QueefLatina Sun 30-Sep-12 00:26:44

sausagesandwich34 Sun 30-Sep-12 00:30:17

so far soo good but my god I haven't stopped eating this evening

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCatsAgain Sun 30-Sep-12 00:34:18

Whwt is stobtopee??

WorraLiberty Sun 30-Sep-12 00:45:14

I used to smoke 30+ per day and I was the last person in the world I thought could actually give up.

I'd get to day 3 and burst into tears/want to kick small fluffy kittens.

But I managed to cut down drastically and then eventually give up totally by using This E-Cigarette

The best thing about it was that I could smoke 'normal' fags as well so I didn't feel as though I was depriving myself.

Whilst nicotine replacement is not advised if you can give up without it, it's certainly better than reaching for a real fag if you feel you have to have that nicotine hit.

Good luck OP.

KellyElly Sun 30-Sep-12 08:19:42

Thanks Worra was thinking about the efag. Whore, Queen and Sausages let's support each other. I really need to do this. I really enjoy smoking but I'm 34 and its time to kick the habit for me and my DD. I want to give up while she's still little before she knows what smoking is.

Dawndonna Sun 30-Sep-12 09:24:10

I'm 53. I gave up in January this year. I had tried numerous times. It wasn't easy, but I managed it, although I am now back at slimming world trying to lose the weight I gained. The e-cig is the way to go. I went cold turkey, no fags, straight on to e-cig. I found it brilliant.
Good Luck to all of you trying!

Mrsjay Sun 30-Sep-12 09:33:28

I was going to sign up but the advert said 'England only' I got a bit confused

WanderingWhistle Sun 30-Sep-12 09:44:27

Me, I'm doing it. Never felt more determined.
Good luck all stopptoberts xx

ScabbyHorse Sun 30-Sep-12 09:47:04

I'm in!

CatWantsPeopleFood Sun 30-Sep-12 09:51:12

I was going to do this but I actually started on Sept 16th, so I'm on day 14 already smile

KellyElly Sun 30-Sep-12 10:05:02

Cat well done. Did you just go cold turkey?

MrsJay surely it can be just england? Thought it was the whole of the UK.

We'll should all come back on this thread if we feel tempted to give in and talk each other out of it smile

ModernToss Sun 30-Sep-12 10:07:57

I'm planning on stopping on Halloween - I don't live in the UK, and Halloween this year is the 25th anniversary of when I stopped drinking. I reckon I should be able to give up my other addiction 25 years down the line!

Will be watching this thread with interest as I start to psych myself up.

KellyElly Sun 30-Sep-12 10:09:58

Good luck Modern. I'm sure you will do it as you have already more than proved your willpower smile

I'm in but I'm a bit scared iykwim. Got to do it this time.

KellyElly Sun 30-Sep-12 10:36:07

I know exactly what you mean TheOne.

WorraLiberty Sun 30-Sep-12 10:36:55

I must admit I haven't been out of bed long but seeing the words...

Whore, Queen and Sausages let's support each other

Just made me spurt hot coffee out of my nose! grin

TrinityRhino Sun 30-Sep-12 10:53:18

I won't butt in (get it grin) anymore but O have stopped smoking indoors, day 4 now. Means a huge reduction in amount.

3 months since I stopped drinking.

Good luck everyone smile

KellyElly Sun 30-Sep-12 11:36:46

CatWantsPeopleFood Sun 30-Sep-12 13:10:22

No I didn't go cold turkey, I'm using NRT- at the moment its just the NiQuitin mini lozenges but I did have patches too for the first few days, until I kept forgetting to put them on! Also I started giving up early on in august with Champix. I had to stop taking them because they made me feel ill, but although I never got to the point of quitting with them, I had cut down quite a bit.

QueefLatina Sun 30-Sep-12 18:35:11

On day 2 now. I have eaten so much I feel sick!

I have a mild feeling that things aren't as good as they usually are and then I remember and want to howl in anguish before the feeling passes and I'm back to the 'not feeling quite right' again.

Difficult to describe!

Good luck quitters!

QueefLatina Sun 30-Sep-12 18:36:28

Going cold turkey btw but with great help from apple and plum cobbler with custard.

relaxingathome Sun 30-Sep-12 18:38:30

I am starting a week late, I know excuses, but I turn 40 next week am having a big party and dont want to be fighting cravings, I will be starting on the 9th, planning on stopping drinking til xmas as well smile

mumsknots Sun 30-Sep-12 18:53:42

Me too, trying yet again to give the bloody things up!

In the last 5 years I've given up twice for a year at a time but stupidly convinced myself that I could have the occasional one and before I knew it I was back up to 10 a day.

I'm dreading the initial light-headed, nauseous, irritable, mood swinging being I become but once I'm over the 2wk mark it gets easier.

Good luck everyone!

sausagesandwich34 Sun 30-Sep-12 18:55:59

well I've now gone since 9pm on friday

massive PMS type symptoms but I've saved £8!

OldGreyWiffleTest Sun 30-Sep-12 18:57:34

Nope OP.

ScienceOfSellingYouselfShort Sun 30-Sep-12 18:58:31

I'm doing it too (along with DP) but started today. I bought myself an e-cig earlier, knew my first big 'test' would be after dinner but I used it and I'm fine!

Day one nearly over! Sending good luck to everyone who takes part. I shall be avoiding the wine for the first few weeks!

McHappyPants2012 Sun 30-Sep-12 18:58:37

I am behind you all 100% I know how hard it is.

Vagabond Sun 30-Sep-12 19:00:14

Count me in too. Am smoking like a fiend tonight though. Tomorrow shall be the start of a new era. No more freezing on my porch for a start. And happier family members.

Chundle Sun 30-Sep-12 19:09:57

I still haven't got my stoptober kit I applied for!! I do have an ecig though and a nicotine inhaler which I find are good. I find paches rubbish. Am desperate to quit

I haven't got the kit either. Dh is doing it too and for the last couple of weeks we've stopped the first one of the morning so I know the craving won't hit first thing.

Good luck everyone. smile

KateSpade Sun 30-Sep-12 21:00:24

I am planning on doing it, or at least cutting down as much as i can, to save money if anything else.

Worra I had one of those E-lights, but it leaked all over and smelt foul, so that went straight away in a drawer! My aim is to get another one, and start by alternating between fag & E-cig.

WorraLiberty Sun 30-Sep-12 21:31:42

Ohh I hadn't considered the filters leaking?! shock

But the alternating definitely worked for me.

KellyElly Sun 30-Sep-12 21:38:05

I didn't get my kit either and the website has not been working properly when I've tried to use it! Good luck to everyone for tomorrow. Just smoked my last one and ripped the ones left in the packet up so there's no temptation tomorrow morning smile

Skellig Sun 30-Sep-12 23:42:05

I used the Alan Carr Easyway book to stop and it was fantastic. DH also used this method; he was on 40 a day and just stopped cold and never went back.

Good luck everyone - you can do it! smile

Jux Mon 01-Oct-12 00:34:07

My brother turned up one Xmas with an efag - he was the most determined smoker you could hope to meet. That was Xmas 2008 or maybe 2007. Come February he had finished the pack of 20 he had had when the efag arrived. He never smoked another cigarette.

KellyElly Mon 01-Oct-12 10:25:23

Started cold turkey today. It's ok, you can ride the cravings but I have got a headache and feel a bit emotional and would die for a fag right now. Not going to break though!

Well done KellyElly. I tried cold turkey and got really emotional too. I just felt so sorry for myself and wanted to cry.

Just think though, this time tomorrow you'll have done more than 24hrs!! How cool is that. You'll be even more determined then because you'll have proved to yourself you can go all day without one.

Keep it up. You're doing great!!

PutABellOnMe Mon 01-Oct-12 12:35:35

I went cold turkey last October after trying to cut down several times, first three days were awful but I managed to keep off of them. Now I haven't smoked in a year and it was absolutely the best decision I ever made. Good luck!

WanderingWhistle Mon 01-Oct-12 12:41:16

kelly would die for a fag?? Rather appropriate choice of words, hehe.

I had my last at 7am this morning.
I have been chewing the gum all morning and it's making it way easier.
I've not felt weird once.

I did get a image of a fag in my mind .. and thought ah! This is my addiction trying to dupe me!
So I had a gum.

My getting in the car fag will be missed though.

Well done everyone!!!!

WanderingWhistle Mon 01-Oct-12 12:42:53

One thing .. do I get a E-Cig?
I think my main thing is the habit of having it in my hand. Which the E-Cig will perpetuate.

Not sure.
Any opinions?

You could get one but not open it. I know someone who bought one just in case. She never needed it but felt better knowing it was there.

When she felt more secure she passed it on to someone else who was quitting.

SinisterBuggyMonth Mon 01-Oct-12 13:17:06

I stopped years ago but considering the huge fucking barage of stress I'm under today I might actually make it StartOber instead

KellyElly Mon 01-Oct-12 14:06:46

grin Sinister

How did everyone get on today?

I've found it not too bad but I did have a couple of really bad 1/2 hrs.

KellyElly Mon 01-Oct-12 19:57:05

Me too. Its been quite hard. I've been a bit moody as well smile

Good morning everyone. I just wanted to say good luck for day 2.

Dh and I managed to get through the evening without killing each other but it was a close one. We were being really polite to each other but I know I was feeling very irritable. It took a lot to hold my tongue.

KellyElly Tue 02-Oct-12 18:35:49

I have been near to cracking so went to the docs to get some help. I tried the mouth spray and was sick in the sink at the doctors surgery lol. I wouldn't recommend that. I've got the inhalers so going to try them. If they don't suit me I'm going to try champix (I think its called). Good luck to everyone. Hope u are all doing better than me smile

Good luck for day three.

Kelly I think we're doing really well. I've never heard of champix so I don't know what it does. I used a throat spray last time but it gave me severe and painful hiccups. I have an e-cig this time and it's brilliant.

QueefLatina Wed 03-Oct-12 15:23:28

I was struggling so I read Allen Carr's how to stop smoking book. I'm looking at quitting from a different perspective now.

I really understood where he was coming from and there were some real revelations, like that smokers smoke to achieve the state of relaxation/confidence whatever that non smokers feel all the time! Fags don't make you feel better, their absence makes you feel worse so you have to smoke to make you feel normal again!

It probably seems obvious to everyone else but me! I had led myself to believe that non smokers were missing out. What a twat I am/was!

I don't feel deprived now

Anyway. Nice one you lot. Stay smug! grin

KellyElly Thu 04-Oct-12 15:28:59

How's everyone doing smile

I'm doing well and so is dh. How about you? How is the inhaler?

DogsCock Thu 04-Oct-12 17:01:21

Am on day 4, found it a bit difficult, but walked the dogs twice and did loads of gardening. Chewing nicotine gum. Have an e cig on charge, but not needed it yet.

I honestly don't think I'd have made it this far without mine. The really stupid thing is that I gave up with every pregnancy (3), cold turkey and no cravings. I know I can do it.

DogsCock Thu 04-Oct-12 17:14:43

I have my e cig as a last resort. It is for when I am about to go straight back on the fags, like a safety net. Before that I have gum, then lozenges (slightly stronger than the gum).

Weirdly I also keep real fags. This is because I know if it came down to it I could have one and feel safer in that knowledge, whereas others need to have got rid.

My mind is also focussed at present on Stoptober ONLY. The thought of never ever having a cig is too much for me, but when I get to the end of the month I hope to then take each day one step at a time. I managed 7 months off the fags recently, so I can do it.

LesleyPumpshaft Thu 04-Oct-12 17:57:08

Has anyone tried Zyban or Champix, or are you trying it now?

WanderingWhistle Thu 04-Oct-12 17:58:29

I feel really deprived, like I've given up my head or something!

DogsCock Thu 04-Oct-12 18:00:29

I did zyban in the past. It worked as in I really didn't want to smoke but it set me off in itchy hives, so that was that.

People on champix whom I know say it is very good.

LesleyPumpshaft Thu 04-Oct-12 18:03:46

Thanks DogsCock I've missed the start date for Stoptober, as I could only get an appointment with the smoking nurse tomorrow. Attempts to quit with nrt and going cold turkey have failed miserably.

I'm not sure if I would be suitable for Champix or Zyban for me as I have one kidney. If not, I will probably pay for hypnosis.

DogsCock Thu 04-Oct-12 18:07:43

I feel your pain. It is a total nightmare this first bit. Then comes the day when you start not to think about it and realise you have done x amount of hours without even realising. That is a good feeling.

QueefLatina Thu 04-Oct-12 18:53:07

Try Allen Carr's 'easyway to stop smoking'. I'm not the only one on this thread to recommend it.

I have not smoked for a few days now and usually I would be feeling very deprived and sorry for myself. I'd be looking for an excuse to have just one!

Not this time, I feel fine so far, no idea how it works though!

I never go my stoptober pack either.

Keep going everyone!

My stoptober pack arrived today but I've not had the chance to look at it yet.

KellyElly Thu 04-Oct-12 19:07:15

Doing quite well. The inhailor is really working for me.

Itsnotahoover Thu 04-Oct-12 19:08:40

I decided to do this, but have given in a few times this week blush However I've only smoked 10 since Sunday as oppose to 20 a day, so I'm proud of myself! I've been using an ecig and gum and I'm finding it easy at work, but its that one in the morning and last one at night that I'm struggling with!

LesleyPumpshaft Thu 04-Oct-12 19:13:58

What are the ecigs like? Been thinking of getting them, but have no idea about which brands are the best.

DogsCock Thu 04-Oct-12 19:14:25

ItsNotaHoover - 10 over the week is pretty good going compared to 20 per day.

Anyone tried that mouth spray? Fucking hell it is vile. A mate of mine gave me a squirt. I was gagging.

Glad it's working Kelly. smile

Great improvement Itsnotahoover. They're the ones that get me too. Try putting the morning one off by 5 extra minutes every day and bringing the last one earlier. It does work.

DogsCock I couldn't stand the spray as it gave me the most painful and violent hiccups.

Lesley the ecig works for me. Especially as I would never use it in public because I feel like an idiot.

DogsCock Thu 04-Oct-12 19:21:53

I thnk my ecig was from somewhere like or something like that. Bought it over a year ago and have used it on and off. Probably not the best oneon the market as sometimes one gets a big puff with it hitting the right areas and other times a puff with nothing to it.

Which would others recommend and I might treat myself to a new one.

DogsCock Thu 04-Oct-12 19:22:23

I want one which hits the back of the throat and emits a nice big plume of 'smoke'

LesleyPumpshaft Thu 04-Oct-12 19:31:20

Thanks smile, I'm looking for one that hits the back of the throat too. My fella siad he had one, but I won't be falling for that one again. angry

But, anyway, one that comes as close as possible to a real life smokey cigarette.

doinmummy Thu 04-Oct-12 19:33:36

I gave up10 weeks ago . I started with Champix but decided to go cold turkey. I found the most important thing has been my mindset . I still want a fag but really really tell myself off " don't be ridiculous you DO NOT smoke so why would you want a fag?" good luck everyone x

Well done doinmummy. smile

My ecig is called Ten Motives. It's from tesco. It does hit the back of your throat, especially the first pull and it has good smoke too. It's not rechargeable and costs about £6.

DogsCock Thu 04-Oct-12 19:52:58

lesley - pmsl at your fella

TheOne - how many puffs do you get from the ten motives one. i.e how often are you buying a new one?

Itsnotahoover Thu 04-Oct-12 20:00:19

I've been buying the disposable ones as well as I find they consistently give me that "throat hit" whereas the £25 rechargeable one I bought was crap!

LesleyPumpshaft Thu 04-Oct-12 20:01:57

I tried a ten motives one and was unimpressed.

Don't know how many hits. I'm still on my first and I was a 15 a day kind of person. I don't use it as often as I smoked though.

KellyElly Fri 05-Oct-12 15:27:55

Went to the stop smoking clinic today and my carbon monoxide level is now at one smile

I don't know what that means but I'm assuming its good. Well done Kelly and everyone who's been trying this week. smile

WorraLiberty Fri 05-Oct-12 17:24:38

Just checking in to see how the whores, queens and sausages are doing grin

Well done kelly that's brilliant!

Don't know about the whores, queens and sausages but I'm on day 5 yay! grin

WorraLiberty Fri 05-Oct-12 17:54:24

Well done Hairy one, keep it up! grin

QueefLatina Fri 05-Oct-12 18:31:13

Hanging in there too!

Keep going everyone smile

KellyElly Fri 05-Oct-12 19:53:15

Thanks smile LOL where are whore and sausage??? Keep going everyone we are doing well. Now I need to stop replacing cigarettes with packets of Monster Munch that belong to my DD smile x

LesleyPumpshaft Fri 05-Oct-12 21:49:21

I bought a big bag of chuppa chups lollies. Got Zyban, gum and patches. The Zyban hasn't made me go psycho as scaremongering articles suggest, quite the opposite. smile

I'll probably have no teeth left come November though. blush

QueefLatina Sat 06-Oct-12 10:19:25

Went out for a drink last night and DID NOT SMOKE!

Had one massive craving and felt v irritable for a few minutes but that was it. I just kept saying to myself 'how great is it that I don't have to keep breaking off conversation with DH to go and stand on my own outside in the cold?'

Hope everyone's feeling strong today smile

That's brilliant Queef. Well done. smile

I went out last night and I did have two. blush I'm really cross with myself today though as I feel like all my effort was undone and I'm back at the beginning. sad

KellyElly Sat 06-Oct-12 16:33:03

Don't worry TheOne just start again. I cracked this morning and nicked a fag off my friend not because I was desperate for one but because I've been constipated since I gave up - always happens to me is that weird? Anyway it did the trick and I'm back on the inhaler again.

grin I get constipated too. I'm back in the right place now but I'm out again tonight.

Nights out are like buses. You wait for ages and then two come along at once. smile

KellyElly Sat 06-Oct-12 18:32:01

I know people who've given up who still have a fag when they go out. As long as it doesn't slip back into a habit what's the harm. I'll prob be the same when I go out. I'm a lone parent and have only been out twice this year so even if I do smoke when I go out it will probably equate to about ten a year which I can live with smile

LesleyPumpshaft Sun 07-Oct-12 09:50:21

Just wondering if anyone has tried Zyban before and if it gave them a 'speedy' effect. Despite having bugger all sleep because of a nasty cough (still getting over chest infection), my eyes feel as though they are about to pop out of my head and I can't sit still. I've got lots of cleaning done though!

I don't know about zyban sorry.

Well I feel better today. I think after smoking 15 a day for 15yrs it was always going to be a hard ask to be fine on a night out after only 5 days of stopping so I've decided not to beat myself up over it.

I actually feel fine today. No bad cravings but I'm glad I'm not going out again for a couple of months.

QueefLatina Sun 07-Oct-12 11:36:39

Even though you had a couple of fags the other night, smoking is probably starting to feel like less of a habit to you now so you could go back to not smoking again. It would still be so easy to think 'oh well, I've ruined it now' and light up but you got straight back on the wagon. I'm pleased for you.

Hope all you quitters are still hanging in there!

KellyElly Sun 07-Oct-12 11:52:28

Lesley How long have you been on it? It works in the same was as an antidepressent and they make you feel like this for the first month until your body gets used to them. If it carries on just see your doc.

Thank you for the support everyone.

It's hard because no one in rl knows about my habit. Just dh and two non smoking friends. It's been great to have people to talk about this with.

Keep going everyone. smile

QueefLatina Mon 08-Oct-12 23:31:01

Another day done and I had my first smoking dream last night.

Allen Carr's book has helped massively to make this experience more positive, I really recommend it.

Keep going you lot!

QueefLatina Wed 10-Oct-12 14:37:07

Is there anybody out there?!

KellyElly Wed 10-Oct-12 17:04:16

I am smile I might need that book. Have had two slip ups. One was because I was drinking. Think its probably best to avoid alcohol for a while!

QueefLatina Fri 12-Oct-12 22:34:31

I had a bit of an argument with DH today. The urge to smoke was IMMENSE!

I didn't smoke though thankfully, as I would feel shit for arguing and feel shit for smoking on top!

I hope there are some others still hanging in there. Good luck esp to those on a night out x

Onken Sun 14-Oct-12 11:36:17

I am still going without. we are on day 14 now people. Half way there for Stoptober. We can do it. And hopefullly continue on afterwards.
