AIBU?

Is this doctor being unreasonable to expect me to do this?

I was admitted to the antenatal ward of the hospital yesterday with high blood pressure, three pluses of protein in my urine and tachycardia (my pulse was between 120 and 160 during the day). They also found out in the blood tests they did that i have an overactive thyroid.

Yesterday I was told i would be in until they had the results of the 24 hour urine collection and that I was supposed to be having my blood pressure done every 2 hours. I was started on medication and there was some query over the baby's heartrate being a bit flat on the trace. This morning all of a sudden they had run out of beds and sent me home to finish the 24 hour urine with the doctor telling me to come back and spend the day tomorrow then go home then come back spend the day on monday go home then come back tuesday for a consultant appointment. It is a taxi ride to the hospital which cost around £12 a time, I am feeling unwell with the side effects of the medication and generally unwell for unknown reasons.

So now i am lying in bed at home scared about the baby and the fact that even though it is my fourth baby as he kept pointing out I HAVE had preeclampsia 3 times so I am not sure how that is supposed to reassure me. With a giant taxi bill coming up for the indefinate future - I am only 30 weeks so potentially ALOT if he is going to insist on this for some time.

Is the hospital being unreasonable - I know they are busy but I feel like they are putting me and my baby at risk just to grab our bed?

Could you not tell them it is not possible for you to travel backwards and forwards.

I was kept in for what (i think) was a lot less (i only need to rest to keep contractions at bay apparently)

Hi Fernie,

Sorry youre having a crap time of it.

Could you call your M/W and get her to have a go at them? (I once had a fab one who took no sh1t fron drs. I always called on her to fight my battles )

If you feel rough,go back in and demand to be seen or maybe go to another hospital??

YANBU at all. Its a blardy farce that you have been sent home with those symptoms!

You could have refused to go home?

Keep an eye on movements from the baby.

Can you slightly exaggerate the symptoms to give them a kick up the bum?

I think this is ridiculous!!

I had pre-eclampsia too and was not allowed to go home (despite begging on numerous occasions!) as they kept telling me I was "not a well girl", even though I felt fine.

Could you not phone the hospital and explain that you are worried as really not feeling good to see if they will readmit you?

I have just checked on my discharge notes and it says they HAVE diagnosed me with preeclampsia. To be fair I think alot of the not well feeling is the side effects of the medication. I will try and sit it out tonight as I was told that basically if I wanted to stay in I would have to go to another hospital which is about a hours train ride away which isnt really possible at the moment. When I go in tomorrow morning I will try and get someone to explain to me whats going on. I should have made more of a fuss but I was there on my own and I am not very good at arguing in these situations.

Surely with PE you need almost complete bedrest? I don't know many taxis with beds

If I was you, I would go back to the hospital and tell them how ill you feel. I had PE and was kept in hospital for 3 weeks before dd1's birth - I really don't think you should be at home, worrying and feeling dreadful.
You deserve a hospital bed as much as any other patient.
Best of luck, take care x

YANBU! I had preeclempsia I can't remember what my BP was but the consultant checked it with 3 different Machines to be sure the first and second weren't broken! I also has the protein in urine plus 3 and was induced the next day! I was further along then what you are but still!!! I think you should demand they keep you in. They have diagnose preeclempsia so really u
you 1) should not be at home and 2) should not be expected to travel up and down to the hospital!
