AIBU?

chickenpox AIBU?

A friend wants to take her ds with still - infectious chickenpox into town. He is 5 and is obviously off school because of it. Her 3 y.o. dd has had a vomiting bug less than 24 hours ago too. She would be travelling by bus. There is no real need for her to go into town, she just wants to go out for breakfast. They have cancelled plans for later in the week with several people because the dc's are "too ill".

This is the same woman that ranted and raved because she'd seen a child with chickenpox in town a few months ago, and said how mad she'd be if her dc's got it.

AIBU to think that (a) if your child is off school to prevent a virus spreading that they would really be better off at home unless a trip out is really necessary, and (b) that it shows no consideration for others?

And C). she deserves a slap?

Complete and utter selfishness. Had someone with chickenpox taken the same bus as me when I was doing daily trips to the hospital for cancer treatment my 2 (then) young children could quite conceivably have become orphans.

Thank you vh! After I found out what she was intending to do earlier, I ranted on quite a bit to dh but like most people he didn't understand how dangerous it could be.

I was going to add something similar for (c). Isn't it risky to pregnant women, or am I mixing it up with something else?

I was at her taking her dd too.

I am fairly sure that she does know - but the lure of a cheap Ikea breakfast is too great. So for the sake of waiting a few days, someone could get seriously ill. Without wishing to sound cruel, I'm kind of hoping that her dd is slightly sick in the morning as it might put her off going out.

Thank you for backing me up here, I didn't think I was being stupid for ranting on.

Well he is infectious, but no more so then he was the day or 2 before the rash came out and he would have been going round merrily infecting all and sundry then so I think perhaps you are a bit OTT.You actually have to be either in the same room for an hour, or very very close to someone to catch it.

Point taken. I realise that you are infectious before the rash appears, I just think that to go out knowing you could put someone at risk isn't right.

What about her dd currently having a vomiting bug too though?

Brassband, I caught chickenpox about a year after my cancer surgery, about a week after visiting a family whose lad had it, unbeknown to me. I didn't even see the lad that day if I recall rightly. I may have caught it from someone else in a shop/while dogwalking and stopping to pet an owners pooch of course but antisocial moo that I am I didn't spend any time with anyone else other than that at all in the couple of weeks beforehand.

Very odd!

And PS, I was extremely ill with it, so much so that my mother came within a gnat's chuff of dragging me into hospital.

Shall I text her in the morning and very pointedly offer to get anything she needs from the shops because her ds "can't go out" at least until Thursday ?

I know that she doesn't need to go out for anything in particular, but would it make her have a rethink?

I feel bad, I think DS has pox and was thinking of popping to the shops but after reading this I won't... I guess I just assumed Chicken Pox was a non serious illness...

I didn't realize how serious chicken pox was until my son had it whilst I was pregnant GP came out to check I'd not caught it.

I just heard that she has decided not to go into town today.

It is raining quite heavily here though, so my guess is that it's more to do with her not wanting to get soaked than her seeing sense. I am still relieved that she isn't going though.
