to give up MN for Lent?

I think it will a challenge for me to go for 40 days without MN. Harder than no chocolate for 40 days, or no TV. Also, I would then have more time to do useful things like housework, reading serious books, going to sleep earlier.

Anybody has done before?

HoHoHoNoYouDont Sat 02-Feb-13 16:59:18

Sometimes a break from MN is a good idea actually. Not sure about 40 days though.

And this "LENT", has he convinced your parents that his intentions are honourable? is he in possession of a good wedge?

It would deffo be good for my mental health. All I do is sit on here and name my fictional children. I'm 20 and at university.

overtheseatocalais Sat 02-Feb-13 17:53:27

I did it last year and will do it again this year. I am guilty of too much MN-ing and not enough useful stuff. It's hard, but I am proud that I did it last year. I will return after Lent, but hopefully with a cleaner house!

Oh, me too. I have an exam coming up - hence my name change to remind me every time I'm on here that I should be doing something else.

You will join Netmums before a week is out.

I did last year, it had its consequences! <gives DD3 (11 weeks) a cuddle> wink

BumpingFuglies Sat 02-Feb-13 18:42:58

shock

<narrows eyes at LENT>

YABU. That is all.

FeckOffCup Sat 02-Feb-13 18:48:53

I might give it a try too, I tried last year and only lasted about a week. Am trying to lose weight so I'm hoping that no MN would encourage me to take DD out for more walks, swimming etc (we do already but not as much as I'd ideally like to, I have got very lazy).

MikeLitoris Sat 02-Feb-13 18:50:53

I was just going to say I'll give up too until I read bluetinkerbells post.

It just isnt worth the risk I'm sorry grin

redexpat Sat 02-Feb-13 18:52:29

I think that's a very good idea. I may join you. Shall we flouce together at Flouncers Corner?

foxache Sat 02-Feb-13 18:56:49

Yes! I did it quite successfully last year, I had a different name then.

The first couple of days were hard, but I soon found two brand new obsessions to take the place of MN, which caused me to spend hours on the internet. It still was nowhere near as consuming as posting here though.

After the forty days was over, I found it quite hard to get back into and it wasn't the same as before - it was like being completely new again.

ILikeBirds Sat 02-Feb-13 18:59:13

It's 47 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday btw, just in case that might sway you one way or the other.

TheSecretCervixDNCOP Sat 02-Feb-13 19:02:15

when does lent begin

The forty days don't include Sundays; so you could have a weekly fix...

theweekendisnear Sat 02-Feb-13 19:30:28

Bluetinkerbell, Congratulations! That's so sweet.

ThreeBeeOneGee , I was not aware of the Sunday feasts!

Redexpat, I had to google for Flouncers' corner! I am so ignorant

See, if I give up MN for Lent, I will not be able to learn such useful things. I have learnt so much from MN, and my typing speed has improved!

Nevertheless, I think I'll do it.

I'm going to read some posts on Flouncers' corner now!

MrsHoarder Sat 02-Feb-13 19:35:31

I was going to give up non-study related internet for lent. So YANBU.

We might have to have a group fred on flouncers corner [misses the point]

FrustratedSycamoresRocks Sat 02-Feb-13 19:52:51

Yabu how will you cope

I was going to, but I decided bread would be easier.

YANBU. I might join you. I waste far too much time on here and as I am starting a new job soon in a completely different field to anything I have done before, I have a lot of studying to do before I start and really can't procrastinate much longer. MN is far more addictive than FB, and therefore not very good for me.

I tried to give it up as a New Year's resolution but was back on before the kids went back to school after Christmas Epic fail.

<contemplates joining in Lenten giving up of mn>

<starts hyperventilating>

I don't think it would be very good for me....

EugenesAxe Sat 02-Feb-13 20:09:07

I may join you actually. It stops me playing with my children frequently and is a bad thing. I could cope with Sunday splurges as DH will be there to pick up the pieces.

aftermay Sat 02-Feb-13 20:41:00

Right. So when do we start and will there be a support thread to check in and see how we're doing? grin

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Sat 02-Feb-13 20:45:37

<Tentative> I might join you...

Lueji Sat 02-Feb-13 20:50:36

It's 47 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday

Erm, no it's "only" 40.
smile

theweekendisnear Sat 02-Feb-13 20:51:38

Well, one of the ones that gave up or tried to give up MN for Lent 2013 could post again after March 30 and all the others that tried could post a comment to write what they thought of the break from MN.

Deal?

Lueji Sat 02-Feb-13 20:54:35

I've already managed 40 years, not sure I can miss 40 days now... ;)

Now I'm confused. Ash Wednesday: 13 Feb. Easter Sunday: 31 March. I make it 46 days if Ash Wednesday is your first day without MN and Holy Saturday is your last day without MN. But then I am quite tired, to be fair.

PretzelTime Sat 02-Feb-13 21:07:13

Only MN? It's good to take a break from the internet in general now and then. But 40 days? I too think we'd need a support thread for that wink

GraceAndVirtue Sat 02-Feb-13 21:08:52

ThreeBee you are right. The Sundays in Lent don't count. Subtract those and you have 40 days.

In previous years I have given up chocolate or even alcohol and treated Sunday the same as any other day, otherwise I would have binged. Think it would be the same with MN. Sunday would disappear in a frenzy of thread-reading.

Snazzynewyear Sat 02-Feb-13 21:09:25

Ooh, now, that is a thought. Would probably do me good. <thinks>

Back2Two Sat 02-Feb-13 21:10:45

LTB

PretzelTime Sat 02-Feb-13 21:13:28

LTB = Leave The Board?

GraceAndVirtue Sat 02-Feb-13 23:18:11

I gave up MN for New Year, was back by the middle of January. And yet I managed to give up alcohol for the whole of Lent last year.

What is it about this place that's so addictive?

Aethelfleda Sun 03-Feb-13 19:28:36

I did last year! Allowed one post a day on the AN thread an that was it for internet with the exception of "directed shopping" (as in DD needs school tights, buy tights online, off again). It was definitely harder than a food/drink/choc based denial! and my house is still a mess
