to think leggings on their own is ridiculous

as they are basically a form of tights worn under a skirt or long top. Not worn as trousers like I see so much of, particularly teens or young students. My daughter has taken to this recently but its her choice, I have bigger battles to pick.

I suppose the false jeans kind make a BIT of sense but I still don't get it.

mirry2 Fri 05-Oct-12 21:58:37

I once saw a friend walking down the road in pale pink leggings with a jumper on top which just skimmed her hips. I really thought she had forgotten to put her dress/trousers on. It was obscene

I just look and think I'm getting old... It's a very strange look, but I used to wear leggings and long Tshirts 25 years ago.

Fakebook Fri 05-Oct-12 22:01:00

Yanbu. Why do people do it?

usualsuspect3 Fri 05-Oct-12 22:02:47

I think people can wear what they like.

DoMeDon Fri 05-Oct-12 22:03:18

Skin tight leggings and a crop top!! WTF is that about!?! It looks awful, any size, it's just wrong. Am sick of the sight of 'hoof'.

GoldenSeptember Fri 05-Oct-12 22:03:43

When I was young and thin, I lived in leggings. Now that I can't (without causing people to go blind and horses to be terrified), I think YANBU at all. wink

ImagineJL Fri 05-Oct-12 22:05:31

As far as I know, wearing leggings under a skirt is the "new" thing. I remember wearing leggings with a normal or longish T shirt in the 80s. I remember being surprised when people started wearing skirts over leggings - as if they couldn't decide whether to wear skirt or trousers, so decided to wear both!

TheCountessOlenska Fri 05-Oct-12 22:05:49

I live next door to a University, this year they are all wearing leggings with nothing on over the top, tis not a forgiving look!

WanderingWhistle Fri 05-Oct-12 22:05:54

I'm 29 and have worn leggings and long jumpers every winter but oly for 3 years lol. I love them, pics of my hubbies sister in the 80s have the same outfits as me.
A I know it's not new!

I hope you mean leggings with a short top are horrible, not with w long top. Because I'm sure not the oly one wearing them.
If you mean like the link, yanbu.

MysteriousHamster Fri 05-Oct-12 22:06:15

People just don't think about what they look like from behind.

I was walking behind very slim young girl the other day. She very very obviously had giant white knickers underneath her leggings, which she had worn with a short t-shirt. It just looked daft.

Even the first time I wore leggings (90s), I always did with quite long t-shirts.

You can only get away with it if they are really thick to the point of them just being jegging/treggings/skinny black trousers.

santaisNOTathreat Fri 05-Oct-12 22:07:30

can i redeem myself and say in my own home i wear leggings and a vest top to excercise.

MousyMouse Fri 05-Oct-12 22:09:03

have seen someone today wearing a clingy skirt in leggings material. bridget-jones-style knickers showing through.

missvague Fri 05-Oct-12 22:09:30

Leggings are never a trouser.

Softlysoftly Fri 05-Oct-12 22:10:01

Is it me or is the linked image a bit intrusive? It feels a bit wrong someone snuck up behind her to take a photo of her arse, I know she looks ridiculous but still. Just doesn't feel like a moral thing to do.

wonkylegs Fri 05-Oct-12 22:11:04

I was walking behind a girl in very thing leggings and a short top this morning - it was glaringly obvious that she had nothing on underneath. From behind it looked bad thank god I didn't have to look from the front blush

usualsuspect3 Fri 05-Oct-12 22:11:17

I think it's a bit mean to take the piss out of the way other people dress , full stop TBH.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos Fri 05-Oct-12 22:11:24

There are a few, people, very few people, that can actually pull off this look. It's not one I particularly like on anyone, but the problem isn't the leggings, it the women who think they have the figure to wear leggings without a bum covering top. It can look ok if you have the perfect arse, but the majority of people don't.

wonkylegs Fri 05-Oct-12 22:11:32

*thin not thing

manticlimactic Fri 05-Oct-12 22:11:44

My DD wears them with long tops. She makes sure they aren't see through. But she's 16 and v.slim envy

SoleSource Fri 05-Oct-12 22:12:18

changeforthebetter Fri 05-Oct-12 22:14:16

usualsuspect ITA - enough with the clothing police. Shock horror! Woman with chubby thighs wears leggings - it's not exactly the bombing of Aleppo/massive financial fraud perpetrated by the banks, is it?

Anonymumous Fri 05-Oct-12 22:16:31

Are we allowed to wear leggings and a cropped top to the gym? Only I usually start off wearing a T-shirt over the top but get so hot after five minutes that I end up taking the T-shirt off. (I do put it back on before I go home though...)

P.S. What is 'hoof'? blush

mirry2 Fri 05-Oct-12 22:16:35

Just don't wear pale pink ones, if you are white skinned (sorry, had to think about that. Is the word caucasian?)

usualsuspect3 Fri 05-Oct-12 22:16:43

No but it's a bit bloody spiteful.

IneedAsockamnesty Fri 05-Oct-12 22:17:00

i think people can dress up as giant toothbrushes if the fancy takes them

BegoniaBampot Fri 05-Oct-12 22:17:02

Saw a group of young girls like this. All bar one had on black leggings and cropped tops. It looked dull and boring and like some kind of uniform. and they all looked like Max Wall, remember him.

usualsuspect3 Fri 05-Oct-12 22:19:49

Hark at all the fashionistas on this thread.

GoldenSeptember Fri 05-Oct-12 22:19:53

grin at Max Wall - that's what my mum and Sdad used to liken me to in my leggings and DMs. Yes leggings must be worn with long t-shirts, obviously. wink

Startailoforangeandgold Fri 05-Oct-12 22:20:14

Back in the 80's when leggings were invented they were a decent thickness.

The trouble is the modern ones are shiteangry

ivykaty44 Fri 05-Oct-12 22:20:14

It really doesn't look very nice and often leaves nothing at all to the imagination which is pretty gross when out and about.

Bluestocking Fri 05-Oct-12 22:20:55

Countess, the campus where I work is heaving with girls wearing very flimsy leggings with short tops. Not so bad from the front but usually unforgivable from the back. To quote Ogden Nash "You look divine as you advance . . . Have you seen yourself retreating?"

panicnotanymore Fri 05-Oct-12 22:22:12

I am in that unfortunate position of being too pregnant for my usual clothes, but not pregnant enough for maternity trousers to stay up. Leggings are my only choice. I do my best to find arse covering tops, but on the days where I have nothing left that manages to cover bump and butt forgive me.

cerealqueen Fri 05-Oct-12 22:24:04

YANBU. Especially the patterned leggongs where the pattern becomes distorted out of all recognition as it is so s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d.

scottishmummy Fri 05-Oct-12 22:29:09

how disgusting to link a picture probably taken unawares
you think the lassie consented to that
it's nasty picture to prove puerile point about attire

SaggyOldClothCatPuss Fri 05-Oct-12 22:32:00

I quite agree. Im my day, <<old gimmer>> leggings were trousers. nice and thick, and totally not seethrough! Nowadays, they are just footless tights!
I spend a lot if time people watching at work, and its really never a good look!
The trouble is that NOTHING is left to the imagination. And even if you have the pertest bum in the world, in leggings, its going to jiggle unpleasantly.

Startailoforangeandgold Fri 05-Oct-12 23:39:50

Why are they so thin?

DD2 has some footless tights, bought labeled as such and DD1 has some M&S angel leggings. The difference in thickness is negligible. In fact I think DD2s tights might be more decent.

Sarahplane Fri 05-Oct-12 23:53:43

Yadnbu. Its a hideous sight on anyone. Leggings are not trousers. when will people learn. Leggings and dresses or big jumpers are ok but not shirt tops.

Quadrangle Sat 06-Oct-12 00:10:46

YANBU. Even if someone has the most perfect figure in the world it still looks bad IMO. I don't want to see the exact shape of someone's bum cheeks and camel toe.

santaisNOTathreat Sat 06-Oct-12 00:13:54

it is ok to excercise in the gym/home

LDNmummy Sat 06-Oct-12 00:15:04

I don't give a rats behind if a person has a whole load of extra weight or an arse as tight as the back of a fiat 500, I just hate walking behind someone on the steps when exiting the crowded tube station to find the persons arse stuck in my face with little left to the imagination. Leggings are thin enough and tight enough to almost be an undergarment IMO. All I see is your naked arse and the outline of your vaj if you wear them without something over the crotch area.

I may sound like a perv but that's what I see. Its great if you want to attract a partner I suppose, but very off putting for me. And I am in my 20's and could wear them that way if I wanted but choose to wear something over them for that very reason.

Topshop do thick ones (silly prices though, £18) and I wear mine with plain "oversized tops" (more ridiculous prices) or heavy jumpers and Docs. They're easy, warm, comfortable.

I think they flatter people most of the time, they're just like a second skin, but other people seem to have such a huge problem with the leggings as trousers thing that I don't do it myself.

FellatioNelson Sat 06-Oct-12 05:56:39

I cannot stand seeing people wearing leggings like trousers. Especially as they are usually really thin fabric and you can completely see their knickers through them. They just look like tights and the woman ends up looking like a bit of a nutter.

Utterly revolting, ridiculous, nasty, tacky etc, etc.

LesleyPumpshaft Sat 06-Oct-12 05:59:50

I know what you mean by the 'hoof'. I don't understand it, because I make a real point of not having the hoof and it's the sort of thing I would definitely check before leaving the house. confused I'm too old to wear leggings and a short top anyway.

What people wear is up to them, but I'm curious, do they actually know that everyone can see their knickers?

Is it such a big mystery, knicker-wearing? hmm who cares!

FellatioNelson Sat 06-Oct-12 07:32:33

It looks grim. If you don't care about looking grim then fine, but I don't want to see your arse cheeks and your clopper in such scary detail thanks!

LesleyPumpshaft Sat 06-Oct-12 07:36:34

Clopper. grin Never heard it called that before.

LST Sat 06-Oct-12 07:40:59

I personally give a shit. And again I find it pathetic that so many people do.

pigletmania Sat 06-Oct-12 07:43:35

Oh dear better put my leggings away then grin. Some of the cheaper leggings are so thin, but next do some in decent thickness

FellatioNelson Sat 06-Oct-12 07:43:48

I learnt it off Mumsnet. grin

FairPhyllis Sat 06-Oct-12 07:44:54

Eh? Leggings are a bit thicker than tights, no? The ones I had in the 90s were. Surely if you can see someone's knickers they are not really leggings?

LesleyPumpshaft Sat 06-Oct-12 07:45:08

Can I steal it FellatioNelson? Still very amused by the work clopper. grin

pigletmania Sat 06-Oct-12 07:45:25

I do try and wear a long jumper, top or coat over them. They are so comfy though, especially when jeans dig into my muffin top grin

FellatioNelson Sat 06-Oct-12 07:47:00

I like them under stuff, it looks great, but you really do need to cover your arse fully. Even if your arse is nice, you still need to cover it. Would you go out in just tights with no skirt or trousers? No. you wouldn't. Except that, hang on.....that's exactly what you are doing.

pigletmania Sat 06-Oct-12 07:48:03

Hareem pants don't get me started on them, look like an oversized nappy

LesleyPumpshaft Sat 06-Oct-12 07:48:38

I like to wear leggings and role them down, as I have a massive scar across my stomach. Having anything tight against that area is very unpleasant indeed. I wear long tops and stuff that covers my arse. My arse has succumbed to gravity these days, so I'd rather keep it hidden anyway.

Startail is right. In the 80s they were like trousers, much thicker, less stretchy, and there were ski pants too. Remember those?

FellatioNelson Sat 06-Oct-12 07:52:41

Yes, leggings and ski pants were more or less the same thing, excess ski pants had that little stirrup thing. The reasonably young ans svelte could get away with ski pants and a shortish top but they didn't cling to your front bottom - they were more like trousers.

These ones sold as leggings now are really not much more than footless tights.

FellatioNelson Sat 06-Oct-12 07:53:14

except, not excess. don't know where that came from confused

FayeKinitt Sat 06-Oct-12 07:53:25

I don't mind them, I'm envious of those slim enough to wear them with a short top.

It was rather embarrassing when a 20ish woman walked past the other day wearing pale peachy ones and DD (2.9) shouted 'Mummy! Rooody noodie!' and pointed blush TBF, I had to do a double take, she did look naked!

flipandfill Sat 06-Oct-12 08:05:10

Personally, I do think they are really un flattering when worn with a short top- bum and camel toe needs to be covered to look good. I did see a girl who had a very thin pair, a short top and her bum appeared to be eating her leggings- just not very attractive- yet if she had a longer tunic, she would have looked lovely. Yes, people can wear what they want- but why wear something which makes you look bigger/wobblier... a long top is a simple solution.

nellyjelly Sat 06-Oct-12 08:08:40

Leggings are horrible IMO. Useful for the gym or for little kids though.

Peacocklady Sat 06-Oct-12 08:11:45

I was just wondering yesterday why some people would wear beige tight trousers, they show off all lumps and bumps and also look like they've forgotten their trousers. This tight trouser fashion is just not good!
I wear black leggings under long tunics and they look fine, you can get really thick ones from Gok range in Sainsburys but they are boiling!

Nagoo Sat 06-Oct-12 08:26:25

people where I live actually do wear opaque tights as trousers. I mean 80 denier black tights with a hoody shock

I saw a woman getting in her car with a t-shirt on and her pink pants showing through woolly grey tights. It still shames me that I didn't stop her.

LesleyPumpshaft Sat 06-Oct-12 08:29:03

people where I live actually do wear opaque tights as trousers. I mean 80 denier black tights with a hoody shock

It looks like they do round here too.

LST Sat 06-Oct-12 08:36:08

My leggings aren't like tights. I try to wear long tops but being over 6 ft it's quite a task to find any. People should stop being so ridiculously judgmental.

hopenglory Sat 06-Oct-12 08:36:35

It's certainly not a look that would work on me.

It's still shorts and tights as the preferred student attire near us, and I must confess to smiling when the shorts don't cover the control panel in the tights

issimma Sat 06-Oct-12 08:41:33

Yanbu. I wear them as tights, but then I'm old enough to be the mother of a teenager grin.

RuleBritannia Sat 06-Oct-12 08:45:19

To save money buying his own, my husband wore my leggings for his pilates classes with a tee shirt.

midori1999 Sat 06-Oct-12 08:48:53

YANBU, I have no clue why people do it and I really don't want to see someone's underwear and arse cheeks (and towel with wings it seems in the linked picture!) when I am out and about and I am no prude...

Surely they can't knowingly go out with their under crackers showing? Although surely they must know as they must notice on other people?

I wouldn't have a problem with leggings and short tops so much if the leggings weren't so thin and see through, these are definitely not meant to be worn as a trouser.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Sat 06-Oct-12 08:53:32

YANBU every morning when i drop the dds at school i am confronted with an array of various cheap leggings showing the the wearers knickers, tis a horrid site.

Even the dds are starting to look a bit hmm when they see them.

Buy some thick ones or wear a long top.

GragPop Sat 06-Oct-12 09:00:17

Long top - Yes
Short top - No

YouMayLogOut Sat 06-Oct-12 10:19:50

They always used to be thick enough to look like trousers, which was fine. But for the thin ones which look like tights, and are often see-through, YANBU!

YouMayLogOut Sat 06-Oct-12 10:21:55

> "I must confess to smiling when the shorts don't cover the control panel in the tights"

grin Couldn't figure that out for a a minute, I was thinking "control panel" as in computer!

WinklyFriedChicken Sat 06-Oct-12 10:29:18

Yesterday I could see through a young slim woman's leggings to the point where I could see she was wearing white knickers with pink and blue hearts. I don't think it takes a fashionista to know she should have.covered her arse.

foslady Sat 06-Oct-12 12:28:07

You think leggings are bad - I had to face a woman wearing watch looked like 40 den tights the other day - complete with turquoise knickers - and a cropped top. And YES they were definately tights - ugh!

YouMayLogOut Sat 06-Oct-12 12:33:08

Do these people know their underwear is visible? I'm sure it's a mistake for some people but is it some kind of fashion statement? confused Otherwise wouldn't they have realised?

porcamiseria Sat 06-Oct-12 12:35:08

depends on your arse, and the quality of the leggings

owch at that facebook/gstring/panty liner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UsingAPsuedonym Sat 06-Oct-12 12:46:19

I think they can only be worn with a tunic or long top. Just looks like they haven't got dressed otherwise. But then I don't think leggings and short tops look nice on little girls either.

I hate leggings, whether with short tops or long ones, so wouldn't wear them myself.
I don't really care if other people wear them though, I'm sure I look ridiculous to many people too grin

YADNBU. Now that thicker ones that don't show all are becoming popular I'm not minding them as such, it is mainly the really thin ones I dislike. Why do you want the world to see your underwear?! Or lack of it!

Sports shops tend to do some decent, thick and warm leggings and they are very handy for climbing and yoga according to my climbing partner!

Startailoforangeandgold Sat 06-Oct-12 19:27:09

Yes, I lived in ski pants, boots and long baggy (very naff), black and bright coloured jumpers as a student.

I'd completely forgotten we tended to call leggings with stirrups ski pants.

Quadrangle Sat 06-Oct-12 19:36:35

In the 80s leggings didn't have lycra and used to get massive knee shapes in them which didn't look good. I think that no matter how thick the leggings and no matter how perfect the figure , they need the bum covered. There was a mum on the nursery pickup who had a great figure and thick leggings, but her camel toe did not look good. I just don't want to see the exact shape of someone's arse cheeks, no matter how perfect that arse is!

Notcontent Sat 06-Oct-12 19:57:09

I wore leggings with fairly short tops as a teenager in the late 80s and early 90s. They did have Lycra in them but they were also much thicker. Yes, you could see all the bumps, etc but they were not see-through. They were also more expensive - you couldn't buy really cheap ones then.

I think the problem now is that a lot of people buy the really cheap ones, and obviously don't have a mirror.... Quite a few times I have been so tempted to say "do you realise that everyone can see your pants???"

LDNmummy Sun 07-Oct-12 17:09:21

They still sell the thick 90's style leggings that I remember my mum used to wear, isn't that what they call tregging's?

I wish she hadn't given them all away to charity now. In fact I wish she hadn't given a lot of stuff away to charity now sad

The worst leggings I have seen have to be these hareem leggings

cocolepew Sun 07-Oct-12 17:20:13

They were definitely much thicker in the old days grin. I could wear them with a short top and there was no knickers peeking through. I rocked the Max Wall look as well!

gazzalw Sun 07-Oct-12 17:20:48

DD (6) has very, very long legs and has loads of leggings (partly because normal trousers just look very puffy on her very slim legs). However, DW always intended her to wear them with dresses over the top. This morning she went out with just a top and leggings on and she looked like a runner slim and the look just made her look like a pencil line!

When women used to wear them in the 1980s wasn't the trend to wear them with Breton tops and the like? They looked okay then IMHO, but this trend to wearing them with very skimpy, short jumpers/tops and a short jacket (which leaves the bottom exposed) is just bleuh

fiventhree Sun 07-Oct-12 17:26:25

Hmmm... for myself, no.

For DD1 and 2 (24 and 16) , they look delightful however they wear them.

Lesson may be to teach our children to wear matching underwear under thinner clothes?

NorbertDentressangle Sun 07-Oct-12 17:35:14

lol at the 'Max Wall' look. That brings back memories as my Dad used to say that I looked like him when I wore leggings with Doc Martens (and had sparrow legs).

I agree though that leggings back in the 80s were much thicker and you couldn't see your pants through them unless you bought really cheap ones.

DD was scarred for life recently when she saw a neighbour with leggings and a short waist length top bend over and pick something up as we were walking past -we had a great view of her size 20 floral granny style pants through the leggings!

dondon33 Sun 07-Oct-12 17:36:10

YANBU- I wear them as tights under skirts or dresses.
I'll wear them alone at home, with a vest top, for exercising or as PJ's but wouldn't dream of heading out on the streets with my arse and--often lack of-- knickers on show.

Maybe this should be sold next to the leggings in shops smile

perfectstorm Sun 07-Oct-12 17:37:49

I used to live in leggings, huge jumpers and Doc Martens when I was late teens and early 20s. I looked really good in them, tbh, and am glad I carped the bloody diem. I can say that now, looking down at the wreck that is my late babies body! grin

I like seeing young people wearing clothes that celebrate their all-too-fleeting gorgeousness. Let 'em enjoy it while they can!

monkeysbignuts Sun 07-Oct-12 17:41:30

I am pregnant and live in my leggings at the minute. Its been since 37 weeks and everything else is so uncomfortable. I look pretty shit and stupid but I so don't care at the minute haha. yanbu!

Lueji Sun 07-Oct-12 17:44:08

Worse when I see older women (my age) wear them.

I think it's ok with long jumpers or T-shirts, or short dresses.

cocolepew Sun 07-Oct-12 17:56:23

I've just started to wear them again with dresses and motorbike boots. God but they're comfy.

BOOGERSnLICEnNOTHINGnice Sun 07-Oct-12 18:04:06

I don't wear leggings. I do however wear 100 denier tights with black short shorts and a normal length top. It's the best of both worlds - I'm pretty much completely covered up but can still move incredibly freely. The problem reality is that people think I am wearing tights as leggings. Do I care? Not really, no.

And for the starers (of which there are many!), I can assure you that I am wearing shorts and my knickers aren't visible, no matter how hard you crane your necks grin might also have something to do with my g-string fetish

shemademegay Fri 21-Feb-14 23:12:38

I typed into google 'what to wear with leggings' and this link came up! I've read through and it seems a good percentage of people on here are total fascists on the matter! people can wear/say/act/look/talk however they like!!!! as long as you are not physically or mentally hurting anyone, NOTHING you are doing is wrong! there is nothing wrong with wearing leggings as "pants" (as they say in America land) and it also doesn't matter what size you are! if said person feels comfortable, sexy, warmer, cuter, more confident or for any other reason wearing leggings, it is up to them and no one else! they should in return, not be made to feel bad or disgusting or "cheap" as so many of you lot seem to imply for doing so!!! this has really pi**ed me off, how people can be such bi**hes about a subject that really does have any relevance to them and doesn't (or at least shouldn't) effect their lives in any way, shape or form!

I was wanting to know what to wear with leggings because my girlfriend recently got some as she has gained some confidence to wear them after loosing a bit of weight! she is still a size 14 but would really like to wear them now! she would however like something that covered up her front "parts" and a bit of her bottom (only due to confidence issues, not because it is wrong to not do i may add) so was looking for tops that might be slightly longer at the front than the back. All i found was people bitching about how leggings are not trousers/pants....well, they kind of or totally are!

i'm not a huge fan of dresses with big cut outs in the side but they are still dresses!! and people can wear them if they like...makes no difference to my life at all! I don't really like turned up jeans but they're still jeans! and again...go for it if you like!

sorry to all the people on here who are not slagging people off for the clothes they decide to wear...well done for just being a kind person! also, i notice this is an OLD thread so sorry for resurrecting it but it cropped up on google and i felt something needed to be said!

people...get about your own lives...wear whatever makes you happy...

CoffeeTea103 Fri 21-Feb-14 23:19:40

Leggings are like skinny jeans, it only suits certain body types.

TheBakeryQueen Fri 21-Feb-14 23:20:31

To be honest, they look fine if the wearer has a good figure & they are decent quality.

I don't like the bitchy tone of the majority of the posts on this thread.

justanuthermanicmumsday Fri 21-Feb-14 23:34:35

Not ridiculous it's personal taste doesn't bother me what others wear. , I've just never liked them and never had a pair. I can think of some situations where it would be practical dance lessons, yoga? Long or short top doesn't bother me as long as it's not on my body.

I think I bought one outfit for my girls with leggings and then I regretted it, I just don't like them, can't explain why. they're not tights and they're not trousers they're confused .

Ppl forget some leggings are sheer some opaque. If you get the wrong size and stretch um up they can reveal more than expected. I have seen two mums on school run short top and leggings could see her underwear. I didn't have a heart to tell them, they came across a bit rough, I didn't want any trouble lol.

I remember my sis wearing leggisn with long tshirts and jumpers early 90s looked cool, still didn't temp me to wear it.

deakymom Fri 21-Feb-14 23:34:44

well im okay with it if you have the figure go ahead if not please dont wear overtight panties with see through leggings and a crop top then glare at me when i say oh dear lord (unfortunately loudly) i have sleep deprivation some mornings and my mouth works on its own! seriously though we have a lass whose child goes to the same school as mine she wears leggings no panties and a short top fine even after three kids she has a great figure but why does she not wax first? i really didn't want to see her short and curlies (ever) she walked by me in a toddler group leant around me to get to something and practically stuffed herself in my face i turned away and the lady next to me commented that poor child can't afford panties or a razor! we spent ten minutes giggling like school kids!! apparently lack of sleep affects more people than i thought grin

wol1968 Fri 21-Feb-14 23:38:26

It is if you're going topless as well. grin Although I think it's a look DH would like to see more of - in the bedroom.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

CalamityKate Fri 21-Feb-14 23:41:41

I still mourn the discontinuation of M&S leggings.

They were thick enough to completely hide pants. They had a lovely wide waistband. They were very stretchy. They never bagged at the knees, or slid down, or went out of shape even after being washed hundreds of times. I used to ride in mine and they just stayed in place, and in shape.

They were £18 (quite dear considering I'm going back at least 15 years) and they were worth every penny.

And then of course they changed suppliers or whatever and the replacements were nowhere near as good. I've never found any to rival them sad

WandaDoff Fri 21-Feb-14 23:47:31

ZOMBIE thread.

I wear Jeggings (the ones that look like jeans painted on) with tope that don't cover my arse. I have a nice arse and I look good in them. You can't see the outline of my 'foof'.

They aren't see through so I guess that's what most people find offensive?
I wouldn't want to wear trousers that you could see my underwear through.

I did wear a pair of skin tight, shiny/latex looking leggings with a top that didn't cover my arse to a birthday bash not so long ago, They again were not see through in the slightest, and were very tight. Nothing was wobbling, and no 'foof' was on show.

YANBU to think leggings on their own are ridiculous. You can think whatever the hell you want.

Haha! Just noticed this is a zombie thread.

shemademegay you revived this zombie thread because you were offended by it.

I am offended by the fact that you use too many exclamation marks >> !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's fucking annoying. Oh, and you don't need to star out your swear words either, we're all adults here, we've all heard the words before.

Typo in my first post, whoops, blush

*with tops that don't cover my arse.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS Sat 22-Feb-14 00:01:45

Yanbu. It is a really bad look. Always.

They are comfortable, there have been days in this cold wet miserable winter when I really couldnt give a fuck if some nosey cow was offended by my VPL.

Normally I keep leggings for the house and long tops, but my backs been playing me up and I have the hump and don't care!

There was a woman today in leggings and a leather jacket.
She looked 'okay' until she bent down them OMG , they were stretched to see through.
I could practically see her knicker label on her pants.

For the love of Jeff ladies. Look in the fecking mirror hmm

Zombie Thread <<sigh>>

Ok for little girls in the pre 'hip-rounding' stage not for anyone else

And still they carry on! "Ok for little girls in the pre 'hip-rounding' stage not for anyone else Yanbu" "It is a really bad look. Always" "well im okay with it if you have the figure go ahead"

my point is any clothes are ok for anyone! if it makes them happy then they can do it! as for people complaining about see through leggings, this was not my original's just common sense to wear clothes that are your size and buy new when they get too old. but still surely seeing someones knickers is still not as offensive or mean as having a go at people for looking a certain way? so, in conclusion this still makes the person who hasn't gotten round to buying new leggings yet the better person.

The end.

needaholidaynow Sat 22-Feb-14 00:34:00

Some people can actually get away with it and look really nice. Tshirt, leggings, converse: sorted smile

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS Sat 22-Feb-14 00:35:54

Leggings need no body fat. If you fit that then great. Otherwise you are going to be showing your beef curtains to anyone who cares to look.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS Sat 22-Feb-14 00:36:40

*Leggings with a top above the waist

ZingSweetMango Sat 22-Feb-14 01:11:21

I was expecting Cliffy though!wink

FlockOfTwats Sat 22-Feb-14 01:18:22

I think it's fucking disgustnig to humiliate people by taking pictures of their behind, no matter what they're wearing. Shame on you for condoning that behaviour.

Would it be ok to take pictures of a womans privates while she sleeps? Because there is very little difference. She obviously did not know she was displaying so much.

That picture makes me cringe every time I see it not because of her leggings or visible underwear but because this oblivious female (whose age we don't know) has no idea her personal space has been violated and spread all over the web. Oh and yes I know it's a zombie thread but that same picture was posted on a similar thread earlier this week. I'm fat, I wear leggings with my tunics and do so while not giving one iota of fuck. It's my body. I'll dress as I please. If my dress sense offends then don't worry I'll be outta sight in a second or two. Just... y'know? Deal with it. <dabs wet finger on my sizzlin' ass>

ahlahktuhflomp Sat 22-Feb-14 05:34:11

Picture is on an escalator. If it is public enough to be in a stranger's face, it is public enough to be caught on camera without wrongness.

MadIsTheNewNormal Sat 22-Feb-14 05:46:11

YANBU. Some women take complete leave of their senses where leggings are concerned. I feel embarrassed on their behalf.

Hotmad Sat 22-Feb-14 06:12:51
georgesdino Sat 22-Feb-14 07:59:10

Im 30 but have a teen/celeb skinny legs, and I adore leggings. There are loads of thick ones you can buy, and I really love them.

brettgirl2 Sat 22-Feb-14 08:01:50

Yanbu leggings as trousers only for under 10s imo.

justtoomessy Sat 22-Feb-14 08:43:50

Ooh I had some lovely leggings in the 80's but always wore with a dress. I wouldn't wear them now as I am far too fat and dimply plus they are so thin.

I do think people can wear what they like however, I do wonder why there friends/relatives don't say that their pants are on show!

RedFocus Sat 22-Feb-14 09:15:41

The ones that look like leotards are hilarious! I am forever hoping they don't bend over because the seams don't look strong enough grin

trixymalixy Sat 22-Feb-14 09:21:31

I was walking behind someone whose leggings were so thin I could practically read the label on her thong. Not a good look.

ThePinkOcelot Sat 22-Feb-14 09:22:00

I followed a really large girl into the drs the other day and I mean really large. She was wearing leggings and a short jacket. Not a pretty sight.I can tell you.

However, I think a nice slim person can get away with it.

WitchWay Sat 22-Feb-14 09:42:57

Agree a slim person can get away with it but leggings with a short top looks to me as if they have forgotten to put on a skirt. I like them with mid-thigh length tunics / jumpers

theimposter Sun 23-Feb-14 11:15:03

DSD wears two pairs over each other to stop see through issues!

fedupandfifty Sun 23-Feb-14 14:03:25

I love leggings. I always wear them, be they jeans-like or otherwise. Never nude, though! I think if you adhere to the general rule of loose/ unstructured/ long top for anything other than working out you'll be fine.

No holes, visible knickers/ sanitary wear though!

VoyageDeVerity Sun 23-Feb-14 14:17:50

The young girls I see here wearing the leggings and crop top look are very beautiful and look amazing actually. I like the look it's new and fresh and really comfortable. I think the dress over leggin look is completely passe but each to their own I suppose.

I think this thread is really horrible - posters feeling sick from looking at other women in clothes they don't like....that is so extreme. You need to check yourselves.

Imnotmadeofeyes Sun 23-Feb-14 14:46:35

I like leggings, what I don't like is a face full of someone else's underwear be it through cheap leggings or belts buckled round thighs.

I don't care it's something probably socially conditioned in me, I find it uncomfortable and frankly pervy, there's something 'flashery' about it imho.

Those who don't mind flashing their keks in public won't give a shit about being judged and those who do probably appreciate the heads up.... So I don't really see the problem with threads like this tbh.

If you fall into the catagory of knowing exactly what you're displaying but your still offended, may I kindly suggest that you stop forcing yourself to wear clothes that send a message out to society that you don't particularly like.

Weathergames Sun 23-Feb-14 14:51:28

Surely they don't realise others can clearly see their underwear?

I have always thought it's a bit of the case of "Emporers New Clothes"?

I just get extra stretchy leggings and pull them right up over my boobs grin (much easier these days since my nipples are round about my where my waist would be if I had one!
I do need to put shoes on though or my feet get cold...

kelper Sun 23-Feb-14 15:14:43

Lol this thread made me put a black jersey skirt on over my leggings this morning before I went to tesco, I had been wearing them with a big plaid shirt and long sleeved top ;)

takingthathometomomma Sun 23-Feb-14 15:17:14

Leggings and skirts/dresses are as bad as leggings with short tops IMO. It just looks wrong! Leggings with long tops and jumpers is what's "right"! (Knee length is too long...)

forbreakfast Sun 23-Feb-14 15:17:24

If wearing with crop, or short, tops they look like they're going to dance class (in the 80s).

Otherwise, don't care. Long tops, tunics and all other combinations I wouldn't bat an eyelid at.

harriet247 Sun 23-Feb-14 15:18:22

Always leggings on their own here!i wear them everyday, have a massive assortment, jeggings, patterned etc, i do think you have to have a good arse shape, not necessarily a size 8 ( i am) ive seen girls who are around a 14 looking so gorgeous showing off toned bums in them too

forbreakfast Sun 23-Feb-14 15:20:49

In fact DC does wear the short top/leggings combo for one of her dance classes now. Not outside of dance class, however.

Fakebook Sun 23-Feb-14 15:21:54

Yanbu. Sometimes when we're walking behind someone dressed like this dd laughs as each bum cheek goes up and down. Not a good look!

girliefriend Sun 23-Feb-14 15:27:25

YANBU when I drive to work I drive past the local 6th form and often pull a 'face' at what the girls are wearing, bearing in mind its febuary, the look seems to be black see through leggings, a crop top, thin jacket and canvas shoes. How they don't freeze to death is beyond me!!

I normally turn to my 8yo dd and say very firmly - you will never be allowed out looking like that grin

Technotropic Sun 23-Feb-14 15:35:45

My daughters and I have had many lols due to this fashion fad. Long may it continue as it definitely brightens up a dull trip to the supermarket.

2tiredtocare Sun 23-Feb-14 15:36:58

Marks and Spencer's do leggings that arent see through, the Primark one's are awful, i'm guessing people dont realise their bum is showing as no one tells them

specialsubject Sun 23-Feb-14 15:44:35

looked good on one of the ice skaters at Sochi, but skaters always have wonderful long muscled legs.

real people shouldn't dress like this!

2tiredtocare Sun 23-Feb-14 15:48:11

Are ice skaters not real then grin

HoratiaDrelincourt Sun 23-Feb-14 15:52:28

The glossy magazines show great "short top and leggings" outfits which only work because of the cost and quality of the displayed garments, the natural figure of the model, and the photographer's tricks (lighting, angles, editing, etc).

And they don't translate to Primark copies.

Creamycoolerwithcream Sun 23-Feb-14 16:50:49

I love my leggings now and when I first wore them 25 years ago. I have never worn a skirt over them, I'd feel all bloated like I have too many clothes on. I'm not super slim but love my bum.

forbreakfast Sun 23-Feb-14 18:01:41

I don't care how toned, or not, the bum is. I really don't want to see it, thank you.

Hotmad Sun 23-Feb-14 18:14:41

Wow I never knew leggings could gather such a debate!

You know, if you don't want to see something, you do this thing with your neck, called turning, it moves your head so you can look away.

forbreakfast Tue 25-Feb-14 01:17:24

What good advice HighlanderMam...

ZingSweetMango Tue 25-Feb-14 03:35:40

true, but if you see something by accident, you know, involuntarily sadly you can't unsee it.

the damage is done. and what's worse, I feel sorry for the person who makes themselves look ridiculous.
there's an excellent invention called a mirror.
it's been around for centuries.

Sometimesbrunette Tue 25-Feb-14 08:18:33

Depends on the thickness of the material and quality. Plus how it looks on the individual. YABU

The damage is done? Come on now and stop being so melodramatic. There is no damage done from seeing the likes of the woman in that link with her thong and panty liner on show.

At best you feel sorry for her or think wtf? At worst you mock her and take a pic to post online.

I'm sure an unwanted glimpse is easy to 'get over'. I think people look silly in lots of clothes, whatever, I'm not wearing them. Don't give a shit.

Quoteunquote Tue 25-Feb-14 09:06:23

None of you are climbers then,

leggings are brilliant to wear under a harness.

stridence Tue 25-Feb-14 17:42:50

Leggings are the most uninspired tat to have ever been invented.

shemademegay Wed 26-Feb-14 01:22:10

hahaha...I can't believe I come back 2/3 days later and women are still being obnoxious A-holes about what other people choose to wear! this is classic. @forbreakfast, why on earth does looking at an arse offend you? this makes me sad....I don't like to say this but it is true, some people are gifted with more beautiful faces than others, some of these "others" are not that gifted at all! but wait, does this mean that they aren't allowed out in the street!?? especially not wearing a hat or shades! or do people think that only really attractive people should wear hats now as "they just draw my attention to their face, i don't wanna see that while I'm shopping"

last chance. ANYONE CAN WEAR WHAT THE SHAG THEY WANT!! if you really for some bizarre reason can't handle looking then it's you that should maybe stay inside and watch programmes only featuring very good looking people in baggy jeans and long tops that cover their bums and a thick jumper to be as unsexy as can be.

Again. sorry and well done to anyone sticking up for people who want to wear items of clothing they like. rant was not for you!

sylmel Wed 05-Mar-14 14:33:55

Leggings are the ugliest item of clothing a woman can wear. They are unflattering and vulgar. Since when has it become the trend for women to out with tights only that is not wearing a skirt or a dress? Let's face it leggings are just thick tights and nothing else. To add insult to injury is when a fat or very fat woman wears them or an old woman. They are completely demeaning and disgusting.

whiteblossom Wed 05-Mar-14 15:57:03

I was walking behind a mum just yesterday and she was wearing leggings and a short top...but the legging were see through, I could see her knickers in detail, every roll of fat and even her cellulite for gods sake. She was a size 16-18. why oh why. She would have had more coverage from tights.

Not the first that I have seen. I think people think leggings are easy and comfy to wear...but not everyone can wear them. I can't.

AngelaDaviesHair Wed 05-Mar-14 16:19:23

Shock horror! Woman with chubby thighs wears leggings - it's not exactly the bombing of Aleppo/massive financial fraud perpetrated by the banks, is it?

Very true, and very funny.

I'm ambivalent: I know what people mean about it not looking good, and being presented with a good view of people's exact genital contours and underwear is not always pleasant, but isn't it better for people to just feel free to follow the fashions they want? Chicness is a tyranny.

I admire anyone who just does what they want clothes-wise. I'm so crippled by appearance anxiety it takes me ages to sum up the courage to leave the house most days.

You are allowed to have an opinion about the way someone looks. Yes, leggings worn as trousers look stupid on most people. Especially with Ugg knock-offs.

honeybunny14 Wed 05-Mar-14 17:44:20

Depends if you can carry them off worn like that.
