i have been charged £100this month for going over my over draft. i have gone into the bank to see if they can do anything and i was told my a spotty YTS that it is tough shit. i tild them that i thought that it was wrong that they let you go over you agreed overdraft limit at the cash point only to charge you and that it was just another way to make money, i was told that as a VALUED cusotomer they let me go over my over draft just in case i am stuck with out cash. ie if i broke down inthe middle of the night and didnt have any money an need to get some. WHAT A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS.

They are currently charging me over £100 per month (overdraft stands at £1100 with around £700 of that just from their bank charges). I have spoken to them on the phone on several occasions and have talked to their advisor in the branch and they said they can't do anything to help me.

I am not working at the moment (DS2 is only 4mths old) and DH went through a rough patch with work earlier in the year so there has been no money going into my account. So I am basically left with these charges racking up until DS is bigger and I choose to go back to work (bastards).

Of course, when I say 'go back to work', I actually mean 'find someone who will actually employ me'

If it's practicable change your bank account. Banks won't change unless we vote with our feet.

speak to a manager and say that you cannot afford these payments and would like to see what can be done about it

ask for a freeze of interest charges

see the CAB first

Same's happened to me at hsbc recently-I'm changing bank in new year-got the joy of sorting all the direct debits out.
They've always tried to offer us expensive loans if we had a bad month-after charging us.
I know how bloody annnoying it is.

I'm not sure another bank would want my custom as my account stands at the moment

Yes, they are always very keen to offer us loans to pay off our bank charges

The most annoying thing is they have bounced a £15 standing order payment which is for a HSBC credit card and charged me £75! They continue to let all my other DD's go out though.....

I'm leaving HSBC and moving to the Co-op. Both for ethical reasons, and also just so that I don't give HSBC my custom any more.

When I had money probs, HSBC were the only creditor that wouldn't freeze my interest. Twunts - I'll never back with them again.

This is very interesting! I have been with HSBC since I started working at 17 and hadn't really ever considered changing banks until now. I feel really let down by them.

I bank with the co-op, and I've never been charged [verysmugsmile]

I wouldn't touch HSBC with a bargepole, they tried to ruin our business with their crappy behaviour antics, then they wondered why we moved everything to the Co-op.

HSBC charged us. Three months worth at £100 for going over our arranged overdraft. Then, once we were back in the black, they increased our overdraft limit (without consultation) to an amount that would have covered the problem. Complete twunts.

It might be worth writing a letter to the manager explaining the situ and asking for the charges to be waived? Barclays waived charges one summer when I was a student when my lovely summer employer suddenly decided to pay me at the end of my contract instead of weekly as agreed and as had been the case for the past 9 weeks . Got no joy from the boss so I appealed to the bank. I had my charges refunded (on that one, glorious, occasion).

There you go Pud, you have your answer - YANBU; HSBC ARE a bunch of tossers!

I hate them. They sold us a hugely expensive new-for-old-replacement insurance policy, and when we got burgled, paid us 50 quid for a laptop computer. New replacement, my arse.

Then about two years later I dropped an opal ring on the bathroom floor, the opal smashed, I had a jeweller photograph all the bits and quote for a replacement, and again they said they'd give me some ridiculously piddly amount - I think it was about 10 quid to replace a large solid opal.

Don't deal with your branch - go to their PR person and start screaming about bad publicity and threaten to go to the financial ombudsman.

Once we said "ombudsman" we had a cheque for the full amount within a week.

They have also "lost" many, many telegraphic transfer instructions, meaning that some poor wee university students in Singapore and Korea that my husband employs to do media searches for him have been left skint - now he pays them by Paypal. Far more reliable.

Now we've moved overseas but I still have my original HSBC credit card, I have seriously considered running up a huge debt on it and defaulting.
