To be shocked by Helen smoking on I'm a Celebrity?

Just that really, was surprised to see smoking on such a popular show. Not that I particularly object to smoking but it seemed a bit unnecessary, especially as its popular with so many kids. Aibu? Should I chill the hell out?!!!

WipsGlitter Tue 13-Nov-12 22:02:32

I was surprised to see Max smoking on eastenders earlier.

mrskeithrichards Tue 13-Nov-12 22:02:39

What? You got a grip on your Christmas list?

winterhill Tue 13-Nov-12 22:02:45

I think you should give up watching celebrity and find something less boring to do instead.

mrskeithrichards Tue 13-Nov-12 22:03:09

Max is always smoking!

Parisbanana Tue 13-Nov-12 22:03:29

Is it Helen you're surprised at, or smoking in general on the show? Because Eric Bristow has been smoking in pretty much every shot he's been on the telly.

kenanddreary Tue 13-Nov-12 22:04:07

YANBU - just said exactly the same thing to DH.

Rushyswife Tue 13-Nov-12 22:06:32

Think I've never really noticed it before! (Obviously not very observant) think it was unfortunate that she was puffing away just as the camera cut to a close up of her! Point taken that I should not spend so much time on brain rot, but I love some trashy TV!

Gosh yeah - do you think maybe all those kids watching don't know cigarettes exist? I bet that's right - poor things have no idea. Or had, till now. Get onto whoever it is people complain to when things on telly shock them to their very core!

WipsGlitter Tue 13-Nov-12 22:07:31

I've never really noticed max smoking, but I'm not really paying attention normally m

suburbophobe Tue 13-Nov-12 22:08:47

Oh, purlease..

Is that the height of your problems?

<wow>

flyoverthegoldenhill Tue 13-Nov-12 22:09:12

tis past the watershed smile

EugenesAxe Tue 13-Nov-12 22:10:29

YABU - I just saw it and thought 'Wow, she's lucky to have been allowed them in The Jungle'.

It seems weird to talk of an addiction being 'unnecessary' - like the producers thought 'Ooo! I know what'll spice up the show - we'll ask one of the Celebrities to smoke a bit now and then.'

I was shocked how many of the Celebrities I actually knew on sight...

AbeLincoln Tue 13-Nov-12 22:10:44

Well... TBH the sight of a fag in her mouth might keep some people from looking at her pendulous breasts... Token eyecandy anyone...?

LadyStark Tue 13-Nov-12 22:11:15

Popular with kids? Really?!

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles Tue 13-Nov-12 22:11:27

Helen who? No tv in our house. I'm guessing mirren, Guv. I bet she smokes.

WorraLiberty Tue 13-Nov-12 22:11:32

What? You got a grip on your Christmas list?

This ^^ totally grin

Have you never seen Big Brother OP?

Most of the conversation and gossip goes on in the smoking area.

AnyaKnowIt Tue 13-Nov-12 22:12:11

Well after what she had just ate, I don't blame her for having a fag tbh

Caerlaverock Tue 13-Nov-12 22:12:23

Smoking would be the least of my worries if my kids where watching that brain rot

FermezLaBouche Tue 13-Nov-12 22:14:21

Like it or not, smoking is a perfectly legal habit.
If you're worried about your children seeing it and being tempted to try, all you can do is educate them on the possible horrible consequences of it and hope they make the right choices. I'm one of four. My brother (26) and sister (16) smoke but my other brother and I do not. we drink like fishes instead

Rushyswife Tue 13-Nov-12 22:14:31

Woah Suburbophobe and badger i said I was a bit shocked not that it was causing me grief! It's pretty clear from the title of my post that its a particularly 'deep' aibu!

FermezLaBouche Tue 13-Nov-12 22:15:07

Smoking would be the least of my worries if my kids where watching that brain rot

Bugger - I meant THAT!

thekidsrule Tue 13-Nov-12 22:15:37

i was more suprised she ate the testicle myself

Is it permitted to eat testicles in the workplace?

WorraLiberty Tue 13-Nov-12 22:24:48

No it's not, Badgers

You have to consider nut allergies.

AnyaKnowIt Tue 13-Nov-12 22:28:54

''You have to consider nut allergies.''

<groans> grin

worra - that's the kind of bad joke that gets you featuring in threads on Site Stuff.

Just sayin'......................

grin

dontcallmehon Tue 13-Nov-12 22:36:55

Yes, I think I'd be more bothered about my kids thinking it was normal to eat animal genitals, or whatever else they eat on that show.

carabos Tue 13-Nov-12 22:37:51

Funny that someone who made such a fuss about putting a dead spider in her mouth thinks nothing of sucking poison into her lungs. Each to their own...

bedmonster Tue 13-Nov-12 22:42:36

grin OP I was shocked too, but mainly because I remember watching the episode where Raaawsie was born and havent watched Corrie since about then. In my head that was only about 2 years ago, so I got a shock when I saw her in the jungle full stop let alone SMOKING!!! grin

bedmonster Tue 13-Nov-12 22:43:06

Although thinking about it now, i'm not sure if it was when Raaawsie OR Soooophie was born...

WorraLiberty Tue 13-Nov-12 22:43:20

Fair point, well made there Badgers grin

Cozy9 Tue 13-Nov-12 23:01:40

You don't really get young attractive people on TV smoking anymore so I can see why it might be a surprise.

almapudden Tue 13-Nov-12 23:03:08

One of them was born in a taxi. That Don fella delivered her. I think that might have been Rosie.

MrsCantSayAnything Tue 13-Nov-12 23:06:55

People swill champagne, wine, beer.... on all kinds of shows. Alcohol is shit just as smoking is. That show is shit too. And kids shouldn't be watching it...it will as someone else said, rot their brains.

EnjoyResponsibly Tue 13-Nov-12 23:10:20

Surely, given her utter stupidity, no kid is actually going to look at poor Helen as an actual role model?

thebody Tue 13-Nov-12 23:12:23

Not so funny as when she came back all smiling to tell them she lost the challenge but she was soooo proud of herself.

And why does the daft bat wear war type makeup and that stupid red flappy bikini top... The other one off eastenders and the American one with the boxers nose( no idea who she is) look far more natural.

Any and Dec fab as ever though...

Mousefunk Wed 14-Nov-12 00:30:11

Don't watch it but wanted to say cozy9 is correct. Soaps stopped showing young people smoking a while back so that youngsters didn't think it was cool and copy.. So now only old uglies smoke a la Dot, Max and Cora (can't actually think of another smoker..) so yanbu for finding it surprising, its not as common anymore to see youngsters smoking on TV.

JudeFawley Wed 14-Nov-12 01:03:11

I was surprised too, it looked wrong, but I don't know why.

Cozy9 Wed 14-Nov-12 04:07:33

I think Steve McDonald sometimes smokes on Corrie.

apostropheuse Wed 14-Nov-12 05:53:26

worra grin

Lougle Wed 14-Nov-12 07:05:41

Actually, I wonder where it stands legally? If cameras are rolling and it's all screened, then the jungle has surely been made a set, which means it's illegal?

Lougle Wed 14-Nov-12 07:08:07

Oh, not illegal because it isn't enclosed.

janey68 Wed 14-Nov-12 07:09:35

Agree with the above. It just seems odd because we don't associate smoking with young attractive people- it hasn't been seen as cool for years and years now. Being totally honest if I'm wandering around town, the smokes will tend to be old men and women, or if they're younger they often seem to be overweight generally unhealthy Unattractive types. I expect someone will try to flame me for saying that but it's true. My SIL who is a secondary teacher says the smokers in her school tend to be the less able disaffected ones who aren't successful. So I agree that nowadays it strikes us as unusual to see someone young, apparently successful and attractive, smoking.

Having said all that, I also agree that the show is shite; why are you watching OP?!

LucieMay Wed 14-Nov-12 07:16:24

Janey, so if you're overweight you're automatically unattractive and unsuccessful... and if you're unattractive you're automatically unsuccessful? Strange correlation there between looks and success life.

Pinkpeacock Wed 14-Nov-12 08:37:49

What did the Police say?

Mrsjay Wed 14-Nov-12 08:45:18

Brian Hugo and eric all have been smoking on IMACELEB what are you shocked about, ? I did think she was showing off like a 15 yr old smoking at the live bit , they usually put the fags away for that, children are not going to be damaged by seeing people smoke on tv , Max on enders always smoked so does dot and cora , meh it is just a fag

Mrsjay Wed 14-Nov-12 08:46:32

oH do shush janey, lots of young people smoke a lot of thin attractive people smoke usually to keep the weight down (allegedly) would surprise you who smokes really

Fakebook Wed 14-Nov-12 08:46:56

YABU for watching that crap. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes.

Max only smokes when he's stressed about something.

Mrsjay Wed 14-Nov-12 08:48:17

they are outside how can it be illegal they are also In australia where laws maybe different, oh and they are outside , maybe alll the offended shouldn't watch Im a celeb hardly a high brow programme they scoff Animal arse fgs

Signet2012 Wed 14-Nov-12 08:50:51

I commented on it to dp. Nor because she smoked but the way she was smoking. I gor the impression maybe she didn't usually smoke for some reason. The Way she was holding it didn't seem very natural to her iykwim

valiumredhead Wed 14-Nov-12 08:54:09

Celebs have always smoked on BB and I'm A Celeb - it's nothing new.

Mrsjay Wed 14-Nov-12 08:59:45

I said that on the IMAC thread she doesn't look like she smokes a lot she wasn't hodling it right

fluffyraggies Wed 14-Nov-12 09:10:50

P'raps she's taken it up in there in an effort to keep her appetite down?

Mrsjay Wed 14-Nov-12 09:12:47

maybe she is starving or maybe her footballer fiancee doesnt like her smoking and she was being a rebel grin

fluffyraggies Wed 14-Nov-12 09:16:00

I'm blush that i'm watching it at all.

In my defense i watch it the day after and FF through 90% of it, just watching the actual trials and the celebs mooching about in camp. Takes it down to about 15 mins actual viewing time grin

lollilou Wed 14-Nov-12 09:37:26

I saw this and I must admit I raised my eyebrows a bit. I was a huge smoker only a few months ago and I don't think I am a rabid anti-smoker now, but my dd and I watch this show and I don't like seeing the younger ones smoking. My dearest wish is that smoking becomes very uncool so that no young people want to do it and become addicted for as long as I did.

valiumredhead Wed 14-Nov-12 09:41:09

I do that too FF grin

I love crap telly, I don't know why people get so snotty about it - sometimes I just want to veg and watch some funny, non taxing shit, in exactly the same way sometimes I don't always want to read a taxing book.

valiumredhead Wed 14-Nov-12 09:42:14

I don't think young people smoke anywhere near the amount they used to because of the price. I never see school kids smoking these days.

surfingbabies Wed 14-Nov-12 09:47:10

I was shocked too as my DD watches it but I do think the show in the afternoon edits out certain things! This is the first year my DD has been interested & I gather its only because 'everyone' at school is talking about it and she would feel left out grin

Mrsjay Wed 14-Nov-12 09:48:52

as a mum of teens smoking really is uncool yes my dds know a few people their age who smoke but they are not seen as cool at all , I am a smoker it was the stupidest thing i have ever did was starting again and my dds will tell me how horrible it is,

IAMU Wed 14-Nov-12 10:04:31

YABU. She isn't doing anything illegal. She is perfectly entitled to have a smoke if she wishes to. Smoking on tv isn't new. I'm a Celeb is on after the watershed, the likes of Eastenders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street are all before 9pm and each one shows actors smoking. Kids are more likely to watch those than I'm a Celeb, so if you want something to moan about, moan about the them!

And as others have said, there are a few who have been smoking so far in there, so why the shock now Helen has done it?

pictish Wed 14-Nov-12 10:08:26

Yabu. She smokes, so that's that.

FlyingFig Wed 14-Nov-12 10:50:44

YABU. She's an adult and the show isn't really aimed at kids anyway, it's on at 9pm.

There's far more boozing shown on TV; in fact one of my earliest memories is sitting in the bath filling up a shampoo bottle top, pretending to be Mike Baldwin, swilling my brandy glass grin.

No wonder I've got a taste for alcohol blush

Pinkpeacock Wed 14-Nov-12 11:56:23

I love the Mike Baldwin comment!

valiumredhead Wed 14-Nov-12 13:00:31

I've just watched it - I think she seemed 'unnatural' as she ws very nervous and was doing it in an attempt to calm herself down - poor thing is obviously terrified.
