to ask really nicely that people think twice before referring to other women as bitches?

Even the ones you hate?

It is so vile and, I believe, the ultimate women-hating word.

I've done a quick search and its been used on here nearly 400 times this week.

Pretty please thanks

atacareercrossroads Sat 09-Feb-13 16:11:15

Yanbu to ask wink

I call men bitches too, equality an all that.....

Sugarice Sat 09-Feb-13 16:13:08

It's not a word that offends me so I'll continue to use it when I fancy. wink

HecateWhoopass Sat 09-Feb-13 16:15:56

I think the c word is the ultimate woman hating word. (I always think that if I type it, my mother will leap out from behind something and tan my backside wink)

But yes, I am trying to retrain myself in my use of insults. It's not something you tend to think about, but when you look into the history of the words, and think about what it is you are saying and why - you do realise that most of them are very anti-woman.

I'm trying to stick with arsewipe and shit for brains.

What we need is a big long list of good ones to use instead. grin

Pagwatch Sat 09-Feb-13 16:16:02

Sure thing cuntbag smile

Pagwatch Sat 09-Feb-13 16:17:01

Hec!

We spoke about this! Seriously, we need to confer before posting!

<<rolls eyes>>

Pancakeflipper Sat 09-Feb-13 16:17:23

I am not bothered about the word bitch.

I find people saying women are cunts really horrid. In fact I find it hard to even type the word without shuddering cos' I am such pathetic drip. But others don't find it offensive and in fact like it. So I just avoid the cunt threads.

cluelesscleaner Sat 09-Feb-13 16:18:07

The word bitch doesn't offend me where as Cunt really is vile.

Pagwatch Sat 09-Feb-13 16:18:18

I like cockmonkey as a go to insult.
Arsewipe is good to.

PimpMyHippo Sat 09-Feb-13 16:18:18

Agreed - although my personal most hated word is "slut". It sounds so hateful, it makes me shudder.

HecateWhoopass Sat 09-Feb-13 16:19:32

blush I'm sorry, paggy.

It won't happen again.

grin

catgirl1976 Sat 09-Feb-13 16:19:34

I like bitch and it's gender neutral to me

FlouncingMintyy Sat 09-Feb-13 16:20:06

I rarely see, for eg, "she was a cunt" used as a descriptor on here, it usually used in an affectionate way, in't it Pag?

But "she was a bitch" is casually used all the time.

Women-hating.

Sugarice Sat 09-Feb-13 16:20:42

Bell end is the one word I dislike for some reason.

Whore is another.

BabyRoger Sat 09-Feb-13 16:20:58

I don't find bitch offensive either. I agree that words like 'slut' or 'slapper' are offensive and I would never use them.

Startail Sat 09-Feb-13 16:21:05

Sorry YABU
As I said on the other thread, I only use it when it is totally deserved.

Just I reserve bastard for DSIS's best friends two timing, lying ex.

A very very small number of people are cunts and require accurate descriptions.

Cunt and wanker are unusable out loud in my social circle, so bitch and bastard have to suffice.

(Yes, bastard is actually unisex, but it has a good masculine ring to it.)

gwenniebee Sat 09-Feb-13 16:21:37

How can bitch be gender neutral?! It's distinguishes a female dog from a male dog - hardly gender neutral!

I agree - horrid word, as is calling people cunts.

FuriousRox Sat 09-Feb-13 16:23:31

Bitch is so so horrible I think. We used to use it all the time at school and I now loathe it. It's perhaps quite a personal thing though by the sounds of the other responses. I almost never use it but did slip up recently when describing the doc that performed an episiotomy on me/hacked me apart 15 weeks ago!

Pagwatch Sat 09-Feb-13 16:23:33

<<nods>> yes. Always affectionate. My best friends are cunts grin

I guess i just refuse to accept that women's genetalia must be the worst thing you can call someone. So I am uncomfortable with the weird special status it seems to have.
I get more irritated by insults based around any woman who dares to be over 50 - old cow, old hag etc etc. used on here a lot

catgirl1976 Sat 09-Feb-13 16:23:37

I like "cunty"

As in "that was really cunty"

But I would rarely call anyone cunt except in jest

Bitch is a great word

Slut and slapper etc are awful

HecateWhoopass Sat 09-Feb-13 16:25:16

While we're on the subject.

Is it offensive when i call you lot a bunch of bastards? Which I do on a regular basis. grin

eg, that bunch of bastards have had me googling so many revolting things that when I upgrade my pc I will have to bash this one into tiny pieces and eat them.

JumpingJackSprat Sat 09-Feb-13 16:25:20

soooo... what do we call bitchy people who are bitches if not bitch? there are worse words out there.

catgirl1976 Sat 09-Feb-13 16:26:02

gwennie

It's not gender neutral when describing an animal but it is for people

IME it is used to men as much as women. I call male friends bitches or tell them "don't be such a bitch" etc, so in those terms of use it's neutral

cluelesscleaner Sat 09-Feb-13 16:26:14

And Cunt isn't the ultimate woman hating word!?

Sugarice Sat 09-Feb-13 16:27:05

Yes what is an alternative for bitchy; gossipy, snippy, judgy?

None of them have the right ring hmm

HecateWhoopass Sat 09-Feb-13 16:27:34

spiteful?

ledkr Sat 09-Feb-13 16:29:25

Thing is right. If you want to insult someone who you dislike the choice of word will of course be offensive. If someone has pissed you off you aren't going to call them nice names are you?

LineRunner Sat 09-Feb-13 16:30:42

I agree with you, OP. It's not a word I allow to be used in my own home and my teenage DCs respect that around me. They 'get' that it's a word that only actually gets used to denigrate women; and thus is A Bad Thing.

BinksToEnlightenment Sat 09-Feb-13 16:30:47

It's slut or slag I hate. I'm fine with bitch.

chocoluvva Sat 09-Feb-13 16:31:15

Hmmm. Bitchy = nasty?

redlac Sat 09-Feb-13 16:31:27

I hate the word bint - maybe a local/Scottish insult but I bloody hate it

bawbag is the best insult for a man IMO

Pagwatch Sat 09-Feb-13 16:31:29

Cunts are wonderful things. I wouldn't be without mine.

NopeStillNothing Sat 09-Feb-13 16:35:33

I agree that slut or slag is the only insult I would never use. Mainly because it's a cop-out and says nothing about a persons character. I couldn't give a shit about anyones sex life but my own.
I do use bitch, but that is because some actions are bitchy and the cunts should be called up on it grin

MechanicalTheatre Sat 09-Feb-13 16:40:44

I hate bitch, slut, slag, slapper.

Totally fine with cunt and use it liberally, as well as cock and dick and dickhead and bawbag.

And rocket.

FlouncingMintyy Sat 09-Feb-13 16:46:17

Also hate slut and slag but its not such an issue on Mumsnet. "Slut" was only used 20 times last week (and some of that was people referring to themselves as "housework sluts" or TWI sluts) whereas bitch was used nearly 400 times.

Daren't advanced search cunt grin.

Sugarice Sat 09-Feb-13 16:46:45

But 'bitch' conveys just the right amount of distain and contempt when one might be referring to a particularly unpleasant individual deserving of the word.

willesden Sat 09-Feb-13 16:50:23

Wasn't it Madonna who said if a woman calls you a bitch then you have really pissed her off?!

Bitch and cunt are fine imo, I use liberally with both sexes. Whore and slut I hate - never use at all.

Surely so long as we are all thinking about what the words mean, that is all to the good?

Personally I am trying to avoid 'bitch' at the moment as for me it's not gender-neutral and I hear too much about how women 'bitch' at each other. But I am sure that is partly situational, as the way people use words changes.

Again, personally, I think 'cunt' is a fantastic word. Especially in the phrase 'I'd call you a cunt, but you don't have the warmth or depth'. grin

I agree with everyone else about 'slut' and 'slag'.

WorraLiberty Sat 09-Feb-13 16:55:07

I don't like cunt, slag, slut, whore, slapper.

But bitch is fine with me and quite a mild insult imo.

I use it both both sexes anyway as DH works mainly with men and when he tells me what 'so and so says behind so and so's back', I normally reply with "OMG what a bitch he is!"

Januarymadness Sat 09-Feb-13 17:06:29

I am one of the people who came up on the advanced search for this week. The use was deserved and appropriate. The male counterpart of the person I called a bitch I would call a cock. The use of that word would be approoriate too. I have not dished out those insults without thinking.sad

Mia4 Sat 09-Feb-13 17:08:38

YANBU to ask but it's one of those things whereby words have different connotations- some people use them gender neutrally, some people have reclaimed the words and use them to empower themselves and some people just don't care because to them the word fits.

I hate the words slut and whore-those were words I heard daily when verbally and emotionally abused. Cunt, I dislike but i use where I believe it's applicable when someone is really that bad in my eyes.

Bitch I will happily use to describe myself because the day I stood up to my abuser shouting at me he used the term bitch to try and insult me and instead it really really pushed me to stand up to him. I told him he could go fuck himself, that I wasn't a slut or cunt, that I was the bitch that would get his arse thrown in jail if he didn't back off.

I don't tend to use it insults, more the ther way

SkinnybitchWannabe Sat 09-Feb-13 17:11:49

My username is a no no then?
Or can I calling myself a bitch allowed..?

I think the argument against 'bitch' being used for both genders it that its origins are gender specific, right?

I do think it is interesting to try to work out how much influence 'submerged' gender-based insults have on atttitudes towards gender. But I think one thing is, once you learn the original meaning, there is a bit of a shock, even if you don't realize it in ordinary conversation.

I feel quaite faint with all this swearing.

<fans self>

Tee2072 Sat 09-Feb-13 17:15:45

You can ask. But I'll still use it.

Muminwestlondon Sat 09-Feb-13 17:28:34

I have used "bitchy" to describe something on another thread blush. I do see OP's point, but I use bitch for males and females. To me it describes a particularly vicious form of nastyness and I haven't found another word I prefer.

BTW I never use the word "slut" to describe other women or girls although my DDs seem to use it regularly - I tell them off. I also use the word "twat" regularly but I do get told off by my daughters.

rainrainandmorerain Sat 09-Feb-13 17:37:02

I loathe 'bitch.'

It's one of those words that marks out a special woman hating element of dislike, IME. I saw that woman from the Richard III doc that was on the other night (a lot of people found her irritating, and fair enough) routinely referred to on fb and elsewhere as a 'silly bitch'/'stupid bitch' etc.

There isn't an equivalent for men. Nasty words but nothing with the same misogynist edge.

KenLeeeeeee Sat 09-Feb-13 17:39:29

I am not nearly as offended by bitch as I am by whore, slut, slag and slapper.

I wonder how many more times the word bitch will appear on MN as a direct result of this thread grin

acceptableinthe80s Sat 09-Feb-13 17:42:39

Oops, i've just done it on another thread. In all fairness though the bitch almost killed my son!

SaladIsMyFriend Sat 09-Feb-13 17:45:46

YANBU to ask, but I don't mind being called a bitch - it usually means I have stood my ground over something and pissed someone who is not very nice anyway off. I have been called a bitch to my face by a man and took it as a compliment.

I think slag/slut etc. are much worse.

Viviennemary Sat 09-Feb-13 17:47:28

Some women are bitches. Everybody knows what the word means. So I don't think there is anything wrong with it. It's not a nice word for not a nice woman. Of which there are unfortunately a few. Like somebody having an affair with their best friend's husband and denying it. What other word could be used.

Branleuse Sat 09-Feb-13 17:50:56

i think the word bitch is much more misogynist than cunt.

quoteunquote Sat 09-Feb-13 17:56:18

OP, how many of the 400 were used on a dog thread?

PimpMyHippo Sun 10-Feb-13 01:27:33

With regard to the word "bitch" being used for men as well - to me, when someone calls a man a bitch, it seems like they have chosen that word because they want to be extra offensive by implying that not only is that man nasty, he's a particularly female kind of nasty, which is somehow worse. I think a man would be more offended if you called him a bitch than by, say, "bastard". So to me it still backs up the female=bad misogynist thing. Does anyone else interpret it this way?

Monty27 Sun 10-Feb-13 01:30:56

Ask away OP. some just are.

fact.

BOF Sun 10-Feb-13 01:59:41

I don't use bitch, slag, or slut. But I enjoy the Anglo-Saxon expressiveness of cunt. It can be almost affectionate (certainly in Scotland, where I've lived), like bugger or sod in the north of England. And I like demystifying it as the ultimate taboo word, because why should it be the worst thing you can think of? That said, I don't like men using it towards women, because it's still hate-filled in that context. It's a bit like the N word as used by white people in that way: inappropriate because it's not theirs to reclaim.

Monty27 Sun 10-Feb-13 02:14:05

Everyone's entitled to their favourite words.

AmIthatWintry Sun 10-Feb-13 02:18:11

I can think of plenty of words that are worse tbh.

If someone is being a bitch, then they are. Why call them something else

IneedAsockamnesty Sun 10-Feb-13 02:21:27

Bah never bothers me when I get called a bitch because its a very uninventive insult, shows a distinct lack of imagination.

I don't know but I'm sure its not a word I every really use myself,I can't think of any occasion when I've used it, but I do use the word cunt loads and I did use the word bollocks earlier but it got deleted because apparently telling someone they are talking bollocks is a personal attack.

I think I just don't like the way saying the word bitch feels in my mouth but the other words feel better when I say them. Like when you say cucumber it feels nice but saying turnips doesn't.

Well I know what I mean anyway.

EuroShopperEnergyDrink Sun 10-Feb-13 02:34:06

Cunt is not a woman hating word.

It's a slang term for a vagine that has been corrupted by years of feminine shame and a need for women to be much more demure than men- god forbid we talk about ladybits!

Stop buying into this and being shocked- there's nothing bloody wrong with it.

Bitch on the other hand has venom.
I much prefer cunt to bitch.

EuroShopperEnergyDrink Sun 10-Feb-13 02:34:33

PS CUNT CUNT CUNT CUNT CUNT CUNT CUNTING CUNT

cantspel Sun 10-Feb-13 03:00:52

cunt is an awful word to use as an insult.

By calling someone a cunt you are saying they are nothing more than a womans vagina. Well i dont think there is anything bad about womens vaginas so why use one as an insult?

Some lovely gender-free terms:
Fucknuts
Arse wipe
Ass gasket
Shit head
Reject
Shit pump
Oxygen thief
Gene polluter
Waste of space
Dirt bag

wigglesrock Sun 10-Feb-13 07:02:41

Oh I hate the word bitch, it makes me angry and I'm not sure why. I never use it, my Mum would never let us use it even now! I don't use slut, slutty, slag, she literally would have slapped the legs of us had she heard it.

Whereas cunt doesn't bother me at all (maybe its a regional thing). I use cunt to describe lots of things as in cunting car wouoldn't start etc. I also use dick a lot for both men and women.

EmmaBemma Sun 10-Feb-13 07:07:31

"By calling someone a cunt you are saying they are nothing more than a womans vagina. Well i dont think there is anything bad about womens vaginas so why use one as an insult? "

Loads of slang words for genitalia are used as insults though - dick, cock, bellend, and then bollocks to indicate disbelief/displeasure.

I don't say bitch either, or slag or slut. I don't like them, I think they're woman-hating words. But I do say cunt from time to time when the situation demands!

I use it, a fair bit, not loads. Don't use cunt much, when I do (once a year?) I'm REALLY angry.

But I see the point that it is generally used to describe women or particularly effeminate gay men. People MAY use it to describe men, but only when they are describing traits which are commonly seen as feminine ( although IME at work, men gossip way more).

So I thought Y were BU but I've changed my mind, YANBU & I will try to be more imaginative with my vile insults.

When someone, female or male, is being a bitch, I will tell them to stop being a bitch. I don't use the word that often. When someone is being a bitchy but they're also too thick to realise it, I will call them a dick. Again, female or male, and I seem to use this one a bit more.

I've only called someone a cunt once, and she had rammed a shopping trolley into my very obvious 34wk bump.

I use those words when they convey the meaning I want.

Yes but why bitch a word of female origin? The trait you are describing might be present in men or women but the point is that it is perceived as a negative female characteristic.

Boomerwang Sun 10-Feb-13 07:18:49

I just say 'cow' mostly. I don't think I call other women bitches or c... can't bring myself to type it.

Actually, thinking about it, when I really want to be venomous to someone I do use that c word. I wonder why I manage to forget that? I've never said it to a woman though, only my boyfriend.

HellesBelles396 Sun 10-Feb-13 07:33:39

I agree that when bitch is used about a man, it's used to question his inherent and masculine goodness and therefore is still slating women generally as well as the man in question.

Even my own df used the word bitch about women who's driving he disn't like - until I went into a rant with him about it! grin

We need better gender-neutral words!

Rooneyisalwaysmoaning Sun 10-Feb-13 07:42:34

I rarely, rarely use it but have done so in regard to one particular person IRL - but she was really horrid.

I never normally use it as I hate it.

HollyBerryBush Sun 10-Feb-13 07:51:30

Slut is one of my favourite words, aptly describing someone who is dirty or slovenly. I like slattern as well. They are the sort of words that just roll off the tongue about someone poor standards of cleanliness and sending unkempt children out.

I like Ye Olde Enlish words though. Rapscallion is a good one grin

IneedAsockamnesty Sun 10-Feb-13 11:12:06

Even when slut is used in the way holly described its horrible. Its just one of those words that should be left well alone.

( may have mega issues with that one due to abusive parent having it used in that context as there all time fav insult, usually said loudly in public in front of people who did not know it has two meanings thus leading to my sexual conduct constantly being questioned people thinking they could take liberties with me and just general unpleasantness up until I refused to stay in contact with anybody i Knew as a child)

ChestyLeRoux Sun 10-Feb-13 11:15:14

I dont say bitch really.I say dick hes a dick, shes a dick, thats a dickish thing to do etc.
