A couple of my friends are surprised that I haven't tried it. Why the hell would I want to?

GobblersSparklyExplodingKnob Sun 25-Nov-12 21:32:15

Don't then.

It's tasty though wink

SaggyOldClothCatPuss Sun 25-Nov-12 21:35:03

You drink cow's milk. What's the big issue?

Arithmeticulous Sun 25-Nov-12 21:36:39

I tried once, on a business trip when I was pissed very thirsty but yet tied to the bed double expressing. There was a full bottle next to me... nah - too sticky and sweet.

WitchOfEndor Sun 25-Nov-12 21:37:43

It is just milk, it's not like cannibalism!

NumericalMum Sun 25-Nov-12 21:37:47

I never tried mine... Dh did though. I don't like milk from cows either unless disguised with coffee, tea or sugar!

It tastes sweet, only cos a little bit splashed on my arm and I had to see what all the fuss was about

Didn't with my next child though. Been there, done that wink

Most of my friends have found it gross that I have tried

stargirl1701 Sun 25-Nov-12 21:38:51

Just like sweet cows milk IMO.

Curiosity got the better of me so I did. Couldn't have glugged down a glass of it (quite apart from the fact I was rubbish at expressing) because my poor old head couldn't quite get straight with the idea. Bit like being able to suck a pricked finger with a drop of blood but unable to quaff a glass of that either.

Mind you, the taste was fine. Sweet.

PlateSpinningAtAllTimes Sun 25-Nov-12 21:39:27

YANBU. DH tried mine and didn't enjoy it. I've never had any desire to try it. I wouldn't try formula either! In fact, I'm not keen on cow's milk...

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus Sun 25-Nov-12 21:39:58

I tried mines, no wonder babies love it. It tastes like liquid sugar! confused

PlateSpinningAtAllTimes Sun 25-Nov-12 21:40:23

x post with numerical

missymoomoomee Sun 25-Nov-12 21:40:36

I tried it because my baby was drinking it and I was curious. How does that even come up in conversation though? confused

olddogs Sun 25-Nov-12 21:40:43

its like marmite... you either want to and cant see anything wrong with or .... or dont and think its awful

CMOTDibbler Sun 25-Nov-12 21:41:14

I always thought it tasted like evaporated milk - I had no objection to drinking it, but its too sweet in coffee

emsyj Sun 25-Nov-12 21:41:22

YANBU. The idea of warm milk (rather than icy fridge-cold milk) makes me feel a bit queasy. Although if I could be arsed to express, refrigerate and then try it, I might be more willing to try my own milk I suppose.

5madthings Sun 25-Nov-12 21:41:41

i couldnt bring myself to drink it but i did use it in cooking, mashed potato etc, it was fine like that smile

ShhBoom Sun 25-Nov-12 21:42:21

YANBU, I've tried formula but that's as far as I'd go!

MikeOxard Sun 25-Nov-12 21:42:24

Yanbu, to save you the trouble, it tastes like cows milk, but a bit sweeter. Formula tastes like those fish oil tablets, not milky at all, I can't remember which brand that was though.

I didn't produce a lot but didn't try mine. I'm not a fan of milk on its own so didn't fancy it. A part of me wishes I'd tried it but I couldn't bring myself to do it at the time.

Lueji Sun 25-Nov-12 21:43:29

I hate cow's milk, but breast milk was fine.
Different taste.

I once drank an expressed cup when travelling for work. Just thought what a waste it was to discard it.

ItsNovemberFFS Sun 25-Nov-12 21:44:16

Ok, I get the fact that our babies drink it and it's food, but at the end of the day it's a fluid that comes out of your body. Have you tried all your bodily fluids?! Yes yes, it's milk, it's food, but it just seems...weird.

timeforachangebaby Sun 25-Nov-12 21:44:34

Its sweet and a lot nicer than formula.

StuntNun Sun 25-Nov-12 21:44:44

I've never had the urge either although my mum assures me I couldn't get enough of the stuff when I was a baby. Neither of my older children have expressed an interest either (geddit?), even when they see their baby brother bfing.

Meglet Sun 25-Nov-12 21:44:58

Mine was like sugar water. Sticky too.

MissVerinder Sun 25-Nov-12 21:45:12

I tried mine, but YANBU if you don't want to try yours.

DH had a few mouthfuls as well. Bit unexpected though grin poor thing.

bondigidum Sun 25-Nov-12 21:45:39

I don't drink cows milk now, only soya but even that I can't glug down a glass of. Just never been a big milk fan, can only have it if its in a cuppa or on cereal.

I tried bm and it was just incredibly sickly sweet. Much like all other milk, I could never drink a full big glass. Formula is rancid, it doesn't even taste of milk.. its just gross and it stinks as well.

EndoplasmicReticulum Sun 25-Nov-12 21:46:30

I didn't, for the same reason as ItsNovember. Plus I don't really like milk. And it would be warm.

squeakytoy Sun 25-Nov-12 21:48:21

A genuine question here. Does formula taste as sweet?

It would make me think that for all the mothers on here who are forever ranting about how their babies and toddlers are never given sugar or anything sweet so as not to let them develop a liking for sugar, they have already got that liking from the breast milk.

I have never had a sweet tooth, dont like anything very sweet and never have, even as a kid I preferred eating a tomato to eating really sugary things, and I was 100% formula fed from day 1.

EricNorthmanIsMyMaker Sun 25-Nov-12 21:49:48

I haven't. And don't really fancy it. But like some of you I don't like milk unless its in tea & only have soya on cereal.

EasilyBored Sun 25-Nov-12 21:49:50

I can't stand warm milk. I tried a drop, just out of curiosity, and it's fine, just sweet. But I couldn't have drunk a big swig of it unless it had been in the fridge.

oddslippers Sun 25-Nov-12 21:50:51

I remember it tasting exactly like the milk from a bowl of crunchy nut cornflakes. Yanbu for not wanting to try though I was just curious smile

MissVerinder Sun 25-Nov-12 21:51:02

IMHO squeaky, it's gross, but quite sweet, not as sweet as breast milk though, I think.

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus Sun 25-Nov-12 21:54:11

Squeaky Formula tastes rank. It doesn't taste anything like BM.

squeakytoy Sun 25-Nov-12 21:55:40

Leading on from that question then, does the amount of sugar that the mother eats, affect the level of sugar in the milk?

My son has a very sweet tooth & was FF from a few weeks old.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte Sun 25-Nov-12 21:57:27

I've never tried mine. I once had the urge to squirt some in a childless friend's coffee, though, when I'd been awake for about 48 hours straight with newborn DD and she had the audacity to complain about how tired she was.

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus Sun 25-Nov-12 21:57:30

I don't eat much sugar and mines tastes just like liquid sugar.

I also don't have much of a sweet tooth, never have and was %100 FF.

NeedabreaknotabloodyKitKat Sun 25-Nov-12 22:03:11

Im really surprised how few people tried it by accident. Express, heat, test temperature on arm, lick to catch drip... Must've dine that a hundred times!
I often though the no sugar rules are a but daft too, it's supersweet. Interestingly I've just moved dd onto 1-2yr formula (I know it's a con but Im not having mych luck getting her to take cows milk yet) and that smells much much sweeter than her previous formula.

Never try lacto free formula though, that is truly truly vile!

NeedabreaknotabloodyKitKat Sun 25-Nov-12 22:04:45

Christ I have got to start previewing messages typed on my phone, sorry if you can be bothered to decode that lot!

SirBoobAlot Sun 25-Nov-12 22:12:02

I tried mine, had expressed and dropped a little bit on my finger by mistake, so licked it off. Its very sweet. Given the choice, I'd rather drink breast milk than cows milk, simply because of the milking process!

If you don't want to try it, then don't.

I do think its interesting how people get about adults trying breast milk though. We drink the milk of another creature without even a seconds thought, and yet breast milk brings out a whole range of reactions!

stargirl1701 Sun 25-Nov-12 22:18:13

Formula is gross. Really fishy.

Badgersnatch Sun 25-Nov-12 22:21:27

I don't drink milk (fussy). Tried my own and thought it tasted of tinned peaches. Never tried formula because it has fish oil in and I'm a veggie.

sammysaidso Sun 25-Nov-12 22:22:10

I've breastfeed for 3months now and I can honesty say the thought to try it has never crossed my mind.
I did stick some on one of my partners spots once and it cleared it up really well!

OTTMummA Sun 25-Nov-12 22:41:17

I had some colostrum on a spoon in late pregnancy, I had a horrible chest infection, I also used it to clean DS eyes from conjunctivitis as I didn't want that spreading just before DD arrived, works a treat. My colostrum was very yellow and sticky, but had loads.

NumericalMum Sun 25-Nov-12 22:56:07

My dd had dairy free formula when she was older and that turned my stomach when I made the bottles. Just stank. No way I could have tasted it either.

Rachog Sun 25-Nov-12 22:57:41

I have licked the odd dribble from my arm very sweet.

BuddyTheChristmasElf Sun 25-Nov-12 22:59:31

Weird not to IMO
I don't mean downing a glass or pouring it on your pancakes, I mean licking spills off your hand when you have over-supply or temp testing when you express etc
It's more faff NOT to

BuddyTheChristmasElf Sun 25-Nov-12 23:00:34

"Formula is gross. Really fishy" Aptimal is, cause it has fish in it! others aren't

Cortana Sun 25-Nov-12 23:06:05

I tried mine. Super sweet, during pregnancy and while BF after DS was born I was on a very healthy low sugar diet to keep my BM as good as it could be <pfb-alert>. No idea what causes such a sweet taste. Formula tasted horrible.

Also found it good for spots, conjunctivitis and nappy rash.

trixymalixy Sun 25-Nov-12 23:11:48

I tried dairy free formula numericalmum. I ended up bfing DS until he was 2 as he wouldn't take it and after trying it I didn't want him to have it either!!! Vile, vile stuff.

I tried a drop of my breast milk, very sweet as others have said.

NervousAt20 Mon 26-Nov-12 00:03:15

I've not tried mine and won't

babyboomersrock Mon 26-Nov-12 00:14:56

I don't see how you can avoid tasting it - even a tiny drop licked off your finger. It's sweet and tastes nothing like formula; in fact, I tasted formula recently and it was just not very...milky. Weird.

I breast-fed all four of my children and none of them has a particularly sweet tooth in adulthood, but it's something I used to wonder about. Obviously nature recognises that a nice sweet food is attractive to a newborn.

I don't like it, formulas awful too

djelibeybi Mon 26-Nov-12 00:32:41

If you are curious enough to want to taste it; feel free.

If you don't want to try it; don't.

It is your choice. Nobody should make you feel bad about it.

On a slightly related note: there is no excuse for the dinner ladies that forced me to eat boiled cabbage. I hope they all died long, slow, miserable deaths, preferably from painful, embarrassing and humiliating diseases.

Isn't cow's milk pus? That's pretty disgusting really. At least you know what's gone into your own milk by looking at what you've been eating.

Morloth Mon 26-Nov-12 07:01:18

My breastmilk was lovely. Tasted like rockmelon. I also accidently tasted a friends (was babysitting, making up a bottle, spilled some and licked my arm before I realised what I was doing), hers was much creamier tasting than mine but still fine.

Formula however tasted like shit, yuck.

I can't do milk anymore. It grosses me out to think I am drinking the milk of another species. For some bizarre reason though yoghurt, cheese, butter and even cream are fine. But milk makes me want to chuck. Doesn't make any sense at all.

I don't think it is a rule that you have to try it though.

MummyPig24 Mon 26-Nov-12 08:22:50

I don't like cows milk and don't drink that so I don't have any desire to drink my own breastmilk either. I licked a droplet off my hand but that was enough!
Haven't tried formula, mainly because it smells vile. A friend of mine used to test the temperature of her babies bottles by having a swig through the teat. Boak.

TheCountessOlenska Mon 26-Nov-12 08:38:52

I hate to say it, because I am a big fan of breastfeeding/ breastmilk, but the idea of trying mine made me feel squeamish. I never had much luck expressing, maybe if I'd expressed a nice glass of it and put it in the fridge . .. but not a dribble direct from my nipple!

DD loved it though which was the main thing. I expect mine tasted of cake and red wine as that was all that got my through the first two years blush

^ haha cake and red wine grin

It's probably different for different people, the taste I mean. Apparently you either have a gene or you don't which affects the way cucumber tastes to you- either it's bitter or not.
I love cucumber, all my dad's side of the family do! not bitter for me

SamuelWestsMistress Mon 26-Nov-12 12:11:00

I neveranaged to taste it but I used to love the smell in my breast pads!

SamuelWestsMistress Mon 26-Nov-12 12:11:14

Never managed
