to think it's really poor form to have pages and pages of posters baying for updates on a thread?

(62 Posts)
MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Mon 11-Feb-13 10:02:36

Prompted by the snooping MIL thread, but I've seen it lots before on other thread.

Some people aren't tied to MN, they're out living their lives. Their priority isn't to provide a living soap opera for the MN masses.

Can I point out the watch button up there ^ for those you haven't found it yet.

CadleCrap Mon 11-Feb-13 10:10:20

Who is to decide on what is posted on threads. Are only note worthy opinions allowed?

Also, by bayingasking for updates, the OP has an idea of how much interest their thread has generated.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Mon 11-Feb-13 10:12:26

"Are only note worthy opinions allowed?"

Well, pages of "Come back OP and tell us what's happening" don't really make for great reading, that's true. wink

TidyDancer Mon 11-Feb-13 10:12:52

The watch button is pointless in a long thread. If your posts are highlighted, you can easily scan through and find your place.

I really hate the MN police who feel they can dictate how threads can go. Unless you work for HQ, this is not your job.

So to sum up, YABVU.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Mon 11-Feb-13 10:17:05

And as for leaving a simple full stop to mark your place, surely that's just rude.

wigglesrock Mon 11-Feb-13 10:17:33

YABU It's no more bad form than the posters that complain about grammar, spelling, lack of paragraphs, user names, swearing, Netmum affectations, etc, the use of etc grin.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Mon 11-Feb-13 10:17:55

CloudsAndTrees Mon 11-Feb-13 10:18:29

I agree with you. It does look a bit sad and pathetic tbh. I often share the sentiment and would like updates on threads I've been interested in, but if people have already posted 'OP - come and give us an update when you can' then there is really no need for pages and pages of the same post. It must be pretty unnerving for the OP, especially if there is nothing interesting to add!

I think the same about the 'marking place' posts.

I just put the save bookmark thingy on the last post I read, then scroll through for any green posts after that if I want to see if there's been an update.

CadleCrap Mon 11-Feb-13 10:18:49

OP if you had read it you would have found some good info about why the watch function isn't as good as marking your place on the thread.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Mon 11-Feb-13 10:19:53

Often there's a mounting hysterical mob mentality too. Like people worrying for the OP's safety when there is patently nothing to worry about.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Mon 11-Feb-13 10:20:52

Cadle - please do let me know. I cba to scroll through to find out.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo Mon 11-Feb-13 10:22:23

I think YANBU. Asking for an update is fine, especially if you are genuinely worried about the OP's situation, but if one or two posters have done this already recently you don't need everyone else following suit. I also don't see why you need to post on a thread to mark your place without saying anything of substance apart from "marking place" or similar. Seems a bit ghoulish IMO.

fishcalledwonder Mon 11-Feb-13 10:23:29

On the thread you are referring to, the OP has made it clear that she can't share the situation fully with anyone in RL and has appreciated the support and interest so YABU.

CadleCrap Mon 11-Feb-13 10:23:44

people worrying for the O's safety

On this point you are NBU as there is always at least one killjoy on what to most people is a light hearted thread.

fluffyraggies Mon 11-Feb-13 10:24:05

It is a bit boring scanning through all the 'marking my place' stuff, and one liners.

It's human nature though, to add your little bit. Like popping your head round the door and saying 'any news? Oh. Later then'.

MNs aren't a 'hive mind', as is often quoted. We're all an individual with a mind of our own. In a 'waiting' situation we're all going to be thinking the same thing.

Bearbehind Mon 11-Feb-13 10:25:01

I wondered at those random posts with just a full stop were all about, that is pretty rude. It's a bit like the snooping MIL that the thread was about! To me those posters do not want to make a contribution but want to carry on snooping and can't be bothered to work out where they had got to in another way- that is pretty bad form.

Scheherezade Mon 11-Feb-13 10:26:16

I don't mind it so much, but what is needless, thoughtless and rude are posters criticising the OP for not returning immediately. It's not a fiction novel ffs, its someones life! And yes, that was aimed at you, cradlecrap

GhoulWithADragonTattoo Mon 11-Feb-13 10:27:05

Fish - but now that OP has to scroll through hundreds of posts when half of them are not actually saying anything except "marking place" or "please give update". Much harder to find the posts that are genuinely helpful or supportive.

GetOrf Mon 11-Feb-13 10:28:57

I agree with sheherezade - cadle you were bloody rude on that thread, haranguing saying that the OP should see how many people wanted an update, with an angry face emoticon to boot.

CadleCrap Mon 11-Feb-13 10:29:12

The watch function shows only shows 18 posts and unless you remember to bookmark then you can't find the place you last left thethread. Therefore by marking your spot baying for an update you can see where you last posted.

Or sommat, I dunno I just scrolled past it grin

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Mon 11-Feb-13 10:30:38

Anyway, I'm off for a bit and will be back later.

<waits to see if any baying occurs>

DeafLeopard Mon 11-Feb-13 10:31:55

Mardy come back and update us

TBH I get bored with big long threads and wander off somewhere else.

usualsuspect Mon 11-Feb-13 10:35:56

Pages and pages of place marking is a bit sad TBH.

Just scroll through and look for the OPs highlighted posts.

fromparistoberlin Mon 11-Feb-13 10:36:30

every time I get into MN AIBU feel a bit sad and dirty after about a week

yanbu OP

and here I am, bright and fresh on a monday !!!!

NoelHeadbands Mon 11-Feb-13 10:37:08

I'm the same as usual

I think you've got to be hardcore to stay with a thread right to the bitter end grin

usualsuspect Mon 11-Feb-13 10:38:11

It's true, fromparis.

I give myself a talking too often, but still come back for more grin

But I rarely do the place marking thing. I don't get that involved.

fromparistoberlin Mon 11-Feb-13 10:39:52

I got a bit involved with chavvy daugter thread, to the extent to I told the OP to fuck off!!

DIRTY PILLOWS shame after that little episode

honestly if my RL mates knew I'd be embarrased!!!

MrsKeithRichards Mon 11-Feb-13 10:40:23

Mardy are you ok? Please update when you get the chance <worried>

YANBU, what gets me are the people who get angry at the OP for not coming back to update them immediately. I mean angry? Really?

CadleCrap Mon 11-Feb-13 10:40:43

Ragwort Mon 11-Feb-13 10:41:15

But why do so many people start a juicy interesting thread and then just leave abruptly, if you go to all the trouble of started a thread, presumably about a subject you care about or are worried about then it is just bad manners to drift off and not update everyone, even if you just come back to say 'nothing to update'. grin.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo Mon 11-Feb-13 10:41:51

ouryve Mon 11-Feb-13 10:42:20

Placemarking s a bit pointless, anyhow. You can boomark your place (need to turn this option on - on the same page your choose your colours etc) and, if you haven't posted in it, watch it. That's all you need to do. If it's grown, click on the thread title and the page will scroll to where you bookmarked it.

pluCaChange Mon 11-Feb-13 10:45:18

Very good point, Mardy. I've given up on the same thread for this very reason.

FFS, it's not necessary to make a threadkilling challenge out of someone's dilemma, and it's not as though the problem was desperately upsettuing for the OP, meaning she needed a MN cheerleading squad to give her the emotional oomph to tell someone to "FOTTFSOF" or say "NIACS" wink. MN does that extremely well, and it would be a shame to inhibit that urge.

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 10:47:06

Is Mardy coming back?

<wrings hands>>

usualsuspect Mon 11-Feb-13 10:47:52

Is Mardy ok?

I'm worried about her sad

GetOrf Mon 11-Feb-13 10:51:19

ethelb Mon 11-Feb-13 10:52:35

There is a lot of demanding people come back and answer you at the mo, which is just rude. You have no idea of another poster's circumstances.

roundtable Mon 11-Feb-13 10:58:36

I heard Mardy might be being kept hostage by place markers.

If she hasn't replied in two posts then I'll need to collect a ransom for her. Inbox me for my bank account details. I'll sort it, honest. . .

usualsuspect Mon 11-Feb-13 11:01:05

I only ever place mark on dodgy threads,so I can see the MNHQ deletion message.

fromparistoberlin Mon 11-Feb-13 11:03:24

mardy, let us know you are OK? xxx

GetOrf Mon 11-Feb-13 11:12:10

usualsuspect Mon 11-Feb-13 11:14:24

I've just come back to this thread and I see the OP still isn't back hmm

Pagwatch Mon 11-Feb-13 11:16:01

Does anyone know the OP in RL ?
Perhaps someone should check on her. I need to know if she is as mardy as she seems.

<misses point as had forgotten about mil thread and goes to look for it>

Has there been an update?

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Mon 11-Feb-13 12:14:36

Right, I've done a bit of work (spreadsheets - bah), played a couple of Words with Friends words with Chaos (whom I'm thrashing as usual [wunk]) and now I'm going to get thrashed at play some monopoly with DS, who is on half term.

I think, that in spite of all these developments, I'm OK, despite a few YABUs upthread. Sorry I haven't reported every development. I'm trying not to dripfeed. Believe me when I say I'm not a troll (cube of poo, river of sweetcorn, etc, etc).

SassySpice Mon 11-Feb-13 12:37:48

Isn't "dirty pillows" from Carrie or have I missed something?

foxache Mon 11-Feb-13 13:37:40

grin at DIRTY PILLOWS. I thought I was the only one, as well as muttering to myself 'they're all going to laugh at you' into the mirror, every time I get ready to go out.

fromparistoberlin Mon 11-Feb-13 13:42:29

hehe foxache!!!!

i used it as a term to refer to shame! ie my shame at telling some to fuck off!
