DH doesn't actually want to tell me I've put on weight but he knows it and I know it

Well, better that he is honest with you than lets you go out looking less than your best.

My husband is the same. If I ask him if I look ok, and I don't - he'll tell me. And I prefer it that way. I know if he says yes, he means it. And I don't go out looking terrible.

So be happy that he values you enough to be honest with you that something doesn't look good, but is sensitive enough to your feelings to try to be subtle and pass a message in a kinder way.
