....its really starting to get on my wick!

I have a small crafty type business/hobby which I sell mostly on Facebook. Only started a few months ago and its going well.

In the last few days I have been asked on 4 separate occasions where I buy my supplies from.. Everyone who has asked has been direct competition.

AIBU to be a selfish bitch and not tell them?

Tbh, they aren't hard to find if you bang some key words into Ebay so why message me?

I wouldn't dream of asking where someone got their stock, I would just try and find them myself if I wanted them that bad! As it happens I'm not a copycat and use my own head!

<dons flameproof suit for selfish bitch replies>

Catchingmockingbirds Sat 12-Jan-13 19:18:42

If it's competition asking you then no I don't think yabu in not telling them.

Bearmonkeysmum Sat 12-Jan-13 19:20:52

Yanbu & definitely not a selfish bitch!

How cheeky of them!

MrsRajeshKoothrappali Sat 12-Jan-13 19:20:54

Just say that a friend of the family gets it for you.

BonkeyMollocks Sat 12-Jan-13 19:24:20

Ah feel bit better now!

I also think its very cheeky!

Use some bloody initiative!

I may start telling them that I get them handmade in my own home by squirrels!

BonkeyMollocks Sat 12-Jan-13 19:26:07

<Completely of subject>

MrsR

I have just had a nosey at your profile coz I'm nosey - just about to pm you if thats ok. smile

badtemperedaldbitch Sat 12-Jan-13 19:27:00

Yes, let them do their own hard work...

Say.... I can tell you, but then I'd have to kill you
Twitch when you say it too

DamnBamboo Sat 12-Jan-13 19:27:12

Just don't respond. YANBU to not tell them

Chottie Sat 12-Jan-13 19:32:51

No, you are not. You are running a business not a charity.

namechanger11111 Sat 12-Jan-13 19:47:40

I do something similar and i get people asking all the time.

I just say I'm sorry but it took me a long time to find my suppliers.

Most people are ok with that but i had one who kept going on with but why can't you tell me. I just ignored her from then on.

The thing is it has taken me a long time and a lot of research and money so there's no way I'm going to tell someone my suppliers and have them sell the same items as me in the same place.

Just say no they're rude to even ask.

RedToothbrush Sat 12-Jan-13 19:47:57

Don't tell them. Just because they are friends doesn't give them the right to ask you things that could impact on your income. Its as simple as that.

HOWEVER if you are selling just on facebook, you probably are relying a great deal on goodwill and friendships, so I would say to seriously consider broadening your horizons so that a) you feel under less obligation b) people who you are selling too also don't feel like you potentially 'owe them' something in terms of their custom and/or contacts (FTR you don't).

The problem with mixing business and pleasure is it always ends up putting you in some sort of awkward situation.

BonkeyMollocks Sat 12-Jan-13 19:58:26

Red they aren't friends - just random other page owners that are asking, people who do the same craft!

Most of my customers are strangers who have come across my page because I have worked my arse off to get it out there, so I am buggered if I am going to make it easy for someone else. <bitch again> wink

namechanger I'm glad there is someone else who feels the same! that is it!

Theicingontop Sat 12-Jan-13 20:00:24

I had another cake lady ask me how to do one of the designs I put on my cakes. She started her message with "I know this might sound cheeky but..." Yeah damn right it's cheeky! Yanbu.

gimmecakeandcandy Sat 12-Jan-13 20:01:08

Could you pm me a link to your page? Would love to see what you sell x

Theicingontop Sat 12-Jan-13 20:01:58

Ooh me too me too smile

NcNcNcNc Sat 12-Jan-13 20:06:57

I have this all the time! I took ages to source my supplies and then direct competitors contact me through etsy and ask if I'll tell them where from!

They usually start with a 'Sorry to be cheeky but...'

BonkeyMollocks Sat 12-Jan-13 20:13:56

Lazy bastards! angry

MarmaladeSkies Sat 12-Jan-13 20:14:36

YADNBU.It'd be madness to give your competition that information.

And can I please have a pm with the link too?

BonkeyMollocks Sat 12-Jan-13 20:20:40

You nosey buggers! grin

BrianCoxandTheTempleofDOOM Sat 12-Jan-13 20:25:14

YANBU

<another who wants the link to your page>

ArkadyRose Sat 12-Jan-13 20:37:51

Just ignore them; you're certainly not obliged to give competitors a hand up by giving them the details of your suppliers - let them do their own research!

yanbu ive had it too.

i also had one "friend" who never had any interest in what i did, then suddenly she had a page, and copied all my designs badly needless to say... she got very blocked grin

would also love a pm cause im nosey i like to support other craft peeps smile

MarmaladeSkies Sat 12-Jan-13 20:56:33

NcNcNcNc Sat 12-Jan-13 21:19:51

Thank you that's really nice of you smile

I've been in quite a few magazines but that doesn't always translate to sales. I do it as a hobby but it would be great to do full time.

BonkeyMollocks Sat 12-Jan-13 21:20:28

envy of magazines!

How long have you been doing it for Nc?

bedmonster Sat 12-Jan-13 21:27:43

Lovely stuff bonkey, would you mind me asking where you source your.... grin
Actually, saw something id like to order, how do I go about it? Only looking on my phone so will actually order in the week when on laptop?

NcNcNcNc Sat 12-Jan-13 21:27:51

Started when I was on maternity leave with youngest dd who is now 3.

I've been in 4 magazines and 2 more asked me but I missed the deadline to reply grin

I had a 2 page spread in Beads and Beyond <get me!>

Always makes me think of those magazines at the end of Have I Got News For You grin grin

LiveItUp Sat 12-Jan-13 22:19:02

quote that is sooooo cute!

DreamingOfTheMaldives Sat 12-Jan-13 23:19:24

If you don't mind them having access to the same things as you then why don't you offer to supply them, for a higher price of course, and make some money out of it.

NcNcNcNc Sun 13-Jan-13 17:20:22

Dreaming - that's probably the problem with the thing they want me to tell them where I got it from - it enables them to copy my ideas and I'd rather they had to put some effort in grin

At a craft fair my friend was asked not only where she got all her supplies but also how she made each item grin grin

StuntGirl Sun 13-Jan-13 17:27:07

Definitely not BU. Cheeky sods.

A jewellery designer I used to love quit a few years ago, as a last hurrah she gave workahops where she shared techniques and sold a book with all her contacts and suppliers listed in it. But only because she was leaving the industry altogether!
