To think that plaits are just for school girls

Last night while my DH was plaiting my DD's hair he suggested that I would look good with plaits, he even "joked" that it would add a third hairstyle to my repertoire. After he finished with my DD he asked me to sit on the chair in front of him so he could do my hair, I made up some excuse and left the room. The truth is I was really uncomfortable with his suggestion, AIBU but in my head schoolgirls are the only people who should be allowed to plait their hair. Should I be worried, is this the kind of thing he's attracted to? What's next, will he be asking me to get my old school uniform out (which I luckily threw away when I left school)?

squeakytoy Mon 22-Apr-13 09:29:52

My great grandmother wore her hair in plaits when she was 103.. she didnt wear a school uniform at the time.

livinginwonderland Mon 22-Apr-13 09:30:08

mrsjay Mon 22-Apr-13 09:31:02

your Gran lived till she was 103 that is amazing smile I used to plait my hair in my 20s and early 30s <shrug> i think it is nice ,

dawntigga Mon 22-Apr-13 09:31:03

YABU and a bit odd tbh it's just a freaking hair style and there are a lot of models on the runway for fashion week who had them it'll probably be a trend soon.

mrsjay Mon 22-Apr-13 09:31:37

great gran*

Sharptic Mon 22-Apr-13 09:32:22

I think plaits are quite fashionable for adults at the moment, not the schoolgirl type though! I wish my hair was thick enough to carry them off.

I don't think I would have though much into it, maybe he was enjoying the hair styling and wanted to pamper you too, nothing wrong with that imo.

KatyTheCleaningLady Mon 22-Apr-13 09:32:23

I think plaits look great on grown women. I used to wear them when I went to the hair dressers for a cut and colour. Made a nice change from the usual blow out.

SomethingProfound Mon 22-Apr-13 09:32:28

Pig tails YANBU

A plait YABU.

MoaneyMcmoanmoan Mon 22-Apr-13 09:32:43

Yab a bit u.

I know a very funky photographer in her mid 40s who often wears her hair in plaits. She has a slight boho kind of look with jeans, flowy blouse and beads. She looks fab! It wouldn't suit everyone though... my own thinning, fine hair for example, would look ridiculous.

Are you sure your DH wasn't being kind?

namechange917381 Mon 22-Apr-13 09:32:59

I love plaits. Nothing wrong with them at any age, its just a hairstyle.

Yonilovesboni Mon 22-Apr-13 09:33:08

I am a mother of 4, I am 23 and I have my hair in plaits. hmm

ThingummyBob Mon 22-Apr-13 09:34:13

My schoolgirl dd wouldn't be seen dead with plaits in tbh, whereas I am often sporting a messy side plait shock

pictish Mon 22-Apr-13 09:34:17

Yabu. I used to wear the odd plait when my hair was long (as an adult) - never ever considered it anything to remark upon.

What an odd pov.

Fakebook Mon 22-Apr-13 09:34:40

I'm impressed that your DH can plait hair! Mine can't even tie hair normally.

No plaits aren't just for school girls. You get quite nice styles these days if you google hair styles, or have a look on Instagram at someone called Hairpost.

Pantah630 Mon 22-Apr-13 09:35:02

I'm 42 and often wear my hair in one plait, stops it getting tangled up. As a schoolgirl I had very short hair. YABU and a bit odd to be honest hmm

LadyMountbatten Mon 22-Apr-13 09:36:07

are for women who think they are bubbly crazy and wear hello kitty tops

I want to punch them in their "i am a chocooholic oh i love bags, me" faces

WoTmania Mon 22-Apr-13 09:36:20

edwinamerckx Mon 22-Apr-13 09:36:54

I know lots of sportwomen, particularly ones who need to wear a helmet (cyclists, skiers, snowboarders) who look great in plaits.

DeWe Mon 22-Apr-13 09:37:16

I plait my hair at night and if it's very hot. I've got quite thick long hair and I don't like it on the back of my neck at night/when hot.

I sometimes try and plait dh's hair when it's getting too long. grin

WorraLiberty Mon 22-Apr-13 09:37:43

Lady, they'll also be seen sporting 107 different kinds of stationary with cupcake patterns grin

LadyMountbatten Mon 22-Apr-13 09:37:51

NB I dont really condone violence, yes i have other things to worry about, i am just hamming it up for the website. no i dont need therapy

LadyMountbatten Mon 22-Apr-13 09:38:16

ooh im CRAZEEE about cupcakes

fuck off with your kitten wearing a crown make up bag

mrsjay Mon 22-Apr-13 09:38:38

lady i wasn't bubbly or even a 'bit mental me ' grin when I wore then it was just how I liked it I also used to put it in a french plait when going out , I just liked it,

LadyMountbatten Mon 22-Apr-13 09:38:46

they LOVE audrey hepburn and overuse that stupid Eleanor Roosevelt quote on facebook where they post pictures of their kids merit cards

WorraLiberty Mon 22-Apr-13 09:38:57

<< Snort >> grin

Trillz Mon 22-Apr-13 09:39:25

YABU to say that all hairdos involving plaits are for children.

YANBU to say that splitting all of your hair into two plaits is often associated with "dressing up as a schoolgirl".

Stylist magazine had a feature on adding small plaits to your hairstyle last week.

LippyDiDooDah Mon 22-Apr-13 09:40:42

I sometimes wear my hair in plaits and I'm late 30s. Believe me, I'm not the only one either.

Don't make such a big deal from a throwaway comment.

mrsjay Mon 22-Apr-13 09:40:42

let it al out lady dont hold back now grin

LadyMountbatten Mon 22-Apr-13 09:41:11

in ANY MINUTE someone will come and say " ooh you dont sound veyr nice at all" as if being NICE is good wink

mrsjay Mon 22-Apr-13 09:41:47

you made me smile with your ranting ladyM grin

tackytiger Mon 22-Apr-13 09:42:07

They always claim that Marilyn Monroe was a size 16...

LadyMountbatten Mon 22-Apr-13 09:42:13

plus they have silly crystal charms on their key ring

tulippa Mon 22-Apr-13 09:42:16

Thank you for your quick responses. Feeling truly prudish now blush.

I like plaits. I often have a side plait or a french plait. I also have coiled plaits quite often. MIL has a plait to her arse which she's worn that way since she was 19, neither of us look like schoolgirls. YABU.

AutumnMadness Mon 22-Apr-13 09:43:44

I am a very grown up and mature woman. I wear my hair in plaits (I use 3-4 different styles depending on how much time I have). I don't think it looks school-girlish at all. I have long hair and wearing it loose is a bit undignified at my age in professional circumstances (but I do occasionally on nights out). The plaits, on the other hand, keep it all in nice and neat.

mrsjay Mon 22-Apr-13 09:43:51

<arf> Crystal charms , you have described one of my closest friends she is so girly and cupcakey

ScumbagCollegeDropout Mon 22-Apr-13 09:44:37

If I didn't have a sidecut I would have my hair in plaits or low pigtails more often.

Nowt wrong with them at any age. It's just hair!

My DD is 27 and has unruly hair, she plaits it almost every day for work, it is practical. You will find that many women with long hair who work with groups who are prone to head lice etc plait their hair for work.
it must vary regionally, as I see many women with plaits of all ages and it was always a practical hairstyle for anyone who has sporty hobbies.

( plus, tbh what did Eleanor Roosevelt know about being inferior as the Presidents wife? )

imour Mon 22-Apr-13 09:46:39

plaits look nice on infant school girls , one plait or plait across the front can look nice on anyone any age ,dutch women have plaits , think this is more your problem , over thinking things .

noddyholder Mon 22-Apr-13 09:47:04

I sometimes plait a thing strip across the front when I wear a chignon so there and am 47 shock

Gingersstuff Mon 22-Apr-13 09:47:05

I am 43 and I love plaits. I've got long, wavy copper hair and it's a great way of keeping it under control and interesting.
And I'm very happy that Game of Thrones is back on because the plaits on the female characters are fooking AWESOME. And none of them are schoolgirls.

specialsubject Mon 22-Apr-13 09:47:09

wow, the 'everyone's sexually attracted to children' thing is really getting out of control get a grip.

the only hairstyle that is only for children and teens trying to be 'cute and bubbly' is bunches.

ShadowStorm Mon 22-Apr-13 09:48:01

YABU. There's plenty of hairstyles with plaits that don't look school girly.

LadyMountbatten Mon 22-Apr-13 09:48:47

its the way that women want to look CUTE with it.
yeah yeah practical schmactical, we know your game grin

fieldfare Mon 22-Apr-13 09:49:06

I work with small children and have hair down to the small of my back, it just gets in the way or they pull it or it ends up covered in glitter and glue. It normally ends up in a slightly messy side french plait, it's just so much easier.

gordyslovesheep Mon 22-Apr-13 09:49:38

ooh im CRAZEEE about cupcakes fuck off with your kitten wearing a crown make up bag

hahaha morning coffee all over keyboard

LadyMountbatten Mon 22-Apr-13 09:51:27

i like to add a dab of flour to my CRAZEE ditsy face.

Oh I am such a clown

I had my hair in a plait can look nice. when my hair was really long and hippy-like I plaited it often.

LtEveDallas Mon 22-Apr-13 09:54:54

My Gran wore her bottom length hair in a plait up to the day she died. She taught me how to plait, fench plait and corn-row hair before I'd even started school!

I wear my hair in a french plait most days for work - its that or a bun and I find a bun breaks my hair if I wear one for too long.

Messandmayhem Mon 22-Apr-13 09:55:05

yabu, it's just a hair style

My DD also wears pigtails and as she is very small, she does look cute and gets away with murder because she is little and cute.

Bibs123 Mon 22-Apr-13 09:57:21

I agree that women with pigtails look RIDICULOUS and as someone said like they think they are CRAZY/wear Hello Kitty tops (haha, I think women with 2 plaits look just the same although I don't know why you would necessarily feel so uncomfortable with your husbands suggestion as maybe he was just messing about. One plait can look OK...

Flobbadobs Mon 22-Apr-13 09:58:00

I saw a young woman/late teen with a gorgeous beehive type hairdo the other day with a plait coming out of it down to her waist. It looked fab, I would look a tit though..

LOL KansasCityOctopus - I'm reminded of a stage in my teens when I wore bunches for ages, with big flower hair bobbles...sticking up either side of my head....

Ooooh I was so cool then <<cringe>>

diddl Mon 22-Apr-13 10:04:01

Saw a friend of mine with pigtails recently-she looked fab imo.

Dresses retro & had them tied with "go gos/bobble"-whatever they're called.

She's 50btw!

GiveMumABreak Mon 22-Apr-13 10:05:02

....50 shades? He always had her in plaits blush

Stinkyminkymoo Mon 22-Apr-13 10:06:29

I always plait my hair when I ride and I'm 36. It's only a hairstyle!

Yonihadtoask Mon 22-Apr-13 10:07:13
jacks365 Mon 22-Apr-13 10:07:49

I'm 44 i don't even try for cute, i hate hello kitty and as for cupcakes don't even get me started but my hair is currently in bunches, i didn't have time to French plait it this morning and if i put it back into a ponytail my long fringe falls out but it stays in in bunches. Loose is not really an option when i'm working outside

WorraLiberty Mon 22-Apr-13 10:11:04

On a serious note though

That's a huuuuge conclusion to jump to, that your DH might be into schoolgirls just because he wanted to try plaiting your hair.

Has he given you any other reasons to think this?

Well someone had to ask

gordyslovesheep Mon 22-Apr-13 10:11:15

so the rule is you can ONLY have plaits if you own dragons?

noddyholder Mon 22-Apr-13 10:12:36

I an def not cute grin I do love plaits though esp on boys

badguider Mon 22-Apr-13 10:14:52

I've got really really thick hair so two plaits is the only way i can tie it up and get a helmet on for cycling or skiing. I also do it like that for camping and occassionally for yoga (can't lie flat on my back with a ponytail or single plait).

I think of it as an 'activity' hairstyle on adults - ok for sport, or camping or decorating type thing..

noddyholder Mon 22-Apr-13 10:18:47

lovely quite stylish I think depends how you dress

tulippa Mon 22-Apr-13 10:22:52

WorraLiberty I don't think my DH is into schoolgirls and sorry if i made it sound like that. I don't think men who like women in uniforms are all into kids, I just don't feel comfortable dressing up that way. Again I'm sorry if i gave that impression, I trust my DH and don't suspect him of anything like that.

Pobblewhohasnotoes Mon 22-Apr-13 10:24:32

How strange! Nothing wrong with plaits, I would plait my hair if it was thicker. My Mum has very long hair and still plaits it.

Bows in hair however, are for 7 year olds. Not adults trying to be Alice in wonderland.

WorraLiberty Mon 22-Apr-13 10:25:03

Ahh right got ya OP

RiffyWammal Mon 22-Apr-13 10:25:44

It makes me so frustrated to hear of people not saying what they think and TALKING to their partners - why on earth didn't you tell him it made you feel uncomfortable, and then you could have had a discussion like adults that might even have put your mind at rest?

I think your DH sounds nice, first for plaiting your DD's hair which many men would claim not to be able to do and secondly for offering to do yours. It was a nice offer and I feel sorry for him that you walked out the room!

hairtearing Mon 22-Apr-13 10:31:39

Fishtail plaits look v. stylish i like plaits

hairtearing Mon 22-Apr-13 10:32:12

However i think few adult women can pull it off.

Remotecontrolduck Mon 22-Apr-13 10:32:38

This looks lovely I think, not little girl-ish whatsoever....

Bit of a jump to think he's into kids because he likes plaits confused

noddyholder Mon 22-Apr-13 10:33:17

My dp loves plaits I have never thought about any more than that!

Operafan Mon 22-Apr-13 10:34:15

I think it either suits you or it doesnt.

In the 80s when I was clubbing lots of people wore plaits, I always wanted them and to look funky and boho - unfortunately they just make me look like a mad cat woman.

I always wanted to do the plait round your head thing...that seriously doesnt work with my face either.

HoHoHoNoYouDont Mon 22-Apr-13 10:39:02

Actually OP, I personally can see where you're coming from with this. My ex suggested the same. Had it been a style I wore when I first met him and he had said he liked it that way and would prefer me to where it like that more then I wouldn't have been phased. However, it's not a style I ever wore so I was a little hmm at his request. It seemed such an odd request at the time. Soon after he starting the 'dressing up' requests and yes, it was that of a school girl. Not my thing to be honest. We didn't stay together for long after that!

SkinnyLove Mon 22-Apr-13 10:39:13

It looks slightly ridiculous but not early as stupid as thinking yer man's a perv for plaiting your hair....thats just....nuts!!!

HubbaHubbaHubbaInHoobLand Mon 22-Apr-13 10:42:17

Plaits can look nice on adults too. especially the fishtail plait. I think you are being a bit paranoid to jump to that conclusion

MeSoFunny Mon 22-Apr-13 10:42:50

I'm sitting here with two plaits in my 39yr old greying hair right now. Deal with it.

SamraLee Mon 22-Apr-13 10:49:09

I wear my hair in pigtail braids/plaits low down under my ears, everyday. I always never knew I was so out of fashion. I also didn't know my husband was one of those types because he thinks they look nice. My whole life is a lie...

tulippa Mon 22-Apr-13 10:54:30

Just read back what i originally write and can see how it looked to some people. Let me just clarify one thing, I don't think my husband is into kids. My worry was that he would want me to dress up for him, and that is what I'm uncomfortable with, especially as my school uniform involved an ankle length kilt which used to itch like mad. I'm sorry for any confusion, as I said before I trust my DH, this post was about me being a bit of a hair prude and not about my lovely husband.

M0naLisa Mon 22-Apr-13 11:06:32

I sometimes put my hair in a plait round the back of my head. Mainly when it's wet

I'm always changing my hair and today it's in a messy low plait. I definitely do not look like a schoolgirl.

EmpressMaud Mon 22-Apr-13 11:18:56

Plaits suit some people very well, at any age.

KatyTheCleaningLady Mon 22-Apr-13 11:22:18

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with the hair style, and it sounds like your dh was pretty cool about the suggestion, but I do understand that sometimes some men can make their partners uncomfortable with requests for looking girlish. I know women who have been uncomfortable with requests for shaving their public hair off. The problem is usually that the guy gets whiney and won't drop the subject when the woman says no.

So, if the man doesn't respect "No, I don't like that look" and keeps pestering, then I would feel hmm about it. But, there's nothing wrong with the suggestion.

marciaoverstrand Mon 22-Apr-13 11:23:01

Good enough for Snoop Dog

Jux Mon 22-Apr-13 11:27:47

Standard practice in older girls/women at one time.

I have friends with waist-length or even longer hair, whose normal style is one very long plait down their backs. Then there are variations. Twist the plait into a bun, one plait over the shoulder etc.

WorraLiberty Mon 22-Apr-13 11:30:21

If you wore an ankle length kilt to school, I'm quite sure you'll be safe from any dressing up requests grin

FreedomOfTheTess Mon 22-Apr-13 11:31:19

YABU - I wear my hear in plaits a lot - God forbid I even have plaited pigtails (a la Heidi) sometimes.

It's just a hairstyle.

Thewhingingdefective Mon 22-Apr-13 11:55:27

Look on Pinterest - there are loads of great plaits. I just wish I hadn't had all my hair lopped off. By the time it's grown again plaits will be back out of fashion.

gordyslovesheep Tue 23-Apr-13 09:43:53

We can all have plaits now because we all have dragon s grin
