To think MN is bizarre?

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 20:51:38

Look at the last 39 threads and ask yourself is this normal or are people a bit silly?

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 20:52:23

Why?

LadyBeagleEyes Sat 26-Jan-13 20:52:56

Eh?

Pandemoniaa Sat 26-Jan-13 20:53:21

It's more bizarre to attempt to define "normal", IMHO.

toomuch2young Sat 26-Jan-13 20:54:02

The last 39? Where do you find those?
Do you mean active?
What makes them all silly?

sittinginthesun Sat 26-Jan-13 20:54:05

Maybe this one is?

Greensleeves Sat 26-Jan-13 20:54:19

What?

Callmedoe Sat 26-Jan-13 20:54:41

Its extremely bizarre. I'm fairly new and am still finding everything quite odd if I'm honest

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 20:55:01

Nowt as funny as folk.

It's why I come here, I feel as though I fit in.

SolidSnake Sat 26-Jan-13 20:55:22

39 is a very particular number

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Sat 26-Jan-13 20:55:52

People are bizarre.

It's what makes the world an interesting place.

OneHundredSecondsofSolitude Sat 26-Jan-13 20:57:31

Hf1585368 wasn't it you who had a celeb secret years ago?

Can you tell me what it was now please?

sittinginthesun Sat 26-Jan-13 20:57:55

Just had a quick scan over active convos, and seems same as normal. School queries, couple of dinner queries, pets etc. Spent the afternoon with a friend, and pretty much covered same topics..

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 20:59:21

It's interesting seeing what people choose to post about, but the bit I'd be more interested in is what people daren't post.

I know I've got a fair few that have the possibility of me being hounded off the boards if I posted them grin

bootsycollins Sat 26-Jan-13 21:00:25

Spill! And it better not be something rubbish like you once got Liz Jones autograph confused

TheVermiciousKnid Sat 26-Jan-13 21:00:41

42

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 21:03:12

grin TheVermiciousKnid

Marvin...

TheVermiciousKnid Sat 26-Jan-13 21:04:36

wink

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 21:05:48

Come on OP - expand!

MrsWembley Sat 26-Jan-13 21:06:57

I'll see your 42, Knid, and raise you a blind watchmaker...

TheVermiciousKnid Sat 26-Jan-13 21:07:57

But will the blind watchmaker see the 42?

PoppyWearer Sat 26-Jan-13 21:09:20

<clutches towel and OFRS>

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 21:09:25

confused

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 21:09:46

What I really mean has the world gone a bit in one direction? You know the beauty pageants and recipes?

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 21:10:46

Like Harry Hairstyles?

HoneyDragon Sat 26-Jan-13 21:11:15

Whaaaaa?

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 21:11:22

MrsW the watchmaker can't see the 42 but MAY have Darwin in his sights grin

PoppyWearer Sat 26-Jan-13 21:11:45

You beat me to it, Sparklingbrook.

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 21:12:42

OFRS notwithstanding, WHAT GIVES?

Regards

Confused Of MN

mrsjay Sat 26-Jan-13 21:12:43

Mumsnet is like thinking or wondering out loud sometimes I like the weird and wonderful

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 21:14:15

mrsjay me too smile

HoneyDragon Sat 26-Jan-13 21:14:31

Huh?

Chubfuddler Sat 26-Jan-13 21:14:44

Maybe I have a different active convos to you. All the threads drawing my attention this evening are rather serious - rape myths and divorce and sexual abuse.

mrsjay Sat 26-Jan-13 21:14:44

I have just been on Active convos I am not seeing the bizarre tbh

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 21:16:53

But it is like the thinking out loud for the plain stupid or uneducated.

Like how do I lose a stone

Or how do I save money

How do i get a mortgage

What car is cheap to run

OverlyYappyAlways Sat 26-Jan-13 21:17:52

All looks normal for MN. I left this went to look was enthralled in random thread, of course people are a bit silly, did you just realise this?

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 21:18:42

Are the plain stupid or uneducated not allowed to post?

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 21:18:51

Maybe it's not the forum for you then OP. Perhaps you need to go in another direction. What do you want to talk about.

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 21:19:28

OP, people like to talk. Otherwise they would Google. What's your problem?

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 21:19:49

Maybe people just want to chat, OP? shock

What was it that made you take the time to post this thread?

You're doing exactly the same thing, it's hardly a pressing dilemma you've got and need advice/support you can't get anywhere else.

Of course MN is bizarre, if it wasn't it'd be NM.

mrsjay Sat 26-Jan-13 21:20:30

are we not allowed to be a bit daft it is after all social networking where people just well chat confused

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 21:20:49

I have been around for 5 years! It's just beginning to concern me. Really worried about other people and their down right lack of common sense and knowledge.

Are people really that daft?

manicinsomniac Sat 26-Jan-13 21:20:55

well it's not going to be the same as real life is it - It's a board full of anonymous usernames who are free to type whatever they want to with no fear of any judgement or consequence. Naturally it will attract a different kind of content to conversation around the school gates or in the office.

mrsjay Sat 26-Jan-13 21:22:10

first thread in active i read was somebody was was small in height talking about wedding dresses I fail to see what is daft about that

DoingTheSwanThing Sat 26-Jan-13 21:22:10

Apparently so.

Chubfuddler Sat 26-Jan-13 21:22:19

Have you met many people?

Some of them are deeply stupid.

Although I don't think any of your examples are particularly stupid.

kim147 Sat 26-Jan-13 21:23:43

Go to feminism. Some deep chats there.

I believe we were discussing socialism, constructivionism, patriarchal constructs and determinism - and that's just in one thread grin

mrsjay Sat 26-Jan-13 21:24:40

I believe we were discussing socialism, constructivionism, patriarchal constructs and determinism -

that is where the party is at grin

itsallinmyhead Sat 26-Jan-13 21:27:10

Bizarre, silly, whatever. I love MN. I'm not a particularly well known member but always find great support or a good laugh, dependant on what I'm looking for.

I'd say, if it doesn't 'float yer boat' don't log in.

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 21:28:43

Why isn't it ok to ask which car is cheap to run? People's experience can be v useful. That isn't a common sense issue.

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 21:29:03

'Are people really that daft?'

Not only do they want to chat, but they can be lonely, insecure, scared, isolated, excluded, living a lie, being abused etc etc etc.

The best thing about MN for me is that it takes my mind of the huge shit I've got going on elsewhere, it's a bit of escapism. Of course it's not very nice in a way using other people's problems to obscure my own, but I try to give something back to balance it out a bit.

Does this spell the end of the road for your MN days?

Maybe it's a bit like Neighbours/EEs and you can only watch them for so long before getting fucked off by the storyline recycling?

StickEmUp Sat 26-Jan-13 21:32:53

Im daft < hand up>

Well i am StickEmUp grin

littlemisssunny Sat 26-Jan-13 21:38:05

I started a thread which in hindsight was a stupid question and I admitted I was being unreasonable and I was wrong after replies explaining and saying I was unreasonable.

I still got called a twat! Only on mumsnet but I do love the randomness of it all I came from the dark side with fluffiness and tickers which was worse

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 21:41:05

I think my question has been answered. A site I have been around for a long time proving no use or giving any humour whatsoever.

My favourite threads are the ones by people saying they can't cope with the housework/do the homework/cooking et al. But they spend about 5 hours a day on MN typing crap.

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 21:42:25

Well, are you being useful or funny? Genuine question. btw, if anyone wants to be useful, I;ve got an employment law question on the go...

amillionyears Sat 26-Jan-13 21:42:53

Do you know all the answers op?

LadyBeagleEyes Sat 26-Jan-13 21:43:17

Stat an interesting thread then Op, go on.

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 21:45:16

Time to go then hf? If it's not amusing you any more. What do you want to talk about? Or maybe start a few threads that you think are a bit more high brow?

tethersend Sat 26-Jan-13 21:45:23

Pull my finger.

<lightens mood>

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 21:46:59

But if you're favorite threads are 'how do I do the housework/cooking', what makes them not daft?

They're the same as the ones you listed as being posted by stupid uneducated people.

It does come across as a bit superior telling posters you think they're stupid and uneducated, are you not then?

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 21:48:16

Sheless piggybacking on a thread - but I neeeeeeed help.

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 21:48:27

<pulls>

Ewwww, y'dirty uneducated fucker tethers <wafts it in OPs general direction>

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 21:48:35

Sheless? Bugger. Shameless.

amillionyears Sat 26-Jan-13 21:49:41

I think you are ready to graduate from MN.

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 21:50:02

I'd love to habbibu, but I'm stupid.

Educated, but thick with it IYSWIM.

usualsuspect Sat 26-Jan-13 21:51:08

If you don't like it...

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 21:51:27

I think my question has been answered. A site I have been around for a long time proving no use or giving any humour whatsoever.

Door's over there ->

itsallinmyhead Sat 26-Jan-13 21:51:56

Tethers shock grin

Agent got in there before I could grab it wink

HecateWhoopass Sat 26-Jan-13 21:52:09

I think it's fine.
You can find people talking about everything under the sun, by having a wander round the many, many topics.

I've found some amazing philosophical and theological debates, feminist discussions that have really educated me, fascinating insights into people's relationships, etc, etc.

I don't know what you're doing wrong to be unable to find any of that.

Do you just stick to aibu and chat?

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 21:53:26

Oh, just bump it, Zigzag - make it look busy and interesting...

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 21:53:54

What will she graduate with amillion?

BSc in Hoiking with Covert Passive Aggression?

PoppyWearer Sat 26-Jan-13 21:54:56

I am unashamedly educated, daft and completely lacking in common sense.

MN feels like home. <snuggles in>

Blimey tethers, what have you been eating?

BumpingFuglies Sat 26-Jan-13 21:55:01

Now then Agent be nice.

CaptainNancy Sat 26-Jan-13 21:55:14

Habbibu! Lovely to see you! smile

I am envy of OneHundredSecondsOfSolitude.... oh for that many <<sigh>>

tethersend Sat 26-Jan-13 21:55:24

I know, Agent. It smells worse than France.

habbibu, I have posted on your thread with a meaningless collection of words which may or may not bear a passing resemblance to fact.

No need to thank me.

EduCated Sat 26-Jan-13 21:55:28

You want educated people?

Look no further wink

Fakebook Sat 26-Jan-13 21:57:34

Really worried about other people and their down right lack of common sense and knowledge.

I agree. Thickos.

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 21:59:23

But I will, tethers. It's my mission, for the brief moments I'm here, to make MN a Politer Place.

Hello, Cap'n! <doffs hat>

Valpollicella Sat 26-Jan-13 21:59:46

Indeed. Tap my heed. Is hollow

itsallinmyhead Sat 26-Jan-13 22:00:59

Habbibu, I'd say tethers is bang on in your thread.

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 22:01:19

It's just the silly phrases like hoiking, MN royalty (wtf), aunty flo, fruit bowls, fruit shoots et al.

usualsuspect Sat 26-Jan-13 22:02:04

Fruit bowls?

EduCated Sat 26-Jan-13 22:02:25

Apart from MN royalty, I hear all of those in real life. And it's been like this as long as I've been here confused

amillionyears Sat 26-Jan-13 22:02:28

Agent. I dont know. I am too stupid to be able to tell you!

KenLeeeeeee Sat 26-Jan-13 22:03:21

Ha! If you think questions about cars & mortgages make internet people seem daft, you're in for a shock looking at this: www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/dumbest-things-ever-said-on-the-internet

usualsuspect Sat 26-Jan-13 22:04:01

I've never seen anyone fruit bowl on MN.

amillionyears Sat 26-Jan-13 22:05:17

hf, look and post in different categories.
Have a look on the Full Topics list.
There is some educated stuuf going on, and perhaps you could offer more advice with peoples problems.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen Sat 26-Jan-13 22:05:23

Oh this is just a stealthy

I think you're all sad wankers thread.

Drip fed much?

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:05:35

I think this thread is bizarre TBH. You either want to be on MN or you don't.

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 22:06:27

<growls at Bumping>

I love it being described as 'Le Pong' Tethers grin It brings up all the old stereotyping/rivalry between us and the Cheese Eaters.

Nobody uses 'aunty flo' do they OP? I've never seen it. They're just in jokes.

Do they make you feel a bit excluded?

KenLeeeeeee Sat 26-Jan-13 22:06:34

Oh my, what if the OP is Sharon & we've all been rumbled?

amillionyears Sat 26-Jan-13 22:07:23

Have a break for a month.
You will either miss it, or forget all about it.

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:08:29

But any group of people sharing a "speech community" of sorts for a while will develop their own terminology - I defy you to find anywhere that doesn't. I don't like some of it, but don't see why people who do should have to accommodate my tastes - why should they adhere to your rules/tastes?

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 22:09:57

I suppose it's like meeting honey bowls at the school gates and having an epiphany.

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:11:52

Honey bowls? Fruit bowls? WHAT?

WorraLiberty Sat 26-Jan-13 22:12:20

OP I've got a good idea

Why don't you start an interesting thread and we'll all post on it?

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:13:11

She has - it's about the changing usage of the word bowls which is bewildering anyone over 40. Or maybe just me.

Valpollicella Sat 26-Jan-13 22:13:19

Wha'? Honey bowls? Hf, do tell....? I m here alllll the time and not a fruiting clue as to honey bowls?

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:13:52

I have never met a honey bowl at the school gates.

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 22:14:31

Why should the OP bother when we're all posting on her uninteresting thread worra?

Too thick to know the difference, see?

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:14:42

So there is a bowls thread? confused

usualsuspect Sat 26-Jan-13 22:15:23

I'm confused with all the bowls.

usualsuspect Sat 26-Jan-13 22:16:28

What about cereal bowls, can we discuss them?

TheVermiciousKnid Sat 26-Jan-13 22:18:02

What about bowels? Mine are rather bizarre at the moment. And we won't even mention Tether's bowels.

TheVermiciousKnid Sat 26-Jan-13 22:18:35

Would you like to know more about my bowels? They're very interesting, as well as educated.

oohlaalaa Sat 26-Jan-13 22:18:43

hf128219 - I remember you, started a thread years ago, with some really juicy celeb gossip, and we never did find out what it was!!

Can you PM me this gossip now? I need a pick me up, as I've spent the evening trying to get my tax return done.

Thanks

LadyBeagleEyes Sat 26-Jan-13 22:18:47

Wot are honey bowls?
Op I took the liberty of advance searching you, and you've been here for ages and seem eminently sensible.
Maybe time to take a break ?

WorraLiberty Sat 26-Jan-13 22:19:07

I had a decent bowl movement tonight if that's any help?

I moved it from one side of the table to another.

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:19:19

Or Crown Green Bowls-can we discuss that? Or goldfish bowls?

Valpollicella Sat 26-Jan-13 22:20:24

oohlalala. have GOSSIP but I will require bribery. If you need a fix.

<jus' saying>

LadyBeagleEyes Sat 26-Jan-13 22:20:32

Oh, and when I say sensible, I agree with a lot of what you've said.
So, clearly eminently sensible grin

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:22:02

No, this is the bowls thread. I think. But spending too long on here can make you think the world is a little strange, and at that point it is a good idea to drift away...

FunnysInLaJardin Sat 26-Jan-13 22:22:05

oh it takes a while to get used to MN, but once you get it YOU WILL NEVER LEAVE a bit like Royston Vasey

CheCazzo Sat 26-Jan-13 22:23:23

I hereby vote this the shittest thread ever.

usualsuspect Sat 26-Jan-13 22:24:07

It's a fascinating thread about different bowls though.

HoneyDragon Sat 26-Jan-13 22:25:03

Kniddy

The only interesting thing about your bowels is that they are full of tortoise hmm

FunnysInLaJardin Sat 26-Jan-13 22:26:04

and as some folk say here in Jersey if you don't like it, there's a boat in the morning...........

TheVermiciousKnid Sat 26-Jan-13 22:26:45

sad

No, the tortoise (plus accordion) has now left my bowels.

FunnysInLaJardin Sat 26-Jan-13 22:27:17

wait Che wait it could morph into something good

HoneyDragon Sat 26-Jan-13 22:27:42

Well at least you got rid of the evidence

Valpollicella Sat 26-Jan-13 22:27:55

Let's all learn about bowls

EduCated Sat 26-Jan-13 22:28:34

<waiting>

TheVermiciousKnid Sat 26-Jan-13 22:29:01

True, but rather foolishly I posted about my crime on Mumsnet and now it's only question of time before they catch up with me and I'm carted off to prison. sad

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops Sat 26-Jan-13 22:29:13

Fruit bowls, honey bowls...am I thick or just not with the in-crowd lingo?

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 22:29:59

Fruit bowls
Salad bowls
Playing bowls
Soup bowls
Finger bowls
Cereal bowls
Pudding bowls
Pasta bowls
Mixing bowls

HoneyDragon Sat 26-Jan-13 22:30:11

Even the in crowd aren't in in this one

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:30:34

Sick bowls?

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:31:26

Bowls full of, um, sherry? Several of them?

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops Sat 26-Jan-13 22:31:26

No YANBU, based on this thread, MN is bizarre.

FlouncingMintyy Sat 26-Jan-13 22:31:55

Aww, I love it when you do your occasional pop-ins hf.

I am convinced you are a regular under an alter-ego smile.

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:32:22

What is a honey bowl, though, hf?

MrsWembley Sat 26-Jan-13 22:33:44

Oh, posted, left for a bit (of bubbles and Pirates), then returned to what has become a most random selection of posters and posts.

Suddenly it's all about bowls/bowels...

I believe the phrase is WTF?

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 22:36:04

Honey bowl is for mixing
Mixing honeycomb

LayMizzRarb Sat 26-Jan-13 22:36:24

* I think my question has been answered. A site I have been around for a long time proving no use or giving any humour whatsoever*
Bye.

tethersend Sat 26-Jan-13 22:37:47

Tell us about the honey, mummy.

Agent, DP is French and upon smelling LePong, me and DD were almost prostrate with revulsion, whilst he, patriotic to the last, declared it "Not that bad". Well, "Not zat bad" to be exact.

Samu2 Sat 26-Jan-13 22:38:20

Well, this place does seem to be a bit bizarre in a very good way. Such a great mixture of people.

I just came over from the dark side too and apart from the layout which I find a bit tricky here, this place seems awesome!

Great to so see so many sarcastic, witty and intelligent people.

Although I am not witty or intelligent myself ;)

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:38:54

Ooh honeycomb-like Crunchies? Why the epiphany at the school gate with the bowl though?

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:39:07

And you meet these at the school gates? I think I'd rather meet the tins with the finished honeycomb in them.

Maryz Sat 26-Jan-13 22:39:59

So is this where the bunfight is tonight?

[hopeful]

OneHundredSecondsofSolitude Sat 26-Jan-13 22:41:16

WHERES's THE FUCKING GODSIP? I've been waiting insincere 2007

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:42:31

Maryz no buns. Only fruit and Crunchies.

AgentZigzag Sat 26-Jan-13 22:42:56

Hahaha tethers grin

Did he twizzle his waxed mustachio while saying it?

Something I've wondered about for decades has he ever seen 'Allo 'Allo? And does he find it funny?

I watched a prog about it once and apparently German people find it hilarious, wondered how it came across to someone from France.

LadyBeagleEyes Sat 26-Jan-13 22:43:39

Hello Maryz, where've you been?
You've missed the best stuff ever, I bet you'll regret not checking in.
Actually, that was a lie.

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 22:45:18

Already there have been comments like 'bye' and 'there's the door'

So rude and juvenile.

Gossip?

Oh gosh there is so much. The ginger nut has created life for a start.

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:47:49

hf now you are being bizarre.

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:49:38

But there have also been comments about meeting honey bowls at the school gates. I'll grant you they're not rude and juvenile, but I think we could safely apply silly or daft. Are there two of you posting at once?

Valpollicella Sat 26-Jan-13 22:51:06

The ginger nut has created life

Sounds like a Cold War secret code passed on on a bench somewhere in the Elephant & Castle

Valpollicella Sat 26-Jan-13 22:51:53

in 1954

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:52:16

You have it, Val. It's the new way to contact assets. And it's perfect!

hf128219 Sat 26-Jan-13 22:53:28

NW from E&W, Look up.

habbibu Sat 26-Jan-13 22:57:06

And on that note, night all!

itsallinmyhead Sat 26-Jan-13 22:57:20

I have a rude and juvenile joke.

I went clubbing last night and sniffed some coke....those fucking bubbles tickle. BOOM! wink

Shaky Sat 26-Jan-13 22:58:15

<boggles>

I haven't got a clue about anything anymore.

-- gives up trying to make sense of anything on here --

<shrugs and goes back to TIO>

Sparklingbrook Sat 26-Jan-13 22:58:54

I went through customs and they asked if I had anything to declare. I said 'Only the crack in my arse'. <arf>

Rude.Juvenile. grin

Shaky Sat 26-Jan-13 22:59:38

strikethorough fail, sorry

Oh Goody!

It's playing BOULES! I cannot believe I am the first person to point that out! I'm not normally a pedant

Yeah, mumsnet is full of people asking where they can buy cheap fags, discussing bugaboos and tesco clubcards, asking about winter cycling clothes, talking about whether people have blinds or curtains in their kitchens and all things Kate Middleton.

I suggest that to combat this lack of intelligence that can be found on mumsnet, start some intelligent threads on interesting topics - people will join you. Then you won't have to think that mn is bizarre and thinking out loud for the plain stupid or uneducated.

Maggie I was talking about Lawn Bowls not Boules or Pétanque!

I did start an interesting thread last night . There was one reply on the lines of suggesting I was a school girl.

Yes I think MN is at times weird, expecially reading a thread where she takes her BF cum boak innanconainer and uses it as seasoning ina. Resturant!!!

Apparently it arrouses her!

Who does that, Atinkum? So I know who to run screaming from should I ever cross paths with her

The puppet shagging is surreal, but I quite like that.
