to not like Carrie Bradshaw?

(Not sure if this is the right section but ...)

I recently re-watched the whole of S&TC (ill in bed with not much else to do), and never realised before what a whiney, needy and obsessive woman she really is.

She only apologised to Natasha for having an affair with her husband because she couldn't believe someone in New York could hate her that much hmm

She willingly went back to Big countless times regardless of knowing that she was going to be hurt again.

She screwed over Aidan twice

I could go on grin

I know she's just a fictional character and the show would be boring if she was perfect.

But aibu to really dislike her?

BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound Thu 28-Feb-13 16:38:14

I do think she's too much up her own hole.

Tubegirl Thu 28-Feb-13 16:48:02

YANBU, I really only thought this as I sat through the offensive carcrash that is SATC2 but having since rewatched some classic SATC you're right - she's awful but awful in good shoes. I always wanted to be Miranda anyway but with Carrie's shoes. smile

DieWilde13 Thu 28-Feb-13 16:48:36

Couldn't agree more. I never understood the appeal of the show, to be honest. <shrug>

Tubegirl Thu 28-Feb-13 16:48:48

And even though they're a bit naff I still kinda want a name necklace...

TheCrackFox Thu 28-Feb-13 16:56:05

And she made Charlotte give her old engagement ring because Carrie had spent all her money on ridiculous shoes. Who treats a friend like that? Only a total arse.

Fairypants Thu 28-Feb-13 16:58:24

I couldn't watch the series because I found her so annoying! And also, just not even attractive despite the hype.

lolaflores Thu 28-Feb-13 16:59:33

Skinny, stupid, shallow waste of flesh. I watched an episode, to give it the benefit of the doubt, was unswayed by it. SJP is a one trick pony, and the films were dire beyond all possible belife. The product placement, the tissue thin plots and obscene devotion to bits of clothing and a cushion that cost 200 dollars?!?!

I sat through a bit of the first film (for my DD1) and dug my heels in on the others. No No No No. This is liberated women? Doing it for themselves? by the way, how did it get a 12 rating when a great big penis swings through shot courtesy of the shaggy one's neighbour having an outside shower? HOW

MonthlyNeedsToTakeHerTime Thu 28-Feb-13 17:00:54

Hate it, YABU. Couldn't stand the films but went with my friends because they loved the fashion. Thought they all dressed badly anyway.

MarmaladeTwatkins Thu 28-Feb-13 17:05:09

It dawned on me half way through series 3 that was was a neurotic whingebag and no wonder she couldn't keep a bloke.

I quite fancied Big, even though he was an arsehole. All of the other men in that programme though, dodgy. Apart from lovely Steve who married Miranda.

RainbowCrystals Thu 28-Feb-13 17:06:08

And she made Charlotte give her old engagement ring because Carrie had spent all her money on ridiculous shoes. Who treats a friend like that? Only a total arse

How did I forget that point! Makes me dislike her even more now.

It's not up to Charlotte to sort out Carrie's (a 30 something year old womans) financial mess. Carrie should have eBayed her shoes instead of taking the ring smile

RainbowCrystals Thu 28-Feb-13 17:06:52

Apart from lovely Steve who married Miranda.

Loved both Steve and Harry.

FadBook Thu 28-Feb-13 17:13:25

I love the show, always have done but YANBU about Carrie Bradshaw.

I think the whole series portrays women well, in that you normally warm to a particular one, or make connections with one of the charaters (as you might with some of your own friends too smile)

You have the career women in both Miranda and Samantha (and Charlotte to some extent but gave it up to become a mother); the mothers in both Miranda and Charlotte (Miranda trying to juggle motherhood and a career); the 'out there' single liberated career woman Samantha - who only looks after herself (I know at least 2 of these type of people). And then Carrie who is very shallow and self absorbed. Of course the series was around her and her 3 other friends, but the story lines made her to be very whiny, everything to be "all about her" and no consideration sometimes to other people's feelings or things going on in their life.

I still do love SATC though - it is just something to watch without having to concentrate (as I find a lot of US programmes!) The films are car crash tat tv, but if you are big fan of the whole series, then the films are just an extension of that.

GregBishopsBottomBitch Thu 28-Feb-13 17:17:09

Carrie's only redeeming feature was in the first film when she talked to Miranda over deciding whether Steve was worth forgiving over his night stand.

CamilleMoriarty Thu 28-Feb-13 17:23:52

I just saw the episode where Stanford says to her - "what do you think about Marcus?"

And Carrie just replies - "nice" and moves the subject back to her.

(It was the episode where Carrie assumes a woman is telling celebrities that she's the bad breakup girl hmm )

And Stanford thankfully puts her in her place.

BaresarkBunny Thu 28-Feb-13 19:11:44

She always reminds me of the dreaded Liz Jones.

Bobyan Thu 28-Feb-13 19:50:38

The whole programming was all about Samantha for me! Carrie was just the narrator to link the characters together.

MarmaladeTwatkins Thu 28-Feb-13 19:59:16

"She always reminds me of the dreaded Liz Jones."

Why has this never occured to me before?!

StuntGirl Thu 28-Feb-13 20:47:29

She's vile. I thought I liked the programme til I bought the boxset, watched it the whole way through and realised I hated it! Awful characters.

littlemisssunny Thu 28-Feb-13 20:50:48

I don't like her, but I love Charlotte, she is very pretty and is a lovely person <think I might have a bit of a girl crush blush >

hermioneweasley Thu 28-Feb-13 20:54:40

No, the character of Carrie is just awful. Whiney, superficial and self obsessed. I also hated Ally in Ally McBeal and Ellen Grey in Grey's anatomy. Americans seem to like their leading ladies scrawny and whiney.

BinksToEnlightenment Thu 28-Feb-13 21:40:14

I got to thinking.....

I hate the way she gets to sum up the beginning or end of every episode with her bloody got to thinking.

But Charlotte and Samantha I love.

And Big. Sorry, but I do!

GregBishopsBottomBitch Thu 28-Feb-13 21:52:08

Binks That bloody annoying me too, every episode she said it.

WallyBantersJunkBox Thu 28-Feb-13 21:52:32

Binks that one boils my p*ss too....

I hate the way she discusses everything she wants from a man with such a power stance in the cafe, and then turns into some lisping, hair twirling, foot swinging, breathless no mark in the company of her various "men".

You're a middle aged woman eating pot noodle in a fag stained bed sit. Get a friggin grip.

You're 40 and planning a LalaLand wedding that your fiancé totally didn't want and you ignored his very clear requests. Then you sulked yourself sick about it and dropped your best mate because she made one comment to your fiancé in the midst of her marriage (and family breakdown).

If Big wasn't rich and powerful you wouldn't look twice at him.

You're not cute, You look like Dee Snider from Twisted Sister.

I could go on, but I've realized it's not real.

yaimee Thu 28-Feb-13 21:56:53

I think for a show that was supposed to be about friendship, she is a pretty shitty friend!

GregBishopsBottomBitch Thu 28-Feb-13 21:57:06

Wally couldnt put it better myself.

WallyBantersJunkBox Thu 28-Feb-13 22:11:29

Oh and here's some advice I've learnt, strangely in my 42 years on the planet. If you're trying to make flirty conversation with a man, and you are scarfing down an oversized pretzel/cupcake/hotdog (insert various "park snacks") - it's not sexy to keep talking with food all over your gob, throwing your head back as bits are falling out of your mouth into a flirtatiously poised napkin.

No matter what you think. Just stop. Stop it now.

<<realises why she is on blood pressure medication>>

BinksToEnlightenment Thu 28-Feb-13 22:15:15

Her only redeeming feature is that she saved the day in Flight of the Navigator.

sweetsoulsister Thu 28-Feb-13 22:16:10

WallyBanters - I love Carrie but I love your hilarious comments even more! Thanks for the laugh - you are a gifted writer!!

BinksToEnlightenment Thu 28-Feb-13 22:20:36

Indeed she is a gifted writer - unlike our Carrie!

Seriously, who pays her for them goddamn articles? They barely make any sense when you've already seen the episode she's making vague reference to in her ridiculous weekly epiphanies.

TheCrackFox Thu 28-Feb-13 22:22:13

That was so funny and yet so true.

I liked Miranda, IMO Cynthia Nixon is the only one that can act.

SpeckledBird Thu 28-Feb-13 22:25:05

Nup, not BU. She's a shallow, nasty, self-obsessed bitch and what makes it more hilarious is that SJP clearly loves her. Have you seen the Jonathon Ross interview where he says 'basically, Carrie is a nightmare, well done you for playing it so well, god, she's so needy.

And SJP says 'Really? Carrie is needy? Why would you say that? What is it about her that makes you think she's needy? Tell me. I don't think she's needy. She's not needy. Why would you say that? Why? How is she needy? I can't believe you say she's needy?'

And then we got the films.

WallyBantersJunkBox Thu 28-Feb-13 22:29:26

I don't know Binks wouldn't you love to feel you could invest all your relationship secrets into a best friends trust over Eggs Benedict at a Harlequin tiled cafe, and then discover the following week that all the intimate details of your dildo/bum sex/premature ejactulating boyfriend are spread over the local paper with just your initials used, and she didn't even pick up the cheque?

I know I would.

FlouncingMintyy Thu 28-Feb-13 22:34:49

She was based on a real person wasn't she? A New York journalist ... can't remember her name.

FlouncingMintyy Thu 28-Feb-13 22:36:34
BinksToEnlightenment Thu 28-Feb-13 22:36:53

Sure would, Wally!

I'd certainly love to read all about how my upsetting issues can be publicly resolved by my best friend getting a new pair of shoes and zig-zag strutting off into the sunset like a confused catwalk model.

Lovecat Thu 28-Feb-13 22:38:21

pmsl @ Dee Snider from Twisted Sister - she so does! grin grin grin

notnowImreading Thu 28-Feb-13 22:41:46

Even Sarah Jessica Parker says she's 'the least relatable character I've ever played'.

JackReachersFoldingToothbrush Thu 28-Feb-13 22:42:48

I don't think she was meant to be particularly likeable though. Remember that episode where Miranda did her back in, so Carrie sent Aiden(?) to deal instead of going herself, and then went round only pretending to apologise so she could talk about herself?

Can't stand her - she is every negative stereotype about women in one bony little bundle BUT the writer of the novel, Candace Bushnell, absolutely HATES women. I read a couple of her other books on holiday once and it's jaw-dropping how open her misogyny is - women who have sex are always sluts, women who don't are frigid bitches.

The four women in SATC are all presented as negative stereotypes - the slut, the career bitch, the mindless Stepford and the needy ditz - because they're the only way the writer can view women. The horror of it all is that hordes of women think it's flattering and like it.

(First time I watched it, I hated Aiden - now I think he's amazing. Can't stand Steve, love Harry. Big isn't actually a character. It might have been better for the flow of the series if he'd never actually been portrayed on screen.)

I felt sorry for Carrie - she was so massively self obsessed.

I think Kim Cattrall is a brilliant actress, saw her in Private Lives recently (Noel coward play) and she was amazing and astonishingly beautiful.

BOF Thu 28-Feb-13 22:49:38

WallyBanters, I think I am a little bit in love with you...

Carrie reminded me of the whiney self-obsessed person that many of us might have been once when we were about eighteen. It was a bit pathetic in a woman of her age.

Fakebook Thu 28-Feb-13 22:52:41

Which woman walks down the street wearing a tutu? Yanbu!

BOF Thu 28-Feb-13 22:53:36

Hmm, NotYouNaanBread- I tend to see Aiden as a space-invading clinger. Do I need to re-watch it?

ifancyashandy Thu 28-Feb-13 22:54:26

Another vote for Harry. I would.

Lighthousekeeping Thu 28-Feb-13 22:54:44

I started this just the other day

And I do wonder if SJP got annoyed playing her by the end? She started off alright but after she got back with Big the second time I knew she'd end up with him. So wrong. It ruined it for me.

KeatsiePie Algeria Thu 28-Feb-13 22:54:57

I hate the way she gets to sum up the beginning or end of every episode with her bloody got to thinking.

Yes this! And Carrie became more and more a caricature of herself as the seasons rolled on. The other ones too, to a lesser extent. It became harder and harder to believe that anyone could possibly be that self-centered, learn that little from her mistakes, etc. -- it was like she was regressing.

I did love to watch it, but wouldn't enjoy it now. Maybe it hasn't aged well.

ifancyashandy Thu 28-Feb-13 22:55:05

(and I agree that Carrie is a self obsessed needy PIA)

MarthasHarbour Thu 28-Feb-13 22:55:44

wallybanters this made me spit my tea out at my computer laughing

Oh and here's some advice I've learnt, strangely in my 42 years on the planet. If you're trying to make flirty conversation with a man, and you are scarfing down an oversized pretzel/cupcake/hotdog (insert various "park snacks") - it's not sexy to keep talking with food all over your gob, throwing your head back as bits are falling out of your mouth into a flirtatiously poised napkin.

I didnt realise how much this pissed me off about her until now!! wink
grin grin

WallyBantersJunkBox Thu 28-Feb-13 22:55:48

Binks don't forget to hold a faraway look in your eye, and nibble your bottom lip, as you skip into the road waving down a yellow taxi with an oversized baguette clutch paid for by your friends solace seeking tidbits.

Very important to skip...

KeatsiePie Algeria Thu 28-Feb-13 22:55:49

I loved Aiden. I totally loved him. I considered him to have had a very lucky narrow escape.

discotequewreck Thu 28-Feb-13 22:56:04

'you're a middle aged woman eating pot noodle in a fag stained bedsit. Get a grip.'

I haven't laughed so hard in yonks, thank you!

GregBishopsBottomBitch Thu 28-Feb-13 22:56:59

I met Kim Cattrall, she was a nice lady.

GrowSomeCress Thu 28-Feb-13 23:06:24

YANBU, she was basically the worst part of the show!

TheCrackFox Thu 28-Feb-13 23:11:15

Aiden sanded Carrie's floors. What's not to love.

I would also shag Harry. I always thought Steve was a bit clingy/needed.

WomanCalledAlice Thu 28-Feb-13 23:17:00

God she is so annoying, her and her love for extortionate shoes and "wacky" clothes.

Aiden did have a lucky escape. That episode when the went to Aidens little house out in the woods and she invited Big! Come on tae fuck! Who would do that! The bloke she cheated with! Jesus wept.

GregBishopsBottomBitch Thu 28-Feb-13 23:18:39

I loved Harry, he was so much nicer the Trey, when Charlotte said that she was unlikely to conceive, he just didnt care, Charlotte was more important to him.

KeatsiePie Algeria Thu 28-Feb-13 23:20:06

Come on tae fuck! Who would do that! The bloke she cheated with! Jesus wept.

Thanks for making me laugh really hard. Forgot about that. And then they got in a fight and she was sooo shocked and horrified.

WomanCalledAlice Thu 28-Feb-13 23:25:49

And then she tried to bake a cake and burnt herself because of the big scary squirrel looking at her through the window. Threw a big tantrum about having to spend time with Aiden in the country. What a hardship!

ifancyashandy Thu 28-Feb-13 23:29:34

Ha! The squirrel! She described it as 'a rat with a cuter outfit'. Idiot.

WallyBantersJunkBox Thu 28-Feb-13 23:35:37

I don't know about you ladies, but what solidified my relationship with "my man" was the moment he found out:
I had frittered away all my cash on shoes, cigarettes and cosmopolitan cocktails,
I didn't own one practical item of clothing
i was 30 and had one chair to sit on in my house and kept sweaters in my oven.
That I would kick off every time he forgot to display affection or ownership of me, resembling that of a "Love is...." cartoon.

<<tilts head and giggles>>

GregBishopsBottomBitch Thu 28-Feb-13 23:42:27

Wally you have so much in common with Carrie, its amazing, sniggers

TheCrackFox Thu 28-Feb-13 23:45:56

She even went into a big massive huff when Aiden bought her a new Apple laptop when her old laptop died and she had forgotten to back up any of her writing. She really was an ungrateful, self centred twat.

BumBiscuits Thu 28-Feb-13 23:46:39

I only watched because Big gave me the horn. I can think of lots of dirty things to do with him. Get that fix from Good Wife now.

BumBiscuits Thu 28-Feb-13 23:48:33

Ps yanbu about CB, I had a mate years back who was very like her, even looks wise. When I watched Carrie, I just saw my pal.

WomanCalledAlice Thu 28-Feb-13 23:48:42

TheCrackFox, that one really annoyed me, ungrateful cow.

KeatsiePie Algeria Fri 01-Mar-13 00:23:54

I do love the moment where she's yelling at Big and Aiden, as they're rolling around in the mud fighting, "YOU'RE MIDDLE-AGED!!"

Although a very pot/kettle moment as her own immaturity and selfishness created the whole situation.

allaflutter Fri 01-Mar-13 01:36:02

I LOVE Sarah JP, so I love the character too. She was so popular because she is extremely typical of NY, and to an extent London too, lots of whiney, needy, somewhat screwed-up single people there but she is NOT shallow and has excellent taste, so stands out as better than most! come on, she is a poetic soul, poets are often self absorbed, but she's not dull.
The seriers were actually very good as the u covered EVERY aspect of sexual and emotional relationship, no stone unturned as never before. The fact htat she's contradictory with men/independence is spot on about the majority of women on the cusp of 21st cen. It's a classic, wouldn't be so huge if it was bad.

allaflutter Fri 01-Mar-13 01:38:00

Woody Allen, who I also like, is very much in the same vein - it's NY kind of humour/neuroticism, but again there's soul in there with him.

MamaMumra Fri 01-Mar-13 04:41:27

Don't get me started on Woody Allen!

CheerfulYank Fri 01-Mar-13 04:58:12

Oh God I hate Woody Allen. Get a farking grip already, you mumbling perverted manchild.

I did love Steve on SATC. Total crush.

CheerfulYank Fri 01-Mar-13 04:59:02

But then again I am solidly Midwestern American and we don't do neuroses. grin

KeatsiePie Algeria Fri 01-Mar-13 06:48:26

Are you Cheerful? Where are you from? I'm from the South but am living in the Midwest for the first time. Everyone does seem very cheerful and practical!

WomanCalledAlice Fri 01-Mar-13 09:21:48

After reading this thread last night I went to bed and that episode when Miranda is trying to breast feed and Carrie gets all embarrassed because she seen her nipple. No support or compassion, just hopped out the door telling Miranda "you're a mum now". Cow!

mrsjay Fri 01-Mar-13 09:28:01

yanbu she is shallow vain and self absorbed and I cant see how many women can love her and be inspired cant stand her I did used to watch SATC though so i am a bit of a hyprocrite.

mrsjay Fri 01-Mar-13 09:29:45

oh and FWIW i thought she was a fool to let Aiden go I loved him stupid mr big I havnt seen the films did she marry him ?

Adversecamber Fri 01-Mar-13 09:33:05

I loved Harry, especially the episode when Charlotte tackled his tackle spread on her white couch.

I loved Mirandas relationship with her housekeeper, was it Magda?

mrsjay Fri 01-Mar-13 09:34:29

I loved Harry, especially the episode when Charlotte tackled his tackle spread on her white couch

you could see the colour drain from her face and im sure she wibbled a little grin

MsVestibule Fri 01-Mar-13 10:01:36

allaflutter I'm pleased I'm not the only one who thinks SATC isn't a crock o' shit! I do see that Carrie is needy and self obsessed but she obviously loved her friends. One of the things I like about it is that the characters are flawed and shows their weaknesses as well as their strengths; lots of characters in dramas are either black and white.

Bit odd though, that apart from Miranda's dead mum, none of them had any family confused. Or if they did, they weren't invited to any of their weddings.

GregBishopsBottomBitch Fri 01-Mar-13 10:28:11

Ms Charlotte had a brother, and Miranda had siblings, which she really didnt like.

oldraver Fri 01-Mar-13 10:31:41

She used to hold cigarettes....... between her teeth....and is a whiney arse

MoleyMick Fri 01-Mar-13 10:34:40

Agree re Carrie, always thought she was a selfish cow, and v v annoying.
I loved the episode where Miranda told Steve she loved him in the kitchen at her son's birthday party.
And where Harry asked Charlotte to marry him.
I do fancy Steve and Harry.

I watched the show and enjoyed it for years. Much of my enjoyment came from hating Carrie, the self centred fasion pony, she cantered around in Jimmy Choo's whinnying whingeing about men and her singular inability to empathise meant she never truly learned from her experiences.

The acters were very good and made in more watchable than it probably deserved.

LessMissAbs Fri 01-Mar-13 11:05:22

All the SATC women are completely obssessed with their love lifes and with relationships. Nothing else seems of more importance, everything is there in their lives to facilitate their relationships with men. Whom they would always give up everything for, if the man has enough money. They don't seem to have any interests in sports, the arts, music, etc., just men and relationships and their jobs.

Although Carrie I think comes across as harsh because she is in love with Big, and constantly frustrated/unhappy because for most of it she isn't with him. And she did try with Aidan but why should she "settle" for someone else when she is in love with another man? (although I'm not convinced that that wasn't because Big is rich, older and powerful...)

mrsjay Fri 01-Mar-13 11:31:28

The acters were very good and made in more watchable than it probably deserved.

I think that is probably why I watched it I did like it it was bubble gum telly really but god she was annoying, they are making or have made a prequel called the carrie diaries with a younger actress,

mrsjay Fri 01-Mar-13 11:32:06

But aiden was so lovely sigh

fromparistoberlin Fri 01-Mar-13 11:47:28

she was the most annoying

but I HEART SATC, maybe cos I was a 20-30 soemthing when it came out and it was a massive deal with me and my friends

My preferred is Miranda, followed by Samantha
Charlotte is too different to me
Carrie had her moment, but I lost major respect for her in the films x 2

she DID marry Mr Big, even though he SHAT all over her

Osmiornica Fri 01-Mar-13 11:51:20

"After reading this thread last night I went to bed and that episode when Miranda is trying to breast feed and Carrie gets all embarrassed because she seen her nipple. No support or compassion, just hopped out the door telling Miranda "you're a mum now". Cow!"

I hated that bit - just when Miranda gets the baby latched on and can finally concentrate on some adult conversation carrie pisses off out.

fromparistoberlin Fri 01-Mar-13 11:52:57

I cant actually watch the Carrie/Aidan bits, painful

painful like when George Galloway was a cat on CBB, butt clenching, CANT watch

valiumredhead Fri 01-Mar-13 11:54:30

What she did to Aiden was unforgivable!

Lighthousekeeping Fri 01-Mar-13 12:04:22

I hated Aiden. Quietly controlling. I loved Big for what he was. We've all been there. None of us married him though. That really got my back up.

It's being repeated from the beginning. I'm enjoying it but, I loved the earlier ones. Funky spunk, the one were Charlotte makes them go to a sex work shop, Samantha and her designer waxing. When you think of it really it was bang on trend or even trend setting. I think it was majorly because it was in New York. A huge,y influential place. I was a couple of years younger in London at the time and it was bloody tough bring single in a big city were everyone was transient. It still is.

I never was a Carrie fan but she was very necessary. I loved all their clothes appart from the adult rompers.

valiumredhead Fri 01-Mar-13 12:05:27

Aiden, controlling?

I will have to re watch through more adult eyes...

Ilovexmastime Fri 01-Mar-13 12:14:40

YADNBU, she is the reason I never really got into SATC.

Lighthousekeeping Fri 01-Mar-13 12:18:32

All the smoking business got my backup I suppose. And that voice he used to put on. Na he wasn't the man for me.

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Fri 01-Mar-13 12:24:39

I hated that she never learnt anything - shr was just as hopeless at the end as the beginning.

GetOrf Fri 01-Mar-13 12:38:45

Shame Is SATC was really good at first - first series where Carrie was a bit of a fuck up. Was a lot more true to life than the later series with the tiresome shoe obsession and where she seemed to live the life of Riley based on writing one tabloid column a week.

I think SJP is a really good actress - carrie is a ghastly character but somehow she made lots of people warm to her. There is a bit where Carrie gets stoned and roars with laughter, I think that's the funniest bit in the whole lot.

The way the series ended was a terrible cop out. Carrie should have smiled at big, tell him she didn't need or want him and end up alone in NYC. Because that was the main love affair running through - Carrie and New York. It would have been so nice to have a longstanding series end with the main character NOT having to be validated by a man.

And Aiden was a wanker. Made me want to blow fag smoke all over his supercilious face.

atthewelles Fri 01-Mar-13 12:44:48

YANBU. She was a silly woman who had never moved on from a high school mentality. Her life was all about obsessing over the latest fashion. parties and whining about men - not a good look when you're pushing forty.

germyrabbit Fri 01-Mar-13 12:45:42

oh i really liked the character myself and the series

just escapism

MarthasHarbour Fri 01-Mar-13 13:07:01

Loving this thread grin

I had forgotten the bit with Miranda breastfeeding sad

PopeBenedictsP45 Fri 01-Mar-13 13:47:27

"After reading this thread last night I went to bed and that episode when Miranda is trying to breast feed and Carrie gets all embarrassed because she seen her nipple."

Weird considering that Miranda is the one who fished out Carrie's diaphragm? Am I making that up?

<too lazy to google>

PopeBenedictsP45 Fri 01-Mar-13 13:49:13

Oh it was Samantha who extricated the diaphragm. Still, Carrie you have no right to be embarrassed by a nipple after that little episode.

WomanCalledAlice Fri 01-Mar-13 13:52:11

I can't remember the diaphragm one, thought I had seen them all!

akaemmafrost Fri 01-Mar-13 13:53:54

My hatred for her was cemented in the episode where Miranda has Brady Brady and the new born is handed immediately to Carrie after Mum has about three seconds with him and Dad gets nowhere near him! Its still ALL about Carrie. Mind you Steve always got my goat anyway with his silly, kids curly hairstyle and whispery voice.

Samantha is my favourite now I am older but used to be Charlotte, not sure what this says about me...........hmm

SkylarWhite Fri 01-Mar-13 13:55:32

I always found Charlotte the most annoying character. The obsession with weddings and princessy behaviour. I always thought 'why would the other three - who are quite funny and sassy - be friends with this spoilt little prude?'

PopeBenedictsP45 Fri 01-Mar-13 13:55:40

Woman - it's season 2, episode 6.

I remember reading afterwards that SJP had argued vehemently against the scene because she said that it would just never ever happen in real life.

WomanCalledAlice Fri 01-Mar-13 14:02:16

I definitely don't remember it. It does deem pretty far fetched. I can believe samantha doing it but just not Miranda for some reason.

The episode when Carrie got stoned did make me laugh. When the were all sitting in the cafe at then end and she said "dobby" and she got the giggles was funny. That was the one she got dumped on a post it wasn't it, haha!

akaemmafrost Fri 01-Mar-13 14:03:16

Actually Carrie was funny in that episode when she ranted at "Berger's" mates in the club grin.

WomanCalledAlice Fri 01-Mar-13 14:04:58

Yeah I liked that episode, and when fighting with those girls in the bar trying to score some weed. grin

atthewelles Fri 01-Mar-13 14:05:21

Miranda was my favourite character.

Charlotte was a whiney little princess.
Samantha was a complete slut.
And Carrie was a self obsessed PITA.

WomanCalledAlice Fri 01-Mar-13 14:06:33

Oh I don't anyone has mentioned Smith on this thread! 5 pages in. He was so sweet he would so get it

SkylarWhite Fri 01-Mar-13 14:09:26

The men were mostly grim in SATC. I did like the smoooooooth doctor who dated Miranda for a while. It seemed...u likely that she would have dumped him to get back with Steve grin

GetOrf Fri 01-Mar-13 14:09:50

The one which made me laugh when she got stoned was when she was hanging out with a young rich kid who lived in an amazing apartment overlooking Central Park, his mother came back and caught them smoking and she just pissed herself laughing.

There were some very funny bits. Where Samantha idly pondered out loud 'I am dating a man with the funkiest tasting spunk' and Charlotte just got up, slammed her chair under the table and stalked off without saying anything, and the rest just carried on talking after she left.

And when they were talking about rimming, they were all very happy to be recievers but NOT givers, apart from Charlottle, who said quite sanguinely that she rimmed her husband and shocked the others.

DevlinMaccabee Fri 01-Mar-13 14:11:37

I loved SATC but fine some of Carrie's scenes just too cringeworthy to watch.

One of the worst ones is the one where she is leaving the art museum and it's raining and she hides in the door way of that buidling along with that guy who clearly thinks she is nuts. "If this were a french film we would fall in love....blah, blah, blah"

The other bit that I can't watch is when Big is in hospital with heart problems and she visits him and does that stupid bursty out crying thing.

Does anybody else remember these?

DevlinMaccabee Fri 01-Mar-13 14:14:20

I loved that scene GetOrf, when they are throwing the KFC.

Funkiest tasting spunk makes me giggle too.

GetOrf Fri 01-Mar-13 14:16:39

I just found a link to the stoned Carrie on youtube but it's a terrible quality clip - but just watched it and pissed myself again. grin

MorrisZapp Fri 01-Mar-13 14:20:38

What about when Miranda was pg, and farted horrifically in a shoe shop? I liked that.

And when Miranda was pissed off for some reason on her way home and stormed into the lift and pressed the button. A little boy's mother said 'oh, he likes to do that' and Miranda said 'So do I' without so much as a smile. Brilliant.

GetOrf Fri 01-Mar-13 14:23:26

I loved Miranda when she was misanthropic like that. By far the character most like me.

ATJabberwocky Fri 01-Mar-13 14:25:21

I really like the SATC series, however I could not bear it their characters were my friends. Self-obsessed and fickle. YANBU to dislike them.

MorrisZapp Fri 01-Mar-13 14:25:39

And me smile

MorrisZapp Fri 01-Mar-13 14:28:07

Also, Carrie Bradshaw wasn't all bad. She was really good when Charlotte was dithering on her wedding day to Trey. 'You and me can just walk out of here right now sweetie'. She was a rock.

BOF Fri 01-Mar-13 14:29:09
MorrisZapp Fri 01-Mar-13 14:38:15

Brilliant link.

BOF Fri 01-Mar-13 14:39:18

I love the police officer grin

NicknameTaken Fri 01-Mar-13 14:45:28

You're a middle aged woman eating pot noodle in a fag stained bed sit. Get a friggin grip.

Thank you, Wally. That is all. Thank you.

cerealqueen Fri 01-Mar-13 15:00:54

YANBU. Carrie was the kind of woman who, if it came to it, would trash any friendship for the sake of a man, and I'm sure deep down Miranda knew that. Remember the bullshit bagels, when she bought Miranda bagels when she did her back in, but really wanted to talk about Aiden? And the time she was due to meet Miranda for a night out, and didn't turn up because she wanted to see Big? (the night she met Steve!)

I once told a good friend she reminded me of Carrie, despite having always said how much Carrie annoyed me. We haven't really got on since!

GetOrf Fri 01-Mar-13 15:03:18

I love that link. You have got to love Carrie when she laughs like that at saying 'doobey'

I don't know. She is an exasperating cow (Carrie) but I have got a soft spot for SJP.

CheerfulYank Fri 01-Mar-13 15:35:10

Minnesota Keatsie smile

Carrie actually reminds me of one of my best friends...and yes, she does annoy the shit out of me from time to time! She can be a nutbag. But like Carrie, she's very funny with moments of sweetness.

Remember when Charlotte has the mc and couldn't go to Brady's birthday at first? sad

ifancyashandy Fri 01-Mar-13 15:46:49

Oh God, I HATED Aiden. Still did when I watched the series a second time. Twatty McTwat.

anonacfr France Fri 01-Mar-13 16:02:17

She didn't meet Miranda because Big was cooking her veal.
She bailed on her friends when she started seeing the Russian too.

She got beyond annoying as the series progressed and by the end I could barely look at her. All these breathy licking her lips poses she was doing were unbearable. By the time she got to Paris and called Miranda after two days because she'd been to every museum 'like, twice' and was all bored I was ready to die.
I never got how clever and witty she was meant to be and yet her interests were herself, shoes and men. In that order.

I didn't even think Big was that bad TBH. Rewatching from the beginning he always made it clear that their relationship was casual. She was the one who stalked his ex wife, his mother at church, freaked out when she left stuff at his place as a test and he returned it etc etc. They were actually far better off as friends.

Miranda's hot doctor was the best guy in the show- gorgeous, considerate, romantic, really good with Brady and great in bed... What more could you want?

NicknameTaken Fri 01-Mar-13 16:06:31

YY to Miranda's hot doctor.

I didn't hate Aiden, but I thought they weren't right together, and I did like the part where Carrie tried on a wedding dress and came out in a rash. The relationship might look good to people on the outside, but if it doesn't feel right, then there's no point.

I have a bit of a "love to hate" relationship with Carrie, a bit like Liz Jones (good call, whoever spotted the resemblance!). She makes me feel better about my life choices. Although how the hell anyone can find shoes remotely interesting escapes me.

WomanCalledAlice Fri 01-Mar-13 16:16:24

Mirandas doctor boyfriend was HOT! Can't believe I forgot about him! He went a bit weird when Miranda dumped him though didn't he?!

NicknameTaken Fri 01-Mar-13 16:30:25

Yes, she went to his door and he was there with two young women being quite sleazy. I think he needed to be shown as less sympathetic to make the audience think it was a good thing for Miranda to go back to Steve.

I definitely need to rewatch. I think the ironic 'look how selfish Carrie is she doesn't realise she has caused all of this to happen' passed me by somewhat!

I bought them all on video and loved them all (bar a few episodes). Between ages 18-24ish I loved them, and Carrie was probably my favourite.

Now, I think Miranda much more likely to be my fave as I am more like her! Must rebuy...can't believe the DVD boxset is only £10 more than the single series video I bought!

I loved the series btw. The first film was so dire I didn't bother with the second!

Anyone remember the ep with Bradley Cooper? I remember thinking how revolting he was (looking wise) but now I DEFINITELY would!

anonacfr France Fri 01-Mar-13 16:54:39

I agree. Otherwise everyone would be all 'why the hell do you give up sexy Knicks doctor for a whiny guy who so didn't seem right for her'.
I also felt sorry for Steve's GF who was actually v sweet and v loving towards Brady too.

I never liked Steve and Miranda together. He's another guy who was better suited as a friend.

The only grown up relationship was between Harry and Charlotte.
I liked the way she told her friends they had great sex but she was embarrassed at being seen with him but then let go of her shallow ideas and realised what a good man he was.

And just to continue this thread all my myself grin the boxset is less than £40 on Amazon! I remember buying the boxset of season 4 videos for £40!

I like Steve and Miranda together. It reminds me of me and my husband - I'm a huge bitch and he is a sweetie always trying hard smile

anonacfr France Fri 01-Mar-13 16:56:17

Sorry lots of cross postings! I meant I agree with NicknameTaken

WomanCalledAlice Fri 01-Mar-13 16:57:12

I remember her meeting sexy doctor on the stairs when she was trying to avoid him. He started doing impressions of her having sex haha.

I always thought Carrie was irritating and self absorbed. And to be honest I didn't even think Big was that bad to her - he just didn't do what she wanted him to do, when she wanted it. Sheesh.

And the Carrie eating thing - it always looks crazy because in every single shot ever or her eating, no morsel is ever actually swallowed. Once you realise this it is actually really annoying, because you can see it is complete fake eating. As soon they yell cut SJP is spitting the food out and rinsing her mouth out with water in case she ate any calories.

mrsjay Fri 01-Mar-13 17:11:14

I always found Charlotte the most annoying character. The obsession with weddings and princessy behaviour. I always thought 'why would the other three - who are quite funny and sassy - be friends with this spoilt little prude?'

but she found her prince in the shape of a little fat bald jewish man I loved that remember when she was married to the wanker ewwww he was horrible

mrsjay Fri 01-Mar-13 17:12:20

And just to continue this thread all my myself the boxset is less than £40 on Amazon! I remember buying the boxset of season 4 videos for £40!

its on 5 star most nights for free and comedy central ( I think)

Is it mrsjay? shock How did I miss that?

mrsjay Fri 01-Mar-13 17:17:13

I am sure it is . or it used to be on late at night somewhere because i used to watch the odd episode here and there if I was up

Greythorne Fri 01-Mar-13 17:24:51

I think the women were horrible caricatures, written by someone who doesn't like women very much. It made them all very unlikable, esp Carrie.

Miranda is usually held up as the most normal but she could be very cold hearted and incredibly negative. Which is not necessarily bad, but it did not make her that likable.

But I think there was something about the way the programme handled sex and taboos that made it really watchable. I remember the first episode I watched was one where Carrie and Big have sex, then she does a fanjo fart afterwards and is utterly mortified, whilst he sits there looking like a smug bastard. I can remember thinking I have never, ever seen a programme that puts the reality of sex front and centre in this way. And that was very appealing.

There were some amazingly clever one liners, the city looked fantastic, they ate out for every meal, the clothes were astonishing....the worst thing about it was the four leads.

Wasn't it supposed to be just a normal fart? <mystified>

Actually I've just remembered why I initially liked it so much.

It's because I thought of myself as a Carrie and my then boyfriend as Big. Mainly because he was a complete cunt and I was always trying to live up to his expectations of me hmm

In no other way were we like them!

Yes a normal fart I think.

GregBishopsBottomBitch Fri 01-Mar-13 17:42:39

It was just a normal fart, she had underwear on at the time i

anonacfr France Fri 01-Mar-13 17:45:56

It was a normal fart. It was in the morning as Carrie was trying to look all alluring and sexy in bed.
I can't think of any real sexual taboos the show actually confronted. I remember the infamous female ejaculation scene caused quite a stir but looking back it feels dated.

Saying that I can rewatch it endlessly.

anonacfr France Fri 01-Mar-13 17:47:15

See I see it as Mr Big never living up to Carrie's expectations not the other way round.

expatinscotland Fri 01-Mar-13 17:50:11

She's a stuck up bitch.

CruCru Fri 01-Mar-13 17:53:03

Miranda was the only one who really ever experienced sexual rejection. She was also the most realistic - lawyer who works all the time to make ends meet. The rest seemed a bit vacuous.

Writehand Fri 01-Mar-13 17:56:37

I could never bear SATC. A bunch of grown up women whining like teenagers. They were all far too long in the tooth for the roles they played. About 20 years too old.

40 year old barflies, fluttering about weddings... They were the age to be divorced single parents, not just starting out dating. As Baresarkbunny says, Carrie reminds me of the ghastly Liz Jones.

Just a thought: is it because Liz Jones' sell by date is stamped on her bum that she hasn't noticed it?

akaemmafrost Fri 01-Mar-13 18:34:41

Agree about Big. He just wasn't that into her.

GetOrf Fri 01-Mar-13 18:42:50

I agree that the sexual honesty was very novel at the time.

I never saw Miranda as a hard bitch - I really warmed to her.

MrsShortfuse Fri 01-Mar-13 18:46:59

Miranda speaks with her mouth full and even when not speaking doesn't keep mouth closed when eating, YUK!

Anyway I love the programme. It cheers me up when I've had a shit day at work and I find a repeat on some sky channel.

Agree Carrie is PITA. Love the others even M, with the exception of the above issue.

GregBishopsBottomBitch Fri 01-Mar-13 18:50:17

I warmed to Miranda as she slowly accepted motherhood, and she freely admitted it was tough, but as Brady gets older you see her really take to the mother role quite well.

Samantha annoyed me in the film over Miranda's bikini area.

Greythorne Fri 01-Mar-13 18:50:35

And it did show women in the driving seat in sexual matters, especially Samantha, but not exclusively her.

Remember when Samantha let a guy who was warm and funny and interesting....but short? And she dyumped him. Or when she had great sex with a handsome, rich guy in his 70s, but went off him when she saw his wrinkly bottom?

That type of storyline where women were in control of their choices felt very new. At the same time, I remember ER which almost prided itself on having same sex relationships and inter-racial relationships that were supposed to be oh so innovative, but they always remained incredibly conventional.

Lighthousekeeping Fri 01-Mar-13 18:57:32

If you think Carrie Bradshaw is bad you need to see Hannah in Girls. I would have Carrie and her shoes ten times over.

akaemmafrost Fri 01-Mar-13 19:02:20

I love Hannah! grin

BOF Fri 01-Mar-13 19:35:31

I love Hannah too- at least her age gives her an excuse grin

Lighthousekeeping Fri 01-Mar-13 19:39:23

It's such a bad rip off. I tried to like her but its the most overrated show I've ever seen.

akaemmafrost Fri 01-Mar-13 19:41:39

I honestly don't think it's meant to be a rip off is it? It's the Anti Sex and the City!

Lighthousekeeping Fri 01-Mar-13 19:45:31

Oh it's so not anti SATC they sleep around like mad. Ones a writer, one works in a gallery, one is shagging a man that doesn't want her. It's influence is all over it. I really can't watch it anymore. When it's funny it's hysterical but the laughs are few and far between.

ChocolateCakePlease Fri 01-Mar-13 19:50:12

hermioneweasley i LOVED Ally McBeal! grin

I loved SATS so much but looking back and watching old episodes makes me realise how different my generation are from theirs and some of the things i thought were great when watching it seem either kind of sad now or just pathetic.

They always moaned (except Samanthawink) about finding the right man, "the one," then when did find one they moaned and moaned about it!

Like Carrie moaned when was with BIG in series 1 & 2 because he wouldn't commit to her, then she found Aiden in series 3 and moaned he was too available hmm and wasn't content at a great relationship so threw it away.

I am aware this is not real lifegrin

ChocolateCakePlease Fri 01-Mar-13 19:51:20

FFS Satc NOT Satsblush

Hassled Fri 01-Mar-13 19:53:36

When it was on, as in when it was exciting new telly, SATC was the highlight of my television week. I loved it.

Now I see episodes and think "you bunch of spoilt, narcissistic cows". Only Steve was ever nice. It's gutting, really. They were my best mates, once upon a time.

ChocolateCakePlease Fri 01-Mar-13 20:47:12

One thing i thought Carrie was bitch over was when she dated Aiden the 2nd time around and she insisted on continuing her friendship with big and made Aiden out to be the asshole for not liking it. As if Aiden would be happy she is still friends with the man she cheated on him with. She evn told him he could come up to Aidens country house and told Aiden it was ok because Big was in need and she was his friend bullshit - then they had a fight in the mud!

Imagine if Aiden had cheated on her with his ex then got back together with Carrie a year later and insisted he still be friends with the woman he cheated on her with! Carrie would moan like a bitch!

anonacfr France Fri 01-Mar-13 22:50:11

Worse thing about Carrie? The way she pulls a pleading/earnest ace while clutching her hands to her chest. Who does that????

Tolly81 Fri 01-Mar-13 23:00:37

YANBU, I'm with you she is so annoying. Anon - I'd actually forgotten that and you're right, it is massively annoying. Get those massive veiny man hands away from your scrawny chicken neck and visible ribs and stop whining on about how Big won't let you move in! Yuck.

anonacfr France Fri 01-Mar-13 23:21:07

grin Worse was the whole 'you have to forgive me' speech to Aidan. I bet she probably thought it was great acting.

akaemmafrost Fri 01-Mar-13 23:31:34

If I was Aiden "I would have said "actually no I don't, now fuck off and don't fall off your Blahniks as you go! Oh and I DID shag that girl you saw me with in the bar, oh and your mate Samantha too!"

Wishfulmakeupping Sat 02-Mar-13 07:01:14

She was a total bitch to Aiden- he was too good for her anyway. The episode at the cabin makes me want to punch her selfish cow.
Miranda is my fave especially later on the series i don't count the films

BalletCrystal Sun 03-Mar-13 20:22:23

I just watched the SJP interview with Jonathan Ross and yes she was actually shocked to hear Carrie described as needy.

They also talked about Aidan and SJP said "yes but wasn't she nice to him?"

hmm what?!

If I came on here and said I was dating a nice guy but I cheated on him with my ex. Then we got back together and he selfishly made me go to his place in the country and I had to invite my ex too because we're just friends now.

My boyfriend then proposed to me and bought my apartment and the one next door so we could combine the two. But then I realised he wasn't the one so I broke up with him.

Now I know I might be being unreasonable but ... I was still nice to him wasn't I?? grin

anonacfr France Mon 04-Mar-13 11:49:03

Apparently SJP got more and more input in the character of Carrie as the series went on.
So all the posing, clutching her chest with her veiny hands and licking her lips 'seductively' were all her.
As well as acting like an OTT teenager with men (remember when she fainted with the Russian?) and calling her 40 something friends 'gals'. Yuck.
