"I don't know how to do links"

Am I the only person whose MN has an explanation under the posting box? That is pretty hard to miss, even if you are a first time poster?grin

valiumredhead Mon 10-Dec-12 18:46:01

Maybe they don't know how to copy and paste?

miamibeach Mon 10-Dec-12 18:48:27

Nice.

I clicked the convert box but it didn't seem to work when I posted.

What a lovely welcome to MN.

BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies Mon 10-Dec-12 18:48:39

I mean the posts feature the address, but not the hyperlink

Sparklingbrook Mon 10-Dec-12 18:49:03

I think it is fear about making a balls-up when you are new. There should be somewhere to practice. grin

Greythorne Mon 10-Dec-12 18:49:56

Tricky on a phone.

XBenedict Mon 10-Dec-12 18:50:32

There is - you can preview it and check your link is working. I like helping people who can't do links, makes me feel needed grin

BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies Mon 10-Dec-12 18:52:04

In that case miami, you can't possibly be one of the posters I mean, as if you clicked the convert box, you'd have no reason to apologise? confused
Apologies though, I don't mean to be bitchy, I was just... perplexed smile
Welcome to MN!

ChippingInAWinterWonderland Mon 10-Dec-12 18:54:11

Miamibeach - don't worry, some people are grumpy. The rest of us are pretty nice - but not sparkly ticker nice grin

I'm sure it wasn't aimed at you - a lot of people who have posted here for years still can't do them!!

It is easier to type two of these [ then copy and post your link then type 2 more of these ]. If you want to say something like HERE then just leave 2 spaces after your copy and pasted bit and type what you want, then put the two ]'s.

Confused much ??

ChippingInAWinterWonderland Mon 10-Dec-12 18:55:49

Sorry XBen - didn't mean to spoil your fun, you should probably help anyway, I've probably just confused her more!

See Miami - even grumpy people can be nice grin

hackmum Mon 10-Dec-12 19:07:15

I have a problem, which is that none of the emoticons work for me - it doesn't matter whether I type them in manually or copy and paste from the list, they just don't convert. It may be to do with the browser I'm using, I dunno.

BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies Mon 10-Dec-12 19:08:07

Try one now, we'll let you know if they show up for us?

pouffepants Mon 10-Dec-12 21:14:43

It might be hard to miss.....but I missed it. Never noticed that bit before, and didn't have a clue how to do links.

There's loads of text on a computer screen, I think I just skim past anything that isn't immediately necessary. Computers freak me out.

Renatica Mon 10-Dec-12 21:15:50

I can't do those nice neat one word links, they just defeat me!

BadRoly Mon 10-Dec-12 21:16:14

It isn't there if you are posting from a phone - I have just looked now doing this...

Not only am I unable to do links, I can't even get the bloody smileys to work.

Smiley face smile
Grin grin
Wink wink
Shocked shock
Sceptical hmm
Confused confused
Embarrassed blush
Angry angry
Sad face sad
Envious envy
No comment biscuit

Emphasis

Oooh bugger!

Lueji Tue 11-Dec-12 00:02:07

I assume you don't know how to copy and paste then....
grin

It's not that complicated.
wink

I'm not bothered about web addresses without links. Because I can copy and paste. shock

MyNutcrackerSuiteAudrina Tue 11-Dec-12 00:20:48

YANBU because you have reminded me of this poor woman

Icelollycraving Tue 11-Dec-12 00:23:05

I have never learnt & I don't care,yabvvu!! grin

CaHoHoHootz Tue 11-Dec-12 00:36:44

My strike throughs always failed.

TheElfOnThePanopticon Tue 11-Dec-12 07:20:51

I can't post links on my phone - there is no box to check (or info about how to post links) and my keyboard doesn't have aware brackets. Easy on a pc, but I have no idea how to post its from a phone.

It took me ages to post links, as I lurked for years use the app, which doesn't have helpful hints of how to post links. There was a thread long ago called "plurkers" where people could try to use MN posting features without being mocked for any failures. I learned a lot there.

zombiesheep Tue 11-Dec-12 07:46:14

And when MNers strike through every single word - you only have to put the two "-" at the front of the sentence and after the sentence. You don't have to individually put two "-" before and after every single word.
Not like this
But like this

weevilswobble Tue 11-Dec-12 08:06:07

Is it really that important that some poor bugger (like me) cant do some fancy computer stuff?
Isnt it more important that what they write is of some use to someone, wise, thoughtful, kind and contributes to humanity in a positive way?

I dont know how to boldify, link or such. Maybe because i MN in bed on my iphone.

Sorry.

Quick masterclass:
bold is a * each end of a word or phrase
italics is a ^ each end
strike through is two - each end
underline is two _ each end
All hard learned and with much mocking when I got it (inevitably) wrong.

TraineeBabyCatcher Tue 11-Dec-12 08:52:11

Well you learn something new every day! I'm the mobile site and the message box is much scrolling above the smileys and info on the links. And as I am lazy and have never seen the need I've never scrolled past the emphasis part.

CaHoHoHootz Tue 11-Dec-12 13:11:26

InMySpareTime

Not that it matters grin but underline only has one _ at the beginning and one _ at the end? Strike through has two -- at either end though. It's not very consistent hmm

It worked with two, didn't occur to me to try it with one.

What's up with bold ?
Is it bold now?
All things I had in bold have reverted.

weevilswobble Thu 13-Dec-12 13:48:02

Oooooo I gonna try it! weevils

weevilswobble Thu 13-Dec-12 13:48:29

weevilswobble Thu 13-Dec-12 13:49:10
