem,Msbheave,

I can bare (just about) the occasional ?!?

Er,bare or bear, are you baring your bottom or is your bottom bearing you?

StoicButStressed Mon 22-Apr-13 17:14:03

FuckThis & Buzzard - Former I think is probably correct, latter was typo, but, in any event, it's clearly a shit situation...... Offers OP aologies and sympathies at heinous use of English language.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reelingintheyears Mon 22-Apr-13 17:14:12

Ha,MsBheave(d).

Geddit???????

StoicButStressed Mon 22-Apr-13 17:14:49

SHIT - forgot my bloody semi-colon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MrsDeVere Mon 22-Apr-13 17:52:59

I like a bit of this....

But DS's birth mother wrote me an entire FB message like this:

Abusive bollocks that is badly spelled......and other thing you should do this.....and more abusive....you are a vile person and mean......you should be giving me more stuff....why don't you do what I say.....more abuse.....lol.......but anyway.....and yet more abuse.....

Obviously I paraphrase but you get the gist. I couldn't even reply to the content of her missive. I could only respond with 'why do you keep doing this......after....every other....word....?

Her reply?

looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

I kid you not <sigh>

crashdoll Mon 22-Apr-13 18:09:06

I was a serial abuser of the !!!!! but now, I am much better!

nenevomito Mon 22-Apr-13 18:50:25

Sorry MissReeling. It's a case of 'do as I say, not as I do'. grin

Samu2 Mon 22-Apr-13 19:11:10

I abuse the ..... as well.

exoticfruits Mon 22-Apr-13 19:14:16

On MN I feel a great need for it!!!

StoicButStressed Mon 22-Apr-13 19:31:38

MrsD - I didn't think it was actually to possibly love you more than I did already... (COUNT PLEASE ALL ABOVE; just THREE ...'s)

...But I do! You are WONDEROUS and I love you and your posts HUGELYsmile xxx

Emmon Mon 22-Apr-13 19:38:37

I find it really quite bizarre and ironic you get offended by someone misusing an exclamation mark and choose to articulate this by using industrial language.

MrsDeVere Mon 22-Apr-13 19:44:35

<blush>!!!!!!!

SomethingOnce Mon 22-Apr-13 19:45:49

What is 'industrial language', Emmon?

Emmon Mon 22-Apr-13 19:49:21

Industrial language is swearing.

What. About. When. People. Over. Use. The. Full. Stop?

nenevomito Mon 22-Apr-13 20:46:59

MrsDV, she sounds a delight.

Arbitrary - Do people over use the full stop? At work it seems like folk have forgotten that they exist for the end of sentences, especially in a bullet point list.

It makes me weep giant tears of sadness for the poor little full stop.

valiumredhead Mon 22-Apr-13 21:05:38

My dh uses industrial language at work grin Made me laugh my socks of when HR told him the correct term.

I know someone with a PhD in English who over uses the full stop for emphasis online.

I. Kid. You. Not.

I think it's supposed to be like talking very slowly to stupid people.
