to think that this week's M&S dine in for a tenner is a rip off?

mainly because the bottle of wine is only a half bottle!!

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Sat 10-Nov-12 20:10:22

And because it actually only feeds two not very hungry people - have you seen the steak?!

I have to spend another £7.00 supplementing it so there's enough for me and dh!

BraaaaaainsButterfield Sat 10-Nov-12 20:11:43

Half bottle? What?

I got a chicken pie, leek and bacon mash, millionaire's shortbread layered desserts and a full bottle of Pinot Grigio! The pie should have been £6.99 on its own grin

It is half a bottle coz it is one bottle for 2 people to share.

Agree with OP.

prelim29 Sat 10-Nov-12 20:18:29

well to be fair, DP bought it so he might have not quite understood the deal, but he came home with paella, some veg, an apple pie and a 60cl bottle of vin rouge..........

DilysPrice Sat 10-Nov-12 20:22:00

60cl? A 4/5 bottle?

BarredfromhavingStella Sat 10-Nov-12 20:22:01

YABU-we just had ours & it was bloody gorgeous!!

DilysPrice Sat 10-Nov-12 20:22:05

60cl? A 4/5 bottle?

Groovee Sat 10-Nov-12 20:22:48

Dh got a full normal sized bottle

LittleBearPad Sat 10-Nov-12 20:23:09

60cl is a very odd size for a bottle of wine? That's 4/5ths of a bottle.

TulisaLover Sat 10-Nov-12 20:23:25

It's a rip off every week IMHO. DP and I cook up a pork belly with some wonderful seasonal veg and a jug of water. Sum total, 40p per person.

HappySeven Sat 10-Nov-12 20:41:39

Pork belly for 40p? Where from?!?

TulisaLover Sat 10-Nov-12 20:43:41

We took delivery of a considerable amount of pork bellies after a futures contract expired before DP could sell it on. We're absolutely swimming in frozen pig goodness.

But if we weren't, I have my sources. The Waitrose deli counter 5 minutes before closing offers serious bargains for those who are skilled in the art of meat negotiation.

thenightsky Sat 10-Nov-12 20:44:03

Pork belly AND veg for 40p????

HappySeven Sat 10-Nov-12 20:47:38

But it's not possible for us all to do that, Tulisa. I take it you get your veg the same way?

TulisaLover Sat 10-Nov-12 20:49:32

The waitrose deli counter is open to everyone I believe, and the reduced veg section there and tesco always has incredible bargains provided you go at the right time. In this case the veg was home grown, but there's always a deal to be had when you're a savvy shopper and you don't let convenience dictate things.

TulisaLover Sat 10-Nov-12 20:50:36

The art of meat negotiation is an acquired skill, but to sum up the staff at the deli counters have considerable discretion in pricing. You just have to be bold enough to ask.

DilysPrice Sat 10-Nov-12 20:55:21

Oh dear heavens she's escaped shock

TulisaLover Sat 10-Nov-12 20:58:26

Don't believe me Dily? You just keep paying full price, and I'll just keep enjoying cheap, high quality food - fine with me!

HappySeven Sat 10-Nov-12 21:02:37

I agree it's available to all but we can't all wait until it's reduced or it wouldn't happen as too many people queued. Sadly I don't live near a supermarket that does reduced veg but good luck to you.

TulisaLover Sat 10-Nov-12 21:07:07

Thanks happy - i appreciate that it's not a thing everyone can do. I am lucky to have the facilities nearby. But do make sure you always keep an eye out for those red and yellow labels. Some people think the best way to shop is with a list that you stick to rigorously. I completely disagree - my way of shopping is to buy whatever is cheap, and make the best of it and enjoy the variety. It's served me very well and there's always a nutritious and healthy balance.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep Sat 10-Nov-12 21:39:26

Tulisa - please tell me you have, like, three hundredweight of pork belllies in the freezer grin
DH would die happy (from saturated fat overload, or some sort of gut explosion!)

Our Waitrose's reductions just make me angry. "Well, this was £5.99, but it's best before today, so you can have it for £5.49!!!" Cheers hmm

lovelyladuree Sat 10-Nov-12 21:52:02

Am I the only one amused by the fact that someone is acting smug because they have to live on pork belly for the next three months confused

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Sat 10-Nov-12 21:53:55

The art of meat negotiation is an acquired skill

Really?

TulisaLover Sat 10-Nov-12 21:53:55

Meat keeps a lot longer than the recommended time. The only thing that degrades is the quality - but that is slight and barely noticeable if one makes a stew.

BoakFace Sat 10-Nov-12 21:55:44

I never get how people can call them a rip off (your half bottle is an exception I suppose.)

They seem so cheap for what you get!

Cortana Sat 10-Nov-12 21:57:44

"HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey

Really?"

Depends how many beefy strippers a hen needs on her big night out.....

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Sat 10-Nov-12 21:59:10

Now see i could cope with that kind of negotiation Cortana

For a pork chop i just couldn't be arsed!

TulisaLover Sat 10-Nov-12 22:03:30

It all adds up. If you can't be arsed then fair play. 20 seconds of fluttering my eyelashes and sweet talk at the deli counter and I've saved a couple of quid. If you earn a couple of quid in twenty seconds, then you're right - don't bother.

Bookface - cheapness is in the eye of the beholder.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Sat 10-Nov-12 22:04:55

Good for you....i would not flutter my eyelashes to get anything cheap...people really fall for that shit....not my thing.

mum2threesons Sat 10-Nov-12 22:42:55

Tulisa. I'm totally with you on food bargains!
My OH and I have very very rarely bought meat full price..can't remember the last time we did tbh.
Today he can home with a huge beef sirloin joint which was 80% off and a gammon joint 75% cheaper.

TulisaLover envy

I cant get pork bellies here and I LOVE them

I just called a meatmarket someone told DH about to see if they can get me some,Ive to call back monday after he talks to his supplier, fingers crossed

Want a recipe on how to make your own bacon with said pork bellies, very very easy?

Oh and I never buy meat full price either,I find out whats on managers special,ie short time to sell by and buy the lot grin. I vacuum pack it an freeze it
Got a turkey today for 39 cents a pound grin

MyCannyBairn Sun 11-Nov-12 02:46:05

You don't need to prostitute yourself for the Waitrose meat bargains, you just go to the counter at closing time and ask. We have got some ludicrously large amounts of deli stuff for well under a quid.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Sun 11-Nov-12 08:21:57

You don't need to prostitute yourself for the Waitrose meat bargains that is what i wanted to say but had a bit to much wine for normal brain function

Thanks Canny
