I needed to do some deliveries this afternoon, and as the weather was quite nice, I decided to walk rather than take the car. As a result, I was able to take in my surroundings a little more carefully than usual.

Over the course of my approx. three mile walk, I swear I must have seen tens and tens of houses with hearts hanging up in windows, on doors and on gates. All made out of painted punched metal or wicker. They all seemed to be huge, maybe 30cm in diameter. Some of them were quite nice I suppose, but I couldn't help but wonder when I missed that particular memo.

Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon, or is it just my very middle class suburb of a fairly dull town?

Sunshinewithshowers Sun 17-Mar-13 19:43:19

YABU

my house is full of them

NewAtThisMalarky Sun 17-Mar-13 19:48:04

It's what swingers use instead of pampas grass nowadays. You obviously live in a very friendly area.

Of course, it's possible that not everything I typed is true.

Bluestocking Sun 17-Mar-13 19:48:09

Not new, have been around for a while, but definitely have a lot in common with twigs 'n' pebbly shit.

BumpingFuglies Sun 17-Mar-13 19:53:07

And you care because...?

InNeedOfBrandy Sun 17-Mar-13 19:54:44

I have a lovely wicker heart on my wall grin

BumpingFuglies Sun 17-Mar-13 19:57:00

Got The Wicker Man on mine, Brandy grin

cocolepew United States Sun 17-Mar-13 19:59:20

I collect hearts. I'm not a swinger but can't vouch for DH.
All mine are indoors though.

RainbowsFriend Sun 17-Mar-13 19:59:26

My NDN has a wicker chicken hanging up outside her door.

It looks evil

Wickedwaterwitch Sun 17-Mar-13 19:59:56

YANBU and they are EVERYWHERE (but not in my house)

NaturalBlondeYeahRight Sun 17-Mar-13 20:00:08

None here, weirdos,

quickly removes wicker heart from above fireplace

Yep they're everywhere. I have a friend who has taken to making gingham heart cushiony hangy things and trying to sell them to us on FB.

Counts twelve heart shaped nick nacks in living room. Wondered why I have had funny looks at school gate grin

MissAnnersley Sun 17-Mar-13 20:04:43

Oh dear, I have a few.

IroningBoredDaily Sun 17-Mar-13 20:07:22

I don't have any wicker hearts, but I do have a wicker star that comes out at Christmas and hangs in the window.

piratecat Sun 17-Mar-13 20:09:33

i have 12 heart shaped pebbles. I win.

(collected by my own hand from the beach over past few yrs not bought as a set from the Range)

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed Sun 17-Mar-13 20:10:16

Oh yes it's rife round here.
When we viewed our current house it had at least one and sometimes several large wicker rings/wreaths on the wall in each room. Not hearts though so presumably in the dark ages of sticks and pebbly shite

dingit Sun 17-Mar-13 20:11:04

Holy shit. My next door neighbours are swingers. - runs to hide wicker heart in dining room.

BarredfromhavingStella Sun 17-Mar-13 20:13:40

Yabu, I have 2 such items hung in my bedroom window DH would agree with you however

MooMooSkit Sun 17-Mar-13 20:14:03

They are always listed as "shabby chic wicker hearts" or something on ebay. The whole shabby chic thing seems to be big.

scratchandsniff Sun 17-Mar-13 20:20:11

Oh dear I'm guilty of this. People keep buying me them as presents. One friend got me a heart shaped memo blackboard thingy for the kitchen and a wooden heart hangy thing for my bday, feel like I can't not hang them up, but am concerned It's beginning to get a bit twee. Do star shaped wicker things count? Got one of those in the bedroom window.

sue52 Sun 17-Mar-13 20:28:18

Oh dear. I've got a heart shaped blackboard thingy in my kitchen. I write messages to my cleaner on it. I do hope she doesn't think DH and I are swingers. We live in a small village and rumors do spread.

Startail Sun 17-Mar-13 20:29:44

Have wicker star on top of my tree at Christmas, a proper pagan pentagram style one.

No wicker hearts, DD has some heart wall stickers. Butterflies are my thing and they appear in my bedroom.

RainbowRabbit33 Sun 17-Mar-13 20:32:23

Oh, it seems I was a bit late to the party, guess that shows I walk round with my eyes closed most of the time!!

I have just realised that we have a red glass candle holder on our lounge window sill. I have never lit the candle, but it's just dawned on me that it would make a big red light. Maybe I should bin it and go and buy a wicker heart!

aftermay Sun 17-Mar-13 20:34:43

DDs have heart-shaped mirrors. Is it the heart shape or the wicker you object to? I've seen them in shops but not in people's houses. But then I don't go our much.

RainbowRabbit33 Sun 17-Mar-13 20:39:17

I don't really object to them, I was just surprised to see so many. I wouldn't buy them myself (although am apparently happy to risk people thinking I run a house of ill-repute), just can't see the point.

I have two white wicker hearts in my large front room window. And two red candle holders, the glass ones which hold a tea light)

Darn it, I am running a house of ill-repute aren't I??? shock

Eebahgum Sun 17-Mar-13 20:48:05

I LOVE heart shaped things and have a selection of wicker type hearts hanging on the wall of my hall way. None in windows yet though.

BookFairy Sun 17-Mar-13 20:48:36

I haven't seen any in shops or houses. The north west is very behind the times.

BarredfromhavingStella Sun 17-Mar-13 20:48:47

lol, i have a Moroccan lantern in my front landing window that I have to keep turning so that the red side isn't facing out-now wondering what the neighbours say about me...

fuckwittery Sun 17-Mar-13 20:50:56

I have one in my house, but I made it for my best friend's wedding - we all did, willow weaving was part of the weekend, and she used this one for the top table, so I love it. It is personalised as well with symbols that meant something to them.

fuckwittery Sun 17-Mar-13 20:51:30

anyway - I suspect the swingers needing to have a special sign outside their house is a bit outdated what with the internet nowadays.

fuckwittery Sun 17-Mar-13 20:52:01

*at the hen weekend should have been somewhere in that sentence.

SirChenjin Sun 17-Mar-13 20:52:17

I have 4 in my kitchen - 3 are slate and I got the kids to write their names on one each. Very nice they look too.

My house also has twigs in a vase and wallpaper feature walls. My house is ace.

fuckwittery Sun 17-Mar-13 20:52:19

not the swingers post, the one before <leaves thread>

I have countless heart-shaped knickknacks in my house and a wicker heart wreath on my front door. But I do not swing.

aldiwhore Sun 17-Mar-13 20:54:03

Just realised I've had a wicker heart hanging on my door for ages... I must be a trend setter. It was 50p, and I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it. I LIKE it, but if every bugger's doing it, it's coming down.

aldiwhore Sun 17-Mar-13 20:55:37

I have red fairy lights in the window too - yikes.

Oh well, callers will be disappointed.

Selks Sun 17-Mar-13 21:02:02

Yes, they are definitely the next 'twigs in vase'. Sorry all if you that have them, but 'tis true smile

aftermay Sun 17-Mar-13 21:08:06

I have red candles in the window too. I suppose I can change them now since Xmas is over.

Mandy2003 Sun 17-Mar-13 21:13:42

The interior decorator at work has put Pussy Willow in a vase grin

jird Sun 17-Mar-13 21:15:15

i am starting a new craze by just having net curtains in my window with a hint of half decomposing insects in webs

I bought a wicker wreathy thing and some plastic eggs to make an Easter decoration.
And it will go on the front door, much to DHs disgust.

It will look lovely with the Easter Tree that I'll be doing too

<<Folds arms and sticks nose in air>>

FakePlasticLobsters Sun 17-Mar-13 21:23:41

piratecat - you are me. It's official I also have 12 heart shaped pebbles collected by me DS on the beach.

We also have some kind of wicker circle thing that DS is decorating for easter. And some twigs in a vase. He collected them in the wood, we painted them silver and have hung easter decorations from them. They are temporary, but I'm getting quite fond of them.

My friend has just planted some pampas grass though. Who knew?

Buzzardbird Sun 17-Mar-13 21:24:19

Hearts

But the thing that stopped me in my tracks and made me laugh so much I had to cross my legs and clench in the garden centre today was....

a quarter scale cow - for £270 shock

I had wicker balls years ago tho grin

sjupes Sun 17-Mar-13 22:08:44

....They used to sit on a fancy plate thing on my coffee table.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance Sun 17-Mar-13 22:09:59

Keep them - they'll come back round (see what I did there) in time.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder Sun 17-Mar-13 22:11:41

I have a large wicker kidney on my door.

I love them. Just love them! grin

I have one wicker heart and one metal one.
I have three wicker balls of varying sizes.
I have a vase with sticks and a bowl with pebbly shite.
I have a feature wall.
I overuse magnolia and natural hessian paint.
I have a canvas of my children on the wall.

However I don't have a corner sofa (yet)

Am I the winner?

LividDil Sun 17-Mar-13 22:20:21

What I've noticed a few of recently is green plastic balls hanging outside houses and supposed to look like topiary hedges. I think hearts are nicer.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance Sun 17-Mar-13 22:24:03

Do you have big letters mint?

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 17-Mar-13 22:29:50

mint what about wall decals - so plastic sayings pasted onto the wall?

Manchesterhistorygirl Sun 17-Mar-13 22:34:44

The north west IS NOT behind the times! I have a heart cushiony thing and my friend has wicker and wirey harts!

cocolepew United States Sun 17-Mar-13 23:00:47

I've just realised I don't have a whicker heart. I have bell ones, velvet ones, wooden ones and metal ones.

I'll have to go shopping.

mint It depends whether you have bunting too or not.

fluffyraggies England Mon 18-Mar-13 09:36:10

I have a cream metal heart thing above our bed.
I have twigs with lights.
I have 5ft high long thin twigery with little leaves in huge glass vase.
I have assorted shells in an over sized hurricane lamp.
I have black pebbly shit round a candle.
I have sticks in smelly stuff in both loos.
I have little fake rubber cacti in fake pebbly shit in bathroom
grin
I win i win i win!

eavesdropping Mon 18-Mar-13 09:46:51

We had wicker hearts at our wedding reception last year. Realise that the whole shabby chic thing is a bit overdone now, but thought them far nicer than having tacky balloons

Eskino Mon 18-Mar-13 09:52:23

No heart, pebbly, sticky candly shit but

I do have a badly stuffed weasel wearing a cowboy hat on my fireplace.

Maybe taxidermy will be the new thing and I'm so bloody fashion it hurts

mrsjay Mon 18-Mar-13 09:54:14

my mums got rid of her pebbles and 'stuff' to get wicker hanging things they are in her kitchen and hall, im too lazy to keep up with any trends blush

Sugarice Mon 18-Mar-13 09:57:38

I love heart shaped stuff, particularly jewellry with heart pendants, not much around the house though, might start now I've read this grin. I love star shaped stuff too, I have star shaped fairy lights draped over stick shit in my hall.

Dead classy me! wink

freddiefrog Mon 18-Mar-13 09:59:34

I'm going to have to go shopping. I have no twigs in vases, no bunting, no wicker hearts (or anything heart shaped in fact) and the only pebbles in our house are DD2's prized possessions and kept in a Quality Street tin under her bed

I do have a wooden lighthouse in the bathroom and a model yacht on the landing window sill - I think yachts and lighthouses are my area's equivalent of twigs and wicker hearts

Feminine Mon 18-Mar-13 09:59:57

I've had this 'style' before it was trendy.

I have shabby/ cottage style taste.

Its so easy these days... grin

BrainSurgeon Mon 18-Mar-13 10:02:16

grin Eskino

I got given a wicker heart once.... Really struggled to find a place for it... It ended up hanging on a random nail above our toilet loo

Manchesterhistorygirl Mon 18-Mar-13 10:25:41

Eskino I think you may actually be a hipster.

FairPhyllis Mon 18-Mar-13 18:46:53

eskino weasels are the new owl cushions.

SomethingOnce Mon 18-Mar-13 19:30:41

And about one step away from birds' nests on cake stands.

Movingtimes Mon 18-Mar-13 19:39:58

I have a big light up heart-shaped wreath on the living room wall. I got it from Ikea at Christmas about 10 years ago and kept it up because I like it.
<<trend-setter>>

threebats Argentina Mon 18-Mar-13 19:47:52

Jesus - have just sped out to the garage gates and removed the wicker heart... Thought the couple two doors down with one on their front door were suddenly very over friendly as we waved in the mornings before work - in the nick of time I reckon... In the nick of time.
I will replace it with the voodoo doll I have that says ex-husband and comes complete with pins - currently sat in his chest, eyes and bollocks! Yeah....

Movingtimes Mon 18-Mar-13 19:55:02

Bird's nests on cake stands? Are you sure that's not just people like me who are really crap at cake decorating?

MalkieFraser Mon 18-Mar-13 20:02:40

What's wrong with big ceramic letters? I have 'SHAG' on my bedroom windowsill and 'SHITE' in my downstairs toilet.

SomethingOnce Mon 18-Mar-13 20:04:55

I saw the nests on a site somebody linked to from here. Hipster-tastic!

Malkie
I need 'WASH' and 'BRUSH' in my bathroom for my 13 yo DS.

Movingtimes Mon 18-Mar-13 20:23:42

Love it!

Never mind the wicker hearts, I've got a feckin massive clump of pampas grass in my front garden... And so have next door... and its too dark now to go out with a spade to dig it up...Shite! Why did no one tell me this?

HazeltheMcWitch Mon 18-Mar-13 20:59:03

openerofjars I searched that site for taxidermy weasels with cowboy hats on. I wanted to see eskino's gaff.

But she's probably even too avant garde for there. She thinks that site is sooooo February 2013 sad.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance Mon 18-Mar-13 21:02:57

Dangerous don't go near that pampas grass without a donkey jacket, welding mask and gauntlets - that feckin stuff's like razor wire.
Maybe that's why it's 'kinky'?
Aaargh where's the brain bleach!

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance Mon 18-Mar-13 21:05:27

Maybe Openerofjars lives in that hose on the property porn thread that had a big stuffed upright wolf in a suit standing in a window - just casually, like.
It has been on the market for a while....

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance Mon 18-Mar-13 21:06:07

house - no one lives in a hose.

HazeltheMcWitch Mon 18-Mar-13 21:07:11

I was wondering if you thought opener was a snake. Or Peter Crouch.

mum47 Mon 18-Mar-13 21:14:47

I have hearts everywhere in my house, wicker, metal, fabric, you name it. I also have big letters and wordy signs everywhere. My latest is one that says "Whatever" which I have put at the top of the stairs between my boys's bedroom - I just point at it as and when required. I also have lots of distressed painted furniture and my kitchen is a homage to the 50's. I bloody love my house, as does my poor emasculated DH

Bartlebee Mon 18-Mar-13 21:18:07

I agree.

I visit houses for my job. Hearts are everywhere.

Next trend I have observed is knitted stag heads - I have seen about 30 lately.

Jbck Mon 18-Mar-13 21:27:34

Wicker hearts are so A/W2011 round here. I have none but refuse to give up my twigs n lights.
Might look into some taxidermy though grin

OrangeLily Mon 18-Mar-13 21:42:10

I've just realised we have a Christmas themed wicker heart handily hid behind the Christmas tree and a curtain on a window handle that is still there! I didn't even like it at Christmas but it was a gift blush

In full display of all the neighbours too!

Bartlebee Mon 18-Mar-13 21:42:58

You wouldn't believe how many people have these wall lights and the matching ceiling light.

Movingtimes Mon 18-Mar-13 21:49:07

Gosh, they're not cheap are they?

DeepRedBetty Mon 18-Mar-13 21:54:52

Don't say I've got to throw away my Bits of Wood in Smelly Stuff! I've only just discovered them. Got to cover the whiff of dps feet etc with something, and I react badly to the propellant in all those Airwick/Glade type squirty air fresheners (and in most spray deodorants too, so it's roll-on or stick only in this house). Smelly candles have to be supervised, so do evaporators - and then someone gave me one of these things and it was wonderful.

The only wicker thing I've got is the star for the top of the Christmas tree, and I've already taken down the bunting we had for a couple of years as I was bored of it.

And DP refused to let me have random words in big letters right from the start, so never guilty of that one.

So please may I be excused?

JollyYellowGiant Mon 18-Mar-13 22:04:40

My house is full of pebbly shit. Every time we go for a walk DS finds a stone and takes it home. They are bloody everywhere.

We also have about 25 sunflowers growing in little pots on our living room table.

No hearts, or sticks or anything bought though.

openerofjars Mon 18-Mar-13 22:05:40

Eh? confused. Peter Crouch? Snakes? Have you lot been at the metal polish again?

My wolf effigy is in the attic, not at the window, anyway.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance Mon 18-Mar-13 22:14:13

Jolly that's allowed. DS1 and 2 started down their geologist paths that way smile
It's the actual going out and handing over hard earned wonga for twigs and pebbly shit that's shock

HazeltheMcWitch Mon 18-Mar-13 22:22:00

opener - no metal polish, alas. Not yet. I was trying to think of things that might live in a hose blush

tully67 Mon 18-Mar-13 22:38:53

I was going to buy one ... not so sure now ...

Mrsrobertduvall Tue 19-Mar-13 07:52:41

Next have extended their "Live, life, love" range to the garden...they have big letters spelling out "GROW" shock

i would disown any friend who had that among the begonias.
