Stupid fucking tax credits

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I renewed my claim. Was amazed to find that was entitled to tax credits based on last year's income (WTF? one full time worker, one part time, minimal childcare costs, is the govt mad?) Anyway, told them of drop on nursery costs from £150+ to £80pw. Have they changed it? Have they fuck. So I'm now on hold again whilst trying to answer emails at work and not be completely useless, have been on hold for 15 mins and counting, to tell them they are overpaying me! Why isn't there an online option to update your details? If they gave everyone a password and you could go in and change working hours, childcare etc, it would be no different to doing it on the phone and surely would cut down a lot of person hours answering phones.

Stupid damn system.

Dreadful system.

They continue to pay the higher childcare for 5 weeks after the change iirc. They even do this if childcare reduces to 0.

I had the same problem last year when I went on mat leave.

Ok it's even madder - they 'run on' childcare costs for 4 weeks so although costs went down at the start of June we get extra til 5th July. WTF is this system about? Chucking money at those who need it, but last year when I stopped getting maternity pay they stopped my WTC.......fucking mad.

I have been keeping recotds of dates of phone calls etc because I'm sure they will try to sting me with an overpayment claim next April!

Well, according to reports, you may no longer be bothered by TC at all, depending on your income.

I meant chucking money at those who don't need it

with the new 10k tax band I think we'd be about £1k a year better off so it would be ok if they cut TCs for us actually.

Altinkum - I'm not trying to scaremonger, and I'm sorry if you thought that. I was reflecting on what has been reported about the Budget in the newspapers. I personally feel it would be a mistake for the government to remove CTC overnight (and have said as much in another thread).

!!! It would be piss easy to commit fraud either way, and if they had fewer people on the phones they could do more random testing to catch fraudsters, which would also deter people from committing fraud.

Fair enough, Altinkum. You are probably right that it is scaremongering as a means to manage fears/expectations. People are made to fear total loss of CTC, but (as I suggested in my post in the other thread), I think it is more likely (though I wait to be corrected on Tuesday), that the government will phase them out over the course of the parliament to allow people to adjust their finances, etc. Sudden, overnight removal would be catastrophic, and I cannot believe that any government - however gung-ho - would do this. I think that these leaks to the press are simply a way of preparing the public to accept that - within 5 years - they will receive no state "handouts", unless they are on IS, etc.
