We were having a daft phone conversation and she was making a silly statement that I should lie about something to DD (aged 7). I said I never lie to my children and she said not even when she says 'Whats that thing between daddy's legs?'

I just snorted and said DD is very aware of body parts and their medical names and uses. I mentioned that she knows a penis, vulva, vagina and ovaries along with heart, lungs and veins etc.

Cousin then said 'oh you're weird, you're going to make her grow up into a lesbian' WTF!!

At that point I said I had to go and removed myself from the conversation.

What a ridiculously small minded and pathetic view point, yes???????

Eh? What an extremely strange thing to say. Why would anyone think that knowing the names of body parts would have any effect on someone's sexuality?

SparkyFartDust · 21/02/2009 16:41

yep, sounds like a penis (note my use of correct terminology!)

I think she was outraged that DD knew of a vulva......she should come on MN. I know not everyone agrees with kids knowing 'stuff', but I've had one baby and am pg with another and these questions do come up. I answer them honestly and suitably. God knows what she would do- tell her DD the stork comes probably.

Cousin uncomfortable with her own anatomy. Suggest she reads "The Female Eunoch"

Your cousin sounds a bit thick.

You are definitely not being unreasonable!

what's wrong with being a lesbian anyway? - cousin is clearly an idiot!

diedandgonetodevon · 21/02/2009 17:06

YANBU- better than giving it some silly name or lying about what a penis is!

Children should know what parts of the body are.

Report
suwoo · 21/02/2009 17:10

Yeah, exactly beanie, so what if she is a lesbian and so what if she knows what an area of her own physical anatomy is called!

Yeah, think cousin is a bit thick small town minded.

I don't understand her reasoning. Seriously baffled. If your child knows the correct terms for body parts, this will affect their sexuality as adults.

I don't get it.

Sounds like your dd is older than your cousin?? No??

Report
suwoo · 21/02/2009 17:17

Nope, I don't get it either. Cousin is 32

So what lie were you supposed to tell about what daddy has between his legs???

Better a lesbian than daft, anyway.

I didn't mean 'affect' I meant determine.

'affect', reading it back, sounds wrong, and a bit negative.

She sounds very immature and rather dim.

Will I get a unanimous YANBU I wonder? Or will some weirdo one be along in a minute?

DH replied "No, he's my son"

YANBU!

What are you supposed to say Daddy has between his legs?

Report
pointydog · 21/02/2009 19:05

erm, I'd take your cousin's rep[ly as some sort of silly jokey comment.

I'd shrug it off. Wouldn't make me cross or necessarily think he was a nob.

Has your cousin got children of her own? I ask because most of my friends who have no children are very ignorant about parenting (even those who are primary teachers!0
