To expect them to do obs?

In paeds a&e with dd2 10months. 2hrs from triage to seeing a junior who says she needs to stay in for obs, that as she's maxed out on pain meds and her v temp is still 41 they need to find the cause and the wonderful paeds nurses have ways to cool her without meds. But the consultant needs to see her first.

That was 2.5 hrs ago.

I understand they are understaffed and overfull, that there may be other kids in dire need (though we are alone in the resus area) but I've now spent 4.5hrs watching my baby burn and shake and can do nothing about it other than keep her stripped.

She's got a rapidly developing rash (they saw the first spots), fast breathing, high heartrate and shakes, I want to be observed! I want the miraculous paeds nurses promised!

Gigondas Mon 08-Apr-13 02:36:57

Ring buzzer and say all this. They may just tell you to wait but at very least needs to be made comfortable . Hope she gets seen soon.

Softlysoftly Mon 08-Apr-13 02:43:21

No buzzer that I can find DH had been walling the corridors and can't find 1 single nurse. The waiting room is empty.

This is THE university teaching hospital in a capital city how can it be this empty??

fuckwittery Mon 08-Apr-13 02:46:43

Can you go back out to the a and e reception. Has she not been looked at at all for 2.5 hours?

pollywollydoodle Mon 08-Apr-13 02:47:09

phone switchboard and ask for nurse in charge

xigris Mon 08-Apr-13 02:50:39

You're in resus with no one with you? Tell DH to go to the reception desk as they'll be staff there. If not, stick your head out of the door and shout that you need some help. This will definitely get someone (I'm a nurse). Best of luck

Softlysoftly Mon 08-Apr-13 03:19:10

Ok collared a student nurse eventually whos retaken her temp (it's gone up).

Said a dr should be here soon. I'm convinced the Junior forgot us we shall see how long it is now. Still no meds nurse said dr said no sad

And yes in resus room noone had checked her at all.

Please just kick up a fuss, there is no way she should be in resus without observation.

PTA Mon 08-Apr-13 03:34:07

I second kicking up a fuss. I know that you don't want to be "that mum" but there is a time and a place and it is here and now.

Good luck and I hope the wee one gets better soon.

cedar12 Mon 08-Apr-13 03:44:43

Make a fuss please. Hope she gets better soon, good luck.

cher31 Mon 08-Apr-13 04:06:29

Hope you are getting somewhere.

LaCucina Mon 08-Apr-13 05:05:09

Continue to ask for help until you get it. Do not stop until you feel she is grttong what she needs. You are her advocate, do not feel bad. Hope she improves quickly.

Softlysoftly Mon 08-Apr-13 05:17:06

Sorry things started happening after that makes me even more sus that we were forgotten.

Dr came shes had a chest xray now up on a ward with a fan etc. She needs to feed or they will tube her. Battery low but will try and update when I can. Thankyou for backing up i wasnt just being impatient!

Softlysoftly Mon 08-Apr-13 05:20:40

Oh and shes head to toe in a rash (skin colour makes it mottled so not as easily visible) so she might need bloods taken. They are waiting though to see if temp down helps.

MammaTJ Mon 08-Apr-13 05:21:29

Hope she gets better soon.

Softlysoftly Mon 08-Apr-13 05:23:10

Said i wss stopping posting but if im honest im bricking it as we are just outside of the measels area, i was only on that thread yesterday sad im hoping they would have said by now though? I did try to ask.

MammaTJ Mon 08-Apr-13 05:24:49

They will want to be sure before the diagnose.

BedHanger Mon 08-Apr-13 05:27:12

Very glad to hear you are being looked after properly now.

anothershittynickname Mon 08-Apr-13 05:52:48

Sounds like you're having a nightmare - not what you need on top or worrying about your LO - I hope she's better soon, please try and get some rest xx

BeaWheesht Mon 08-Apr-13 06:21:51

How scary for you. I hope she's improved a bit now.

Rosa Mon 08-Apr-13 06:27:36

xigris Mon 08-Apr-13 08:30:41

How's it going, Softly? Really hope your DD is improving

Softlysoftly Mon 08-Apr-13 09:14:38

Morning some kind bloke just lent me his charger, her temp came down with the fanbut seems to be spiking again, I shouldnt have had the fan static on her apparantly as it cooled her too quickly but I didnt know and the young nurse just handed it to me before buggering off back to her kindle. Day staff on now and they have been amazingly attentive.

Some questionable areas on chest xray so waiting on drs rounds.

DeskPlanner Mon 08-Apr-13 10:07:58

How is she in herself ? Hope you don't have to wait very long for the doc. And what a nice man to lend you his charger.

Softlysoftly Mon 08-Apr-13 10:27:12

No better just crying and wanying to sleep. DH just called to say DD1 has a temp of over 39, I cant bewith both sad

Worried sick now. Though dd1 has had her mmr which makes measels less likely surely?

Softlysoftly Mon 08-Apr-13 10:29:24

Sorry AIBU to move from a rant about obs to a vaugely pitiful litany of whine?!

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts Mon 08-Apr-13 10:31:18

Hope both your DDs are ok xxxxxx

BeaWheesht Mon 08-Apr-13 10:35:21

Tell the nurse about your dd1.

Be bolshy if you have to be.

Good luck

It is so worrying when they are ill.

Glad the day staff seem to be doing their best to help your dd.

Has she managed to feed or take fluids at all?

Feel free to whine away.

If you feel at any point unsure about what they are doing ask them to explain to you. If they are not doing enough make noises about complaints. Don't worry about upsetting or offending your child comes first above their feelings, it is their job to make sure she receives good care.

DeskPlanner Mon 08-Apr-13 11:00:43

Oh you poor thing and your poor dds. Whine away its good for you.

DeskPlanner Mon 08-Apr-13 13:55:12

Has Dd2 seen the doc yet ? How is Dd1 ?

kinkyfuckery Mon 08-Apr-13 13:59:22

How is she this afternoon OP?

WakeyCakey Mon 08-Apr-13 15:36:23

Hope your DD is ok OP.
Sending you both (un-MN) hugs.
Hope they get to the bottom of it soon and it is just something simple and easy.
Don't beat yourself up about the fan, it's ridiculous for them to tell you you did it wrong!

WakeyCakey Mon 08-Apr-13 15:37:09

Oh gosh didn't see the bit about DD1 as well, hope they are both ok

BeaWheesht Mon 08-Apr-13 17:51:40

Any news?

StrawberriesTasteLikeLipsDo Mon 08-Apr-13 19:02:57

Hope both DDs improving OP

gailforce1 Mon 08-Apr-13 20:59:00

Any news OP, do hope you are all ok?

Softlysoftly Tue 09-Apr-13 13:39:41

Hiya thought I'd update sorry they moved us to a Ward with no reception at all.

I was allowed to take dd2 home today under strict instructions to take her back if she regresses. She has lung, ear and throat infections but the virus has burned it's way out and the rash has gone. Still no clue what it actually was. She drinking a bit and just needs meds and to sleep now.

Dd1 is ill but I'm glad to be home with her and my sister in law (gp) stayed all night with her last night and hopefully had been through the worst we shall wait and see. She's asleep and doesn't know we are home yet can't wait to see her face!

Being there made me truly thankful for healthy children, some of those poor kids and parents on the wards sad heartbreaking.

Thankyou as always mn for being a hand to hold. I shall not complain about my kids ever again! I bet I last a week

BeaWheesht Tue 09-Apr-13 13:56:34

So glad you're home. Hope both Dds get back to full health soon and you get a rest!

kinkyfuckery Tue 09-Apr-13 15:45:37

Glad you are home and your DD is on the mend.

DeskPlanner Tue 09-Apr-13 16:25:26

Glad she's home. thanks
