Can't stand it when people call my female dog this, she is a she and not an inaminate object.

YABU.

How are they to tell if your dog is male and femlae without close inspection?

"It's" only a dog after all.

If people know that your dog is a female then yanbu.

If you are talking about random people who don't know then yabu.

With you on that one DAS! I've had a few words with stroppy gits calling dogs "it", "the thing", "the beast" etc in my rescue work too.

My dog is a neutered male, but he is very 'cute'. People call him 'her' a lot which annoys me (unreasonably) but I prefer 'her' to 'it'. I know several 'girl dogs' with pretty collars.

Someone called my 6 month old baby 'it' the other day. Must say I was rather taken aback - I'd usually ask, 'boy or girl' at least.

Have you tried dressing your dog in a pink, knitted coat and a tiara? Might work.

stleger · 18/04/2010 22:00

I used to be annoyed at people 'mis-sexing' my babies, and a cautious with others.

Just for IwishIwasmoreorganised:

From time to time, people tell me, lighten up, it's just a dog or, that's a lot of money for just a dog
They don't understand the distance traveled,
the time spent, or the costs involved for just a dog.
Some of my proudest moments have come about with just a dog.
Many hours have passed and my only company was just a dog.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by just a dog and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of just a dog gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it's just a dog then you will probably understand phrases like just a friend, just a sunrise; or just a promise Just a dog brings into my life the very essence
of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.
Just a dog brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
Just a dog brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.
I hope that someday those people can understand that it's not just a dog but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being just a man.
So the next time you hear the phrase just a dog just smile, because they just don't understand

i call all dogs him or he.. even mine and shes female!

calling my dog 'it' wouldn't offend me though, my baby, yes! but not my dog

No - you're right.

I don't really understand. I've never had a dog, or a cat for that matter because I'm allergic to their hair.

I'm glad that people get so much pleasure from their pets, but to me it is "just a dog".

No offence intended.

YABU, purely for having such an uninformative title.

Vallhala - that actually brought tears to my eyes. I had to go and kiss my Just a Dog and ruffle his ears. He gave me a rather disdainful look and rolled over.

It annoys me when people call my dog 'she' when he is called Harry, and has a, erm... percy the size of my arm.

But yes, 'it' is much worse. Almost hurtful, in fact. And if anyone ever referred to my DD as 'it' I would give them a darn good telling off.

I never understood the attachment people hod to their dogs until I got my own. They are true, 100% members of my family, DH and I dote on them like they are our children, but obviously we train them like dogs. (We will prob revisit this statement when the first real child comes along in the Summer!)

well, i think yanbu, but i have a dog that is forever geeting called it or he, when she is definatley a she!

although to be fair, she is not the most feminine dog and she barks like an old man.

i can see why alot of people would think yabu though.

YABU by taking away my choice to ignore yet another dog thread by using that silly title!!

Might I respectfully suggest you find something else to worry about? Something that actually maters? I presume they aren't kicking your dog or teasing her or being unkind to her while they are calling her it?

AnyFucker · 18/04/2010 22:35

what seeker said

do you send birthday cards to your dog ?

My ds is 8 and refers to all dogs thus
"Its a dog, Its a DOG, arghhhhhhhh its a dog, quick quick lets get past it, arghhhhhh its a dog"

I refer to dogs thus
"Yes I know it is a dog, it is on a lead, it looks like a nice calm happy dog, we dont need to worry about it"

So both ds and I refer to almost all dogs as 'it'

YABU

Oh get a grip. If it bothers you that much then correct people when they say it. I'm sure most people just don't know whether it is male or female.
