Or you could ask for an employment tribunal to be paid the same? Are you absolutely sure your jobs are the same? Same qualifications etc?

If so, you have a good case I think but doubtless you need advice from a union or HR person...

Surely that's against the law?!

As WilfSell says, are you sure its exactly the same - if not, get legal on their asses!

If your experience and job are the same:

I thought if public sector you'd be able to appeal in some way but if private sector it's just because one person was better at asking for money than another?

Am public sector myself where everybody has a right to know what everybody else earns, and all work of equal value supposed to be equally rewarded with £. I thought in private sector you go to your boss and said 'I want £x pay rise this year' and if you ask for less than a colleague, you get less...?

Do you know, I'd never thought of the sex discrimination angle. I'm paid almost half of what the bloke was who did the job before me. They'll probably get away with it in my case though, as I was employed as an assistant to him - but he was seconded (which turned permanent) two weeks into the job and I've been doing it all since!

Dh has just pointed out are you on pay spines with annual progession or something similar, as you can miss out if on maternity leave..... ( apparently a grey area )

Just a thought after the initial outrage!!

Do you have the same length of service? Do you have the same experience?

How do you know how much he earns? Are you sure the information is correct?
I tend to agree with bosch - maybe that person has simply negotiated harder during salary reviews...

It is sex discrimination if you are doing the same job OR a job of equal value and are not being paid the same amount. More advice here The pay gap is still around 27% iirc.

Tribunals are expensive and hard work however. If you're ina union they may support you or check your home insurance, it's sometimes covered under that.

I mentioned in passing to my manager that I found it a bit depressing that the 3 women in the company I worked for earned less than the 4 men doing the same job. A few months later, at salary review time, I had an unheard of 15% payrise.

Where I work, everybody earns different amounts for the same of very similar jobs. Some influencing factors are when you started (they may have been offering higher salaries a few years before you started for example) and how hard you've pushed for pay rises. Where I work there is no set starting salary, they just pay you what they can get away with (often based on what you were earning in your previous job IYSWIM).
It's not necessarily discrimination - some of the women I work with earn more/less than me.
