to have sent these nachos back?

I frickin' love nachos.

So tonight I ordered some as a starter. When the bowl came I looked and couldn't see any cheese, had a quick poke around and still couldn't see any. So I got up and asked him "I know this sounds stupid but is there suppose to be cheese on these?"

He replied "yeah but we've run out"

Nachos is my favourite treat ever and without cheese then in my opinion you cannot call them nachos!

prettypolly1 Thu 24-Jan-13 00:10:48

shock outrageous!

Were you not told this when you ordered?! Poor service...

They gave you flavourless Doritos? No acceptable

YANBU

VBisme Thu 24-Jan-13 00:11:30

YADNBU

UnicornWings Thu 24-Jan-13 00:12:15

No it was never mentioned when I ordered!

I was given flavourless Doritos with a smidge of salsa and sour cream.

The cheese is what makes the nachos.

prettypolly1 Thu 24-Jan-13 00:23:01

The nachos should be mainly gooey melted cheese in my opinion....it's a more important ingredient than the nachos themselves.

You've made me hungry sad

I'd have said I don't want them without cheese, that is just plain old corn chips with sour cream and some salsa Ick! The cheese is the best part.

Jacksmania Thu 24-Jan-13 01:00:18

WTF???

I'm surprised you didn't throw them at him.

"Yeah but we've run out" --- what kind of a restaurant runs out of cheese???????

TheDetective Thu 24-Jan-13 01:13:10

YADNBU!!

Nachos minus cheese = sawdust! Bleurghhhh!

Be warned though... I went to a wetherspoons with DP last week. As I perused the menu, I spotted Nachos and smiled with glee. Til I saw the calorie content next to them! It was over 1400. What the actual fuck?! I triple checked to make sure it wasn't a sharing dish. No. It wasn't a sharing dish. Bloody hell!

I'll stick to places that don't specify the calorie content and ruin my meal next time!!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Thu 24-Jan-13 01:24:44

YANBU.

rumbelina Thu 24-Jan-13 04:54:21

Was this at a Wetherspoons? That's happened to me before.

MidnightMasquerader Thu 24-Jan-13 05:11:26

Actually, it's guacamole that makes nachos, but still, YANBU.

<mind boggling at calorie count>

YorkshireDeb Thu 24-Jan-13 05:59:18

I had nachos for starter on Tuesday night. THREE CHEESE nachos. Brilliant I thought - three lots of cheese sounds even better. They forgot to mention one of the cheeses was stinky blue cheese. Urgh! Ruined the whole thing. X

TheArbiter Thu 24-Jan-13 06:28:00

Ridiculous! I'd have just taken nachos off the menu entirely. You can't have cheeseless nachos.

Jacksmania Thu 24-Jan-13 06:32:37

It's cheese that makes nachos. Not that green crap.

<gavel>

Chopstheduck Thu 24-Jan-13 06:36:54

1400 calories for nachos?? I'm on a diet and I still eat nachos, and it was nowhere near 1400!

Nachos without cheese is acceptable if you have runny american tinned cheese with jalapeño for dipping. No cheese whatsoever is WRONG!

Tee2072 Thu 24-Jan-13 06:37:03

Blue cheese on nachos?!?! What kind of heathen restaurants are you people going to????

xkcdfangirl Thu 24-Jan-13 06:42:22

Blue cheese is a marvellous taste combo with chilli - My absolute favourite would be nachos grande with chilli-non-carne and a couple of slices of stilton on top. It sounds weird but unless you hate silton anyway it's a revelation!

MidnightMasquerader Thu 24-Jan-13 06:42:51

Tinned cheese..? Tinned cheese......?

<braces self for explanation>

MidnightMasquerader Thu 24-Jan-13 06:44:12

Actually blue cheese, mixed with guacamole, is divine. 'Roquamole', if you will...

theplodder Thu 24-Jan-13 06:48:40

reading these comments it's little wonder so many people are obese.

Chopstheduck Thu 24-Jan-13 07:03:49

canned cheese or this

and it's actually quite low in fat and calories! I have the Herrs atm and a serving is 35 cals and about 2g fat. It's very cheesy, like squirty cheese.

CitrusyOne Thu 24-Jan-13 07:06:11

I once went to an establishment that served the bottom half of a bag of Doritos (ie all the corners of the triangles but no actual triangles)

There WAS cheese.........just not melted.

Almost as bad as no cheese at all!

Tee2072 Thu 24-Jan-13 07:10:37

All of the Mexicans I know (and I knew many, thanks to a Mexican sister in law) are rolling around and crying about blue cheese on nachos.

Cheddar and or Monterey Jack.

::gavel::

Chopstheduck Thu 24-Jan-13 07:11:54

cheddar shock

Nooo, mozzarella, so it goes all stringy when you try to separate them!

firesidechat Thu 24-Jan-13 07:39:08

Chopstheduck where do you get that stuff from?

Had some gorgeous runny cheese in a can with chilli when I went to Florida years ago. I loved it and have been trying to find it ever since.

It always looked like it was loaded with every E number under the sun but tasted yum.

YorkshireDeb Thu 24-Jan-13 07:40:00

theplodder that's just mean! X

OTTMummA Thu 24-Jan-13 07:44:23

Vie cinema nachos are made with tinned cheese, used to work there as a student. I now take my own snacks, just saying.

PickleSarnie Thu 24-Jan-13 07:46:58

We ordered "pitta bread and hummus" once.

They plonked a plate of pitta bread but no hummus down and walked off.

When we asked where the hummus was they shrugged and told us they'd run out. Didn't they think we would notice that the main constituent of the dish was missing?! Didn't they think we would notice that the bread was fairly tasteless?! What's just as bad is that we could see Sainsburys from where we were sat. Almost offered to go get them some.

CinnamonCandle Thu 24-Jan-13 07:51:01

I sent nachos back when they had no guacamole! I wasn't paying £7.95 for cheese, salsa and soured cream. But no cheese is much worse!

Chopstheduck Thu 24-Jan-13 08:18:06

firesidechat - unfortunately have to get it from specialist american grocers and pay through the neck for it sad We made odd trips to one about 20 miles from us and stock up!

firesidechat Thu 24-Jan-13 08:40:13

Thanks so much for that Chopstheduck.

Will get on Google and search for American grocers. Not near London unfortunately which is where I assume they will be.

I just want to try it again and see if it's as good as I remember.

fireside: There's likely a generic import shop within 20 miles from you that might have it? Thoguh they are actually surprisingly difficult to find via google!

I love the tinned stuff, it's amazing grin DP and I make ourown nachos these days too, good fun smile

firesidechat Thu 24-Jan-13 08:59:27

ConfusedPixie - just found too shops and would you believe it, they are where we lived before we moved here. Now a 2 hour drive away.

Good news is that they are very close to my parents, so they may get a surprise visit very soon.

Chopstheduck Thu 24-Jan-13 09:40:45

firesidechat -

The shop we use is online here they are pretty friendly too, and not all stuff is available in store or posted on the website, so it's worth asking if there is stuff you want that you can't see. We got the Harr's cheese in a can from them, but they only see to have a jar online. They are Aldershot and Guildford based.

Some stuff thankfully is now getting more common. Asda now stock marshmallow fluff which I used to have to pay a fortune for imported. Just need them to start selling Taco Bell sauces now! Oh and hooters wing sauce...

melika Thu 24-Jan-13 09:48:16

Had similiar happen in Pizzahut, big plate to share, but they were burnt(not just a little, almost cremated). DH said out loud,'you've got to be joking!' Waiter asks 'what's the problem?'

After a little discussion, we requested manager who also couldn't see a problem!

Hence, we left.

BupcakesAndCunting Thu 24-Jan-13 09:52:52

I would have called the cops.

It is a crime.

At least 500g of strong cheese needs to be piled on to nachos otherwise they are just tortilla chips with all sauce chucked on.

shock no cheese????

U cannot have nachos with no cheese!!!

YorkshireDeb Thu 24-Jan-13 10:01:51

This thread keeps making me think of one of my favourite jokes: which cheese belongs to me? Nacho cheese! (You have to say it like Nat - yo to make it work). He he! <tumbleweed blows across the thread> x

BupcakesAndCunting Thu 24-Jan-13 10:03:12

If you are near a Selfridges, they carry stock of american groceries. I think they may be a bit more pricey than you'd pay in America but thems the breaks when you want to fill your fat hamster face with peanut butter M&Ms blush sad

PartTimeModel Thu 24-Jan-13 10:04:31

YANBU. Cheese is the whole point of doritos (that and the rest of the gunge)

I ordered something once in an expensive place since closed down that came with a side order of greek salad. No feta and no olives. When I complained they claimed greek salad did not contain cheese or olives hmm We didn't go back but our friends in trading standards did and had a lovely time pulling their menu apart grin

LadyBeagleEyes Thu 24-Jan-13 10:08:26

Name and shame this place Op.
That is outrageous shock

firesidechat Thu 24-Jan-13 10:32:42

Chopstheduck - those I the shops I found earlier. My parents live in Farnborough so very close to Aldershot and not too far from Guildford.

OP sorry for moving away from your original question, but if you hadn't posted I would never have solved my craving for dubious American foodstuffs.

By the way YANBU. I would definitely have sent the nachos back.

firesidechat Thu 24-Jan-13 10:36:01

I can't justify an online order for only the cheese stuff, so is there anything else American that would be worth getting? Thought their chocolate was revolting so maybe not that.

Chopstheduck Thu 24-Jan-13 10:56:39

depends really what you like. I love -
wing sauces
popcorn seasoning (esp ranch)
potato seasoning (liek sprinkle for chips)
bbq sauces - spicy JD sauces, etc
hooters breading for wings
pop tarts (wild grape - yum!)
Reeses peanut butter
Aunt jemima's pancake syrup
Heinz Dill relish
Herrs blue cheese buffalo puff crisps
twizzlers

They also do a corn dog mix which is fab to try if you've never made corn dogs. The kids went nuts over them. I found it a bit sweet though, and prefer to make my own batter.

DH and I went to Indianapolis this time last year for the Superbowl - we flew business class and both brought back a second case full of groceries!

Off to Canada this time, doubt we will get so many goodies there. We are both food obsessed though, and bring back tons from every country we visit. I came back from Italy last time with 4 gallons of olive oil, and 10 bags of pasta flour blush

dana4nyc Thu 24-Jan-13 18:30:16

Chopstheduck not meaning to hijack the thread but I wanted to say thank you for the link to the American foodstuffs website! I'm an American and been living here 5 years and only now find this site! I'm so excited but gutted as well because we're moving to the UAE in a few months! I feel terrible about all the parcels I asked my parents to send from home now!!

kitsmummy Thu 24-Jan-13 18:35:11

I once ordered nachos and once I'd tasted them I had to call the waiter over, feeling quite embarassed for him I virtually whispered "excuse me, this seems to be mayonnaise on the nachose, not sour cream.". To which he replied "yeah, we ran out of sour cream" and walked off.

Oh well that's ok then, as long as you've put something else white on that will be absolutely fine.

10 years on and I'm still bitter about it.

Chopstheduck Fri 25-Jan-13 07:22:40

grin Dana. I bet it is cheaper though, for your family to sent parcels! We couldn't believe how cheap some of the stuff was last time we went, that we'd been spending a fortune for here.

ps, you from New York? Are you a Giants fan? grin
