porkchopsandwiches Fri 23-Nov-12 21:44:12

DH wants to put the tree up now. His says loads of people have there trees up and, we've just had 8 bad months with DH being ill and out of work. We need cheering up.

I love our christmas tree too, but i could wait another week.

aibu not to?

I'm itching to do it tbh.
Got it all out and it's in a messy pile, would look neater up...

KenLeeeeeee Fri 23-Nov-12 21:48:11

Do it!!!

Mine is already half assembled and waiting to be decorated tomorrow

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 21:50:48

YABU

There are laws against putting up Christmas trees in November.

grin

Doshusallie Fri 23-Nov-12 21:50:53

Yabu. At least wait until December.

TysonsMummy Fri 23-Nov-12 21:55:07

the more cristmas the nicer hun

mum2threesons Fri 23-Nov-12 21:57:09

Do it! My tree is in my conservatory just waiting to be put together and jazzed up!

Katisha Fri 23-Nov-12 21:57:18

Won't you be sick of it by actual Christmas?

CHristmas isnt the whole of December plus New Year surely?

LaCiccolina Fri 23-Nov-12 21:57:27

Nope. I am. I'm 8mth preg in dec. I'd rather do now than then.

Bah humbug to anyone arguing with me ha ha!

lovelyladuree Fri 23-Nov-12 21:59:49

oh yes please do it. We walked home from school today shouting 'chav' at each house we saw with their decorations up. There weren't enough, though, but still excellent fun.

porkchopsandwiches Fri 23-Nov-12 22:09:08

You might be right there lovelyladuree. DH is a bit of a chav.

He saw a tree with some LD light 2 weeks ago and like them.

kay1975 Fri 23-Nov-12 22:14:46

Mines up! House has fully and I mean fully decorated all week!!

Do it and turn the christmas music up as well!

shesariver Fri 23-Nov-12 22:17:58

I dont get all the scrooge people who shout loudly "its too early"!!!!!!!....says who...them? The shops are full of Christmas stuff, are decorated for Christmas and Christmas type stuff has started, e.g the ice rink in George Square opens tomorrow, the lights there are on, all which I associate with Christmas! Why wait until December - I feel like bringing my decs down after Boxing Day so the longer before Christmas the better!

CheshireDing Fri 23-Nov-12 22:19:23

Nooooooo YABU Christmas stuff should only come out in December, unless you are a shop.

No dh wanted too and I've said no till devember

Katisha Fri 23-Nov-12 22:21:53

Of course the shops are full of Christmas stuff. Doesn't make it Christmas. 12 days of Christmas start 25th Dec.

toomuch2young Fri 23-Nov-12 22:22:39

I caved in to the pressure. Tree is now up. Decs to follow tomorrow.
Do it!

freddiefrog Fri 23-Nov-12 22:23:45

DH put tree up the first week of December last year. I was thoroughly sick of the bloody thing come Christmas.

At least wait until December

LDNmummy Fri 23-Nov-12 22:24:05

I'm waiting till two weeks before the big day as I think it will build the suspense, but I don't think doing it now is that bad either.

ClippedPhoenix Fri 23-Nov-12 22:25:58

Why not just leave it up all year round then grin

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 22:27:24

The shops are full of Christmas stuff to selll stuff in preparation for Christmas, not because it's Christmas.

Shesariver I presume you're talking about the decorations in George Square in Glasgow. I think they're a bit disappointing again. I remember (when I were a lass!) they used to be so much nicer, and all up Buchanan Street, Sauchiehall Street and along Argyle Street. Buchanan Street's got those poncy bloody cone Christmas trees up yet again too!

Oh well.

marriedinwhite Fri 23-Nov-12 22:31:38

The needles will all have falled by Christmas Day.

The weekend before (possibly a few days earlier) and down on 6th January.

If you have it up longer than that the balls will need dusting shock.

Compromise and put a few outside lights on a tree or something. I went to a party last night and there were lights in the Bay Trees along the path up to the house.

onedev Fri 23-Nov-12 22:34:47

Tree goes up the Sunday after Thanksgiving, so ours is going up on Sunday - yippee grin

greencheddar Fri 23-Nov-12 22:35:17

I really want to put ours up but I have to wait till after dd's party on the 15th of December or there's won't be room for games and dancing!! And I like her to feel special on her birthday with banners and balloons.

Yanbu!!

That settles it.
I'm on benefits so I'll put them up

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 22:38:05

"If you have it up longer than that the balls will need dusting"

baubles dear, baubles.

No, balls.
Big, clangy ones.

gordyslovesheep Fri 23-Nov-12 22:39:37

NO it's NOVEMBER ffs

shesariver Fri 23-Nov-12 22:40:34

I didnt say it actually was Christmas - I know its not, I just dont get the "wait until December", what difference does a day or week or two make grin

apostropheuse yes you're right, just realised I missed the word Glasgow out blush....and I happen to agree with you, we do it as a tradition for our boys now but its not a patch on the days when I was wee and we were taken to see all the Christmas decorations, including the windows of Goldbergs etc, the 2 hour long wait to see Santa through the fantastically decorated grottos etc to.

dementedma Fri 23-Nov-12 22:40:38

Ours will go up December 15th

bedmonster Fri 23-Nov-12 22:42:19

Well if it's going to cheer you up then YADNBU!! It's way too early for me, can't contemplate it until at the most 7 - 10 days til Xmas (and it comes down on the 26th because we always go on holiday then!) but each to their own. Who's going to tell you YABU though? If it's what your family want then go for it!

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 22:43:05

Clangy balls?

Well anyone who has clangy balls should probably shouldn't be hanging them on their tree.

It's just not the done thing.

Wallison Fri 23-Nov-12 22:44:08

I'm sure you can get cream for that.

I did mine earlier.
Picked ds up from school and had the tree up with lights tis the boring bit
Yule log and mince pies on the table, Christmas music on and the decorations ready in a tub!
Ds and dd were made up.
After doing the tree we had hot choc with cream and watched The Snowman.
I normally put the tree up on the 1st of December but I am really busy for the next couple of weeks. excuses, excuses
grin

It is if you spray them silver grin

Figgygal Fri 23-Nov-12 22:45:36

Sorry but it is not Xmas yet, anything up before december is ridiculous and imo chavvy

Yabu

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 22:45:41

Oh Goldbergs had the best Christmas display ever. We went every year too. We even did the taxi thing like that advert. Take me to Goldbergs!

bedmonster Fri 23-Nov-12 22:47:39

Oh, and meant to add, DDs friend and family had put theirs up on Monday, and DD received her first Xmas card from them too - I think it's flipping early (cards written already??? Who is THAT organised?) but i've put cards on my list so they can write them over the next 2 weeks ready to give out at the beginning of Dec.

Noooooo.... All I can think of is how absolutely filthy minging dirty dusty the tree and accoutrements will be by the time it actually gets to Christmas.

Six weeks of having it all gathering dust (how the fuck do you clean a Christmas tree?) is just grim.

Ours don't go up until the weekend after the 12th, on the Sunday, once I've spent Saturday cleaning like a demon.

Father Christmas doesn't sneeze in my house grin.

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 22:50:05

*glitternickaz"

If you sprayed your balls silver you would be all coordinated.

I suppose that might be allowed.

But only in December, the month that Christmas actually occurs.

bedmonster Fri 23-Nov-12 22:51:38

Coola Accoutrements?!?!?! (I do know what it means, just never heard it used to describe Xmas tree tat!!!)

Just like to point out the "don't" in "Ours don't go up" refers to decorations plural, not just a tree. That would be "doesn't"....

wink

RobotLover68 Fri 23-Nov-12 22:52:29

A few years ago we put ours up in November

I'd been diagnosed with cancer the previous November so we'd had a shit Christmas and a horrible year following

We put it up early and we loved it, go for it

My The Snowman snowglobe lives on my kitchen windowsill all year round.

And I haven't put my tree up. (Not till after my DS birthday)

wink

So yes. YABU (with Christmas Bells on) grin

bed - what can I say? I like words - and that one is a particularly fine example that should be used far more often. (Not sure my ILs would agree, they don't seem to understand a lot of what I say hehehe!)

It will go up on December 23rd and not before, it's up until Epithany I'd be sick of the sight of it if I put it up now!

bedmonster Fri 23-Nov-12 22:59:01

I am going to strive to use it more!

And Horrace, when is Epithany? Forgive my ignorance... blush

M0naLisa Fri 23-Nov-12 23:03:15

Yes put it up grin
Mines up, went up on Tuesday.

I am 38 weeks (39 weeks tomorrow) pregnant so that's my excuse grin wink

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 23:11:05

The Feast of the Ephiphany is 6th January bedmonster.

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 23:11:29

oh excuse my typo...Epiphany

Clumsyoaf Fri 23-Nov-12 23:13:21

Mines going up tomorrow x

Err... that Buble bloke is singing Jingle Bells on Graham Norton.

bedmonster Fri 23-Nov-12 23:42:02

I thought it was Epiphany!! Could you explain what it means apostropheuse?

Bunnygotwhacked Fri 23-Nov-12 23:45:45

put em up the only reason we are waiting until next saturday is because it's my birthday the tree going up is a birthday tradition even if i am itching to do it sooner

Floralnomad Fri 23-Nov-12 23:49:19

Mines going up next weekend , I've arranged to be away so I will just leave instructions ! It will be back down on about the 28th Dec. this weekend is for putting up outside lights so they are ready to turn on on the 1st.

apostropheuse Fri 23-Nov-12 23:51:34

It's to celebrate when the three kings brought the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. That's traditionally when countries like Italy exchange gifts, rather than Christmas.

bedmonster Sat 24-Nov-12 00:01:46

Ah thankyou apostropheuse, do you and your DC not open presents on Xmas day then but on Epiphany? Or have I got it all wrong? Oh just bash me over the head with a shovel will you!!

apostropheuse Sat 24-Nov-12 00:08:24

oh my goodness no...we open ours on Christmas morning. Early. Very early.

I live in the UK - I was just explaining what it means! It's a Christian feast. It's also where the twelve days of Christmas comes from. (6th January being the twelfth day)

I believe in some places they exchange gifts both at Christmas and the Epiphany.

RafaellaNhaKyria Sat 24-Nov-12 00:26:00

DD and I put ours up today, and decorated. I've never done it this early, but I'm waiting for the court date to finalize my divorce and frankly, I really need the cheering up. I love Christmas so much, and I don't get sick of it in one month.

The whole "chav" cry that comes up periodically on MN is just pathetic. It makes you sound so very judgmental, fake and shallow.

I don't decorate or put a tree up until around 15th December. I won't buy anything connected with Christmas until December and tend to remove decorations gradually between 2 and 5 January so it doesn't suddenly look cold and miserable. For me, keeping it to that length keeps it special.

But if it will cheer you up, YANBU. Unless you want to cover your house in fucking lights top to bottom which personally makes me want to kill people.

CarrotCruncher Sat 24-Nov-12 01:09:22

I think xmas tree should go up at the start of December

80sMum Sat 24-Nov-12 01:16:14

If it's an artificial tree and won't be shedding all its needles by the middle of December, then why not? If you enjoy seeing the tree up and it cheers you up then go for it!
It's such an effort putting the thing up, one might as well get good mileage out of it.
I've changed my tune over the years. When DCs were little we always used to wait till Christmas Eve and put the tree upthen after they'd gone to bed, so it would look lovely and Christmassy when they came down in the morning.

TerrorNotSoFrightened Sat 24-Nov-12 01:33:24

Do whatever makes you happy and to hell with what people think.

Ours goes up the 2nd weekend in December.

rosieposey Sat 24-Nov-12 01:49:42

I usually put ours up on the 1st week in December - I love Christmas! However this year I was given a due date of Dec 25th for dc 5 and knew that it'd be at least a couple of weeks earlier than that due to complications.

My consultant has just moved c section date to this coming Friday 30th ( nearly a month early) so I will be out of action for a few weeks, it has to be done this weekend, I don't care if it's a bit early - its literally my favourite time of the year and will be even more special this year with a 3 week old lo to cuddle smile

RedHelenB Sat 24-Nov-12 08:21:09

Jingle bells is a winter song though, no references to Christmas!

annabeldp Sat 24-Nov-12 08:21:58

I think we're going to do ours on Wednesday - we're off to see family abroad for Christmas in a couple of weeks so if we don't do it soon I'll have no time to appreciate it. Go for it!

Mine's up. Normally wait until December, but DH told the toddler it was going up and he got a tad obsessed...

Christmas tree please mummy
Christmas tree please mummy
Christmas tree please mummy
Christmas tree please mummy
Christmas tree please mummy
Christmas tree please mummy
Christmas tree please mummy

OrangeLily Sat 24-Nov-12 08:30:01

I want to put ours up too but we're having a party next weekend and need to wait until afterwards. Going to hold out until dec 1st, after that every weekend is busy.., perfect excuse!

Christmas shopping today though!

Janeatthebarre Sun 25-Nov-12 14:38:05

YABU. Christmas trees should go up mid Dec and stay up til 6th January.

CrunchyFrog Sun 25-Nov-12 14:58:33

My next door neighbour put theirs up the day the Hallowe'en stuff came down! We're doing ours next week.

onedev Sun 25-Nov-12 23:06:15

Ours is up - yippee grin

shesariver Sun 25-Nov-12 23:12:10

Christmas trees should go up mid Dec and stay up til 6th January.

Is that the law then?

whathaveiforgottentoday Sun 25-Nov-12 23:24:26

Law in this house and I think all houses is that Christmas decorations can go up in December and not before. Had this very conversation with dd's today and I said its the law of Mummy.

I'm tempted to write 'WHY' on postcards and post them through letter boxes of houses who already have their decorations up. I wouldn't of course but very tempted.

onedev Sun 25-Nov-12 23:32:11

The rule is the Sunday after Thanksgiving - simples grin

bondigidum Mon 26-Nov-12 00:07:21

Amused that putting your decorations up too early is 'chavvy'.. I'm amazed at how much constitutes towards being chavvy according to some on here.

I put mine up either 30 nov or 1st dec but I would happily have them up all year round if I was allowed. They make me so happy! The room is bare without.

Morloth Mon 26-Nov-12 08:28:17

Ours goes up first weekend in December and down first weekend in January.

If you want yours up now, why not? It is your tree and your Christmas, it doesn't matter, make yourself happy.

thebody Mon 26-Nov-12 08:35:18

Gosh, really hope the poster who encourages her children to shout chav as people have put up their tree, is joking.

We have had a terrible year after nearly loosing dd in an accident.

She wants the tree up this weekend to cheer her up and so we have.

VivaLeBeaver Mon 26-Nov-12 08:35:24

Mine is up. Put it up on Saturday.

Last week I thought this weekend just gone was the first weekendin dec. so promised dd we would put it p at the weekend. On Friday I realised it was still November but dd was so excited we had to doit anyway.

impty Mon 26-Nov-12 09:15:33

Well mine won't be up until half way through December. But you do what you like!
Merry Christmas! grin

OptimisticPessimist Mon 26-Nov-12 09:21:19

Ours is going up this weekend - we always put it up the first weekend in December and take everything down on NYD ready for DS1's birthday on the 2nd.

Mosschopz Mon 26-Nov-12 09:23:20

12 days of Christmas start Christmas Eve, end twelfth night, not as some folk think 12 days before the day.

YouOldSlag Mon 26-Nov-12 09:36:00

Ours went up this weekend and I couldn't give a flying shiny, Christmassy shit if it bothers anyone.

Why on earth do people get upset by a Christmas tree in November? Does it hurt people? Is it noisy? Am I asking people to pay for it? Is my Christmas Tree blocking your drive?

It's late November and I have two small children who love it. I remain unapologetic.

I would also like to say thank you to the people who are tolerant and say "do Christmas however you like".That's the spirit! How other people celebrate or don't celebrate Christmas causes me no bother at all, and my Christmas shouldn't bother them either.

I've had my share of lonely, skint and depressed Christmases. My DH has had Depression and only recently got a job after a long period of unemployment. We have two children who make it all magical and it's our time now. It's cheered us all up and helped us look back with relief that a bad couple of years is over.

Happy Christmas!

MamaGeekChic Mon 26-Nov-12 09:41:58

Just nearly sprayed coffee over my laptop at 'is my christmas tree blocking your drive?' *youoldslag' you've brightened up my morning... I may even put my christmas tree up now in your honour.

YouOldSlag Mon 26-Nov-12 09:44:26

Mama- thank you! Join my Christmassy Club! smile

sue52 Mon 26-Nov-12 09:51:21

we usually put ours up the Saturday before Christmas day and have a party that evening. It kicks off Chistmas for me. I don't mind when other people have theirs. Each to their own.

YouOldSlag Mon 26-Nov-12 09:56:36

I don't mind when other people have theirs. Each to their own.

Exactly. And that's how it should be.

MegaClutterSlut Mon 26-Nov-12 10:06:17

Mine will go up this saturday, I always put mine up the first weekend of december smile

I couldn't give a shit either when other people put theirs up
