Increase in domestic violence?
Over stretching of the ambulance / emergency services?
Most of all, it's FOOTBALL!

Couldn't agree more... All the money pumped into it could be diverted into the various economies of the countries concerned. I reaise (before anyone leaps in) that the state doesn't pay for attendance but the FA could make a donation to the Treasury

YABVU!

The majority of people use this as an opportunity to get together with friends and family and have a lovely time.

I have a real issue with linking domestic violence with a football tournament. Watching football does not make people violent!
It is possible to watch football and not drink and it would seem to me it is more likely that drink and drugs are behind the increase in domestic violence. I appreciate that people might drink more when watching football but it isn't compulsory.

If you don't like it go and use shops, cinemas, restaurants etc. that will be empty and leave the rest of us to have a nice time too - everyone is happy!

that's true, I am planning to shop etc while it's on!

Yes, I do know IABU and football does not make DV happen in itself. I just can't stand the game, and it seems to be dominating everythign at the moment.
It'll be fairly good for the economy too I imagine.

go on then...COME ON ENGLAND

great more football bashing threads containing obviously well thought out and reasoned arguments which are quickly abandoned as soon as they are questioned and simply replaced with "I just hate football/ why can't it be more like rugby" etc.

every football tournament should be cancelled then....cos the dv increase isnt exclusive to wc....how about the others?

fryalot · 10/06/2010 09:49

well the FA cup is every year, but the world cup lasts for a month once every four years.

so, that's 12 x 4 - 1 months that there isn't a world cup

Twenty-two (or however many it is) grown men with nothing better to do than run around a field after a ball. However many million more with nothing better to do than watch them.

I don't like lots of stuff either though, I simply choose not to watch it. I don't sit around moaning that they're over-paid and it's boring though, I just don't watch it and good-luck to everyone else who does want to watch it.
The DV and hospital argument argument is a nonsense though, on that basis you'd ban/complain about christmas on an equal level.
If you don't like don't watch, simples.

tbh I'm rather glad it's all football and big brother this summer as I have a massive dissertation to do and I won't be tempted by the television

Is DV really linked to football? Who says? Maybe there should just be a ban on supermarkets selling cans of beer for 50p. That might help?

"Twenty-two (or however many it is) grown men with nothing better to do than run around a field after a ball. However many million more with nothing better to do than watch them."

And out of interest what are your hobbies? you watch any sports? do you read any fictional novels (nothing better to do than read something which never actually happened), watch any movies (nothing better to do than watch millionaires pretend to be someone they're not), I mean you can be condescending and facetious about anyones past-times but why do people seem to revel so much in doing it about football? Is it simply because it is the most popular sport/past-time on the planet and people feel like hitting back against something so popular which they dislike? It's success seems to be the only difference to other sports and past-times which seem to avoid similar scorn. I mean nobody pisses and moans about net-ball, hockey or badminton in the same way and the only reason I can think of is that they don't share a similar level of success that football does.

The type of person who assualts their partner does not do it because of the football.

They do it because they are an abusive twat.

Take away the football and do you seriously think they would stop?

No. The drinking while watching footy may give them an excuse, but the football is in no way responsible and if you took it away, they'd simply find another excuse.

Because they want to abuse. It makes them feel powerful.

What we need to do is to get people out of abusive relationships by giving them more and more places to go. By making them understand that they don't deserve it!

Deal with the cause, not the symptom, imo.
