to think that people who read threads from top to bottom are weirdos

(108 Posts)
MmeLindor Thu 31-Jan-13 23:54:21

and that MN threads should be set to newest post at the top.

EmpressOfThePuddle Thu 31-Jan-13 23:59:15

I have mine set that way if know I'm only going to be looking at top-up posts, but if there's a lot to read I find it way easier to just go downwards.

AnyFucker Fri 01-Feb-13 00:00:42

I have it newest at the top on my phone, and t'other way round on the pc

I'm maaaaad, me smile

are you GOADING Mme? <snigger>

I read top to bottom, newest post at bottom

I also use Mn classic much to YMT's disgust, he challenged me to try MnNew for a month, I managed about 5 mins. All that BLUE, hurt my eyes.

[olde farte]

Softlysoftly Fri 01-Feb-13 00:03:21

YABU if you are new to a thread not just flipping it to read additional comments after you have read/joined.

Otherwise it reads like this:

Op: AIBU to hug my grandma as I love her?

Newest post: a wankbadger would totally win in that scenario now who's buying the "mn against goat haters" uniforms?

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:03:51

If it is a long thread, then I flip it and read from top to bottom.

that would confuse me.

I am hoping to start a 800 post bunfight about the right way to read a MN thread. Don't tell MNHQ

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:05:06

Your posts make you sound like a numpty wink

I go top to bottom. I mean, how on earth does it make sense otherwise?!

manicbmc Fri 01-Feb-13 00:05:22

This is all very well... but what is the moon icon under where it says 'advanced search'? Is it safe to click on it or will I be transported to B***ty? grin

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:06:32

Nah, it's safe to click. Honest. Honestly honest grin

WorraLiberty Fri 01-Feb-13 00:06:42

I don't have pages...just one long thread and I always bookmark so it takes me to the last post I read.

I couldn't be reading them upside down, flipped or sunny side would confuse my lonely braincell.

On another note, MN is one of the few forums I've been on that doesn't automatically bookmark the last post you read for you.

It took me a long while to get used to that confused

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:07:06

I was here about 3 years before I realised what flip thread meant. I thought it meant 'flip' it to a friend. hmm

It is SO much better to read top down, so newest post at the bottom.

And MN new is better as well, with 100 posts per page. You get to pick the colours - so I have set it so the OP's posts are in purple, and mine are in green (VERY tasteful colours as well, no pinks grin)

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:07:50

Bookmark is great.

I don't think you get that on MN classic.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:08:37

I bet you read the final page of a novel first, as well MmeL.

Like my weirdo DH.

manicbmc Fri 01-Feb-13 00:08:48

I clicked.

That is so brilliant. grin

Alarielle Fri 01-Feb-13 00:09:07

Reading a new thread newest post first would be like opening a book at the end and reading backwards.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:09:09

I flip to read long threads and read top to bottom, but if the new posts go on to the bottom then I have to scroll down there. Much easier to have them at the top.

I agree that it does sometimes make me pause when I see a totally unrelated last post before I flip the thread.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:09:13

I find myself trying to bookmark other sites now.

AnyFucker Fri 01-Feb-13 00:09:40

I don't understand bookmarking

How do you do it, and what does it mean. It seems to happen on my phone without me asking, but not on the pc.

Gee, thanks.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:10:21

I don't since I started reading on the Kindle. And only books that I can't tell what will happen, or if I am not sure if I want to read on.

I have one long thread. No pages.

yeah, GetOrf, YMT wouldn't give us Bookmark on Classic, it's available on New only, the tempting bastard grin

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:11:15

Anyf it's great. You click the bookmark button on the last post you read, and then when you refresh or come back to the thread later it goes straight to that last post, so you don't have to read through all the stuff you have read before.

Very useful when you have pages.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:11:36

If it's a long thread, I either:

a) skimread, especially the OP's posts
b) read every bloody word, if it's a corker
c) read the first page, flip to the end to see how it's going

and then decide whether to post or give up.

An easier way would be to lurk permanently on MN, and join every thread at the beginning (naming no names).

WorraLiberty Fri 01-Feb-13 00:11:40

AF when you're on your PC, hover under 'message poster' and 'bookmark' appears. Just click it and it'll say 'saved'.

Then when you refresh the thread or click into it again, it'll take you to that post.

Saves all the scrolling and shit.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:11:58

One long thread takes aaaages to load (on a phone anyway, bastard blackberrys)

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:12:52

OP post highlighted in colours is really good.

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:13:17

S'alright, Chaos. You can be in my weirdos club. Way cooler than anyone else's.

And it wasn't a personal attack numptybrains

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:13:31

I bloody love bookmarking.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:14:25

Shouldn't that be "wireod" or something chaos

Gwan, Mards.

Name some names.

<<tries to fuckliy goad>>

WorraLiberty Fri 01-Feb-13 00:14:39

I have the OP's posts set to a murky green (possibly a shade of grey...I'm colour blind) and my own set to pink.

It definitely helps in skim reading a long thread.

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:14:44

And YY to highlighted posts. Mine are
Purple, OPs are green and MNHQs a nice pale blue.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:14:45

I tried the bookmarking but didn't like it. I think it was cause it got confused when I posted on phone. Not sure.

Long thread reading tactic:

1. Flip
2. Skim
3. Search for humphy faces or Message Deleted By Mumsnet posts
4. Stop and read bits that look interesting
5. Depending on topic of thread CTRL F and search for my name <vain>

Capital Cee, svp.

EduC, yow know I'm in ya club, bab.

Still think it's slightly cheating, Mme.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:16:06

Sorry Chaos.

Don't encourage Mardy to name names though. We've done that enough for today you can PM me instead

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:16:07

The OP is grey. I am a delicate shade of purple. I don't like some of the murky colour options.

<pointedly ignores goading>

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:16:26

Yow'm right about that, me babber.

skullcandy Fri 01-Feb-13 00:16:35

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

VinegarTits Fri 01-Feb-13 00:17:05

YANBU i always read them from the bottom up, my way is the only way it should be done [sniff]

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:17:20

What's the ControlF Mme.
Mac user here, so might be something different.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:18:30

"We've done that enough for today"

What have I missed?
Tax return is done now though. You might see more of me tomorrow.

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:18:38

Ctrl F is search. Try Cmd F.

WorraLiberty Fri 01-Feb-13 00:19:01

I've only got mine set to 'no pages' cos I was fed up of getting half way through a thread, only to find it went Poofff.

Having one long thread means I can read at my in the knowledge I can read it all grin

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:19:19

Stealth boats? Like ones that sail at night with all the portholes covered up?

You know the tip about having contentious threads open in 2 tabs, don't you, WorraL?

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:20:14

Brilliant. Cmd f is great. Never knew about that.

Hope I'm not teaching you to suvk egggs, obvis.

WorraLiberty Fri 01-Feb-13 00:21:28

I hadn't really thought about opening 2 tabs blush

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:21:53

yy to search the page, CTRL F and type your name. Or whoever you are searching for. It is v handy.

I really couldn't say, Mardy. There were a lot of people doing their tax return today.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:22:08

Yes if a long thread looks like it is going to descend into mayhem I quickly go to 'show all messages' in case it disappears halfway through.

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:22:34

How does two tabs work? Cos if it goes poof you won't be able to get into the next page, surely?

Yup, and just refresh the oldest one. Then when it does go poof, you've got teh maximum posts possible.

OutragedFromLeeds Fri 01-Feb-13 00:22:54

I follow the advice of the king from Alice in Wonderland (who I believe to be a secret mumsnetter), I always begin at the beginning and go on till I come to the end: then stop.

Top to bottom, it's the only way.

LIsten to ChaosSan.

Only ever read OneONPage.

Multipages is wank.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:23:53

yes, I do the two tabs thing too.

Any other tricks?

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:24:22

That sounds like effort.

In other news, having seen Les Mis, I have decided that Eddie Redmayne will be my husband.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:25:24

I like pages. It gives the thread some structure.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:25:29

I watched Django Unchained and fancy Christoph Waltz.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:25:41

Hands off Edu.

WorraLiberty Fri 01-Feb-13 00:25:46

Oh now I'm confused?

If I refresh the oldest one, won't it go poof anyway?

Perhaps I should have 2 PCs, 4 laptops and various hand held devices logged on...and I can run around the house like I'm spinning plates.

That should do it grin

If you want to know where all the shizzle is going down that day, use AS to search for "Deleted By Mumsnet" or "Peace and love".

Takes you straighy to the flames...

Yus, but you'll still have the most recentest one still alive.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:26:36

lol at searching for peace and love grin

That is a brilliant tip.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:26:59

Unfortunately if you look at my hoverererer, he might not be interested in me.

Unless he has a penchant for dumpy middle-aged women.

I need someone to go and see Les Mis with.

<<flutters eyelashes>>

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:28:09

I just go to Active Convos and go for the threads with the most posts, as they're usually either contentious or funny.

I was called wise today, GetO!

I took a screenshot, oh, yus, I dif.

WorraLiberty Fri 01-Feb-13 00:29:26

I suppose I could search for < Ahem! >

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:29:57

I couldn't work out why everyone was crying. Then realised he was signing a sad song. I was too busy admiring his freckles. In all seriousness, I think he is the most beautiful man I have ever seen.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:30:00

You can come with me and DD if you're in my neck of the woods Chaos. I still haven't seen it (due to the aforementioned tax return). But I still love Eddie since Tess of the D'Urbevilles (although Gemma Arterton was shite in that with her crap West Country accent and wooden accent).

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:30:04

lol at wise.

My proudest moment on MN was when buppy called me an atrocious cunt for slagging off Kurt Cobain. It doesn't get better than that.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:30:40

Ha. Peace and love it a great search term.

Taylor Kitsch. You will lust after no Eddies, if you have gazed at the lusciousness that it Taylor.

Despite his funny name.

Yup, that;s another goody.

Also "My first biscuit"

Although, it has been know that some posters say that repeatedly.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:30:59

Gemma Arteron can piss off.

Why is she famous? Has she been in anything good? She is wooden in all things I have seen.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:31:03

Are we hijacking this thread a bit Edu?

Did you see him in Birdsong? I swear his skin was translucent.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:32:43

My first love had freckles like Eddie. I would study them for hours.

100.5 miles, Mardy.

But you could take GetO, even if she is an AC.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:33:45

He's a bit toothy, yer Eddie.

Taylor shirtless.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:34:06

Don't you go outing my location Chaos wink

I like to attempt to be mysterious.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:34:48

I would go and see Les Mis but doesn't Anne Hathaway's Cottage have all her teeth pulled out? I can't watch teeth. I blame Laurence Olivier.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:35:37

He is a bit too pretty mme.

Oh utterbum, soz. bab.

As an aside I have just googled Taylor Kitsch, Mme.

Did you knpw he IS A CANADIAN?

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:35:58

Taylor doesn't do it for me. Sorry MmeL.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:38:09

Is she really called Anne Hathaway? In real life? Or did she change her name.

Bloody silly.

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:38:34

She does, but you don't see anything.

You are my seriously trying to trade me Taylor weasel Kitsh for te lovely and perfectly toothed Redmayne? shock

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:39:02

That is her real name.

<bores self to death>

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:39:58

Nooo just the thought of someone having their teeth pulled. <shudder>

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:40:07

Jane Seymour changed her name. Better than Anne of Cleves, mare of Flanders though.

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:40:52

Oh fuck buggery bollocks, I've just realised its Thursday. I thought it was Friday, I've got to be up in 5 hours shock Arse. I am going to be a right grump tomorrow. T'is all of you's fault.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:41:02

Joan Crawford cahnged her name from Lucille LeSeur. Imagine a world where Joan was considered a more attractive name than Lucille. JOAN.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:41:19

Minnie Driver is a silly name.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:41:31

That is fine by me, that you don't like MY CANADIAN.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:42:26

I thought of you today MmeL, when I bought two lindor eggs for a quid.

Just saying.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:42:43

I think also Tinie Tempah needs to have a word with himself.

GetOrf Fri 01-Feb-13 00:43:26

I am going to bed. i am talking monumental bollocks even by my own very low standards.

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:44:07

Yep. I need beauty sleep.

is Tinie Tempah in Les Mis?

MardyBraWouldDoEddieRedmayne Fri 01-Feb-13 00:44:15

Night all.

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:44:17

My mate once saw Tinie Tempah in Asda. True fact.

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 00:48:55

It makes me smile to think of MNetters buying Lindors and thinking of me.

Night all.

Walkacrossthesand Fri 01-Feb-13 00:50:31

My 18 year old watched the (fairly) recent re-run of Birdsong with me. I don't think she'd have bothered if it hadn't been for translucent Eddie. Not my type though (Eddie, not DD.) oh, and finding a previously unspotted good thread with 800 posts on is aaargh. they're always thundering on so fast you can barely keep up - but I don't want to be that poster who clearly hasn't read the thread, so I soldier on...

EduCated Fri 01-Feb-13 00:50:37

I don't actually really like Lindors... blush On which note, night all.

LadyWellian Fri 01-Feb-13 00:55:31

YABU, that would make every thread like reading Time's Arrow by Martin Amis. I usually read a whole thread before commenting. I've made an exception in this case so forgive me if it's been said already grin

PrincessFiorimonde Fri 01-Feb-13 00:56:26

I don't know what you mean.
Does 'top to bottom' mean 'from start to finish'? i.e. from first timed post to last timed post? If so, why is that a weird thing to do?

MmeLindor Fri 01-Feb-13 08:20:08

When you read a thread, is the latest post at the top or the bottom?

I have my MN set so that the last post is at the top, so I read from the bottom up. It means that when I come back to the thread I immediately see the last post.

Some weird people have it the other way around and can't see sense. wink

PrincessFiorimonde Fri 01-Feb-13 11:14:48

I see. I'm one of the weirdos, then, as I prefer to see the argument debate unfold from start to finish.
