Great Little Trading Company? Crap more like...

I've started a new thread just to see who has had bad experiences with this horror of a company? They owe me £145.00 from an original order of £249.00. They refunded half and I'm now being told the other half will come by cheque; er postal strike anyone?

The blunders have been coming thick and fast and their service is awful. I wonder if they're in trouble and that's why they are holding onto my money.I've made atleast 30 odd calls, almost all at my expense, spoken to just about everyone in the company, all of whom are very nice and basically unable to help due to protocol and rules.

Maybe I'm unlucky, but I wish I'd never clapped eyes on their sodding catalogue. Just to finish my rant, while you are left on hold waiting for soembody to pick up the phone, thay make you listen to Noddy, The Mister Men and Roobarb and Custard...Lovely.

Firawla Fri 09-Oct-09 19:41:42

never used them myself but have heard similar, i think there is a thread about them in the products area with all complaints

nigglewiggle Fri 09-Oct-09 19:49:10

I ordered some things before christmas last year with 20% off. It turned out that their website couldn't calculate 20% correctly and I was being over-charged. After several very confusing phone calls I decided that they thought everyone would be as bad at maths as they were and the whole thing was a con. I did eventually get the money back though.

I can't believe they apparently win awards! I hope you get your cheque soon.

Shamster Fri 09-Oct-09 19:51:47

I can't either! How do they win awards? I want to talk to the people and give them the real picture. It's such a shame as their stuff is lovely but service is everything...

llaregguBOO Fri 09-Oct-09 19:53:38

They took ages to send me one item then when they did they sent two, which annoyingly I then had to return.

MintyCane Fri 09-Oct-09 19:59:33

BTW you know those big world maps they sell - you can get them on Amazon for a fiver. Just thought it was worth a mention with xmas coming up. smile

Shamster Fri 09-Oct-09 19:59:44

Ahhh, well they've changed that policy now. They will pick up wrong orders and damaged deliverys, which is something. This farce has been going on for well over 4 weeks now. They delivered an item that was damaged and I refused to pay a courier up front to send it back to them.

TheCrackFox Fri 09-Oct-09 20:02:30

Thanks Minty DS1 would love a giant map. Off to look at Amazon now.

I ordered a play table from GLTC and it arrived on time. I thought their service was quite good.

MintyCane Fri 09-Oct-09 20:06:52

map I got one for dd and the solar system one - they are great.

Indith Fri 09-Oct-09 20:07:08

Well you know my rant Shamster, mostly sorted now but still waiting on the refund for the return I paid for!

babybarrister Fri 09-Oct-09 21:35:02

I had problems too and my MN 10% NEVER came through either ....

stuff is nice though ....

Padraigin Tue 08-Dec-09 08:54:17

I too am having a miserable experience with the Great Little Trading Company. Dreadful service. Half the order didn't arrive and took countless phone calls and e mails to get sorted. They told me they have a backlog of 400 e mails - hard to believe for an internet company! I ended up posting a lost in transit form because they admitted they probably wouldn't process it by e mail.
The part of the order that did arrive had the wrong components. Several million phone calls later they've agreed to give me a refund when the goods are returned. I have to guarantee to wait in all day from 9-5. This saga has been going on for over a month. I don't trust them.
This is the most expensive toy storage solution on the market and one would expect better service. Avoid this company like the plague. They outsource their customer services to a call centre and don't give a monkeys. The sales agents are polite but ineffectual. When I told them they are gettting negative publicity on the net their attitude was basically that it's only the few hundred(!) moaners who complain while the satisfied customers say nothing.
Don't be pulled in by the glossy brochure. Their guarantee of service is not worth the paper it's written on. They nearly went under a few years ago because of similar problems.

MrsMills Tue 08-Dec-09 08:59:22

Yes I had a problem with them last year.

I ordered something and paid for them to gift wrap it and have it sent direct to my friend for her daughters birthday.

They didn't giftwrap and sent the full invoice to her too!

A scant apology was all I received. Have not used them since, but I'm now having similar problems with The White Company.

fatsatsuma Tue 08-Dec-09 09:02:18

Another dissatisfied customer here.

I ordered dd's main Christmas present from them in mid-November. The item was in stock on the website, payment went through etc.

When it hadn't arrived a week later I phoned up to ask where it was. 'Oh, you should have got an email' they said, 'It's out of stock til 17th December'. Needless to say I had had no email.

I asked if they could guarantee that it would arrive in time for Christmas, as I had ordered it nice and early for that very reason. 'No' they said. 'When it's in stock we will send it to you.'

If I had known all that I would never have ordered it. The person on the phone wasn't the slightest bit apologetic, or very surprised that I had never had the email. Rubbish service.

undercoverelephant Tue 08-Dec-09 14:13:00

Bought one of their (not cheap) cabin beds with accompanying "furniture." Never again. Totally flimsy useless tat.

I am surprised to hear everybody's bad experiences, I have ordered a number of things from them and never had a problem, in fact they have always delivered very promptly, and have applied the correct discount is necessary, I suppose I have been very lucky

Runoutofideas Tue 08-Dec-09 14:22:51

I ordered some toys from them last Christmas and they all arrived with no problems. Have had no need to use their customer services, so therefore can't really comment on that side of things.

undercoverelephant Tue 08-Dec-09 14:24:40

Well just to clarify I never had a problem with their customer service, just the product. The bed we bought came with a chest, bookcase and desk, all of which were poorly finished and partly made out of that lightweight plywood stuff. The drawers on the chest won't stay shut and it's difficult to pull the desk out from under the bed without bashing it on the slats on the underside of the bed.
The catalogue makes it all look lovely and robust. Perhaps the toys and accessories are OK, but I wouldn't buy funiture from them again.

stealthsquiggle Tue 08-Dec-09 14:28:54

Personally I have come to view GLTC as a good catalogue/website to use for ideas, which you then source elsewhere more cheaply and with better customer service (there are a few others in the same category grin)

For furniture, I would recommend ASpace - slightly more expensive on the face of it but with frequent 20% off offers which bring it down to GLTC prices and the quality/service is far better - DS bed is good as new 4 years on, DD has a lovely chest of drawers, and a friend has 'seconds' bunk beds from them where you need a magnifying glass to spot the flaw which had made them seconds.

Cistus Tue 08-Dec-09 14:31:28

my experience with them is lovely catalogue, rubbish service. I would never use them again

Onlyaphase Tue 08-Dec-09 15:36:07

I've used them for a couple of years now, and so does my MIL - neither of us have ever had any problems with the service or the products themselves. Unlike last year when ordering from Urchin who then went into administration and kept MIL's money!

Having said that, we have mainly ordered toys from them and smaller things like beanbags etc. Can't comment on the furniture side of their offerings

GrimmaTheNome Tue 08-Dec-09 15:44:20

I used to use GLTC quite a lot when DD was younger, and MIL ordered things for her from it too. Don't remember any problems, but it was mostly smaller items, not furniture.

carocaro Tue 08-Dec-09 15:51:25

I've ordered twice, both late and both over charged. Not touching them again.

FiveGoMadInDorset Tue 08-Dec-09 15:58:50

Would second stealthsquiggles ressommendation of Aspace, have been very happy, they are in constant contact with you.

Spectroscopy Tue 08-Dec-09 16:22:12

I have had an expensive wooden toy arrive from them broken (well part was). Looked lovely in the catalogue but in reality is as cheaply made. Heavy, so much to much hassle to send back so we kept it.

The catalogue is lovely, but as other have mentioned a quick google often finds the same items cheaper elsewhere...

I don't bother with it anymore either.

Winterbaby Tue 08-Dec-09 17:19:54

I've been using them for years. I bought both dd's and ds's toddler beds and matching furniture from them as well as an assortment of other smaller items. I've never had any issues with them.

With dd's bed the item was delivered missing parts. I called them and within a few days they had picked up the item with the missing parts and delivered a new one. I thought their customer service was quite good.

Padraigin Wed 09-Dec-09 12:20:31

I am still having a huge problem with them about a return. It is impossible to speak to anyone in authority and they hide behind a call centre number. If there are any problems you get the runaround. Avoid this company like the plague. There are companies with much better service and ethos. I am now going to have to write to them in an attempt to get some redress.
The Lazzari stuff by the way is over priced and shoddy. Looks pretty in the catalogue but is basically just MDF. Very disappointing.

FrankCross Wed 09-Dec-09 12:23:17

I've had problems with them.

They sent out a ride on horse with a huge nail sticking out of the bottom(!), and the replacement has just started coming apart at the seams after a month.

Wouldn't use them again.

MrsMattie Wed 09-Dec-09 12:28:05

Ordered a sandpit from them. It took an age to come and when it did arrive it was broken. It took multiple calls and emails from me to get them to send out a few replacement slats. They refused to replace the whole sandpit, which I thought was a completepisstake. Horribly expensive, too. I'd never use them again.

BonjourIvressedeNoel Wed 09-Dec-09 12:47:41

I bought a towelling beach dress from them. Arrived smelling of smoke. Sent it back and they refunded me and sent another one. Wouldn't besrprised if they go out of business soon, they are so incompetent

MillyMollyMoo Wed 09-Dec-09 12:50:39

I ordered somethign with 20% off last year in October, it arrived on 23rd December - broken and they took the full price off my card.
Lost the will to fight with them by March

GooseyLoosey Wed 09-Dec-09 12:53:25

Bought one of those dolls house bookcases from them. The finish on it was rubbish - it had chips and blisters on the coloured surfaces. It was much more money that I would normally have paid but I thought it looked lovely. I have never bought anything from them since.

Avendesora Wed 09-Dec-09 16:52:03

Was the ride on horse a hobby horse? <worried emoticon>

neolara Wed 09-Dec-09 17:13:33

I've bought quite a lot from them over the years and goods have always arrived intact and promptly. But from what others have said, it sounds like their system for when things go wrong does not work.

RJRabbit Wed 09-Dec-09 17:16:25

I'm still waiting for my advent calendar to arrive!

FrankCross Wed 09-Dec-09 17:16:41

Yes it was/is the hobby horse in their current calendar.

Not sure what to do about it actually... was a 3rd birthday present for dd and she'll be gutted if he has to go back again

I like Aspace too.

I had trouble with GLTC a couple of years ago, received damaged goods, had to return at my own expense and didn't have this refunded. My letter of complaint was ignored.

I still (reluctantly) used them since, with few problems. Have used for things like Lazarri and playtables and always used next day, express delivery.

I hope you get your refund soon.

mrsvwoolf Wed 09-Dec-09 17:48:22

Lazzari blush

spicemonster Wed 09-Dec-09 17:59:23

My sister bought a toy chest for my DS from there and had it delivered to my house. It was a nightmare to put together (and I am am expert flat pack furniture assembler) and the lid mechanism didn't work. So I had to take it to bits and package it up. And they sent a replacement and I had the same issue with that too. And it was a right pain because they wouldn't collect either of them from me as they had been delivered to my sister's house so I had to cart them back across London.

Would never ever buy anything from them again.

alibubbles Wed 09-Dec-09 18:57:53

I got some gift vouchers from therm for crap service, and guess what, when I tried to use them they say they don't do gift vouchers anymore, and wouldn't accept them, and that I must be mistaken, excuse me, but they say GLTC --are rubbish--on them

alibubbles Wed 09-Dec-09 18:59:40

OOps, it won't strike out for me!

Padraigin Mon 14-Dec-09 18:35:58

my nightmare with GLTC continues. My husband and I both arranged to be at home for collection today as they told us the could only specify 9-5. Needless to say no one has turned up from their equally wretched courier company XDP. I've been told someone will come tomorrow afternoon.
The appalling service and contempt for the customer of these companies knows no bounds. I cannot emphasise how dreadful they are.

blowninonabreeze Mon 12-Apr-10 23:46:40

I'm bumping this up as am having a nightmare with GLTC and wanted others to be aware.

Have rated them highly in the past but currently my frustration knows no limits.

TKB Fri 28-Dec-12 11:26:24

Yes, they're still awful. I ordered a stable and horses set on the 17th December, i've just contacted them on 28th December and I've been told they'll be available and sent to me on the 29th March! Presumably, if I hadn't phoned I'd be waiting until then with no contact from them. Really not good enough when you're dealing with children's expectations. Stay clear, there is enough decent competition to be treated with more courtesy.

givemeaclue Fri 28-Dec-12 11:27:28

Had terrible service, shoddy products and I don't use them anymore

Theicingontop Fri 28-Dec-12 11:38:12

After reading this I'm glad the pricey item I was going to order from them ran out of stock before Christmas. Blimey.

Icelollycraving Fri 28-Dec-12 13:48:51

Reading this is quite surprising. I had been looking at their storage but will reconsider now.

monkeysmama Fri 25-Jan-13 21:05:08

I am resurrecting this from a few weeks back because I am having a mare with them at the moment. I wondered how those of you who had issues got them resolved?

I've had lots of good experiences buying small stuff from them. I ordered a bed and mattress in their Christmas sale and it has turned into a farce. Customer Services can't seem to get my name right and keep saying "it should've been dispatched two weeks ago. Hope that settles any confusion" Um, no, not at all. Then at the end they say "have a good day". A day which has been spent emailed them and fuming at their incompetence.

Rant over.

microserf Sat 26-Jan-13 00:02:58

A company best avoided. We ordered the ruler height chart and it came stained with marks we couldn't remove. Never again, the catalogues go straight in the bin now.

cocoachannel Sat 26-Jan-13 00:20:16

Awful. Two products from them: a child's armchair which arrived with a small tear in the fabric which apparently must have been how we removed it from the packaging; and, a toy box which was £££ and flimsy/ next to impossible to build but could be returned as we had put the hinges on it.

NEVER again. Avoid.

cocoachannel Sat 26-Jan-13 00:25:57

Oh, and aren't they a Mumsnet partner? Hope MNHQ have seen this thread...

I had a damaged storage unit from them- they couldn't care less.

hmm the advert at the bottom of my page says they are best children's retailer 2012. We must all be wrong.

TepidCoffee Sat 26-Jan-13 00:32:48

We've found them fine.

sashh Sat 26-Jan-13 04:50:35

I bought 1 thing, once for my niece.

She is now 20 and they won't stop sending emails and mailshots.

Stereolab Sat 26-Jan-13 09:18:51

Think we must have purchased the same toy box as Cocoachannel. A complete nightmare to construct with an excessive number of screws and nails (and really disappointing when completed). Thought about it just the other day (with a shudder). I never bought from them again.

zlist Sat 26-Jan-13 10:20:42

I've bought quite a few things from them over the years (no big ticket items though) and have never had an issue but I've never had to return or construct anything from them. I now only use them if they are selling something I want that I simply can't get anywhere else as they do seem expensive. Threads like this have definitely put me off even considering them for things like furniture etc.

Er this thread is nearly years old.... Zombie

That should say 4 years old

Yes, zombie thread indeed notsofrownieface and they're still shit! It's good sometimes to get a bit of perspective on how long they have failed at customer service!

monkeysmama Sat 26-Jan-13 16:34:03

Sort of zombie thread but it was resurrected before Christmas which is why I commented two weeks later. And yes, they are still crap.
