To not want to use socket covers?

I quite often see plug socket covers listed as the most important things for child safety, but I don't see the point myself. I remember taking them out of the sockets when I was a child and playing with them. And also my DP's friend who is an electrician said they are unnecessary, because UK sockets have safety shutters built into them anyway so you can't insert anything into the live or neutral plug point, unless there is an Earth pin inserted. That is why some things have a plastic Earth pin - and makes sense to me as I once stepped on a phone charger and snapped off the plastic Earth pin, and the plug wouldn't go into a socket after that.

I googled it the other day and found this website: www.fatallyflawed.org.uk/ which seems to suggest that in fact it is dangerous to use socket covers! I don't know if I'd go that far (the claim that children might put it back in upside down is a bit far fetched I think) but they do seem unnecessary.

We had them until the electrician came round. He was quite adamant that they are both not needed but also potentially dangerous, as they can damage the built in safety mechanism. Have removed all of them now so no YANBU.

My son is 2 and a half and I have only just bought some socket covers as he has started playing with them. Better safe than sorry - they don't cost a lot afterall.

I suppose I am a bit concerned that if they are so dangerous, why are they being sold? To make money?

I did not know that. I've got them in all my sockets, even the ones behind the cabinet that ds's won't ever get near. Unless 2 under 2's manage to move it

They're rubbish.
My ds never looked at plug sockets until I bought some. The covers made sockets look like toys, he thought it was a novelty shape sorter. It took about 10 minutes for him to work out how to get them out.
