to think Prometheus was a rubbish film?

The first tiny bit where the Earth is seeded with DNA was the best bit, and perhaps, the last few seconds, where the Alien of good films is born, was OK. Everything in between was crap.

So glad I only paid a couple of quid to borrow the DVD, instead of paying through the nose for the cinema as dh and I had intended to do.

Ridley Scot, you should be ashamed. ASHAMED. I am very cross with you, and I shall think twice before I bother with another film from you.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme Thu 21-Feb-13 23:26:22

Yep, it was crap. A few special effects, a bit of drama and then a big crash at the end. I thought Prometheus was going to be some big plot. Turns out it was the name of the ship. Which crashed. confused

rodandtheemu Thu 21-Feb-13 23:27:26

It was poop!

sarahbean123 Thu 21-Feb-13 23:27:31

YANBU. I slept through 99% of it, it was awful.

leonardofquirm Thu 21-Feb-13 23:32:52

I slept though a lot too. It was disappointing.

AnyFucker Thu 21-Feb-13 23:34:32

yep, crap

the hype was most unfulfilling

It looked good and that's as far as the positives go. I don't understand how anyone could rave about it.

thezebrawearspurple Thu 21-Feb-13 23:40:20

yabu, it was great!

FloatyFlo Thu 21-Feb-13 23:42:18

Freaked me out. That big blue humanoid. He wasn't very nice was he!! I couldn't sleep for fear of him hiding under my bed.

Cheddars Thu 21-Feb-13 23:44:13

It made no sense at all. A group of horrible people went to a planet. Why did they all hate each other? Why did she hate her father? Why did the robot want everyone else to die?

and breathe god I hated that film

OxfordBags Thu 21-Feb-13 23:50:59

It was a steaming bag of shite. Within the first 10 mins, I guessed the plot and who would die when and how and I was 90% right.

SPOILER ALERT

Also, can we talk about having a c-section without anaesthetic and then promptly doing all sorts of terrifying hardcore heroics? Erm, right...

(Also, the machine cut the baby alien's umbilical cord, which means there must've been a placenta, but no placenta was removed. Not that leaving it in could kill her or anything, fuxache.)

Jux Fri 22-Feb-13 00:38:39

OxfordBags, there were so many ridiculous things like that that it's impossible to list them.

I was annoyed within 15 minutes, and then just waiting for it to end, hoping that it wasn't going to be as bad as it seemed, that there would turn out to have a redeeming feature. Alas!

Does no one in the film industry read books? They could try Asher, Hamilton, Banks, oh, there's loads of them.

Were the unknown actors deliberate, or was it that no good ones would touch it? grin

Naysa Fri 22-Feb-13 00:51:10

I went to see it. In 3D sad first 3D movie I'd ever been to see aswell.

The glasses hurt my nose so I took them off and got a headache because without them the film was slightly out of focus.

I had huge expectations but I was disappointed. The highlight of that trip was pic n mix angry

Jux Fri 22-Feb-13 01:29:33

Commiserations to you, Naysa.

Whitewineformeplease Fri 22-Feb-13 01:37:13

I am a huge, HUGE Alien/Aliens fan, and was sooo excited about this film. It came out the week I had DD, so didn't get to see it. Got the DVD for Christmas after dropping massive hints, settled down with wine, 3D glasses, everything, and was so pissed off! How, how, did Ridley Scott manage to fuck this up so badly? It's so boring, and nothing makes sense! Can't blame Michael Fassbender though, he is amazing and wonderful and will excuse him being involved in this massive piece of poo. Heard there's going to be a sequel...

anonymosity Fri 22-Feb-13 02:24:54

YANBU I thought it was utter, mindless PANTS.

SamuelWestsMistress Fri 22-Feb-13 05:21:59

I thought it was ace! DH would agree with the rest of you though.

Tee2072 Fri 22-Feb-13 05:29:40

My first words upon its completion were "I want my 2 hours back."

Total and other crap.

Fairylea Fri 22-Feb-13 05:37:06

I enjoyed it !

PessaryPam Fri 22-Feb-13 06:02:21

It was totally confusing crap.

chutneypig Fri 22-Feb-13 06:36:43

I wasn't impressed at all. Triumph of style over substance.

Stinkyminkymoo Fri 22-Feb-13 07:37:59

YANBU. it was utter, utter shite. I do not get why people rave about it.

Cloud Atlas is another. I could not understand it and I fell asleep 1/2 way through, total waste of money!

oxford that's exactly what I thought!! No way would she be able to run round with a staples stomach the shock of the op alone would have killed her.

And then there was the fact they forgot about all the other people. What happened to them?.....

Eebahgum Fri 22-Feb-13 07:49:41

I thought it was pants. Dp however liked it so much at the cinema he has since treated himself to the DVD.

YouTheCat Fri 22-Feb-13 10:19:41

I thought it was brilliant! I didn't think the beginning was about planting dna on earth. I thought it was about destroying the planet that the explorers went to visit.

Squitten Fri 22-Feb-13 10:21:39

We're big fans of the Alien films but we thought it was utter tosh. If it hadn't been for Michael Fassbender's general creepy awesomeness there would have been nothing good in it at all.

TheSmallPrint Fri 22-Feb-13 10:22:13

No Good actors??? Excuuuuuuuuuse me I think you'll find that Michael Fassbender is bloody gorgeous noramally a most excellent actor as is Idris Elba. But the film was shit.

OxfordBags Fri 22-Feb-13 10:23:41

And how blatantly did they signal a sequel by having Guy Pierce play the old geezer? If there aren't going to be future flashbacks to his youth, why not use an actual elderly actor?!

TheSmallPrint Fri 22-Feb-13 10:25:17

yum

GregBishopsBottomBitch Fri 22-Feb-13 10:25:45

I havent seen it, been told it was shit, even the pant wettingly handsome Michael Fassbender cant make me watch it.

It was complete and utter shite.

No plot, terrible script, completely nonsensical behaviour from the characters and no attempts made to explain any of it.

Ridley Scott needs a good talking to angry

OxfordBags Fri 22-Feb-13 10:26:47

TheSmallPrint, everyone in it is a good actor, especially Fassbender, I concur. But apart from him, they were mostly crap in it, especially Charlize Theron. It's not their fault; you can't put lipstick on a pig!

GregBishopsBottomBitch Fri 22-Feb-13 10:27:00

Small Im glad im not the only one who finds Michael Fassbender edible, oh the things i'd do to him.

TheSmallPrint Fri 22-Feb-13 10:28:04

I'd watch any old shite that Fassy was in tbh! Greg, you have excellent taste my friend! grin

GregBishopsBottomBitch Fri 22-Feb-13 10:29:32

Small It was Xmen that did it, him speaking german.....i will stop now.

TheSmallPrint Fri 22-Feb-13 10:31:16

He is very edible in that I agree <fans self>.

BelfastBloke Fri 22-Feb-13 10:33:12

What do you mean, "were the unknown actors deliberate?"

Which actors didn't you know? Pretty good, experienced cast, I'd've said, from a decent range of interesting films.

RedwingOnFire Fri 22-Feb-13 10:33:27

It was angry-makingly ridiculous!!

I love this Honest Trailer of it! Makes me laugh!!

RedwingOnFire Fri 22-Feb-13 10:35:07

Obviously the above link contains all the spoilers!

DadOnIce Fri 22-Feb-13 10:36:14

You may enjoy this - Prometheus title sequence as if it was a 90s TV show!

GregBishopsBottomBitch Fri 22-Feb-13 10:39:45

Red That was hilarious, and the reason i'll never watch it, i noticed they didnt say much about Fassie.

ZolaBuddleia Fri 22-Feb-13 10:40:01

Lots of good actors in a shitty script. Where did the bag come from to put Fassbender's head in? When the big thing was falling down why didn't Noomi Rapace just run 10 feet to the side?

Pile o shite.

TheSmallPrint Fri 22-Feb-13 10:41:28

That honest trailer is hilarious! grin

RedwingOnFire Fri 22-Feb-13 10:42:14

DadOnIce wow! That's cool! I want to watch THAT show!!

FrameyMcFrame Fri 22-Feb-13 10:43:39

Oh dear I loved it but seem to be in the minority here...

I'm a sucker for any film where the lead is a strong woman though, and her performance was amazing.

Trills Fri 22-Feb-13 10:45:49

Did you know that Mumsnet has a Movie reviews section? smile

YANBU, because it is never unreasonable to dislike a film.

I disagree, but that doesn't make it unreasonable.

MoreBeta Fri 22-Feb-13 10:52:45

These sort of films are so formulaic but the studios make them because they are a low risk investment. It is about business not art.

They pick a genre that is popular with the public, hire a great director, hire a roster of great actors, push the film through their worldwide marketing distribution machine and they make some money. They also inevitably make a bad film.

Ridley Scott did a fantastic job with Blade Runner but based on fabulous classic SciFi book (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - which may just be the best or worst ever book title).

Its easy to see why he was hired for the job but I woudl not blame him or the actors.

BelfastBloke Fri 22-Feb-13 11:01:57

"*TrillianAstra*: Guard of the Concept of Unreasonableness."

It's good to know she's out there, policing AIBU for all us pedants.

Trills Fri 22-Feb-13 11:08:59

Hi BB, haven't seen you for aaaages.

Is it the science fiction that brings you out?

Moominsarehippos Fri 22-Feb-13 11:11:01

I would tell you but I fell asleep. I usually fall asleep though. I even fell asleep during the last Bond film in the cinema with a full audience of shriekers.

BelfastBloke Fri 22-Feb-13 11:16:13

'Spose it is the sic-fi that brings me out, Trills. Not on MN quite as much as I used to be. You know us SAHMs. A woman's work is never done.

ZolaBuddleia Fri 22-Feb-13 11:23:55

And I am blaming Ridley Scott, he's in charge of the script!

Was dire. I particularly like it when the scientist discovers a new creature previously unknown to science and what does he do ? He pokes it. He fucking pokes it. Poor thing i dont blame it for killing him one bit.

YouTheCat Fri 22-Feb-13 11:29:21

That's geologists for you. More used to rocks. grin

MoreBeta Fri 22-Feb-13 11:34:24

Trills - yes its the SciFi that brings me out. confused

I used to read Asimov non stop when I was a teenager. I can bore for Britain on the parallels between Clasical Greek lierature and SciFi. I like thoughtful SciFi though not 'shotem up' Star Wars type stuff. grin

Now you can find me on MN cooking threads most days though.

And dont even start me on the "evolution" they talked about. They have the same DNA as us do they ? [Hmm]. No mention of any other form of life and how thats related to us in there at all.

forgetmenots Fri 22-Feb-13 11:37:35

The gorgeous Fassbender is brilliant in it - honestly a great performance. Theron (who I usually love) was ok, Elba didn't have enough to do and Rapace was pretty good. Acting wasn't the issue.

I didn't hate it at all, thought it was good silly fun, but I'm not a huge sci-fi fan and so maybe went in with different expectations?

Trills Fri 22-Feb-13 11:39:12

Poking it worked in Independence Day

Did it ? I dont remember that ! What happened ?

MoreBeta Fri 22-Feb-13 11:42:13

There is a sequel planned.

"During the March 17, 2012 WonderCon convention, Scott said that the film leaves many questions unanswered, and that these could be answered in a sequel."

Trills Fri 22-Feb-13 11:45:50

Will Smith punched an alien, dragged it back, they cut it open and took off it;s biomechanical outer layer, then it woke up and wrapped its tentacles round Data's neck and told the president that it wanted them all to die.

YouTheCat Fri 22-Feb-13 11:48:24

It was a bit more than a poke then? grin

I liked that Prometheus left a lot of questions unanswered and gave me scope to speculate and think.

Ah. Yes I do remember that. Ick.

Jux Fri 22-Feb-13 11:51:36

Independence Day was a fabulous spoof! Very silly fun.

Prometheus wasn't. I don't care who was in it, the female lead was shit and brought down everyone else's performances. At every event I was thinking "but....." - scientists don't do that etc., run to the side you twat, and so on. Impossible to suspend disbelief. Bad make up on the old geezer, so I just wanted to scrub his face every time I saw him and tell him to stand up straight (reminded me of the vile Tom Cruse being badly old in something or other).

I don't care how good any of the actors usually are; in this, they weren't.

MoreBeta Fri 22-Feb-13 12:02:49

The problem is that in a film like Prometheus I don't actually care about what happens to the characters.

On the other hand, in 2001 Space Odyssey in that moment where you realise Hal 9000 (the malevolent computer) is actually 'lying' is where you are screaming at the astronauts to get the hell out of there. You care - a lot!

In Blade Runner I found myself with a massive lump in my throat when the evil replicant Roy (Rutger Hauer) fights Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) but saves him from falling and then gives an epic monologue about his life just before his life terminates.

" I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears...in rain. Time to die."

You want to shout 'Nooooo don't die, there is good in you, you have humanity. Then at the end of the film where you Rick and Rachel (Sean Young) driving together and you know that Deckard knows there is a possibility of goodness, love and humanity in everything and we all die in the end anyway.

<wails at the epic tradgedy of it all>

Trills Fri 22-Feb-13 12:08:33

Run to the side you twat

I want to say that a lot.

TV Tropes knows it too

KirstyoffEastenders Fri 22-Feb-13 12:13:31

YABU it is a very good sci fi film. Some slightly dodgy dialogue and some character inconsistency but the ideas and lead performaces (particularly Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender) were fantastic, imo. Can't wait to see the sequel.

Trills Fri 22-Feb-13 12:15:41

I thought it was OK.

Not amazing.

Not terrible.

Not a waste of 2 hours of my life.

crazycanuck Fri 22-Feb-13 12:22:24

MoreBeta grin I love that quote! (drags Bladerunner off shelf for re-watch tonight...)

Watched this last weekend and I agree with the OP. also, Oxford, your post about the whole c-section bit made me chuckle as I was thinking 'wtf?!' when she was running around and throwing herself about (especially having had a second one myself fairly recently and I could barely haul myself to the bathroom).

Spooky, DH and I were saying about watching Blade Runner tonight. Now that is a film.....

clickityclackity Fri 22-Feb-13 12:34:35

It was absolutely horrible, and made no sense whatsoever. Plot seemed like it was cobbled together as it went along. It stayed in my head for days. £40 quid wasted at Imax. I will never watch it again or the sequel.

MomaP Fri 22-Feb-13 12:44:11

I also agree!!

I didn't enjoy it at all.

BegoniaBampot Fri 22-Feb-13 12:51:49

enjoyed it though it had so much to live up to. loved the start, the visuals, fassbender but it did lose it a bit in the middle as though they weren't sure where to go. still looking forward to the sequal.

Jux Fri 22-Feb-13 13:10:07

Clickityclackety, that's exactly what we thought. 2 or 3 script writers, each with a bit of a plot who never meet. Someone thinks "there's enough material here for a whole film" and thus the Child of Darkness is born.

Also, dh speculates that perhaps Mr Scott was given a huuuuge amount of money for the use of his name, but never actually went near it himself.

YANBU snore

Jux Fri 22-Feb-13 13:19:14

How can someone playing an android give a great performance? They have no emotions. IMO, Data in Star Trek did better.

forgetmenots Fri 22-Feb-13 14:22:41

Ah now YABU - very difficult to play without emotion (pretending to be an android, pretending to be a human, I mean).

Anyway. YANBU for hating it, it's your opinion, would really hope threads like this may draw more attention to the sadly underused movie reviews threads smile (not that I'm expecting to get to the cinema much soon...!)

Jux Fri 22-Feb-13 16:35:04

I don't know, forgetmenots, being wooden seems to be fairly easy for a lot of actors......

gordyslovesheep Fri 22-Feb-13 21:36:23

it was dull - I saw it at the pictures <roll eyes>

but today I attempted to watch something called Battleship - OMG it made Prometheus seem like a work of genius - it was awful - I managed just over an hour before giving up

GregBishopsBottomBitch Fri 22-Feb-13 22:00:09

Forget She has that seem annoying look in every bloody film, and why does she always seem like she needs a bath.

MoreBeta Fri 22-Feb-13 22:06:12

gordy - my DSs dragged me to Battleship. If they hadn't have been there I would have walked out.

I gave my DSs a long talk about US propoganda films afterwards.

echt Fri 22-Feb-13 22:06:31

It's cack of the highest order.

There IS one good bit, though it's very slight. It's when Idris Elba calls up the 3-D schematic of the structure everyone's running around inside. He's doing an American accent up until the point when he says "Enlarge that" which is pure Luther, his real, East End accent.

Mimishimi Fri 22-Feb-13 22:13:31

My husband loved it and bought the movie online. I liked the first bit but thought the rest of it was completely boring and disappointing.
