Why is it bullshit?

JennyOnAPlate · 24/01/2017 10:05

Not bullshit at all. It's cheered me up no end this morning.

EveOnline2016 · 24/01/2017 10:06

Because the people have voted and the people wants to leave the EU.

I can see parliament voting against Brexit, so there would have been no point in a vote in the first place.

Ensuring our democratically elected MP's have a vote on Brexit is bullshit?

Nope, it's not. Sorry. There is no way it won't go through, but that is beside the point.

SooWrites · 24/01/2017 10:06

I can see the MP voting to stay in.

One can hope.

I don't believe they will. There'd be too much backlash from the Turkeys Brexiters.

We are, unfortunately, going to have to live with this mess Sad

TabithaBethia · 24/01/2017 10:06

I hope they do vote to stay in (unlikely).

Iamtheresurrection · 24/01/2017 10:07

I think this is the start of the downfall of democracy. (and I voted Remain)

MaudGonneMad · 24/01/2017 10:07

Parliament is sovereign in the UK system. This decision upholds that, thankfully.

TheyCallMeBell · 24/01/2017 10:08

It's democracy in action. You can't demand the 'will of the people' is acted upon without due democratic process.

Sovereignty of the UK parliament is what Brexit was all about, was it not? This is exactly what was voted for.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2017 10:08

It's not bullshit, its not a decision that has been created to thwart article 50, merely to ensure that it enacted legally. That is the sole remit of the supreme court.

MadHattersWineParty · 24/01/2017 10:09

Well, I didn't vote to lose my rights as a European citizen actually. Why should the turkeys Leavers dictate that I should?

Unfortunately I think we will leave though Sad

"I think this is the start of the downfall of democracy. (and I voted Remain)"

It's the exact opposite of that.

MadHattersWineParty · 24/01/2017 10:10

No, it's not the 'downfall of democracy'. It is democracy.

EveOnline2016 · 24/01/2017 10:10

Also AM don't get a vote, so it's only going to be those in England.

The majority of the remaining group was English and PM are not going to go against what their constituents wants.

We are a parliamentary democracy, of course they should have a bloody vote. Or we get rid of the lot of them and we just have a referendum for all decisions or a benign dictatorship instead.

We elect our MPs to make decisions on our behalf. Some of them are good at it, some really crap at it. But they listen to their constituents.

edwinbear · 24/01/2017 10:10

It's been well reported that MP's will suppport Brexit in the vote otherwise they will be accused of refusing to accept what the electorate voted for. All this serves to do is delay the inevitable, increase uncertainty and make it harder for businesses to forward plan.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 24/01/2017 10:11

OO, what exactly will be achieved by remoaners if they get their way?

Meanwhile the EU has issued a directive on how brown a roast potato is allowed to be.

MaudGonneMad · 24/01/2017 10:11

Er, Scotland Wales and NI send MPs to Westminster.

You don't have a clue what you're ranting about, do you? Grin

LucyCallaghan · 24/01/2017 10:11

You clearly have no understanding of the process. Go and do some reading.

steppinstone · 24/01/2017 10:11

This is just telling us the process we need to lawfully Brexit. No more.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is a bit confused.

It upholds democracy. It ensures that the terms under which we leave are not dictated by a single person (or a group holding secret discussions). May was trying to take power that was not hers to have.

booox · 24/01/2017 10:12

It wasn't a vote.

It was a referendum .

And they'd actually established that they'd have to get parliament to vote on it before the referendum had even begun.

Not sure why it's taken this long actually.

SooWrites · 24/01/2017 10:14

The majority of the remaining group was English

I have a terrible memory but I am fairly certain that Scotland voted overwhelmingly to stay. NI also had more Remain votes. Outside of little England, there's only Wales the very definition of turkeys voting for christmas where the majority wanted out.
