To start smoking again

My one pleasure in life pre kids was a cigarette at the end of the day. I stopped smoking when I fell pregnant and haven't smoked since.

I don't drink, I don't go out, I'm stressed up to the hilt and I bloody well feel like I want to say up yours to the world right now.

Aibu to start smoking again?

awaywego1 Tue 29-Jan-13 21:15:05

You are not being unreasonable because of course it's totally your own choice. But you know that It won't really help though, it will tell you it will, but it won't, not really you will still feel the same. Giving up is hell. Try and do other things to avoid going back to this-your future self will jot thank you.
I'm sorry you are feeling crap though-can you tell us more about what's going on?
(I say this is a current smoker who is trying to quit hmm)

McNewPants2013 Tue 29-Jan-13 21:18:00

DON'T DO IT.

That i feel back into the trap of smoking between 10-15 a day. do something else.

I would love to be able to quit, but after many failed attempt it gets harder each time.

Locketjuice Tue 29-Jan-13 21:19:34

Don't do it shockshock

specialsubject Tue 29-Jan-13 21:20:00

I feel for you if your only pleasure was a stinky cancer-causing addictive drug.

spend the money on something fun!

TrinityRhino Tue 29-Jan-13 21:20:15

please don't

I know how you feel but i did that after I had been stopped for three years

nearly 10 years on I'm a 20 a day smoker that wants to stop but hasn't managed

MrsBW Tue 29-Jan-13 21:20:37

I finally quit 13 months ago after many attempts.

Don't do it - you'll be thoroughly pissed off with yourself tomorrow.

Besides - smoking doesn't reduce stress. It's been proven to increase it (yes I know - I always used to smoke to relieve the stress too, but all it does is relieve the cravings -which if you didn't smoke you wouldn't get anyway).

Here endeth the lesson. smile

baskingseals Tue 29-Jan-13 21:21:45

a fag wont solve anything. give you a brief respite, and then hours of feeling even more shit, because on top of everything else you smoke.

i know that fuck it feeling, but can you replace it with something else. i've just eaten 3 creme eggs one after the other - could you do something like that?

Mrcrumpswife Tue 29-Jan-13 21:22:29

NO NO NO NO NO!

Please dont do it. Pop over to Loops Champix thread and see what we are putting ourselves through giving up.

http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1652275-Champix-quitting-support-thread

Whatever problems you have before you go outside to have the demon fag will still be there when you get back indoors cold and smelly.

I envy you being a non smoker. I'm on Day 11 of no cigs and cant wait to be further down the road like you so dont pick up that fag. YABVVVUsmile

WorraLiberty Tue 29-Jan-13 21:22:59

Tell you what, I'd bloody laugh if every single person here said "YANBU, nip down the all night garage and buy some".

Your face would be like ---> shock shock shock

Really OP what do you expect everyone to say?

LittleMissStupid Tue 29-Jan-13 21:26:10

dont do it!

Do you not remember how stressful it is when you are down to your last few fags and now where near a shop??! grin

I gave up 2 yrs ago and i still fancy a fag every now and again. in fact i had one on boxing day, it was lovely! but i will never buy a pack because it is a slippery slope!!

PleasePudding Tue 29-Jan-13 21:26:20

I totally know how you feel. I did that and quickly found my way back to smoking more than one a day and only managed to atop again when I got pregnant with DC3. I miss it so much but if I go back I don't see how I'll ever stop.

However you did say you only ever had one a day so are obviously very strong-willed.

Is there something else you could do that you would enjoy as much?

I miss the quiet, slow breathing, time to myself without interruptions, sitting outside.

On the other hand I don't miss the guilt, the expense, the hours spent looking for a lighter, the smell on my clothes and my hands and the feeling of dependence.

PrettyKitty1986 Tue 29-Jan-13 21:26:27

Don't do it! You'll be so gutted tomorrow and even more gutted in a month when you've slipped back into the habit. Google smoking horror stories, and remind yourself of all the reasons you quit.

McNewPants2013 Tue 29-Jan-13 21:26:48

Pmsl worra you made me spit out my tea

baskingseals Tue 29-Jan-13 21:27:32

mrscrump - i am on day 12 of no fags. i have got a skycig and patches though.

it is fairly horrific tbh, but i just can't smoke any more. i've smoked for nearly 30 years. could you link to the giving up thread again please?

DameFanny Tue 29-Jan-13 21:27:59

Why not just step out of the back door, close your eyes and breathe for 5 minutes without people nagging you - all the best bits of a fag break without the health risks?

aldiwhore Tue 29-Jan-13 21:28:39

If you were REALLY only having one a day, well tbh, why not.

If you're fibbing, which you probably are, then don't do it.

My Granny smoked one cig every day at 11am, and had one brandy every evening at 8pm. She wasn't stupid or evil, just VERY restrained!

One cig may not 'solve' anything. One cig may not be healthy. If one cig, and one cig only is what you fancy, then I'm not your boss, you're not stupid if you want that ONE cig, have it.

But YABU to expect anyone to advocate it in these days of 'smoking = evil selfish monster'. I WISH I could only have 'one cig', I LOVED smoking. (even though it's evil, blah blah obvious blah)

McNewPants2013 Tue 29-Jan-13 21:29:43
HermioneE Tue 29-Jan-13 21:30:33

If you really wanted to you wouldn't ask wink

So my vote is YABU. That's as an ex smoker who thinks it's the best thing ever. If I live to 80 I'm taking it up again.

At least wait and see if you still feel the same in a month?

WorraLiberty Tue 29-Jan-13 21:31:02

Well really, I've never known such a nonsense thread blush

aldiwhore Tue 29-Jan-13 21:36:00

Never seek approval to do something you know isn't good for you.

I am not asking for a round of applause for smoking my second cig of the day in the shed on the pretext of 'getting more coal'. I don't need approval or permission.

I know what I do, why I do it, and how far I've come from 20 a day. Doesn't make my choice healthy.

I agree with Worra... and don't expect her approval wink

baskingseals Tue 29-Jan-13 21:40:27

thanks pants

Locketjuice Wed 30-Jan-13 09:02:11

Worra grin

FergusSingsTheBlues Wed 30-Jan-13 09:04:39

Youre not alone.
Im fantasising about a stiff GnT and a fag as soon as this wean's oot.

Hoofhearted69 Wed 30-Jan-13 09:45:51

In the interests of fairness since you have already purged your body of the vile cancer causing toxins when you gave up, I will take a hit for the team and you especially Pondering, and nip out now and have one for you...you can bask in the glow of your willpower and experience a bit of vicarious pleasure knowing you won't be freezing your tits off in the shitty weather looking a right twat as you squint to keep the molten hot ash from scorching your corneas, and feel relief that this onerous task has been whisked away from you without having the hassle of buying a pack of 10 and then justifying smoking the other 9... You're welcome! Xxx

Yabu.

Drink a glass of wine instead.

YouOldSlag Wed 30-Jan-13 10:02:50

OP, I know exactly how you feel and I have been in the same boat. Pre DH and DCs, a fag was very much my thing. I was seriously addicted. However, I dropped them like a stone when I got pregnant and stayed off them for 5 years. Didn't even miss them, and felt great.

Fastforward five years and I was thinking "Who did I used to be?" and ended up thinking a cheeky fag now and then wouldn't hurt and it kind of reminded me that I used to me and not just Mum.

18 months later I had to stop doing it as I went up to 6 or 7 every day and the guilt and the smell and the restlessness between fags made me so miserable. Three days ago I finished the Allen Carr book and had my last fag. I feel amazing and starting again was a really daft thing to do.

Please don't do it, it will get out of hand and you will feel miserable and hate yourself. But Do definitely treat yourself more in other ways. A little bottle of perfume, a meal out, a swim- whatever you like as long its not fags.

Find a new way to be the old you.

Shodan Wed 30-Jan-13 10:05:34

I know how you're feeling.

I quit 3 weeks ago and have had insomnia ever since. I'm ok in the daytime but at night I crave a fag very badly.

Wine doesn't help- it makes me feel sick (I discovered last night). Only the thought of having to go through all this again is stopping me running to the shop.

Sigh. It will be worth it in the end, so they say.

YouOldSlag Wed 30-Jan-13 10:07:57

Shodan- have you read the Allen Carr book? He says the willpower method is really hard. It's worth a read. I was a committed smoker and he opened my eyes and made it easier.

YouOldSlag Wed 30-Jan-13 10:10:15

He also tells you to be thrilled you are "free" rather than miserable that you have "given up".

I can't say I'm thrilled to be free, but it's certainly a great feeling and he has un-brainwashed me away from thinking smoking was nice. I smell amazing too! (little brag) so nice to smell good again.

PickledInAPearTree Wed 30-Jan-13 10:18:44

Allen Carr is good, I gave up with him.

The first time! Just the one, never is.

ChocolateCoins Wed 30-Jan-13 10:20:07

Please don't do it op. You've done so well not to smoke all this time! Is there nothing else you could have for yourself? If that makes sense?

Fakebook Wed 30-Jan-13 10:22:27

It's your life and your body. If you do start again, try not to light one up at a bus stop, children's play area, or narrow roads with loads of pedestrians.

Yfronts Wed 30-Jan-13 11:15:47

find a nicer habit? You are an example to your children.

KellyElly Wed 30-Jan-13 11:18:53

No, no, no. Don't do it. You will regret it so much. I have tried and failed to give up on numerous occasions - stress always being the excuse to slip back into the habit. Stay strong!

YouOldSlag Wed 30-Jan-13 11:27:02

Try reading Allen Carr even if you don't take it up back up again. He really
de-constructs it until you realise how boring and pointless it is.
