To take DD out of school for one day

She has just gone back today after the christmas holiday and I am planning to keep her off on Wednesday and take her to see some ugly troll scarers. We are leaving Switzerland in the summer and I really want to see them. Am I being U? She is 8.7 and doesn't have any important lessons on this day. She will miss swimming but that doesn't really matter.
It is the sort of thing she'll remember for the rest of her life (I hope) so, AIBU?

I don't know why I feel I need validation, I'd already more or less decided that we would. She struggles with boredom at school unfortunatley so my way of looking at it is that she may as well do something that could possibly hold her interest.

Something she will remember forever beats school any day. It is only one day.

It really annoys me when people say that taking a child out of school will make them fall behind unless of course, they are doing very important GCSE stuff which is not the case here or are doing it excessively.

At our school, not all days are filled with sums and reading. Sometimes they go on a trip to somewhere that is not particularly educational, rehearse school plays, charity football goal things, making calendars.

We are going to Disneyland in March and I will be taking DD out for 2 days. She will be 6.

A few days really don't hurt and a single day is a real treat. Have fun!

My friend has never forgotten the day his dad turned up at the train station when he was on his way to school, got him in the car and spent the day at toysrus/cinema/pizza hut for lunch.

He said he only did it once the whole time he was at school but it was the best day ever!

YANBU,I am Swiss and Had no idea what you were talking about before seing your link. I have never seen them in real life and feel that I have missed something important, just take her there!

(Maybe you hire one to scare the birds in your garden as well!)

Gorionine, we don't have a garden and the birds don't come to the balcony. I can't wait till fastnacht starts properly, I may go to Luzern and have an all nighter (you'll know what I am talking about)

I am the poster who doesn't like birds, I would go as far as to say I am phobic about them. My dh was asked to join the guggiband last year. I was so proud although a bit unsure of why they wanted him. I love fastnacht and, have taken dd out of school to see that too.

Update, I am a bit miffed at her school. I told the office staff yesterday that she wouldn't be in school tomorrow. One woman was fine, but the stupid other one insisted that I made a formal request to the head. I declined. I could have kept her off and phoned in sick but didn't. I despair sometimes.

I promise not to go on about all the important stuff she is missing (she won't miss anything) and I certainly wouldn't moan about teachers. DH is one himself.
I got us both a balaclava yesterday, the wind is absolutely piercing. She was running around this morning, totally naked saying she was a nudey ninja and this is how she's going tomorrow. I assured her she wasn't.

Well, we had a fabulous time and I've now got a cheese twitch. I ate so much Appenzel I think it has affected my neural pathways. It was a really great event, apart from the 4km route we had to follow in knee deep snow. DD thinks she is special because I imagine she's the only one from her school to have seen it. The highlight for her was teh incontinent dog sitting in a bag next to us on the train journey. The owner keep lifting it up and wiping his tiny winkle with a hankie [vom emoticon]. She told me this morning that she'll tell her class all about that.
Next unauthorised absence will be for fastnacht in Luzern
