[childish snort]

Imagine living in Penistone grin

bigTillyMint Wed 13-Feb-13 19:13:29

I've never thought about it like that as it's pronounced Penny-ston!

Bunbaker Wed 13-Feb-13 19:14:15

It is pronounced Pennyston

gordyslovesheep Wed 13-Feb-13 19:14:48

my mate just came back from a holiday in Peniscola - oh how we laughed

TaggieCampbellBlack Wed 13-Feb-13 19:16:00

Sorry blush

Saw it in a book and been chuckling ever since.

shrimponastick Wed 13-Feb-13 19:16:39

I live near penistone, and the Snigger factor had never crossed my mind until an out of town boyfriend brought it up.

If you are local it is penny stun.

No peeeenis involved. ;)

Bunbaker Wed 13-Feb-13 19:17:57

Blimey. Don't you lot live sheltered lives. Even before living in South Yorkshire I have always know how it was pronounced, so felt no need to snigger.

What about Pratt's Bottom?

INeedThatForkOff Wed 13-Feb-13 19:18:01

Penny-ston is just as amusing as I thought penis was pronounced pennis until I was about 10.

Bunbaker Wed 13-Feb-13 19:18:26

shrimp so do I.

TaggieCampbellBlack Wed 13-Feb-13 19:18:39

Is it nice? I'd like to go. Just so I can send a postcard grin.

ShellyBoobs Wed 13-Feb-13 19:19:14

I drive past Penistone a few times a week.

I'm another who never thought of it being funny as it's not pronounced 'penis tone'.

shrimponastick Wed 13-Feb-13 19:19:57

It's only a village, I don't know if they have postcards... But you never know?8

I used to live near Fingringhoe <snurk>

Bunbaker Wed 13-Feb-13 19:20:27

I like it. It's a friendly little market town that has a brilliant agricultural show every September.

You are very childish.

ShellyBoobs Wed 13-Feb-13 19:21:45

Penistone is ok, Taggie.

There's not a lot there but it has a lovely little old cinema which has intervals in the films and sells alcohol. grin

TaggieCampbellBlack Wed 13-Feb-13 19:21:50

Oh bullet. Another great name.

I'm thinking I could do a tour of amusingly named places.

In Newfoundland we have Pothead, Dildo, Conception Bay, Nick's Nose Bay, Father Duffy's Well, Come By Chance and Blow Me Down. smile

Kleptronic Wed 13-Feb-13 19:25:09

I never gave Clitheroe a thought until a southerner I knew noticed and almost choked to death on her own mirth.

I love the Paramount Shelly. Went to the panto there the other week and had a great time.

I moved to Penistone when I got married. It's awesome! wink

wonkylegs Wed 13-Feb-13 19:27:51

My DH chuckles about this every time we drive past the sign, its been about 20yrs
His mates family live there

ShellyBoobs Wed 13-Feb-13 19:28:49

Oh I didn't know they did panto there, Bun.

Was there booze, too?

MrsGeologist Wed 13-Feb-13 19:38:03

PILs live near Nob End.

Drizzleit Wed 13-Feb-13 19:39:43

There's postcards I'll send you one Taggie! It's a lovely place to live and fun to spell

It really is lovely. I love living here.

pluCaChange Wed 13-Feb-13 20:05:23

Interesting thing about Brest: there are two of them (of course!), on opposite sides of Europe.

There's a Clitsome view not too far from here

Oh and Turkey Cock Lane was close to where I used to live too!

PrincessUnderpaid Wed 13-Feb-13 20:47:58

Upperthong and Netherthong never fail to raise a grin, there is also a Thongsbridge. Slightly obsessive skimpy underwear lovers or just VPL haters? Quite geographically close to Penistone too.

maddening Wed 13-Feb-13 20:49:07

We chuckle when we pass clit heroe on the motorway

Numberlock Wed 13-Feb-13 20:51:23

Not forgetting the singer CeCe Peniston - lol x 10,000

Drizzleit Wed 13-Feb-13 21:06:36

Henrietta let's start a Penistone appreciation thread! Thunderbridge always makes me laugh as well, though I'm not quite sure why grin

we always snigger at Peover in Cheshire (prn Peever, unfortunately grin)

MarianMaudsley Wed 13-Feb-13 21:20:05

i regularly visit a patient who lives on Penistone Avenue
it's been 2 years now, and i still snurk every time i pass the street sign.

i quite liked working near Cock Lane as well. Made me chuckle that it was adjacent to Back Passage

MikeOxardAndWellard Wed 13-Feb-13 21:21:25

Hehehe Peeeeeeeeeenis-stone. <childish>

IvorWindybottom Wed 13-Feb-13 21:21:59

I am sure this subject has beed done not to long ago

orangeandlemons Wed 13-Feb-13 21:23:48

I live nearish to it. I never even realised it had an amusing spelling. I just know it as Pennyston

IvorWindybottom Wed 13-Feb-13 21:24:38

do you live near Upperthong and Netherthong ?

GrimmaTheNome Wed 13-Feb-13 21:24:57

When I lived near the Amish country in Pennsylvania I always wondered if Intercourse had been named in total innocence.

SwedishEdith Wed 13-Feb-13 21:27:13

I knew someone who had this as their surname - driving licences only have the first 5 letters of your surname on them <snigger>

Fishandjam Wed 13-Feb-13 21:32:00

Wyre Piddle always makes me chuckle childishly. And Licky End.

ThisIsMummyPig Wed 13-Feb-13 21:35:43

Ah you see, there's the old story, that the people of South Yorkshire had been through a famine, and at the end they felt grateful, so they decided to name a town after something that was important. So they decided to call a town Bairn sley (Bairn being yorkshire for child) as children were the future.

The women the got all uppity, and said if it wasn't for them, there would be no bairns, so they called the next village Wombwell.

Well, the men couldn't have the women having a town named after them, so they demanded a place named after them. They though long and hard about the most important thing, and so Penistone came came into being.

I grew up in that area, but now live closer to Upper Ramsbottom.

Vinomcstephens Wed 13-Feb-13 21:36:31

I drive past penistone a lot and rightly or wrongly have a very childish snigger every time grin

I was in Torquay once, and saw a sign for Daddyhole - I really can't say why but that made me laugh like a drain too! (I think it was Torquay - somewhere dahn sarf in any event!)

BigGiantCowWithAKnockKnockTail Wed 13-Feb-13 21:38:27

I know someone whose surname is Penistone. You know how your driver number on your license starts with the first five letters of your surname...? Poor bloke hates it grin

ArtexMonkey Wed 13-Feb-13 21:41:25

Penistone is v nice smile I didn't know that story ThisIsMummyPig, that is very interesting.

We once drove past Fanny Hands Lane on the way home from holiday, eeeh, we did laugh.

BikeRunSki Wed 13-Feb-13 21:42:09

I went to the Penistone panto too! V random Cinderella staring a Dalek, a camel, lots of ghosts, Vatman and Robin and Gangnam style dancing! 2 x 4 yo and 1 x 1 yo were rapt for 2.5 hours. DH had a beer Shelly.

Penistone is my nearest town. It's a lovely little town. I had never thought of the rude alternative pronouciation until I saw a stand up comedian in Huddersfield (a few miles away) who was struggling. Started on the Penis Town jokes. Died on stage.

Although I work with someone whose surname is Penistone, and you know how your driving licence number begins with the first five letters of your surname....

Shitterton, Dorset

They had to put the place name on a lump of rock, because souvenir hunters kept pinching the road signs.

Gen dit no shit.

I used to live in Wombwell, MummyPig. Found it to be a strange place.

There is a brilliant soft play in Penistone which DD loves and is just for under 5's. Worth going just for the ginger and caramac cake

BikeRunSki Wed 13-Feb-13 21:44:33

x post BigCow !!! I wonder if it is the same person ? Does his first name begins with D?

BikeRunSki Wed 13-Feb-13 21:45:10

We love Jollytots Glen but I have never had that cake.

ThisIsMummyPig Wed 13-Feb-13 21:49:45

Artex - there's not a word of truth in the story. It is actually named after the penny rent it was listed for in the Domesday book.

Barnsley is a much newer town, and wasn't listed in the Domesday book at all.

BikeRunSki Wed 13-Feb-13 21:50:10

Staying close to Penistone, Middlestown (near Wakefield, where the Mining Museum is) was originally called Shitterton too, but changed it's name. It chose Middlestown because it is between Netherton (Far Town) and Overton (High Town). Or something like that anyway.

I like Great Fryup in N Yorks.

PrincessUnderpaid Wed 13-Feb-13 21:51:11

Not a million miles away ivor a true Yorkshire Pudding [winl]

ZolaBuddleia Wed 13-Feb-13 21:51:21

There's a Muff near Derry. And apparently yes, they do have a divers' club.

ToomuchWaternotWine Wed 13-Feb-13 21:54:48

You may not believe this, but an ex of mine moved from Clitheroe (clit-hero) to Penistone due to job change! He looked at several houses but decided on Penistone cos he just couldn't resist the name! (We are both Scottish btw so didn't know the local pronunciations sorry).

Ha ha genital city as a friend of mine calls it

LangenFlugelHappleHoff Wed 13-Feb-13 22:19:46

Used to drive through a town called Wankum in Germany on the way to the airport. Still makes me giggle

Selks Wed 13-Feb-13 22:21:34

I have a place called Slack Bottom not far away grin

grovel Wed 13-Feb-13 22:26:26

My Mum never, ever swore. One day (when she was 70) we drove through Funtington in Sussex. She very casually said to me "It's such an unsatisfactory name , darling, neither one thing nor the other". I nearly choked.

OxfordBags Wed 13-Feb-13 22:27:22

My friend's surname is Penistone. You know how driving licences use the first 5 letters of your surname as a sort of code? Yeah, his driving licence says PENIS on it. He uses it as an icebreaker when chatting people up grin

SwedishEdith Wed 13-Feb-13 22:31:03

Since that's about 5 of us who have posted about Penistones and their driving licences I reckon they all must use it as an ice-breaker grin

Isn't Upperthong around those parts - that always used to make me smile.

And for some reason I keep having a fit of the giggles about Funbag Drive grin

OxfordBags Wed 13-Feb-13 23:18:26

Ooops, I thought I had refreshed when I posted mine blush

MissPricklePants Wed 13-Feb-13 23:26:39

I live near a Penistone Avenue and have never heard anyone make a joke about it.

I've also passed Fanny Hand's Lane and know of a Slutwell lane too.

ArtexMonkey Thu 14-Feb-13 00:00:06

grin mummypig

Have we had wetwang yet? Chortle chortle.

I used to work at the local post office, the customer who used to comein and collect parcels who lived at clitsome view was Mr G.O.Stickly.....

Drizzleit Thu 14-Feb-13 07:49:20

Grovel that's brilliant grin

<waves at misspricklepants>

ArtVandelay Thu 14-Feb-13 07:59:34

Langen, we love going past the the turn-off to Wankum too! Was once in a traffic jam just north of Titz.

Bunbaker Thu 14-Feb-13 08:50:39

BikeRunSki Was there a heckler in the audience? He was so funny - I couldn't decide whether he was genuine or a plant.

Off to Penistone market today smile

Nicola10 Thu 14-Feb-13 09:48:06

Blimey! Didn't realise there were so many Mn'ers close to me! I live near Penistone as well! smile

Twattybollocks Thu 14-Feb-13 10:28:43

Never even thought of it like that! I suppose if you are brought up hearing the actual pronunciation the spelling doesn't register!

gerbilsarefun Thu 14-Feb-13 10:37:30

I live in South Yorks, never thought about Penistone. We did once pass a village, on the way to Drayton Manor called Willey. We got out the car and I had my picture taken next to the road sign. It was 20 years ago Haven't matured much since .

suburbophobe Thu 14-Feb-13 10:40:22

In NL there's a Burgemeester Fockstraat grin

Also there's a village called Sexbierum.

And there used to be the Fokker Friendship aeroplanes.

MadonnaKebab Thu 14-Feb-13 10:41:08

Road signs to nearby Wannaroo always have a T? added
Innaloo is also an odd place to be

Eskino Thu 14-Feb-13 10:42:04

Brown willy?!

Eskino Thu 14-Feb-13 10:42:46

And there's a place on the way to the Bridlington called Wetwang.

blackeyedsusan Thu 14-Feb-13 10:43:09

worse if your surname is penistone. the first 5 letters appear in the id number on you driving licence.. (or used to )

I drive past White Knobs Way on the way to work every day grin

complexnumber Thu 14-Feb-13 11:25:22

Does anyone else remember the 70's joke based on a TV ad slogan:

If Typhoo put the T in BriTain, who put the cunt in Scunthorpe?

GrimmaTheNome Thu 14-Feb-13 11:48:34

If anyone on this thread hasn't come across The Meaning of Liff - you'd probably enjoy it. They aren't all rude but some of the names figured here have appropriate definitions (I vaguely remember wetwang).

ILikeBirds Thu 14-Feb-13 11:55:23

I used to live near Knob Lick (missouri). Never ceased to amuse.

GrimmaTheNome Thu 14-Feb-13 19:06:30

We went ski-ing at Blue Knob somewhere in pennsylvania

somewherewest Thu 14-Feb-13 20:18:52

I love this thread, but then DH and I did once go slightly out of our way just to visit Nether Wallop. In Ireland we have the lovely Hackballscross and the aforementioned Muff.

TheOriginalLadyFT Thu 14-Feb-13 20:23:01

Had to take a pic of Twatt in Orkney when went there <childish>

Am also a Yorkshire lass, good to see so many Yorkshire MNers - perhaps we should have a Penistone Appreciation Society grin

Wetwang in East Yorks makes me laugh as well

TheOriginalLadyFT Thu 14-Feb-13 20:23:53

Or Netherthong and Upperthong in West Yorks

Bunbaker Thu 14-Feb-13 20:24:35

It poured down with rain when we drove through Piddledown Common.

Mandy2003 Thu 14-Feb-13 21:20:37

You can guess what happens to a road sign I've seen for Pucks Hill grin

wizzler Thu 14-Feb-13 21:22:24

I am another one from Sheffield who never thought of Penistone as being remotely amusing!!!

wizzler Thu 14-Feb-13 21:23:26

Eskino,,, there is a fab chip shop in Wetwang..

BikeRunSki Thu 14-Feb-13 22:04:10

There is a village near Halifax called Friendly. It has a Friendly Cricket Club.

catsmother Fri 15-Feb-13 08:42:52

I love that a tiny little road called Turkey Cock Lane gets an honourable mention on a thread about rude place names - we snigger each time we drive past it en route to Colchester Zoo.

Baabaapinksheep Fri 15-Feb-13 08:54:23

I live near Wilsford Cum Lake, and yes that is how it is spelt!

Grimma - there is supposed to be another edition of The Meaning of Liff published this year. I haven't looked at it for years, but it is one of the funniest books ever IMO.

<<waves at catsmother>> I live in Colchester and used to live near Turkey Cock Lane. Fingringhoe always used to crack me up as well, that's not far from here.

I used to live in Cock Lane, complete with the Cock Inn, which changed its name to the Red Lion.

I also used to live near the Fawcett Inn, which provided many a smirk.

TaggieCampbellBlack Fri 15-Feb-13 09:04:04

This has to be my longest running thresd ever!

Still makes me chuckle. As do the otherd. I'm particularly fancying Ugley.

MelodyBaker Fri 15-Feb-13 15:41:47

Strange. Link worked fine for me.

BalloonSlayer Fri 15-Feb-13 16:16:09

Didn't the WI in Ugley have to change it name to "The Women's Institute of Ugley" as it was tired of being called "The Ugley Women's Institute" ?

There is a town in Sussex called Uckfield which is on the River Uck. The signs for the river are extraordinary, not rectangular like ordinary signs, but shaped like a fat T around the words:

so that there is absolutely nowhere to add an extra letter.

One can only assume the council had grown rather tired of the constant vandalism to ordinary signs.

Bunbaker Fri 15-Feb-13 16:21:31

Maybe my anti-virus software doesn't like it. I have clicked on the link again and am still getting an error message.

Yfronts Fri 15-Feb-13 22:04:43

I drove through Wetwang the other day ...

ChairmanWow Fri 15-Feb-13 22:14:48

I used to live near Wetwang. Richard Whitely used to mention it on Countdown regularly so they made him honorary mayor.

I've been through Muff on a trip to Ireland as well. My equally immature husband made me take a photo of him licking the sign. He's right classy.

nooonit Fri 15-Feb-13 22:19:03

Massive double take when trawling through the threads at the "Penistone" title - greetings to fellow Penistoners! Starting to think I may know some of you, yes we were at the Panto last week too (with a beer in the interval!) and at the market yesterday!
Never think twice about the name till we have visitors (or when spelling it on the phone!) but Upperthong, that's a different matter ...

BikeRunSki Fri 15-Feb-13 22:19:18
