To tell you how to spend LESS time on Mumsnet?

(121 Posts)
CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 21:26:19

Have been feeling less than motivated at work recently, due to bonkers boss, impossible targets and the fact that I am working notice before starting a new job soon.

The temptation to sit on Mumsnet during working hours has the potential to get me into serious trouble.

Have recently discovered focalfilter which lets you block specific sites for specific amounts of time, e.g. 4 hours.

If only I had known about this when studying for my degree

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 22-Feb-13 21:49:33

ChewinTheFat Fri 22-Feb-13 21:50:31

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 21:51:48

I'm not selling something, promise! Just thought I would give all the other procrastinators a helpful hint.

I'll go now...

StickEmWithThePointyEnd Fri 22-Feb-13 21:52:28

Mystery abounds.

Sparklingbrook Fri 22-Feb-13 21:52:34

Come on Olivia give us a small clue.

AgentZigzag Fri 22-Feb-13 21:53:00

I thought it was quite a good website going on what some posters say about the MN Habit grin

stifnstav Fri 22-Feb-13 21:54:20

Was it bumsex related?

Oomph Fri 22-Feb-13 21:54:30

StickEmWithThePointyEnd Fri 22-Feb-13 21:54:48

PM please!

Quick op, quick!

AgentZigzag Fri 22-Feb-13 21:55:07

I even sent a link to it to DH to elbow him into cutting down on his car porn forum.

Can't see why it's been deleted though.

StickEmWithThePointyEnd Fri 22-Feb-13 21:55:49

What is it AgentZigZag?

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 21:56:04

Waiting for explanation from MNHQ.

It wasn't controversial, honest, or so I thought!

tigerdriverII Fri 22-Feb-13 21:56:06

Eh?

Agent, help?

Hullygully Fri 22-Feb-13 21:56:26

RedHotRudieParts Fri 22-Feb-13 21:56:31

Holy hell is that some sort of deletion record ??! shock

RudolphLovesoftplay Fri 22-Feb-13 21:56:53

Come on, not fair!!

I neeeeed to know!

It was a link to a website that lets you put a limit on the amount of time per day you spend on various sites. Bit pointless really, with the computer having an off switch and all.

FamiliesShareGerms Fri 22-Feb-13 21:57:04

Any suggestions, anyone...?

Floweryhat Fri 22-Feb-13 21:57:15

Love it grin

Hullygully Fri 22-Feb-13 21:58:04

Olivia she make the joke

sittinginthesun Fri 22-Feb-13 21:58:06

mrscog Fri 22-Feb-13 21:58:42

I thought it was going to be a member of the newly formed mn guild on wow!

kim147 Fri 22-Feb-13 21:59:43

Spend less time and MNHQ get less revenue grin

They don't want us to know.

Jacksmania Fri 22-Feb-13 22:00:08

PM! PM! PM!!!

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 22:00:42

Bluelightsandsirens Fri 22-Feb-13 22:01:21

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 22:01:33

I can't pm everyone!

Hullygully Fri 22-Feb-13 22:02:17

are you sure?

AgentZigzag Fri 22-Feb-13 22:02:31

Can't understand a thread without an OP though, it's a bit like Greggs without pastry.

Bobyan Fri 22-Feb-13 22:03:30

Was the suggestion Net mums!?!

"It was a link to a website that lets you put a limit on the amount of time per day you spend on various sites. Bit pointless really, with the computer having an off switch and all."

Yes, but when you're at work and the computer has to be on, the temptation to browse Mumsnet can be too strong for weak willed procrastinators like me...

badtemperedaldbitch Fri 22-Feb-13 22:04:27

pm me.... I was deleted for telling the truth... without warning or explanation!

AgentZigzag Fri 22-Feb-13 22:04:40

No Bob, that would have the opposite effect grin

Oscarandelliesmum Fri 22-Feb-13 22:04:56

grin Net mums

ShipwreckedAndComatose Fri 22-Feb-13 22:05:37

This is the best op ever!

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 22:06:16

I thought it would be useful for parents who wanted to restrict e.g. Facebook when kids were supposed to be using the computer for homework rather than going through the faff of turning off the wifi.

AgentZigzag Fri 22-Feb-13 22:07:36

That's not a bad use for it Cheddar.

NewYearNewBoo Fri 22-Feb-13 22:08:05

Ooh that Olivia has the big red button tonight and she ain't afraid to use it!! Love it!!

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 22:09:29

Hullygully

"really cheddar?

are you sure?"

I might regret this, but I will respond to pm's , although may take a while as I have a chicken pox-y DD and it's nearly my bed time.

Olivia, it would be quicker for you to restore my OP smile

It would be so annoying if a thread just started kicking off and you only had one minute of time left though, there is a lot to be said for being weak willed sometimes grin

snowtimelikethepresent Fri 22-Feb-13 22:09:44

If that's what your OP was Gorgeous (i.e a link to a website telling you how to curb online time) I am at a loss as to how it breaks talk guidelines, unless it is yet another example of the thought police at MNHQ making up rules as they go along.

Of course this may be their idea of a little joke....

Indith Fri 22-Feb-13 22:10:39

oh can someone pm me the link please? about to start degree, have no willpower but don't want to go cold turkey as you lot are too lovely. trouble with modern learning, you tend to need internet!

CharlotteBronteSaurus Fri 22-Feb-13 22:13:01

if it's the same tool i used, it's not foolproof
in desperation I downloaded a browser, which allowed me back on my <self-imposed> banned sites.

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 22-Feb-13 22:13:32

Have reinstated the OP - was afraid twas cheeky SPAM (!)

AgentZigzag Fri 22-Feb-13 22:13:36

Well, nothing against your thread Cheddar, but they've got an extra 50 odd posts, it's Olivias gin night and she was double dared good business.

WorraLiberty Fri 22-Feb-13 22:14:08

<scribbles out bits in last post a bit more>

happyjustobeme Fri 22-Feb-13 22:15:43

Am i the only one who can see the OP? She says to use focalfilter to limit the time spent.

TuftyFinch Fri 22-Feb-13 22:16:06

It's snowing.

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 22:16:33

Will try again and see if it is deleted:

focalfilter

You set a period of time during which you cannot access named websites.

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 22:18:10

To dislike something immensely. E.g.

That. Fair nuff, though it was struck through.

Olivia has took agin me tonight

Truly, I haven't. I reinstated your post! Glad you are feeling badass though

But to be clear strikethrough is for witticisms not veiling insults. Thanks

Bluelightsandsirens Fri 22-Feb-13 22:58:42

Weird thread

drjohnsonscat Fri 22-Feb-13 22:59:52

making salt dough with your dc will take your mind off MN for a considerable length of time, especially if you let them paint the salt dough models afterwards, for added distraction place trays of poster paint all over the floor and adopt two dogs, to be certain to get things just right one of the dogs should be white, the other should be super fast [wibble]

D0in agree, but when you're sitting in an office in front of a computer with zero motivation or interest, Mumsnet just cries out to be browsed. Next thing, it's 5 pm and nothing has been done...

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen Fri 22-Feb-13 23:12:55

Olivia's always Mnetting at work and he manages not to get fired.

AgentZigzag Fri 22-Feb-13 23:13:20

Kitten block is really good Sunny if you want to block the Daily Stale.

You can only download it if you're not on benefits and can prove your UK citizenship for the last six generations.

CheddarGorgeous Fri 22-Feb-13 23:13:30

All I need now is my first Mumsnet biscuit and I will have the full set of MN battle trophies...

<hopeful>

bedmonster Fri 22-Feb-13 23:13:33

Bluelightsandsirens Fri 22-Feb-13 23:38:57

I can't remember how to do the long blank posts <wails>

Blank posts makes Gin evaporate bed and that is why ^ don't like them.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen Fri 22-Feb-13 23:39:00

Because people get a little carried away and then massive or repeated blank posts make things go glitchy and upset tech.

Bluelightsandsirens Fri 22-Feb-13 23:40:46

I like my answer better

but I have had wine so technically could be wrong

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen Fri 22-Feb-13 23:43:29

Someone should find whoever kicked of all this blank posting nonsense and should have a word with them...

Bluelightsandsirens Fri 22-Feb-13 23:48:13

I'm sure Olivia MNHQ/tech will have a grip on it now, I mean it can't be that much of a big deal - I don't remember it ever causing massive ishoos.

If that is not the case maybe some wanted posters should be made?

See, I keep forgetting how to do the wretched things because Tech keep moving the goalposts, and, when I do a search, the 'how to' doesn't seem to be findable.
