I've just picked my dcs up from school.

Me 'Hi ds1, have you had a nice day?'

ds1 'No! I had my name put on the board for talking and now I have to miss the next two lessons of PE'

I've no problem with the school giving a punishment if the children missbehave but is it really appropriate to make them miss a lesson?

Isn't physical education important especially with the rising problem of childhood obesity? Just because it isn't English or Maths surely it is still an important part of their education and shouldn't be dismissed so lightly.

If he had been made to miss playtime or stay inside at lunch I wouldn't have a problem.

The school is required to provide a certain number of hours per week of PE (5 I think?) so he shouldn't be missing this.

I would have probably talked in lessons in order to get off PE!

Yes noblegiraffe thats what I thought too, not really a punishment for the kids who don't even like PE.

It's two hours of PE a week, and it's a statutory requirement. So they can't order her to miss PE as a punishment.

Primary school children (particularly boys) need physical exercise as much as they need mental exercise. We had one teacher who had no interest in PE and used any bad behaviour in class as an excuse to cancel it.

That?s a) not acceptable and b) self-defeating, as anyone who has had to try to control 30 young children (particularly boys) will know ? they?re much more likely to be focused on a task if they?ve burnt off some of that excess energy!

I?d be really wary of any teacher who thinks a PE ban is a suitable punishment. Definitely take it up with the school.

princessparty I will ask the school to clarify it before I jump in with two feet! He is 9 though so not that short and I've just checked with him again. He is quite clear about it. It's a new rule for both classes in year 5, if your name goes on the board you have to miss the next two lessons of PE.
