To refuse to walk DS home from CM in the freezing cold?

My day today to do the drop off and pick up f
from CM, but my car is temporarily out of action. DS is 10 months old and has recurrent chest infections. DH wanted me to walk home from the CM at 1800 with DS in the buggy - it's a good 15 minute walk and given it was -3c at 8am this morning likely to be a similar temp this evening. I refused and said we should switch days so DH does the pick up in his car. DH is no more busy than ususal today AFAIK. Now I'm the bad guy!

Will your car be ready tomorrow? If not, DH will have to do tomorrow too, won't he?

Wrap DS up really well and he'll be fine. Fresh air will probably help his chest infections better than the false hot air in car of home. DDs often clear up after she's spent some time in the "fresh" air.

I'm afraid I don't see the problem, I cycle home with my DD in the bike seat even in winter. Children are less fussy than we are about the cold and hardier than we think. IMO too much central heating does more harm than a blast of fresh air.

If he's well enough to go to the childminder, he's well enough to be walked home for 15 minutes. if he's well wrapped up and in the buggy, there's no problem. I do this all the time.

Just wanted to add, and apologise if my post came across as a bit abrupt, that I hate arguements and point scoring over child care issues. Joint parents, joint responsibilty.

A 15 minute walk should not be the cause of an arguement, even if it is cold!

I don't drive and have no other option but to walk.

This morning my dd (9) was wrapped up and my ds had a hat, gloves and blanket round him in his buggy. Both were fine.

Sorry I am going to be abrupt now but having no car is not the end of the world.

When I see the choking fumes from school buses, cars etc outside my dd's school it makes me scream. Much, much, much more healthy to walk.

Agree totally Fimbo. And children get sick from viruses and bacteria that flourish at warm temperatures in enclosed spaces, not from a few minutes out in the cold. FFS, we'd have died out as a race if a few minutes of fresh air and lack of car were so toxic.

Agree, I have been feeling lousy all week (ok so am not 10 months old) but feel tons better outside in the cold than in the car with the heating on.

And at the risk of sounding ancient, we never had a car when I was young and it-never-did-me-any-harm.

if it was pouring down rain I'd be inclined to agree with you (it's a 25 minute walk to my CM's) as I can't stand getting wet! (yep nothing to do with my dd- just me ). I've got a bit annoyed in the past with dh when it was a really wet day and he wouldn't/couldn't drive us for some reason (this was before I learnt to drive myself)
cold on the other hand I don't mind and as everyone else has said as long as your ds is well wrapped up, he hould be fine too. was slightly concerned at dd's refusal to wear gloves this morning mind you...

This is not the arctic, and even in the arctic where I am from, parents walk to and from nursery and school in snow and temperatures reaching -20, and think nothing of doing 30 minutes each way. Stop molly coddling, and stop bringing health issues into it for own convenience. His chest will benefit more from fresh cold winter air than you think.

That probably came across wrong! Normally I walk everywhere but not on a freezing winters night with a baby when it's getting close to bedtime. My biggest worry was what the childminder would think of me dragging DS out into the cold - so if she is with the majority of MMetters that's not a problem and AIBU - thanks!

i only hate not having a car when its raining, dd loves it tho as she can splash in puddles, ds is fine under the rain cover, its just me that gets soaked and miserable!

I only passed my driving test this year and my two have been out in all weathers in the buggy otherwise we would have been stuck in the house

I dont drive, so have always done CM journeys by bus/walking. I love the warm feeling when I get back in the house, and can take off the layers
