Have love film and have just started series one episode one. Am actually really excited blush

We've recently been rewatching them, this time with our teenagers and I've really enjoyed them.

Have fun!

I started watching Buffy aged 32 when I was on Mat Leave. Was a good distraction.

laptopcomputer Thu 27-Dec-12 18:15:34

Buffy is one of the best things ever on TV. I re-watched them all last year in my 40s - can't wait to let DS watch it too :-)

InNeedOfBrandyButter Thu 27-Dec-12 18:16:31

Aww she's jut met angel for the first time! grin

whistlestopcafe Thu 27-Dec-12 18:17:14

Ooh I loved Buffy! I was thinking of introducing ds1 to Buffy, he is 8 is that too young? He loves Doctor Who.

I wasn't even a teenager when it first started and I originally watched it (late 20's iirc) so definitely watch and enjoy grin

PermanentlyOnEdge Thu 27-Dec-12 18:18:37

I first watched Buffy at age 30. I'm now 42, have owned the seven season box set since it was released on DVD, and am currently at the end of season one for the eighth time! I unashamedly enjoy it, laugh at it, cry at it and think the writing is incredibly good, and rave about it to those who haven't watched it, most of whom clearly think I'm bonkers. I really don't care. It's ace. Watch every episode with a clear conscience OP and enjoy it!

Dawndonna Thu 27-Dec-12 18:19:13

We watched them all from love film last year. It was great!

Wommer Thu 27-Dec-12 18:19:54

Awwww this takes me back! Loved this as a wannabe alternative (obv very cool in a moody wears too much black sort of way) teenager grin
I was defo emo before emo was invented!

Stupid Netflix doesn't have it sad

2kidsintow Thu 27-Dec-12 18:22:02

I own it from loving it as a 20-something. I've been trying to convince my DD to watch it for months as I know she loves Dr Who. She watched Bones when bored one evening, read that David Borneaz was in Buffy and wanted to watch it finally as a result. She thinks it is fab and I keep going around saying "I told you so!"

As far as an 8 year old..... a lot of Buffys are rated 15 so I'm unsure about that one.

InNeedOfBrandyButter Thu 27-Dec-12 18:22:31

Get a free love film trial and have a buffy marathon wommer!

PearlyWhites Thu 27-Dec-12 18:22:38

Gosh no I love buffs

PearlyWhites Thu 27-Dec-12 18:23:04

Buffy stupid auto correct

TandB Thu 27-Dec-12 18:23:10

Do it! I watched Buffy for the first time in my mid-20s. I finally finished the last series when I was in my 30s.

I might watch it again now!

TandB Thu 27-Dec-12 18:23:32

Not that it is to ogle Spike or anything, oh no, not me!

InNeedOfBrandyButter Thu 27-Dec-12 18:25:18

Oo I forgot about spike ahhhh mmmm

TandB Thu 27-Dec-12 18:26:07

In his coat.

Binkybix Thu 27-Dec-12 18:26:17

I've just started watching Angel for the first time - never to old!!

JesusInTheCabbageVan Thu 27-Dec-12 18:28:00

Buffy's brilliant! Have to laugh thouh at the sheer number of times both Spike and Angel get chained up naked grin Evidently teenage girls are a bit kinkier than we give them credit for.

InNeedOfBrandyButter Thu 27-Dec-12 18:29:49

I've never watched angel, will start after all of buffy!

TandB Thu 27-Dec-12 18:31:08

Angel's a bit darker.

But Spike is in it. In his coat.

InNeedOfBrandyButter Thu 27-Dec-12 18:35:11

I can't believe it started in 97! Fuck I feel old and I'm only 24shock

Tee2072 Thu 27-Dec-12 18:37:36

If it wasn't for Buffy I wouldn't live in the UK or be married or have a son.

soontobeburns Thu 27-Dec-12 18:43:41

I never watched it first time around as I was too young (only 7 when it started) I am debating about getting the dvds as it seems like I would love it.

I thinly I might now lol thanks op and no you are never too old.

Btw Hex is an awesome show :-)

Tee2072 Thu 27-Dec-12 18:44:53

Hex is crap compared to Buffy!

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 18:46:10

Nope, never too late! Buffy is an amazingly crafted piece of television imo. The earlier series obviously look quite dated now but it stands the test of time otherwise. So, so good. We have the dvd boxset and I re-watch it frequently.

Angel was mostly utter bollocks in my opinion though, although if you do decide to watch it I suggest watching Buffy/Angel in tandem so you get the right running order! Some seriously excellent crossover episodes ( I Will Remember You anyone?!)

QuickQuickSleigh Thu 27-Dec-12 18:48:49

I watched the lot on bt vision when on mat leave, it was fab! Enjoy smile

Buffy rocks! The writing's really good and it's very funny at times but leaves me sobbing at others (Becoming, part 2 anyone?). DH and I are both huge fans.

LaVitaBellissima Thu 27-Dec-12 18:50:24

I loved Buffy!

Has anyone been watching Teen Wolf the new series?, Spike is in it as a Werewolf hunter grin smile blush

Acandlelitshadow Thu 27-Dec-12 18:51:25

Missed it first time round due to DC being tinies. Got a (VHS!) boxset in a chazzer but still left it a few years. When I did get round to it I loved it. Youngest DC scrounged the set off me (was going to recycle the vids after watching) also loved it and now won't part with it hmm

I scored 'Angel' at the same time but have been sidetracked. This thread has given me a kick up the arse to concentrate grin

JakeBullet Thu 27-Dec-12 18:51:44

YANBU.....have just watched them all again in my mid40s. The writing is fab.....and of course there is Spike from Season 2 onwards. Go for it I say......might watch a couple of episodes myself tonight as its child free here.

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 18:53:46

I think I've cried at every single series finale blush And then some of the sadder mid-series ones which I won't mention because I don't want to spoil it for brandy

Spero Thu 27-Dec-12 18:57:37

I started watching it in late twenties. Never thought it was 'for teenagers' - it is brilliant in every way. Never understood why things get put in boxes for certain age groups because of it's genre. That's like thinking South Park is suitable for 6 year olds because it's a cartoon.

Buffy's great! DH and I re-watched the whole 7 seasons an episode a night a few years ago pre DS grin

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 19:03:28

Well it was created as a teen show, and its entire premise was based on the idea that 'high school is hell'. Its just that bloody brilliant it transcends age demographics grin

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Thu 27-Dec-12 19:12:40

I love Buffy. The first ever episode I saw was The Pack, on BBC2 in about 1998. I was hooked from the moment it started.

DH has been insisting I watch Supernatural for ages. I finally gave in and bought him the box set for Christmas - we're 6 episodes in and I'm really enjoying it. Similar sort of vein to Buffy (hunting down evil) but a bit darker. Of course it will never be as good as Buffy, but it helps that Jensen Ackles is easy on the eye, though he will never replace Spike in my affections wink

margarethamilton Thu 27-Dec-12 19:57:21

YANBU. It's ace and I'm going to dig out my DVD box set now!

Spero Thu 27-Dec-12 20:17:45

I don't agree it was created as a 'teen' show. Joss Whedon said he was pissed off with the blonde girl getting killed horror film trope so he wanted to create a kick ass heroine. But even if it was, it transcended that demographic immediately.

And even if box set came plastered with stickers saying 'under 30s only, step away you sad elderly loser' I would simply ignore them. If somethings good, its good. Age is just a number.

alcibiades Thu 27-Dec-12 20:47:55

OK, if we're going to do ages-when-we-first-watched-Buffy, I beat all of you because I was in my 50s!

I think it was back in 2000 when my daughter (then in her middle 20s) suggested I watch a couple of episodes. I knew of the show, because my son (then in his early 20s) was a fan. I'd dismissed the show because, you know, cute blonde kicks ass, it's a teen show, etc.

The two episodes my daughter made encouraged me to watch were from season 4: "Hush" and "Restless". I won't say anything about those episodes in order to avoid spoiling them for new viewers. But those who recall those episodes will know why I looked like this -> shock, but in a good way. (I then borrowed my son's DVDs to watch from the beginning, and then went on to watch every episode until the very end.)

For a TV show that was marketed as a "teen show", it's at times very deep, with much more adult/philosophical themes as the show developed. I think the first few seasons are ok for youngsters aged 11 or so, but the later seasons do get very dark at times (but are good for prompting discussions). When the show started on UK TV, it was shown in the 6 pm slot (because, you know, it's a teen show), but as the seasons went on and the show got darker, there was an edited version at 6 pm and an unedited version at 10 pm.

I liked Giles – especially when at moments of stress he polished his glasses with his tie. I didn't care so much for Angel. Spike – well, his appeal is timeless. And his coat. grin

littlemissnormal Thu 27-Dec-12 20:56:25

Buffy is brilliant. I used to work in Bath where Giles lives and got really excited when I saw him a couple of times quietly walking around. shock

InNeedOfBrandyButter Thu 27-Dec-12 20:58:11

I remember watching the 6 o clock ones but I've never watched in order and it was years ago.

AyeOopMoose Thu 27-Dec-12 20:59:29

Oh I loved Buffy.

One of the highlights of my life was meeting Giles in a Bristol sandwich bar and getting his autograph (before the days of camera phones).

Yet the flip side is one of my biggest regrets is not giving DD1 the middle name of Buffy. grin

HumphreyCobbler Thu 27-Dec-12 21:03:24

Buffy is superb. <gavel>

Once More With Feeling is the best television that has ever been made

InNeedOfBrandyButter Thu 27-Dec-12 21:03:28

I live in Bristol, I need to keeps eye out for Giles more!

juneybean Thu 27-Dec-12 21:04:18

I've just rewatched them all, tis a fantastic series! Love Faith and Evil Willow!

FeistyLass Thu 27-Dec-12 21:11:19

Buffy is brilliant! I've spent years trying to persuade dh to get a coat like Spike's . . . to no avail sad

AyeOopMoose Thu 27-Dec-12 21:12:46

Brandy this was about 10-12 years ago god that makes me feel ancient but I think he lived around and about.

He was lush and the message he wrote was " we're all watchers, you know". Deep.

Dfg15 Thu 27-Dec-12 21:32:00

im 55 and I still love Buffy, and Angel. Got both series on DVD, and this thread has made me want to watch them all again! Two of the best TV series ever

alcibiades Thu 27-Dec-12 21:39:46

Spero - I think it was pitched by Joss as a teen show, because he knew how the business worked. He was already known in Hollywood as a "script doctor" by being able to rewrite crappy screenplays into something workable.

And once he'd got the pilot episode re-shot (with Alyson Hannigan as Willow), and the viewing figures came in ("Buffy" was a mid-season replacement), Josh knew that as long as he could manage that difficult balancing act between satisfying the bean-counters and giving the audience what they craved, namely a challenging and satisfying show, then he'd have the freedom to write the show he wanted to write. And his basic premise was exactly as you've said.

nikcname Thu 27-Dec-12 21:45:54

UADNBU!! Buffy is great! I watched it when it was originally on, now have the box set. DS 16 enjoys it too, he remembers it from reruns when he was around 10. The movie is terrible, series is smart, funny and poignant.

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Thu 27-Dec-12 21:47:49

When Joss wrote BtVS the film, it was taken over by the studio and turned into a camp-fest that was far removed from his original vision. However, at that time he was not well known so had no power over what happened with his idea.

When he finally got the idea revamped as a TV show he worked hard to make sure it stayed true to his original concept.

Binkybix Thu 27-Dec-12 21:51:16

If people are Joss Whedon fans, you might also enjoy 'Doll House', which stars the actress who plays Faith (Elisa?) I've never actually watched all of Buffy, but really enjoying Angel and was totally gripped by DH.

KaraStarbuckThrace Thu 27-Dec-12 21:54:18

Buffy totally rocks. Love the way Joss Whedob crafted such well rounded, multifaceted characters. The main cast grow with time and experience, for example Xander starts off as an awkward male hormone bomb and eventually turns into a thoughtful, confident and steadfast man who is full of courage.

Schnarkle Thu 27-Dec-12 22:00:47

Just dug this out tonight again after finding it in the back of my wardrobe. Starting at series 3 as I reckon I've watched series 1 and 2 about a gazillion times each grin

Spero Thu 27-Dec-12 22:03:48

I gave my daughter the middle name Buffy. One friend was horrified. Strangely, we are no longer in touch...

InNeedOfBrandyButter Thu 27-Dec-12 22:04:25

no schnarkle start series one and we'll watch it all the way through together. Get up to episode 4 tonight and tomorrow night we xcan watch another couple of episodes.

CrazyChristmasLady Thu 27-Dec-12 22:05:01

I loved Buffy. However series' 6 and 7 were annoying as hell and it did ruin it for me a bit. Dawn is fucking annoying too. Evil Willow was cool though!

Hex? How can people even mention that in the same breath? It was utter utter dogshite. Didn't really like Angel, although the episode where he danced at Cordelia's apartment was funny. Wesley was looking pretty fit in it as well.

ShellingPeas Thu 27-Dec-12 22:05:14

Love Buffy as a series, fully of humour and intelligence.

And Spike...oh yes, I so would smile

CordeliaChase Thu 27-Dec-12 22:05:59

I LOVE BTVS! I'm rewatching them for about the 12th time, I'm on the last season (not my favourite but still pretty great!). Angel rocks too, he's so hot when he's angelus!!

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 22:09:59

Eliza Dushku. Dollhouse is absolutely fantabulous, until it suffers from the standard Whedon mid-season cancellation and he just vomits on screen to get some kind of story finished.

OhDearNigel Thu 27-Dec-12 22:13:54

Buffy isn't just teen television, it's really well crafted, has some groundbreaking story lines (eg. lesbian relationship seen as totally normal and not a "look we're doing a lesbian scene) and some really scary bits

Episodes like Hush, The Body are incredible tv

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 22:22:20

The Body <weeps>

mrsmalcolmreynolds Thu 27-Dec-12 22:26:22

Also in the great JW cannon is Firefly - cancelled after half a season but truly ecxellent tv. And gave the world Nathan Fillion -mmmmm

mrsmalcolmreynolds Thu 27-Dec-12 22:26:58

Nuts - excellent even

Signet2012 Thu 27-Dec-12 22:29:37

I just got love film. They are all on there. gringringringringringringringringrin. I don't intend on moving. I've being watching them at 11am each morning since been on mat leave on syfy but it doesn't always fit in with my schedule but now.... Oh my days!!

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 22:34:17

I don't actually fancy anyone in Buffy/Angel. Is there something wrong with me??

Although my boyfriend has a proper man crush on Spike grin

Valdeeves Thu 27-Dec-12 22:37:21

This thread made me laugh "in his coat." Ha ha - I feel exactly the same!
When I started my teaching practice the entire sixth form class I taught were obsessed with Buffy and they taped it off Sky to give to me.
I was absolutely addicted and for my 30 my hubby bought me the entire box set. I love it - and I love Spike ( in his coat) - my favourite is the ridiculous musical episode.

VicarInaTutuDrankSantasSherry Thu 27-Dec-12 22:37:49

YANBU! we have the entire box sets! i loved it - all of it. also loved firefly and dollhouse too....the latter 2 were cancelled angry most unjust! they were fab.

buffy was a complete revelation for me! not what i expected at all when i started watching it - i was 35!

TrazzleMISTLEtoes Thu 27-Dec-12 22:41:56

Where is Buffyfairy? She needs this thread!

I love Buffy.

Mmmmmm SPIKE!

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 22:44:34

I like how everyone's completely bypassed Riley in the hotness stakes grin

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Thu 27-Dec-12 22:45:46

Spike, in his coat or out of it, who cares wink

I can't believe that James Marsters is pushing 50 shock He is on my "List" grin

Signet2012 Thu 27-Dec-12 22:48:39

I once showed dp the One with The sex scene in. You know the one, spike, buffy knocking down walls.

I told him that was my favourite sex scene of all time.

He told me he was no spike, sadly I agreed.

We also have a very strong house

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 22:52:21

We watch Without a Trace a lot and when my boyfriend saw 'James Marsters' in the opening credits he nearly fell out of his chair grin And it took us all the way 'til the end of the episode before we realised which character he was. He looks so old different!

Have you heard his band?

kim147 Thu 27-Dec-12 22:55:52

I used to love Buffy in my 20s. Loads of great characters. Used to worry about them though.

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Thu 27-Dec-12 22:57:32

There are many Spike scenes that get me going wink

Favourite quotes:

I may be love's bitch but at least I'm man enough to admit it.

Did your life flash before your eyes? Cup of tea; cup of tea; almost got shagged; cup of tea?

Randy Giles?! Why didn't you just call me Horny Giles or Desperate-for-a-shag Giles?!

Buffy: What are you doing here? In 5 words
Spike: Out. For. A. Walk. [pause] Bitch!

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 23:08:04

Tabula Rasa Love it grin

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 23:09:33

Actually fucking love Giles.

OnTheBottomWithAStringOfTinsel Thu 27-Dec-12 23:13:25

I've borrowed & watched the box set twice in the last 10 yrs (from my little brother who's 41!)

Second time watched it with DD who is 16. Both of us loooove Spike.

Angel is good but not as good - do like the Wesley/Fred storyline though.

Dollhouse is fab, and I have just this minute realised that Netflix has ALL of Firefly on it. I may have to stay in the house for the next 3 days!!!

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Thu 27-Dec-12 23:17:03

grin @ "welcome to the nancy tribe"

I loved that the network bigwigs didn't "get" English swearing, so Joss made liberal use of bollocks, shagging, wanker, etc!

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 23:17:27
StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 23:18:41

Tabula Rasa is one of my all time favourite episodes ever!

LaVitaBellissima Thu 27-Dec-12 23:18:53
StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 23:21:02

Doooo itttttttt!

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 23:21:16

Has anyone read the series 8 comics?

LaVitaBellissima Thu 27-Dec-12 23:24:33

At the moment I am loving Vampire Diaries, teen Wolf, The Secret Circle & Revenge is anyone watching these?

Really keen to do a Buffy revisit although I don't know when I'll find the time... Might do early night Mondays but really stay in bed watching Buffy again grin

Fakebook Thu 27-Dec-12 23:27:30

Yanbu! I loved Buffy whilst growing up. I used to record the night time version and watch it the next day because it was uncut. I still have the videos at the back of my wardrobe.

My favourite episode was the musical one "once more with feeling" I still sometimes find myself singing the songs blush.

StuntGirl Thu 27-Dec-12 23:29:32

I have OMWF on my phone blush Every once in a while midway through my regular playlist something like "They got...the mustard...ooooout!" crops up!

sashh Thu 27-Dec-12 23:33:48

When Angel leaves (you have a few series to go yet) start watching Angel as well.

OhDearNigel Thu 27-Dec-12 23:42:20

i've just been rewatching series 7, it's my least favourite series and goes to a pretty dark and scary place for Buffy. Series 2+3 are my favourites with Doppelgangland probably my fave episode (the meeting of Vamp Willow and Normal Willow with the great line "I'm really skanky and.... I think I'm a bit gay). I only own the series on video and hadnt watched it for about 10 years and was overjoyed to discover that both shows were on Lovefilm. It's the only reason I signed up lol

One of my colleagues is similarly obsessed and our choice of Pointless final question would be "name actors who played minor recurring characters in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

OhDearNigel Thu 27-Dec-12 23:44:16

*Buffy: What are you doing here? In 5 words
Spike: Out. For. A. Walk. [pause] Bitch!*

grin love that line

OhDearNigel Thu 27-Dec-12 23:45:39

Stuntgirl - Something Blue

PromQueenWithin Thu 27-Dec-12 23:46:57

So with you all! Season 3 has just helped me through all my present wrapping. The hours flew by...

PromQueenWithin Thu 27-Dec-12 23:48:35

"Something... Very strange is happening..."
"Can you believe the Watcher's Council let this guy go."

OhDearNigel Thu 27-Dec-12 23:50:03

oh and one I also love for the sheer silliness and amongst other bits the Charlie's Angels style split screen is the season 7 episode Him. And the bit in the Bronze "The one who, according to Dawn, is the quote smartest, funniest, coolest, hottest, and having the thickest boy eyelashes boy in school unquote." Just brilliant

OhDearNigel Thu 27-Dec-12 23:50:42

"Wesley ! She is a teenage girl and you have the emotional maturity of a blueberry scone ! Have at it man"

Fakebook Thu 27-Dec-12 23:53:01

One of my favourite quotes that I still remember:

"Harmony, when you tried to be head cheerleader, you were bad. When you tried to chair the homecoming committee, you were really bad. But when you try to be suck."

ICantFindAFreeNickName Fri 28-Dec-12 00:04:47

We are just rewatching the enire set of Buffy dvd's for about the 4th time. I think Buffy contains some of the best written tv episodes ever. As well as the humour & scary stuff, some of the relationships are really well written. The show has made me laugh & cry (sometimes in the same episode).
I love Angel, Spike & Xander. Oz is the coolest guy in the world. Dawn really got on my nerves though.

We also have Angel, Doll House & Firefly - all brilliant shows.

I can't understand how people can get excited by Twilight, when Buffy is a million times better.

alcibiades Fri 28-Dec-12 00:09:56

But, what about Jonathan? Have we all forgotten Jonathan?

Tallalime Fri 28-Dec-12 00:12:38

Buffy is pure awesome. I love it. And Spike. In his coat.

DD's middle name is Willow because I am that sad she is fabulous, especially vamp Willow... especially dark side Willow

digs out box sets

StuntGirl Fri 28-Dec-12 01:26:24

YY nigel I love that quote! Giles is one of my favourites.

"Let me get this straight. You think I'm evil if I take a group of teenage girls camping...and I don't touch them?"

HibernHoHoHoCaledonian Fri 28-Dec-12 01:44:04

LaVitaBellissima - My lovely. wonderful DH surprised me with that box set for Christmas. Along with The X Files Seasons 1 - 9 with both movies and The Harry Potter Movie Collection.

ChristmasNamechangeBridezilla Fri 28-Dec-12 01:54:44

I looooved Buffy as a teenager. Tuesday nights, 6.45 on BBC2, yes? Is it worth a revisit?

sashh Fri 28-Dec-12 02:50:55

I looooved Buffy as a teenager. Tuesday nights, 6.45 on BBC2, yes? Is it worth a revisit?

I am so old.

You have only seen the heavily edited sanitised version. Get thee a box set now.

Good lines

When Rily comes back and he and Buffy are exchanging war stories

Buffy: Did you die?
Riley: No
Buffy: I'm gonna win.

Spikes little rant when he finds out he can hit other demons, the whole of which I cannot remmebr but ends with ............for Christmas and Puppies, come on'.

And the musical one

I have a theory, it must be bunnies
There not cute like everyone supposes
etc etc

And from episode 1 of Angel

Cordelia 'You're a vampie'
Vampire 'Am not'
Cordelia 'Wre too, I'm from Sunnydale, we have out own hell mouth'

MardyArsedMidlander Fri 28-Dec-12 07:07:31

I think 'Spike. In his coat' would be a great MN pass word grin.

No spoilers- but even at my advanced age, watching 'The Body' was very cathartic and helpful for me, as I went through the same experience at the same age. Only accurate depiction I have ever seen of the strangeness and dislocation.

Tee, how dd buffy lead you to the uk? Tell us now!

Spero Fri 28-Dec-12 09:06:58

I found the season 8 comics quite hard to follow as all the characters look very similar andi cant work out who is who. And the story line is extremely fantastical, which I think is a shame as the best bit of Buffy for me was how it was so grounded in reality - she had to fight deamons and go to school, try to get a job etc.

TwllBach Fri 28-Dec-12 09:19:03

Oh this is just th thread for me grin I used to turn down invitations to stay in and watch Buffy as a teenager. I honestly think without it I wouldn't be the person I am today - I get very invested in thins and the writing was just so amazing.

I have all the box sets and have another nine days off so I might start from the beginning! I definitely think it is a transcendy-generation thing, as I get something new and different from it every time I watch.

fedupofnamechanging Fri 28-Dec-12 09:25:30

'I Will Remember You' is the best Angel/Buffy ever. I cried bucket loads at that one.

Buffy is better than Angel imo, but the last ever episode of angel was an absolute corker.

Am envy at people getting to watch this for the first time - you have all the gorgeousness of Angel and Spike to discover. Enjoy!

RainbowRabbit33 Fri 28-Dec-12 10:06:29

Yeay! A Buffy thread!

I have just informed my husband that "Mumsnet says" we have to start watching them, again, from the very first season. His response was to ask if I started the thread...

That'll teach him to fail to buy Sons of Anarchy Season 4!

(Ooohh... Spike and Jax Teller in one forum post, I never saw that one coming! Can I go all 50 Shades and produce some very filthy fan fic at that point?!)

margarethamilton Fri 28-Dec-12 11:04:25

Never fancied Spike. Angel all the way wink.

DD is called Anya because of Buffy. I loved her:

"I like you. You're funny, and you're nicely shaped" is my favourite Anya and Xander quite.

I've been watching Buffy for years grin there's the paranormal side which was great and if course the hot guy side!!! It has everything smile

ViperInTheManger Fri 28-Dec-12 11:14:38

I loved Buffy. Being the old gimmer of the thread, I was already all growed up and DCs were at school so we watched it at teatime on BBC2 (was it BBC2?) It is ace.

HumphreyCobbler Fri 28-Dec-12 11:21:30

Anya was my favourite character too.

KaraStarbuckThrace Fri 28-Dec-12 12:42:54

I love the scene in Angel when Spike is watching Angel with a woman he'd just rescued and Spike is making up the conversation. That was genius!
And Hush where Giles does the drawings of The Gentleman and Buffy unwittingly does a rude gesture. And the line in series 1 where Giles comments that Buffy would wear cats strapped to her feet is she thought they were fashionable.
The Body made me cry as well!

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 13:01:20

So who wants to give their top 10 eppies ? Gosh, I love a Buffy thread smile My work colleague is on honeymoon so I have nobody to bore with my whedon-chat !!

Here's mine, in no particular order

1. School Hard (s2) - the first appearance of Spike and Dru
2. Band Candy (s3) - for the sight of Ripper nicking the coat for Joyce. Brilliant
3. Superstar (s4) - just really love it. Great to see Danny Strong playing the hero
4. Hush (s4) - Just brilliant. The use of silence is brilliant, the cast really show their actings skills. I don't know why OMWF is always described as the standout episode, for me it's Hush.
5. The Body (s5) - one of the best episodes of any TV series, ever. The way it deals with the aftermath of death is incredibly powerful. Only niggle for me is that the vamp in the mortuary is totally unnecessary. I've seen it loads of times but it still makes me cry with it's stark reality.
6. Crush (s5) Poor Spike - this is the one where he confesses his love for Buffy, tries to stake Harmony and Dru returns on a train What the bleeding hell is wrong with you bloody women? What the hell does it take? Why do you bitches torture me?
7. Hells Bells (s6) Cos I like the big emotional stuff - the one where Xander leaves Anya at the alter.
8. Normal Again (s6) The idea of making the whole of the Buffyverse a fantasy in a mentally ill Buffy's head was brilliant and a neat reflection on the whole "trying to kill your friends" that comes later in the series
9. Him (7) for this interchange in the Bronze:

Xander (about the girl dancing with R.J.): Daddy like!
Buffy: What is that shirt made of — paint?
(Willow's eyes go wide as she realizes...
Willow: Buff—
Buffy: I’m glad Dawnie isn’t here to see her precious boyfriend getting all thrusty with some slut-bag hussy— (The hussy turns around - it's Dawn. Buffy goes slackjawed.) Oh.
Xander: Oh! Oh, no! Daddy no— I wasn’t— when I was looking, I wasn’t… oh, god!
Willow: Right there with ya!

10. Doppelgangland (s3) because I love Vamp Willow smile

An honourable mention should also go to Conversations with Dead People which I find really, really scary.

TwoCatsAndABabyBump Fri 28-Dec-12 13:23:14

I love love love Buffy. My cat is named after Willow. Its THE best television programme ever.

I love Buffy and Spike together (or just Spike on his own). I go on mat leave in March. May have to rewatch my boxset for the millionth time.

I used to work in a vets smile every cat brought in was called Buffy willow or angel grin

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Fri 28-Dec-12 13:28:50

Normal Again was a genius episode, as were Hush and The Body.

Other favourites would be:

The Pack (S1) the first episode I ever saw and even now whenever I see "Principal Flutie" in other shows I have to bring the episode up grin

Becoming Pt 1 & Pt 2 for obvious reasons

Passion (S2) just for ASH's acting during the scene where he discovers Jenny sad

Doppelgangland (S3) purely for Evil Willow

Something Blue (S4), just because its bloody funny

Superstar (S4) - Jonathan grin

Fool for Love (S5) - for the Spike backstory

An honourable mention to The Trio as most inept bad guys ever: "It eats you, starting with your bottom." grin

HumphreyCobbler Fri 28-Dec-12 13:34:36

Conversations with Dead People is brilliant, I agree

I love OMWF due to the brilliant way Whedon brings all the story arcs together so neatly and the fact that the music is SO well crafted. Impressive work.

Tabula Rasa is a fantastic follow up as well.

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 13:42:31

Don't get me wrong, I do love OMWF. It's just not one of my favourites. Although I do love Anya's bunnies, bunnies it must be BUNNIES!!!!!

To be honest apart from a couple of early episodes I don't think there are any bad episodes. I do dislike the potentials in series 7 though. Particularly Kennedy

InNeedOfBrandy Fri 28-Dec-12 13:57:11

I'm really happy there's so many people that love buffy still, I thought this thread would die as soon as I posted.

Sabriel Fri 28-Dec-12 13:58:47

A timely thread. I've just started watching my boxsets again from the beginning.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip we have a Buffy cat grin

Some of my favourite episodes have already been mentioned, but mine are

Something Blue
Once More With Feeling
Band Candy
The Yoko Factor

I like the one where Buffy gets psychic and finds out her mum did Giles grin

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 14:13:52

Oh and another very honourable mention.

Nicholas Brendan in his speedos outfit in the episode where he joins the swim team, I think it's called Go Fish [faints]

twentythirteen Fri 28-Dec-12 14:14:42

Best show ever!

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 14:14:52

wmcd - that episode is called Earshot. Another of my faves (there are so many !!)

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 14:16:48

Oh and the demon Sweet's final song in OMWF. Every time I watch that episode I have that number playing round and round in my head for days :D

I don't know the names grin also love the bit inOMWF whenanya sings about bunnies .

I also like Anne ( know the name of that one grin) and when she gets home everyone's do awful to her when they have no idea what she's been thru

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 14:20:29

life's a show and we all play our pa-a-a-arts but when the music sta-a-a-arts we open up our hearts.....

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 14:21:44

wmcd - I am a complete and total Buffy geek ;D

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 14:25:25

Think I will watch some Angel tonight smile

I sooooo want the box set now <stamps foot emoticon>

envy <---- at all those who have it!

InNeedOfBrandy Fri 28-Dec-12 14:28:00

I can't wait for Dc to go to bed tonight so i can watch another 4 episodes!

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 14:34:14

You don't need the box-set caffeine, you can get a free month's sign up for lovefilm and have a massive marathon

We got 6 months lovefilm on groupon for £9.99. Worth it just for Buffy :D

Unfortunately my dp has already signed up and cancelled love film as didn't have time to watch anythin half the time sad

Besides I still want box set grin currently wading thru 1-6 of house and watching re runs of ER too lol

InNeedOfBrandy Fri 28-Dec-12 14:41:54

That's what I did Nigel! Love groupon sometimes!

OhDearNigel Fri 28-Dec-12 14:47:36

Unfortunately my dp has already signed up and cancelled love film as didn't have time to watch anythin half the time

Sign up for lovefilm instant with a different email. That's all I did, we used to have LF dvds but cancelled it so couldn't get the new deal. I just reregistered with a different email address

EmpressOfThePuddle Fri 28-Dec-12 15:08:29

Brilliant thread!

I'm up to the start of Buffy series 3 on lovefilm. i'd only seen some of the 6.45 ones before that so it's a revelation.

I love the way they build up the characters. And the continuity, and the complete lack of happy ending guarantees...

JakeBullet Fri 28-Dec-12 17:28:10

This thread has got me watching again....on Season 2, going to do an episode a night.grin

GoEasyPudding Fri 28-Dec-12 17:58:52

I have only watched it through the once back in about 2004/5. DH and I borrowed the dvd sets from a friend, then bought s6 and s7.

We also had the huge excitement and the perfect timing of finishing the show and the last ever episode on a Thursday and then on the following Saturday going to one of those conventions and meeting Spike. Honestly - it was like meeting God.

Those of you that were really into this show can probably understand this feeling. He looked 100% the same as he did in the shows and was even wearing a black T Shirt.

There is something Buffy in the air for sure as I was thinking of rewatching it from the start again as I caught a glimpse of a famous episode on Syfy just a few days ago and thought yeah, time for Buffy again.

InNeedOfBrandy Fri 28-Dec-12 18:50:25

Anyone ever watch charmed? I watched every single episode of that but I couldn't repeat them.

coughingbean Fri 28-Dec-12 18:51:38

fecking love buffy! Yes i did swe charmed and agree you can proberly only watch that once!

coughingbean Fri 28-Dec-12 18:52:21

oooo apologiea for the spelling! big thumbs, small phone

Indith Fri 28-Dec-12 18:53:22

I did the month free trial for lovefilm. I made it about half way through Buffy before the month ran out. I keep having to restrain myself from paying for another month or 2 to finish it off!

InNeedOfBrandy Fri 28-Dec-12 19:04:45

Was good while it lasted cb!

Indith you can sign up for another free trial using new email and different bank details.

KaraStarbuckThrace Fri 28-Dec-12 19:05:19

"You made a bear!!!!"

The Zeppo is another good episode.
And the one where Buffy tells the Council to fuck themselves.

Indith Fri 28-Dec-12 19:06:53

I don't have another bank account to use though!

InNeedOfBrandy Fri 28-Dec-12 19:11:58

Your mums?

Try it with your bank account but diff email.

StuntGirl Fri 28-Dec-12 20:02:46

You want me to pick just ten?! Jeeeez ok... (in no particular order)

1. Welcome to the Hellmouth
2. The Body (gives me chills even thinking about it)
3. Tabula Rasa
4. Amends (for the hilltop dialogue alone)
5. Normal Again (probably one of my top 3. Amazing writing)
6. Storyteller (Andrew!)
7. Superstar (Jonathan!!)
8. The Gift
9. The Wish
10. Ted

So hard to narrow it down! I have a particular soft spot for the whimsy of the first few series, but I love how it grows and matures the whole way through.

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Fri 28-Dec-12 20:06:27

For me, actors I recognise in other programmes fall into two categories - appeared in Buffy and appeared in West Wing.

Imagine my confusion when both the Mayor and Principal Flutie appeared in West Wing grin

LaVitaBellissima Fri 28-Dec-12 20:09:57

Yes I loved Charmed too smile

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Fri 28-Dec-12 21:31:00

For all the Spike fans:

Real vampires don't sparkle <fans self>

BsshBossh Fri 28-Dec-12 21:53:26

I too watched Buffy the first time round in my mid-late 20s and into my 30s then bought all the seasons on DVD. I couldn't get enough of the show. I loved Buffy herself (she could kiss ass!) and had a girl crush on her but I fancied Spike something rotten even though he wasn't my (real life) type at all (so I thought!).

I haven't watched it in years so this thread has inspired me to dig out the DVDs again and have a private Buffy fest. Just need DH to go back to work and resume his long days so I can watch at night after DD is in bed.

Very excited!

BsshBossh Fri 28-Dec-12 21:54:11

* kick ass (not kiss ass!)

degutastic Fri 28-Dec-12 21:57:16

wanders in, wonders why ANYONE would think watching Buffy (or Angel) would be inappropriate at any age...

wanders out and digs out DVDs for a re-watch grin

and to perve over Angel, Spike AND Giles

FeistyLass Fri 28-Dec-12 22:20:09

My nephew called me last year from the Edinburgh Festival to say 'Guess who I've met? He used to be in Buffy . . .he has blonde hair . . .'
I was soooo excited because I thought he was going to say James Marsters but alas, no, it was Tom Lenk (Andrew).
Still, I was the only other member of the family that was a Buffy fan and could appreciate why he was excited.

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Fri 28-Dec-12 22:26:10

Had to post this video before I go to bed. Ignore the random subtitles hmm

sashh Sat 29-Dec-12 00:51:39

I like the one where Buffy gets psychic and finds out her mum did Giles

You had sex with Giles?

You had sex with Giles on top of a police car?

StuntGirl Sat 29-Dec-12 00:54:10

Ahahahaha puppet Angel grin

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree Sat 29-Dec-12 00:54:27

Ooh a Buffy thread! YADNBU OP. I luffs Buffy. Fantastic one liners.

We've just got love film. I feel a Buffy fest coming on.

snowtunesgirl Sat 29-Dec-12 00:56:49

OP YABVVVU to not have watched it until now. grin

snowtunesgirl Sat 29-Dec-12 00:58:09

StuntGirl, you didn't pick Hush? shock

StuntGirl Sat 29-Dec-12 01:09:42

I was discussing this earlier with a fellow Buffy geek connoisseur. I really, really like it but I don't think it will ever have a special place in my heart. Plus it has Mr Cardboard himself in it hmm

AND I realised after I posted that I left out Selfless shock So I have decided to have a Top 11 instead!

snowtunesgirl Sat 29-Dec-12 01:10:31

Top 11 is cheating!

ALittleBitOfMagic Sat 29-Dec-12 01:12:38

Original and best teenage vampire phenomenon grin

KaraStarbuckThrace Sat 29-Dec-12 07:37:42

I've met Anthony Stewart Head!
He was luffly smile

TwllBach Sat 29-Dec-12 09:20:56

I've seen the best and the worst of you. I understand with perfect clarity, exactly what you are. You're one hell of a woman.

I adore spike. The way he just held her. The way he just knew her and the way he just accepted, at the end, that she would never love him <sob>

He was a better man than angel - he chose to fight for his soul even when he was a vampire - angelus couldn't give two hoots about it when he was evil, not even for Buffy.

I thought season seven was fine, but mostly for the acting of the Scooby gang. That episode where xander talked to dawn about always being on the sidelines and never being in the limelight - that was beautifully done. I loved anyas speech about humans, too.

I also liked how even the main characters weren't likeable all the time. Buffy was incredibly self righteous a lot of the time, even if she literally did save the world a lot. Dawn was whiny. Giles became needy and cowardly when he realised he wasn't the only adult anymore. All the characters had flaws, and I think that just made it all the more real.

Gah, I want to stay in and watch Buffy <stamps foot>

Binkybix Sat 29-Dec-12 09:41:00

Right...Buffy it is when I've finished Angel!

There was something about spike!!! Angel was hot but spike had that edge I think. That one where Buffy was invisible and spike was caught with his pants down was hilarious too.

soontobeburns Mon 31-Dec-12 00:22:27

So do I buy it? £35 on amazon for all 8 seasons and got a £50 gift voucher for xmas.

I love supernatural, hex (yes it is good), tru calling, vampire diaries, the secret circle etc. So will I like it?

soontobeburns Mon 31-Dec-12 00:32:36

Sorry 7 seasons.

snowtunesgirl Mon 31-Dec-12 00:33:10

Oh God, absolutely! You know without Buffy, there would have been no Eliza Dushku in Tru Calling.

BananaBubbles Mon 31-Dec-12 00:33:55

£35 on Amazon? Where? I can't see it.sad

soontobeburns Mon 31-Dec-12 00:48:28

True snow thanks. I do love a bit of tru calling (if fox hadnt canceled it grr)

Banana im on the app and its the 2nd one down in used and new 34.55 from amazon like new.

soontobeburns Mon 31-Dec-12 00:54:48

Okay well I got it. Sorry but mainly because I was afraid banana or someone would snap it up at the price lol.

Thanks guys. Will let you know how I get on smile

BananaBubbles Mon 31-Dec-12 01:01:47

I ordered one too.Thankyou for that.

soontobeburns Mon 31-Dec-12 01:11:55

Glad to hear it banana cant beat it at that price grin

StuntGirl Mon 31-Dec-12 01:47:35

If you think thats cheating I nearly put "Series 1 - 3" as just one of my options grin

EmpressOfThePuddle Mon 31-Dec-12 03:49:41

I've just finished watching Earshot. I AM going to bed now.

If I was a straight teenager I think I'd want to date Oz.

InNeedOfBrandy Mon 31-Dec-12 06:46:32

I have finished season 1! Aw got all emotional at the end with buffy going off to her death, when she was saying to Giles im Only 16 I don't want to die I quit. <tears>

skaen Mon 31-Dec-12 09:01:31

I love BtVS. I'm really looking forward to starting DD on it. DH and I rewatched it earlier this year for about the 10th time.
Favourite episodes:
Becoming 1&2
Conversations with dead people - terrifying
the whole of series 3...

last few episodes of season 7 when Spike is being all amazing

the Body
Once More with Feeling

Fantastic show. I'm not as into Angel but love Firefly. Serenity is the film based on the Firefly series pretty much funded by fans and is brilliant.

Joss Whedon has now been given some big stuff though - he wrote, scripted and directed Avengers Assemble (again there is some fun in spotting british swear words which passed by the censors) so he should be building up some serious clout for new series of Buffy/Dollhouse type stuff.

fairylightsandtinsel Mon 31-Dec-12 09:05:15

its fab, but you may find you get more out the later series' when there is less high school angst! (though spike comes in series 2 so its all good from there!) Top episodes are Becoming pts1&2 (end of season 2), Hush (s 4) an the musical one (s 6) - though that divides opinion grin

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Mon 31-Dec-12 10:06:23

Angel has also been reduced to £49 on Amazon - and Doctor Who's first 4 seasons (Eccleston to Tennant) to just £32.

BadPoet Mon 31-Dec-12 10:27:05

Top 10 episodes? I will have to give that one some thought!

I downloaded and read all of season 8 on Boxing day, tbh am not sure. Some of the plot is just ridiculous, there's too much bringing back of old characters and I didn't like some developments. But it is still some excellent storytelling and can't change how I feel about s1-7 grin

Hex is crap, sorry. And 8 is too young.

JakeBullet Mon 31-Dec-12 10:42:14

Once More With Feeling
Hush (scary as hell)
Lots of Season 7 where Spike is just amazing.
Any episode which features Harmony as she is just hilarious.

1charlie1 Mon 31-Dec-12 10:47:43

Love it! So does DH, and we're both the wrong side of 35. Between us, we actually had 3 complete box sets: his, mine, and mine at mum and dad's in my home country. We have since downsized to one...
On our second date, we were talking about our favourite shows. I just had a feeling he was going to 'confess' to Buffy fandom. And he did. Kind of sealed the whole thing for me! Such a special show.

OhDearNigel Mon 31-Dec-12 14:40:44

he should be building up some serious clout for new series of Buffy

How I wish with my whole entire heart that there would be another series. But I believe SMG doesn't want to - which is the only real reason they haven't already done a film/new series sad

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr Mon 31-Dec-12 15:33:34
StuntGirl Mon 31-Dec-12 19:34:45

I would actually be ok with no more series - I think it had its moment and anything more would ruin it. Americans often drag their series on for far too long, some times less is more. Series 8 doesn't even exist in my mind - I got as far as the faux-lesbian thing and gave the hell up.

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 20:06:42

I would also prefer no more series - I never read any of the comics, strictly a TV only girl. Obv I've seen the Kirsty Swanson film a couple of times, I would like to see a really good film (ie. not like the SATC which did not represent the series). The original writes are plenty up to the challenge having done several 2 parters. Only issue would be making the film a standalone project so that new viewers could understand it without 11 series to get to grips with the backstory !

A BtVS film would ideally involve one/more of these ideas:
1) Exploring the ideas raised in Normal Again/The Wish of an alternate reality
2) A different spin on "what happened next". Maybe focussing on Willow more, I think by series 6 she was by far the most interesting Scooby (well, apart from Anya but she's dead now)
3) No Kennedy.
4) Buffy never lived in Sunnydale, Joyce moved to Cleveland smile
5) No Kennedy

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 01-Jan-13 20:17:52

Casting would be difficult though. If they could get the originals back, the Scoobies grown up, that would be great. Alternatives.... really not so sure.

One of the things I notice about the actors, especially Sarah Michelle Gellar and Antony Head, is just how expressive they can be without saying anything. Like when Buffy's back from the city and Giles is alone in his kitchen, his body language is very understated but you know that inside he's leaping up and down and cheering.

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 20:23:39

I think it's always SMG that's the sticking point. Most of the other cast members do lots of fan events and have been quite upfront that they are willing to be involved in any new projects. Not sure about AH and SG either, they have gone on to forge quite sucessful post-BTVS careers.

AboutThyme Tue 01-Jan-13 20:53:28

Are all the series on lovefilm instant? Will sign up for it if they are <hopeful>

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 20:58:01

JakeBullet Tue 01-Jan-13 20:58:51

All seven seasons are on LoveFilm. smile
I am watching an episode a night at the moment. Brilliant series.

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 21:06:43

which one did you watch tonight Jake ? I watched Touched and First Date (both s7 but not consecutive) last night, going to watch Same Time, Same Place in a minute even though I find it horrible

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 01-Jan-13 21:10:50

I heard SMG wasn't keen.

I'd love a Willow spin-off, though. Or Giles.

JakeBullet Tue 01-Jan-13 21:12:17

I'm on Season Two and watched the one where Ethan Rayne is introduced for the first time.

I only saw season seven for the first time in September and was bereft when it ended grin .

Loving Spike and Drusilla again.

AboutThyme Tue 01-Jan-13 21:39:39

I've read this thread from start to finish and am very excited now! Had forgotten how much I love Buffy and also forgotten how bloody annoying and whiny and bratty Dawn is!

BertieBotts Tue 01-Jan-13 21:41:05

I did this, was so excited and then I was really underwhelmed by it sad

InNeedOfBrandy Tue 01-Jan-13 21:42:04

I'm on season 2 now! Am watching the mummy one at this moment! Watched the first one with spike first appearing a while ago <drool>

BananaBubbles Tue 01-Jan-13 21:44:52

I can't wait for my boxset to arrive, but I've just remembered that it means that I'll have to suffer through who knows how many episodes featuring bloody Riley. I cannot stand him.

AboutThyme Tue 01-Jan-13 21:51:17

Ugh Riley. Hated him. Him, Dawn and Kennedy can all be bitten!

OhDearNigel Wed 02-Jan-13 00:54:47

i quite liked Riley. He was a bit solja boy but he was completely in love with Buffy even though he knew it wasn't mutual Yeah, I'm well aware of how lucky I am. Like, lottery lucky. Buffy's like nobody else in the world. When I'm with her, it's like - it's like I'm split in two - half of me is just on fire, goin' crazy if I'm not touching her. The other half is so still and peaceful, just perfectly content. Just knows, this is the one. But she doesn't love me sad

I also quite liked the whole vamp "prostitute" storyline with him. The bit in Hush where they both meet across their weapons is great. I also love the bit in Restless where he and George Hertzberg (aka Human Adam) are building a fort with pillows. One of the funniest buff moments for me.

OhDearNigel Wed 02-Jan-13 00:58:47

Ugh Kennedy. I loathe that character. In fact I hate most of the Potentials. For example, the "English" girls in the early potentials episodes, the accents aaaaargh. They already had two perfect and unnoticable English accents on the show (one native in ASH and one acted superbly by James Marsters) so those two girls grate on me hideously.

And Kennedy ???? As far as I am concerned she was the most obvious plot device in the whole of Buffy. Ghastly and gratuitous.

juneybean Wed 02-Jan-13 01:01:42

Willow deserved someone nice, not some child like Kennedy!

OhDearNigel Wed 02-Jan-13 01:07:08

oh and the episode where Riley goes off in the helicopter before Buffy realises what's at stake but can't get to him in time to stop him going ? really sad . And top lines for Nicholas Brendan of course when he makes her realise what's at stake. And after when he explains to Anya how he loves her "powerfully, painfully in love" makes me cry every single time I see this episode.

Had to google for that episode title blush into the woods

EmpressOfThePuddle Wed 02-Jan-13 01:22:39

The bit that's got to me most so far (I'm halfway through Season 3 so I know there's a lot to come) is Angelus laying the trail for Giles to discover Jenny. It's utterly heartbreaking & utterly brilliant.
And then they go & put Giles finding the rose in the opening credits.

kittensarecute Wed 02-Jan-13 01:54:09

Firstly, this is my first time posting on here, so hello!
I'm 27 and I love Buffy, rewatch episodes quite often and am currently rewatching the whole series. It is just awesome.

JakeBullet Wed 02-Jan-13 07:20:33

Hello kitten and welcome smile.

I am loving this thread, so good to know I am not the only Buffy devotee out there.

Incidentally I suspect that Russell T Davis is a HUGE fan as some of the Dr Who story-lines have aspects of them that make me think of Buffy immediately....and of course he got James Marsters to appear in Torchwood.

Riley never bothered me but when Season 5 came along it did seem as if his sole function was to get his top off every episode. Not that I am complaining mind grin.

Loved the Ben and Glory storyline and cried buckets at the end of it.

Agree that Dawn was a bit whiny but it seemed to improve over time plus I thought that MT (not attempting to spell her name) was a good actress.

InNeedOfBrandy Wed 02-Jan-13 07:27:01

Hi kitten grin

I'm still really surprised how many people still love it, I shouldn't be because it's a great written and acted series. Agree with whoever said up thread about the amazing body language in the acting to.

InNeedOfBrandy Wed 02-Jan-13 19:20:28

Dc are tucked into bed, tea chocolate biscuits and episode 5 season 2 is about to come on. <bliss>

Schnarkle Thu 03-Jan-13 14:54:19

Watching season 3 still here and I've just watched an episode I've never seen before shock The zeppo, was a good episode too grin

TwllBach Thu 03-Jan-13 14:56:30

I've just stopped ironing, paused the DVD and run here to tell you all that I have just cried through Buffy's speech in Prophecy Girl, when she over hears Giles and Angel talking about her dying.

She is brilliant in it, "Will it hurt?" <sob>

EmpressOfThePuddle Thu 03-Jan-13 14:57:11

Yes, Zeppo seemed lightweight at first but then I thought how much Zander develops in it. And doesn't feel the need to boast about stopping the bomb.

TwllBach Thu 03-Jan-13 15:13:08

Xander is one of the best characters of the series I think. There is nothing 'special' about him, he has no 'powers' and yet he is always there. He is like an anchor.

nillynoon Thu 03-Jan-13 17:19:54

We are on series 5 and it's bringing back all my teen angst and emotions!

StuntGirl Thu 03-Jan-13 19:13:02

Glory is AMAZING. She's such a great character, the female counterpart to early Spike with his wanton destruction, they both utterly revel in the mayhem.

Riley was such an insipid abomination, definitely the weakest character written. I didn't think I could dislike a character more, and then Kennedy popped up grin I am so gutted Whedon couldn't get Amber Benson back, and I think he did the best with what he could but she's such a horrid character. In fact I hate all The Potentials. I just want to scream at them to do as Buffy says!

Other characters always accepted Buffy's leadership more readily than The Potentials, even when they knew nothing about her or her powers. I always wondered if, being 'potential' slayers meant they felt more equal to Buffy and so less likely to do as they were told. Bloody annoying little brats!

JakeBullet Thu 03-Jan-13 19:25:52

I never liked the whole "Potentials" storyline tbh....well it was okay but the Potentials were dreadful....the faux English accents. They should have had lessons from James Marsters or Juliet
Landau.....both did fabulous English accents.

I haven't seen an episode yet today but I am on Season 2 and I think Juliet Landau is fantastic as Drusilla.

StuntGirl Thu 03-Jan-13 19:28:54

You lot think James Marsters English accent was good?! shock

Now Wesley Wyndam-Price, Rogue Demon Hunter...he could do an English accent grin

Binkybix Thu 03-Jan-13 19:31:01

Is the actor who plays Wesley Wyndam-Price, Rogue Demon Hunter not English in real life?! His accent is good!

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Thu 03-Jan-13 19:46:22

Alexis Denisof is definitely American, born in Maryland. He's married to Alyson Hannigan (Willow) in real life. They are such a cute couple grin

I found Druisilla a bit "Dick van Dyke-cockney" at times. James Marsters said he used to go through his lines with Antony Head and ask him to help with pronunciation. IIRC he only had one noticeable slip up when he pronounced "patronise" in the American way ("pay-tronise" instead of "pat-ronise")

JakeBullet Thu 03-Jan-13 19:49:36

I thought James Marsters did a fair job tbh...a few mispronunciations but on the whole it was good. Juliet Landau's accent was good...yes a bit cockney but I always assumed that this was just the Drusilla character being a bit nuts.

AH apparently sounds much more like Spike in RL...much less "oh golly gosh".

StuntGirl Thu 03-Jan-13 19:49:57

Nope he's a Yank. Brilliant accent.

TwllBach Thu 03-Jan-13 20:02:24

YY I remember bring genuinely scared of Glory. That scene when she's on the bench with Tara was so upsetting.

TwllBach Thu 03-Jan-13 21:48:56

I am in the awkward position of wanting to do both Giles and Xander.

Mostly Xander. Xander is like my ideal husband - by the end of the series, obviously.

As I recall, Giles gets a bit <hesitates> pathetic somewhere in the middle of the series.

TwllBach Thu 03-Jan-13 22:15:09

Ohhh and spike and drusilla have just rocked up. They're lovely together <swoons>

InNeedOfBrandy Thu 03-Jan-13 22:17:26

Oh twll I'm about 3 episodes in front of you!

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Thu 03-Jan-13 22:18:30

I just wanted to do Spike grin You know he'd have you hanging from the chandeliers wink

TwllBach Thu 03-Jan-13 22:28:07

I plan on starting early tomorrow - hopefully ill be on season three by the end of the day I'm considering cancelling a lunch date

TwllBach Thu 03-Jan-13 22:30:10

Even when spike was bad he did things to my insides.

Cordelia is actually very pretty.

InNeedOfBrandy Thu 03-Jan-13 22:30:35

I have to wait for dc to be in bed before I can watch any sad

I'm watching the Halloween one with spike ATM <drool€

EmpressOfThePuddle Thu 03-Jan-13 22:31:58

There's a lot more to Cordy than I remember. She actually grows and develops too, & it clearly hurts a hell of a lot when she catches Xander with Willow.

JakeBullet Thu 03-Jan-13 23:54:48

I was devastated when Cordelia left....didn't think the series would be the same without her. Of course it was fine but remember really missing her.

StuntGirl Fri 04-Jan-13 00:21:05

I loved Cordy too, she was another brilliant example of character development. Shame they totally ruined it in Angel sad

Series 2 is awesome brandy, I hope you're enjoying it grin

Earthymama Fri 04-Jan-13 00:26:09

I watched Buffy with my son when he was a teen.
DP And I watched with our neice when she was a teenager. Now we are watching with 15year old DGS1 when we have the GC overnight. We watch 2 episode and DGS loves it!!
We talk about all sorts of things afterwards. We are only on S3 so lots of lovely Spike and Witch Willow to come.
We have 4 more DG, the 9 and 7 yr olds are already planning to watch when they are 14, it is a Rite of Passage in our family. grin
You can do a MA in Buffy Studies in US I think?
Can you imagine, it would be wonderful to really study in depth.
Buffy is the best TV ever.
I am so jealous of all pf you who are watching the wonders of Buffy for the first time.

TwllBach Fri 04-Jan-13 07:44:20

That must be amazing for joss whedon, don't you think? To
Know that you have created something worthy of studying.

<considers trying to do one online>

JakeBullet Fri 04-Jan-13 08:06:22

Oh's so worthy of study on many levels...women's issues, philosophy and even religion.

I watched the episode where Kendra turns up .....and we are beginning to see Oz for the first few times <Seth Green......drooooool......I so would> grin.

Spike and Drusilla are hopelessly in love...quite touching if they were not crazed vampires.

Actually some of the best stuff has Spike in it....I will never forget the episode where he is trying to stake himself in Xanders basement because he has to wear one of Xanders shirts.grin

TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat Fri 04-Jan-13 14:13:11

I actually went to an academic Buffy conference at Norwich University. And I once used a transcription of Spike and Glory to teach speech acts with particular reference to insults!

Discovered Buffy at Season 5/6 (Beeb and Sky) - so picked it up in an interesting order. Instead of 'who the fuck is Dawn and where has she come from' I had 'where is Dawn then?' when I saw the early ones.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 05-Jan-13 13:24:06

I watched Choices last night. I think having the benefit of at least some hindsight helps, even though I'm coming from only having seen some of the 6.45 episodes.
On the one hand I love the way Willow's going, on the other I know where it's taking her...

InNeedOfBrandy Sat 05-Jan-13 13:33:24

I watched the one where the demon Giles and his friend had summoned came to get them. First time it properly scared me blush I actually jumped and (I think it's dawn, the it teacher yes?) really really scared me such good acting. I slept with the hallway light on.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 05-Jan-13 14:05:09

Oh yes.
I was thinking I'd like to see a spinoff about Giles as Ripper, they were talking about one a while ago. Then I thought I'd like to see more about Jenny (IT teacher, Dawn comes later) and her background. And I'd love Willow to have her own series....
Ha. In other words, those characters are so well drawn that I want to know more about all of them.

JakeBullet Sat 05-Jan-13 14:06:00

Watched the two parter in Season 2 where Kendra turns up. Hideously bad accent by the actress but having read up about this it seems as though the accent was a last minute thing she ws told to do worth no opportunity to practice it. She's on record as saying it's appalling and she hated it.

kim147 Sat 05-Jan-13 14:08:57

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it but do you remember "Buffy the Musical" episode smile

And always think of Buffy when I hear Anthony Head as an actor (as well as Gold Blend (shows age) )

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 05-Jan-13 14:22:31

The musical was amazing. I'm not letting myself jump forward though.
just saw a Buffy annual in a £1 shop, I had a quick look and there were badly drawn picture stories of them charging off on various adventures. Weird.

JakeBullet Sat 05-Jan-13 14:49:45

Once More With Feeling.....amazing episode. grin

StuntGirl Sat 05-Jan-13 14:54:03

Empress - the series actually continues in comic form.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 05-Jan-13 15:00:03

I know, and I'm going to explore that when I've watched all the TV episodes.

This wasn't that, though. the story I looked at had Willow, Tara and Dawn going off to the beach.

TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat Sat 05-Jan-13 15:18:35

Fancied AH in Gold Blend ad (he is a couple of years younger than me), then didn't at first realise it was him as Giles. (Giles' record collection was similar to mine, so Spike would have approved of it)

OMWF - about the most perfect hour of TV ever made.

JakeBullet Sat 05-Jan-13 15:23:00

Bunnies bunnies it must be bunnies.....or maybe midgets.grin grin

TwllBach Sat 05-Jan-13 19:49:29

They got
The mustard

Sometimes I find myself singing the songs to myself I my car grin

I' just got to the end of the episode where Giles and Ethan summon the thingy of aygon (sp?) only to discover that I'm missin the next two disks! I've missed the episodes where angel and Buffy get it on and then he runs bad <sob>

But I am now watching Passion.

I remember watching it for the first time when it was aired on BBC2. My parents had gone to the supermarket and I was on my own. It was dark outside and I watched the last half hour or so standing in the middle of the living room because I was far too tense to sit down grin

Jenny is just about to start running round the school <sob>

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 05-Jan-13 20:10:16

Oh God, that's the one that really stays with me so far....

When Angelus lays the trail for Giles & he's going up the stairs, looking so happy. I was digging my nails into my hands so hard I had marks.

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Sat 05-Jan-13 20:27:22

I think I remember Joss Whedon saying that he killed Jenny off specifically to show that no one was safe.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 05-Jan-13 20:39:38

Yep, that worked. And then they have the picture of Giles finding the rose in the series 3 intro.
All that is partly why the Buffy annual seemed so weird. On no level is Passion for kids!

TwllBach Sat 05-Jan-13 20:39:58

It was never one of those shows that left the characters unharmed. Everybody suffered and key people died - that's part of what makes it brilliant. A bit like ER grin

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 05-Jan-13 20:58:52

And you get to know the characters so well that you suffer with them!

JakeBullet Sat 05-Jan-13 21:04:57

I cried buckets when Tara died....especially after the happy "Once More With Feeling" episode where she sings about her love for Willow.

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Sat 05-Jan-13 21:14:44

I've just seen Amber Benson (Tara) in an episode of Supernatural playing a vampire called Lenore grin

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 05-Jan-13 22:35:33

Me too sad

Having watched it from the start now and got to really like Oz, though, I'm already feeling sorry for him in the knowledge that he's going to lose Willow for a second time. I didn't like the sudden Xander/Willow pairing, I know they're paving the way for Cordelia leaving but I feel really sorry for her especially.

kittensarecute Sat 05-Jan-13 23:49:26

Am currently rewatching season 6 for the first time in ages. So awesome!

EmpressOfThePuddle Sun 06-Jan-13 01:47:26

just watched The Prom.
'I'm going to give you all a nice, fun, normal evening if I have to kill every person on the face of the earth to do it.'

Tryharder Sun 06-Jan-13 01:59:19

Ok. I have Lovefilm and want to watch Buffy. But I dislike violence in films/tv. For reference, I have seen the Vampire Diaries series and although I enjoyed them, I found them a bit too gory. Is Buffy less gory or on a par? Sorry to be a bit of a wuss but grateful if someone can advise before I start watching!

TwllBach Sun 06-Jan-13 08:31:30

Most kf the violence is a bit power rangers IYSWIM? Bearing in mind that most if the time she's killing vampires, so it's largely a stake in the heart followed by a cloud of dust. That's not to say that there isn't a fair few bits of blood and the odd neck breaking here and there!

Remember, though, that it was aired before the watershed so I would say you would be ok. I've not seen the vampire diaries though... I've watched an episode of true blood and would say it was much less violent than that if that helps?

<realises whole post is useless>
<presses send anyway>

EmpressOfThePuddle Sun 06-Jan-13 09:30:52

The pre-watershed episodes were censored. The full episodes usually had a 15 rating and were shown later.

It's not that graphic - not in series 1-3 anyway, can't remember how graphic it gets after that. But they don't need to be graphic because they can get all the violence and pain across simply through atmosphere and the look on someone's face.

TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat Sun 06-Jan-13 09:31:35

In fact the Pink Power Ranger was Buffy stunt double, I believe.

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Sun 06-Jan-13 09:37:52

I'm a total wuss too when it comes to gore and violence, but am an avid Buffy fan. It has a few moments here and there, and some episodes are a bit scary on first watch (Puppet Show creeped me out on first viewing!) but overall it is very tame compared to modern shows of a similar type.

I bought DH the Supernatural box set for Christmas and we're currently working our way through it. I'd say it is much more gory/violent than Buffy, even though they're both rated 15.

EmpressOfThePuddle Thu 10-Jan-13 19:01:42

Well, I was a bit doubtful about season 4 at first. But I've just watched Hush.

Enough said really.

Questions though....

Why didn't the Initiative turn up on Graduation Day? All I can think of is that they're either brand new (which doesn't seem right) or their intelligence was too crap for them to know it was happening (which doesn't really seem right either, surely they'd have picked up on there being something odd about Mayor Wilkins).

And also wrt Graduation Day, I loved Jonathan's speech about Buffy as Class Protector but when they all know what Sunnydale's mortality rate is like...

juneybean Thu 10-Jan-13 19:35:25

interesting thought, how did they build the initiative so quickly

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Thu 10-Jan-13 19:41:55

I'm just rewatching The Freshman. I'd forgotten how great the soundtrack to the show is grin!

Favourite quote so far: "Are we gonna fight or is this gonna be a monster sarcasm rally?"

EmpressOfThePuddle Thu 10-Jan-13 21:53:35

grin I'm trying to decide now whether I can be bothered to start watching Angel in tandem.

I'm starting to think it might be worth it. Things like casual references to Spike as William the Bloody which I odn't remember having been discussed previously on Buffy so is it something she found out from Angel? And Buffy mentioning having seen him in LA.

MarmaladeSkies Thu 10-Jan-13 21:57:10

I collected my Buffy Boxset yesterday. I watched Hush last night.I can't decide if I should start from S1 E1 and work my way through,or watch all my favourite episodes first. There's no Spike in S1 after all.

TwllBach Thu 10-Jan-13 22:30:51

Empress I'm rewatching season two, which is when spike is first introduced to Buffy and I'm pretty certain I remember Giles reading about spike from a book "William the bloody" AKA spike, for his predilection for torturig people to death with railroad spikes.

sashh Fri 11-Jan-13 06:30:11

Enough is enough.

We need to picket Joss Wheden for a new series.

How about Willow has found a new love, they use magic to create a baby that is genetically 50/50 theirs, no sperm donors or anything like that. That has to be potential for something spooky happening.

Xander will also have a new partner and a child/children.

Cue a whole new generation.

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Fri 11-Jan-13 06:32:16

Yup, TwllBach is right, he is referred to as William the Bloody in S2's School Hard, for his penchant for driving railroad spikes through his victims. It's not until much later that we find out about his "bloody awful poetry" wink

Hark! The lark,
It spake..... etc

EmpressOfThePuddle Fri 11-Jan-13 07:42:31

Ah grin

Thanks, forgot about that.

I haven't read all the the thread but I'm 29 and have every single video box-set....I still watch them series ever.

I remember watching the last episode when it aired on BBC2 (I watched it from the beginning and never missed one)....I bawled like a baby

Oh God....I'm only on page 6 and already I've decided I NEED to re-watch them all's been a couple of years since I have.

Hush....awesome...The Body...stunning (the way they have no incidental music or score just makes it so eerie and stark) songs ever.....

GAAAAAARGH <<digs out VCR>>

When I discovered the dog had pissed on one of my box sets that was on the bottom shelf he very nearly went out the window....I didn't talk to him for 3 days.

Sorry for 3 posts in a row...

I tried to find a link but it looks like Fox has put it's foot down....

Giles singing "Behind Blue Eyes"

I so would....

AlphaBeta2012 Fri 11-Jan-13 09:43:29

Love Buffy but have to say don't be disappointed if after the first few series you begin to feel it is going downhill a bit....

Though my favourite episode ever was the musical one as it was just so random!!!

EmpressOfThePuddle Mon 14-Jan-13 17:34:28

Only one episode to go of series 4 and yes, it's hit and miss. The Mayor was an infinitely better villain than Adam. But it had it's good points, including Hush, New Moon Rising and the Faith episodes, and I'm looking forward to staarting series 5.

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 15-Jan-13 17:15:15

Passion had me on the edge of my seat, but then I knew what was coming.

With Reckless, I had no idea, and it was bloody scary. Willow fumbling her way through the red curtains backstage took me straight back to Twin Peaks - did anyone watch that?

TwllBach Sat 26-Jan-13 15:30:14

I'm watching the Glory season on SyFy today. It's just about to show Tara being drained by Glory and I'm all ready to cry grin

This is the season where I start to dislike Giles iirc, because it just seems like he's an almighty non help. I'm sure it's because they aren't teenagers anymore, but still.

And spike is just fabulous.

TwllBach Sat 26-Jan-13 18:45:34

Season six now.

God I love this programme. I would kiss Joss Whedons feet if I saw him on the street.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sat 26-Jan-13 18:58:40

Not far behind you!
Just watched Into the Woods.
I agree, Spike is one great character. Then again I love the way Zander's growing up. And even that Giles is becoming less obviously mature and whatnot in comparison to the Scoobies, no longer feeling that he has to be the grownup.
Joyce though... I know she's been told she's fine (for now) but when she was getting all the bad news you'd see her stricken, just for a second, and then she'd put the smile back on for her girls. I'd love to see some of her posts on MN.

TwllBach Sat 26-Jan-13 19:04:17

It's so difficult to pick who you think is the best isn't it!

I think Xander is my out and out favourite. He's never been anything but himself, good, steadfast and loyal, even when faced with horrible things.
I do love spike but Xander tops it.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sun 27-Jan-13 10:26:00

Poor Spike... He's wooing Buffy right now and just can't do right for doing wrong.
Got as far as Joyce's death last night sad

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Sun 27-Jan-13 10:27:33

Poor Joyce sad

EmpressOfThePuddle Sun 27-Jan-13 10:48:20

I guess having just received the flowers, though, at least she died happy. And she didn't have to experience Buffy's death.

LoveYouForeverMyBaby Sun 27-Jan-13 10:52:45

The body was a great episode and the whole spike/buffy love affair surpassed what she had with angel imo. When he dies at the end and says he loves buffy and she says it back and he says "no you dont" - gets me everytime (sobs)

TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat Sun 27-Jan-13 12:34:20

And the sex with Spike was better than with Angel too. wink

LoveYouForeverMyBaby Sun 27-Jan-13 13:14:04

Angel was drippy, spike had charisma.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sun 27-Jan-13 13:23:40

And I have all this yet to come :-D
Looking forward to Dark Willow. Though not to Tara's death :-(

JakeBullet Sun 27-Jan-13 13:28:08

Watched "Once More With Feeling" this morning. ...loved it..
"bunnies, bunnies it must be bunnies. .....or maybe midgets"grin

That demon bloke was an amazing dancer too.

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Sun 27-Jan-13 13:29:58

All demons should wear Zoot Suits and spats grin

JakeBullet Sun 27-Jan-13 13:35:04

Yeah.....very fanciable move over Dawn grin .

EmpressOfThePuddle Fri 01-Feb-13 20:14:55

Just watched Intervention. Shows just how much Spike's changed...

And I LOVED the Buffybot's line 'It's Spike! And he's wearing his coat!'

TwllBach Tue 12-Feb-13 13:22:08

I'm watching the episode where Giles is back after they brought Buffy back.

The argument between Giles and willow is fabulous. "You rank, arrogant amateur" followed by the tiniest glimpse of willow being powerful.

God I love this programme.

TwllBach Tue 12-Feb-13 13:23:13

"You want me to take them out? It'd give me a hell of a headache but I reckon I could thin the crowd a little." LOVE Spike grin

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 12-Feb-13 13:40:44

grin I've just started series 7.
Poor Spike.

The Once More With Feeling soundtrack is my current favourite housework music.

TwllBach Tue 12-Feb-13 13:42:35

They got
The mustard

TwllBach Tue 12-Feb-13 15:06:06

What can't we face if we're together?
What's in this place that we can't weather?

Do you know, I get embarrassingly emotional when I watch Buffy grin

Willows dress is beautiful in once more with feeling.

saxony Tue 12-Feb-13 16:15:57

Love Buffy.
Currently reatching them on Syfy. I skyplus them and catch up in the day no I am on maternity leave.
Love Hush and Bargaining part 2 where Buffy reveals that she as actually in heaven.....her speech to Spike at the end has never left me...completely threw me the first time I watched it in my 20s

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 12-Feb-13 17:08:06

You know, it just occurred to me.

Why does no-one comment on Buffy's resurrection? If Willow and Tara were looking after Dawn for nearly 5 months and thought it was permanent, wouldn't they hhave needed to make it official? Where did Social Services think Buffy had been?
Or was it a side effect of Willow's spell that nobody noticed?

TwllBach Tue 12-Feb-13 17:16:28

Didn't they have the Buffy bot for exactly that reason, Empress? They sent her to the open day at school with dawn, etc.

NC78 Tue 12-Feb-13 17:25:42

I'm 35 and I still enjoy it.

NynaevesSister Tue 12-Feb-13 17:32:33

I am 45 and still love it! Joss Whedon is my fave writer ever.

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 12-Feb-13 17:34:57

Of COURSE. idiot me. Thanks TwllBach grin

TheSilveryPussycat Tue 12-Feb-13 17:35:51

empress I wondered similar, despite the Buffybot there was a grave with a headstone? I cope with this kind of thing by deliberately dismissing it as a glitch and by looking at Spike

ZenNudist Tue 12-Feb-13 17:36:49

It's worth a rewatch. I think I last rewatched it on mat leave whilst bf-ing.

When Angel leaves for his spin off start watching that too. That way you get to enjoy the occasional back and forth of characters.

ZenNudist Tue 12-Feb-13 17:42:18

Once more with feeling is my favourite episode of any TV show ever. More shows should do musical episodes.

Willow is fantastic as the big bad. I still enjoy alyson Hannigan in how I met your mother.

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 12-Feb-13 18:18:22

Before this I'd only seen the occasional early evening episode. watching it through from the start is amazing. I love the way that even in the final seasons they still refer to stuff from the first series.

TheSilveryPussycat Tue 12-Feb-13 18:21:23

Some of the best lines were cut from the early evening episodes. Spike's line about candles!

TwllBach Tue 12-Feb-13 18:22:26

Oh I hadn't thought about the head stone <disappointed>

TheSilveryPussycat Tue 12-Feb-13 18:27:36

Try my Spike solution grin

TwllBach Tue 12-Feb-13 18:35:19

Buffy and spike have just brought the house down grin

"I might be dirt, but you're the one that likes to roll in it, Slayer"

<thinks about jumping DP>

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 12-Feb-13 18:35:46

I have this huge compulsion right now to break into Under YourSpell at full volume.

But I'm in sainsburys.

TwllBach Tue 12-Feb-13 18:36:43

Spread beneath my willow treeeeee <snurk>

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Tue 12-Feb-13 18:42:06

I take it you all heard that Robin Sachs (Ethan Rayne) died last week sad

EmpressOfThePuddle Tue 12-Feb-13 18:52:32

I hadn't sad . He was a good villain. So to speak.

I managed not to start singing in Sainsburys but I couldn't help it in Waitrose. People politely ignored me.

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Tue 12-Feb-13 18:55:21

I forgot the link. He was only 61 sad

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 10:31:37

Buffy is wearing red lipstick. It looks really nice - I wish I had the right complexion for red lipstick.

I also like her new grown up hair. It was sad that she had to cut it off to make herself feel better and push spike away, but it is pretty.

YANBU, not at all [big dizzy virtual hug] The wit, the whimsy, the shirtless-ness, the tortured looks and Olaf the troll on the rampage "Hide your babies and your bead-work!" .... "Hit him with fruits and various meats!" "[swipes at skip bin w large troll hammer] Puny receptacle!"

Luckless Xander “What do you think? Another demon was attracted to me. I'm going gay. I've decided I'm turning gay. Willow, gay me up. Come on, let's gay. Let's get this gay show on the gay road”

LauraSmurf Wed 13-Feb-13 18:08:53

Tee! Buffs is the reason I first went in a date with my husband! It even featured as part of our wedding. Buffs is legendary!

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 18:15:41

I have recently decided that, should I ever get married, I will have quotes from Buffy featured somewhere I don't care where. Especially the one where spike and Buffy have that convo in season 7, where she's left the house and is wearing a white t shirt and black trousers. Spike goes to find her and she is in some mans house. Eventually, they fall asleep together.

I will go find it...

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 18:18:45

I'm not asking you for anything. When I say I love you, it's not because I want you, or because I can't have you, and it has nothing to do with me. I love what you are. What you do. How you try. I've seen your kindness and your strength. I've seen the best and the worst of you, and I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You are a hell of a woman. You're the one.

It's just beautiful <sniff>

And then when they talked about it later he says

"All I did was hold you. Watch you sleep. It was the best night of my life."

MrsBW Wed 13-Feb-13 18:20:00

Twll this one?

Spike:"You listen to me. I've been alive a bit longer than you, and dead a lot longer than that. I've seen things you couldn't imagine, and done things I'd prefer you didn't. I don't exactly have a reputation for being a thinker; I follow my blood, which doesn't always rush in the direction of my brain. So I've made a lot of mistakes. A lot of wrong bloody calls. A hundred plus years, only one thing I've ever been sure of. You. Look at me. I'm not asking you for anything. When I tell you that I love you, it's not because I want you, or 'cause I can't have you, it has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try... I've seen your strength, and your kindness, I've seen the best and the worst of you and I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You are a hell of a woman. You're the one, Buffy."
Buffy: "I don't... I don't want to be the one."
Spike: " I don't want to be this good-looking and athletic. We all have crosses to bear." --Spike & Buffy(BtVS, season 7). Episode: Touched

MrsBW Wed 13-Feb-13 18:20:44

I was wondering about the dead references haha!

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 18:24:23

I would love to put the whole thing, but I think my nan etc would find it a bit harder to take grin so I took it out.

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 18:26:25

You listen to me. I've been alive a bit longer than you, and dead a lot longer than that. I've seen things you couldn't imagine, and done things I'd prefer you didn't

I love that bit though. So much of the script is poetic.

I also wondered about having Xander and anyas number as my first dance grin

MrsBW Wed 13-Feb-13 18:31:29

Favourite bit is season 3 when Angel comes back but they have to keep their hands off each other.

I love the music when they're doing the katas(?) in the crypt or whatever it is.

David Boreanez... Swoon.

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 18:37:45

When I watched it the first time I was literally in love with angel. Every single other time I have watched, it's been all about spike. I get that angel was her first love, but spike was the right one for her. Angel was far too self obsessed - he was basically a male Buffy and she needed someone like spike, in my humble opinion grin

The bit in passion, where angel is the voice over, is lovely though. "Passion speaks to us. It drives us" etc etc.

MrsBW Wed 13-Feb-13 18:42:58

I'm gonna get my box sets out again!! Too many good episodes. The Prom, Amends... Oh, and I Will Remember You from Angel season 1... You seen that??

MrsBW Wed 13-Feb-13 18:43:35

I'm a Bangel fan rather than Spuffy, as you might tell!! smile

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 18:46:49

I never got in to Angel as a spin off I'm afraid!

I've been making my way through the box sets since Christmas. I forgot all about season five with glory - she was an ace Big Bad grin

MrsBW Wed 13-Feb-13 19:58:25

Just see if you can watch episode 8 I think it is if you haven't seen it.. Buffy is in it and it's SUCH a weepy!! Spike is a regular in season 5 smile

EmpressOfThePuddle Wed 13-Feb-13 20:09:55

Passion? I barely drew breath in that episode. The part where Giles was following the trail and getting so excited...

MrsBW Wed 13-Feb-13 20:11:37

Right... Hubby is away 1 night and I will have time to watch 2 episodes (I have season 1-7)

Which ones??????? confused

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 20:28:31

The one where buddy's mum dies, definitely

Ohhhh soma my possibilities!!

EmpressOfThePuddle Wed 13-Feb-13 21:11:47

Once More With Feeling!

TwllBach Wed 13-Feb-13 21:20:17

fizzykola Wed 13-Feb-13 22:37:50

Wow it sounds brilliant! Never seen it but I loved the Joss Whedon series 'Firefly'.
Do you watch it with DPs? If not how do you get peace to watch all those episodes???

EmpressOfThePuddle Thu 14-Feb-13 13:23:05

I watch when everyone's either out or asleep, Fizzykola.

Watched Same Time, Same Place last night.
My God...
I think the Willow-Gnarl scene is the single most gruesome thing I've seen on Buffy so far. I end up holding my stomach every time I think about it.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sun 17-Feb-13 13:24:19

And the Potentials are here.

Could someone not have got the 'British' ones an accent coach???

It feels too soon for Willow to be falling for Kennedy.

I love Buffy to absolute death, but something about the plot always irritated me.

Buffy dies....Kendra is "called"
Kendra dies..."Faith is "called"

Buffy dies new slayer. The fact there already is one (Faith) can't be the reason as Buffy was alive when Faith was called....

TwllBach Sun 17-Feb-13 13:41:29

This was mentioned on another thread I read recently Scarlett

Basically, there is only one Slayer line. So when Buffy dies, the line is continued through Kendra.

Kendra dies and the line is continued through Faith. When Buffy dies again, it doesn't matter, because the line is continued through Faith, IYSWIM?

Ahh right that ever explained? I can't believe I've missed it if it is. I now that she was supposed to stay dead and that's how the whole "The First" thing happened. I've watched it from start to finish multiple times (AT LEAST 10, probably more) and didn't know that explanation <<blushes>>

TwllBach Sun 17-Feb-13 14:23:08

I don't recall it being explained - although I can well imagine Giles explaining it grin

It does sort of make sense though, because previous to Buffy, the Slayer never had any friends and therefore no one would have been around to care enough to revive her... apart from her Watcher perhaps. Or the Slayer that Spike killed that had the son. <ties self in knots>

I can completely see the point you make just always confused me, and usually Joss Whedon's plots are pretty tight. It does kinda make sense. Buffy is the ultimate Slayer nearly undoes the world as well, but saves it in the end.

TwllBach Sun 17-Feb-13 14:37:55

TBH I hadn't even thought about it until someone else pointed it out blush

Do you remember the episode where she had that fight with the boy/vamp that majored in psychology? He had a whale of a time psycho analysing her and told her that she had a superiority complex and then that she had an inferioty complex about the superiority complex??

That summed the whole series up, for me. Joss Whedon was never afraid of highlighting the complexities of human nature and being completely honest with the characters havign flaws etc - not like so many other shows where the leads are practically perfect in every way.

That's what made it so plausible for me, because even if you stripped away the paranormal, it would still make a pretty decent story!

Agreed....I'm a massive Whedon fan. Everything I've seen of his (Firefly, Dollhouse etc) has been fantastic. Dollhouse was amazing....I wish it had been allowed a few more seasons to tell the story properly. All his characters are flawed. But then all PEOPLE are flawed....even the really good ones. Buffy is an incredibly complex person....and I love her all the more for it.

TwllBach Sun 17-Feb-13 14:44:18

He even makes the 'unimportant' people important - Xander.

To me, Xander is one of the most amazing characters ever written. Surrounded by people who are technically 'special' and he still manages to hold his own and be a valuable member of the group.

I heart Xander

Xander is great....and I love his relationship with Anya. The only character who annoyed me a bit is Dawn....but she's supposed to be annoying.....oh and maybe Riley, but I can understand the point of his as well in terms of Buffy's character growth.

I do mostly love the original Scooby Gang. The first 3 seasons are by far the best. The finale of season 3 is my favourite bit. The fact it's all about the leaving of high school etc (I was leaving high school at about that time) just made it all the more powerful. They're going out into the world etc....<<whistful>>

Ahh I still haven't got around to starting to watch it again yet, but I have it ready. We're just catching up on Dexter. I watched a few episodes form season 6 on SyFy yesterday. We don't normally have that channel in our package but it seems to be available to us for some reason at the moment.

TwllBach Sun 17-Feb-13 14:55:01

We must be about the same age Scarlet because I was watching it around them too grin I get quite nostalgic when watching it because I had all these plans and ideas and morals...

I agree about season three - but I recently watched season five and had forgotten how powerful it was towards the end. Season six and season seven are so emotionally draining, I find.

ExDP used to watch Dexter but I am wary of getting sucked in to watching any more seasons - I get far too involved!

I'm nearly 30, so they left school a bit before I did, but It was still very relevant to me.

Dexter is great. We get very into series of stuff and watch lots together (DH loves Buffy too, one of the first things we talked about).

Together we've watched the whole of - Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, Buffy, Angel, Dexter, Grimm, Walking Dead, Fringe, Alphas...I'm sure there's more...we're closet geeks blush

Ooooh you should watch Death Valley if you like that kinda thing. There's only one season so far but it's funny as fuck grin

TwllBach Sun 17-Feb-13 15:06:27

I'm watching the Walking Dead at the moment - I love Glenn and Maggie grin

I think I will investigate a couple of those - it's only five weeks till half term after all!

BSG is fantastic if you love Sci-Fi, Fringe is also amazing. They've also got GREAT kick-ass female lead characters. I've yet to watch the last couple of the last season but I have them on the Tivo box.

Oh of course we've seen Dollhouse and Firelfy as well, but I mentioned those earlier.

We're watching the new episode of TWD tonight, I've waited SO LONG!

Love everything about them. Death Valley has zombies, vamps, everything. It's about a special unit of the police that has to deal with a "supernatural threat" after it just appears in modern day America. It's VERY funny and action packed, shot like a documentary (like Traffic Cops or something).

TwllBach Sun 17-Feb-13 15:54:28

Is Dollhouse the one that had Eliza Dushku in it? If so, I saw an epsiode of it once and was desperate to see the rest, but then forgot...

I like Firefly, I'm sure I watched the first season on boxset.

You will love the next episode of TWD grin I watched it and couldn't believe when it ended - I was certain I had only been watching for twenty minutes!

I am a massive zombie/Buffy style vampire fan. By Buffy style, I mean anything but Twilight although I love those films so Death Valley definitely sounds up my street.

You are a bad influence grin

Tryharder Sun 17-Feb-13 16:12:01

I started watching back to back Buffy episodes on Lovefilm as a direct result of seeing this thread. Finished Season 3 last night. Am absolutely loving it. Have a schoolgirl crush on Angel even though I am 42. Cried buckets last night when Angel and Buffy stared longingly at each other and then he turned and disappeared into the smoke/mist <sob>

TwllBach Sun 17-Feb-13 16:29:00

I'm a little bit jealous Tryharder that you are getting to witness them all for the first time!

I must leave this thread alone

Tryharder Sun 17-Feb-13 16:40:49

HaHa Twllbach, when I've finished Buffy, am going to watch Angel so have got hours and hours to watch yet. My DH is pissed off because I sit and watch Buffy every evening that I am not at work.

I'm with you on Twilight Twllbach - load of sparkly lame bollox if you ask me grin

Yes Dollhouse has Eliza Dushku in it....there are two seasons, it's awesome.

EmpressOfThePuddle Sun 17-Feb-13 20:23:47

DD is a huge Twilight fan - v v offended when I pointed out that Edward wouldn't last two minutes against Spike grin .

thaliablogs Sun 17-Feb-13 20:52:02

IMO it is essential to watch the 'right' seasons of angel with the appropriate buffy episodes. On original broadcast they were back to back and particularly in angel season one some of the events only make sense in tandem ( eg buffy getting a phone call "hello, hello? " but no one is there, angel episode he is calling her....)

Joss Whedon is a genius and buffy one of finest tv programmes ever. Thanks for this thread, I am truly among my people!
